Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo Really Want To Evolve The Zelda Series And Take It Further Than Before For Wii U

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has told GameInformer that he personally wants to drive The Legend of Zelda series forward. Initially Aonuma was happy making small, individual changes to the series but he now feels it’s time to seriously evolve the franchise.

“I started working on the series not at the beginning but part-way through its history. I think because of that, early on I was more looking objectively at the series and how we could change small, individual elements within it, rather than looking at how the series should evolve. As time has passed – particularly in the last few years – I’ve started to think a lot more about how I can take the series and really make it my own Zelda and evolve it further. As Mr. Miyamoto has allowed me to take the reins on the Zelda series, ultimately that’s what I need to do. Perhaps some people will think it’s a little bit late for me to start thinking about that, but as time goes by, that’s becoming more of a theme in how I’m approaching the series.”

    1. You had the opportunity to set an example, and you’ve forsaken it to say “first’

Learn to resist petty temptation and embrace honor!

…..I’ve been playing too much Skyrim; in other words, don’t say “first”, post something meaningful.

    1. Why on earth would it become Final Fantasy..? I doubt they’d opt out for a turn based battle system, not to mention an RPG level-up system.

        1. So true. Any fan of Final Fantasy who has been with it since the beginning knows that any FF after IX isn’t any good. Let’s face it, X had a nice battle system, but it’s story was crap. And any FF after X is complete trash.

I really don’t want Zelda to end up like FF in this aspect.

    1. Have you beaten Skyward Sword ??

      SPOILERS!

After the credits, Zelda says she wants to live beneath the cloud, on the surface and Link too. And Link, when Zelda gets blown away by tornado, Link didn’t even think before he tried to follow after but got knocked away. He went to end of the world for Zelda as Robin Williams said.

  1. i once heard that nintendo wanted to make a futuristic zelda. there was much negative backlash from the fans and they ultimately dropped it. i wonder if it will resurface with this idea of “evolving zelda”.

  2. He’s definitely got me curious as to the changes he wants to make.

Perhaps it’ll be something like Majora’s Mask? Zelda in the title, but REALLY different gameplay?

  3. Avid Zelda player…my only comment is to finally see the game evolve to a more mature audience and start stepping up on difficulty game play and story

  4. Ohhh nooooo!!!!!! Zelda on the WiiU???? AFTER SS’s awesome motion contols?? Oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no!!!!! NNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!! NOPE DON’T DO IT!! you CAN’T do that! Fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkkkkk nnnnnnnnoooooooooooooo! They did too well on that and it was way too much fun to only do once!

    1. Uh you do realize you can still use all of your remotes from your Wii on the Wii U? So they don’t even need to use the tablet controller, although it would be cool, but that means there is still the option for motion controls. :D

    2. You should know that Wii U is wii controller compatable.

Also the HUD could be removed if they stick a screen on the wii controller; you seen the Wii with the screen patent?

  5. hmm, to remember the changes that went through in majoras.. so many side-quests with the masks, If they take that path again, it would really be interesting, and maybe if they include options for you, not only to go straight to save the world, but also if you could do other stuff, like join the army of the city [wanted to do it in twilight], and have some quests “kingdom under fire” like, with the army and that kind of stuff, I think it would be cool…

  6. I swear, the Wii-U will be the strongest Console ever, it has SO much potential and I’m sure a Zelda game will change a lot!

  7. That’s one reason why I don’t care to play SS: it’s pretty much the same formula as past Zelda games, with a few changes made here and there. Excited to see how the series is ‘evolved’ as he puts it.

      1. I’m not a Zelda fan in the sense that I love every single Zelda game… the only Zelda game I’m a fan of is OoT, coincidentally, and I feel the series hasn’t really changed since then, as far as gameplay at least… which isn’t a bad thing, but now seems like the right time to mix things up and give the series a new direction.

  8. I was really looking forward to how Skyward Sword would be a departure from the traditional Zelda series. That’s what all the interviews, blogs, magazines, and articles read. But playing it, I only found minor tweaks here and there. Sure it was different from other games but not the extent I thought it would be because of the hype around the changes. Don’t get me wrong, it is still one of the best games on the wii but I hope when he says “evolution” he means it and we get something new.

  9. That’s actually a refreshing thought. I love Zelda the way it is now, but I seriously think Nintendo needs to think about going out of their comfort zone. They need to be bold and try something new. These new changes could range from something like voice acting to a completely different yet satisfying combat system or other new game mechanics. It’s about time, don’t you think?

  10. I’m really looking forward to it. If anyone can do it, take a perfect game series (Zelda, Mario), and revolutionize it, it’s Nintendo.
