Nintendo 3DS Sells More In Its First Nine Months Than The Wii Did

Nintendo of America has announced via a press release that the Nintendo 3DS has sold more units in its first nine months that the Wii did. Nintendo of America also revealed that the system has finally crossed the four million sold mark which I reported on a few weeks back for Japan. Nintendo are obviously ecstatic that they’ve achieved the figure, and rightly so.

“One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party lineup in the first part of the year and the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising.”

      1. wtf is going on? whare is the websites owner that sichr! u deserve a ban u dirty people because ur anoying us with ur nouncess (including the rest of this fucking website)

      2. Go to school. Learn how to spell properly. And oh, why don’t you ACTUALLY play some games: you obviously have no clue as to what you’re talking about. Crack kills.

      3. 1. You don’t have to write in caps.
        2. If Nintendo didn’t make it’s games, then the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch wouldn’t be here.
        3. Why are you here if you hate Nintendo?
        4. Get the f*ck off.

    1. That Is interesting, makes you wonder. I myself was wondering how it’s possible that it sold more than the wii, we had to wait overnight in the Canadian winter in a lineup at Zellers (Target) to get a Wii that first year.
The Wii is cosidered a smash success, and the 3DS a failure by many, Nintendo you need to limit supplies of the 3DS to be successful apparently. Perception>numbers.

  1. As Brygreen87 mentioned, that’s all simply because Wii were impossible to find. Nintendo simply has more 3DS units laying around, along with various models out compared to the Wii during its launch. Hell, we didn’t start seeing steady numbers of Wii units until the year after its launch.

    1. I think having a variety of different 3DS casings is helping the sales. It brings more attention to it this way people won’t be bored of just three colors.

  2. this would be great if the 3Ds wasnt sold at a loss, yes its selling more than wii as of right now, but the Wii was Pure Profit. im happy for nintendo, but how much of a loss have they taken for this?

    1. they’ll be making money off it’s games. Think of how much profit they made on their franchise games released for the system. I’m sure more than enough to cover the loss and get a few bucks back.

          1. Maybe you, i only have mario land, zelda, pilot wings, and pacman (im planing on getting matio kart soon) but, the tittles are too few if you ask me, specially since its first year is coming. this year should make up for alot though, specially since tales of the abbys is almost here.

        1. There may not be much for the 3DS right now, but the good games that are there are flying off the shelves so I feel like they’re doing a good job of bridging the gap

  4. 3DS aren’t exactly hars to come by. Wii’s were hard to come by for the first two years they were out, so tjos is Nintendo skewing their figures to raise their investor interests

  5. Selling it at a loss isn’t that much of a thing to be proud of. Without the price drop it wouldn’t have been that good. I mean, they dropped the price in less than 6 months after the release. Again, nothing to be proud of.

    1. Most consoles are sold at a loss initially; the big profit comes from games until. Think about it, you can only really sell one console to each person, but anywhere from 5 to 100 games (depending on the type of player) to that same person.

      1. If so, then Nintendo would have been selling the 3DS at a loss from the beginning, back then when it was 250€. So if that what you’re saying is true, then they’re selling it at a even bigger loss than they already were, which would make the situation I described before even worse.

  8. Wow, that’s pretty great and surprising. Especially since people lined up for the Wii and I just waltzed in for my 3DS.

Though I suppose the date of release has something to do with it, with the Wii releasing right before Christmas and also having a stronger initial line-up.

It’s good to see Nintendo really pulling themselves back up after the 3DS launch fiasco.
