SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan has told MCV that the company has been watching Nintendo 3DS sales closely and are encouraged by the systems performance in recent times, though he refuses to acknowledge that the 3DS poses a danger to Vita. Sony’s PlayStation Vita is currently struggling to win over Japanese consumers.
“One of the encouraging things about 3DS’ sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device,” he told MCV in an exclusive interview.
“And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.
But doesn’t the appetite for 3DS pose a danger to Vita? Apparently not.
“There are two distinct markets,” Ryan added.
“The quality, the immersiveness, the richness of the experience that we believe we are going to offer on Vita, way exceeds anything that we believe to be available on any smartphone.”

I can safely say that i would only buy vita if a bioshock was made for it and i had the game in my hand before the system was even on the counter. The reason it’s failing atm is because the games don’t appeal to the Japanese market. The “awesome” games are all aimed at the West such as Uncharted. I think things will change once we have it over here but if not then I’ll eat my words :)

I feel that with the rise of smart phones and what not that the 3DS & Vita are on the same sides if anything. Both appeal to gamers but both have games for different audiences. The Vita is just going through what the 3DS had to in its first 6 months or so. We need both consoles to succeed if we want gaming to evolve in the best possible way.
What is a hardcore gamer? You are implying that uncharted and halo is for the hardcore and Mario and Zelda are not? I enjoy Sony exclusives and nintendos exclusives and alot of 3rd party games does that make me a hardcore gamer or some kind of hybrid of both? I don’t mind them targeting smartphone gamers. I think Vita actually does have a better chance of going after smartphone users. People with a smartphone are less likely to give up their “all-in-one” for a DS. They may, however move to Vita.

The Vita’s real target isn’t the 3DS, it’s the smartphone audience. Sony acknowledges that no matter what, there will always be a dedicated audience separate from the Vita/smartphone audience who will constantly play the 3DS, that’s why they don’t acknowledge the 3DS as a threat, because they can’t touch the 3DS. So they’ll go after the one audience they can go after, and that’s the smartphone audience. You can see that the Vita is already built in such a way that it resembles and even works more like a modified smartphone than a handheld like the 3DS. So in a sense, the Vita’s mission may be more noble than we think: it aims to take back portable gaming from smartphones into the hands of dedicated handhelds again, while the 3DS…just dances to its own beat.
And if that’s so then the “noble mission” the Vita has is failing horribly.

Comparing it with the launch the Vita had it did extremely well.
Sony is going to have to wake up and realize this isn’t PS2 and Gamecube anymore, they can’t keep with the same attitude they had then. That being said, I sorta agree on the “two markets” thing, But whether or not thats true doesn’t matter. What matters is that people will not want a vita when they have iphone/droid for that, and a DS/3DS for a dedicated system. So vita doesn’t fit in that plan. Sony has to make it worth it to buy another expensive piece of hardware. Offer something the other two can’t, and not just better graphics. Competition always makes the game companies do cooler things, so any nintendo fan would WANT the vita to succeed :)

I don’t think people understand how serious Nintendo is when they say that they aren’t just competing with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is a video game company, and by default an entertainment company, so they see everything as competition. As Reggie himself says many times, Nintendo realizes that people have busy lives, and they only allow themselves a short amount of time for entertainment, be it movies, music, video games, browsing the internet, etc. So, to put it in other words, Nintendo is competing with every entertainment device, not just the PSP or PS3 or Vita or Xbox 360. People that say “real Nintendo fans would want the Vita to succeed because competition is healthy” are missing the point entirely. Vita isn’t the only entertainment device to compete with the 3DS. It’s what drives Nintendo to innovate, evolve, and make compelling entertainment experiences that can’t be found elsewhere, as hard as Microsoft and Sony try to copy and emulate motion gaming.
I will say this, though. Nintendo has very, very high hopes for the Wii U, which honestly I’m not so sure are very realistic. They’re aiming to surpass the Wii install base with the Wii U, win the hardcore back, win back third parties, and support 4 systems at the same time. Seems a bit of a stretch to me, but hey, I’m not going to rain on Nintendo’s parade or crush their dreams.

I’m studying architecture and I bet I have more business experience then the guys at sony, I mean come on, you should of at least looked at 3ds launch and the errors in that and acted upon it for the vita (reasonable price good games etc. Though for me I did buy 3ds at launch had no problem with price and games, though im just one person). They could of looked back at ps3 launch and how terrible that was at launch, tech to ahead of its time thus jacking up the price. Also “vita isnt doing well because it has titles that the appeals to westerners”? thats a load of garbage, Sony is a japanese owned company, they gave the japanese people the privilege of being the first people too own this console and you don’t bring out any games that would appeal to them? is sony just stupid or ignorant and just following a trend? Struggling isn’t exactly the word I would use, failing to win them over is more of what I would say. Seeing how the PSP, PSP the system that if it weren’t for monster hunter would have been dead long long ago, outsold VITA during the holiday buying weeks. Now that Nintendo is has full run of the franchise except for the PS3 remake of 3, if that ever really happens that is, I don’t see the VITA selling well ever. Lack of content haunted the PSP from its release and the same will happen with VITA.
The only danger the Vita faces is not having a strong launch. They need at least one great game to justify the purchase of the system ASAP. if Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land were launch titles, the 3DS would never have had an uncertain future. I wish Sony a lot of luck.
