Nintendo President Mentions Downloadable Stages For Future Mario Games

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told investors that there’s a possibility that Nintendo will add additional stages to games such as Mario as downloadable content. Iwata stated that it would not only give Nintendo additional profits, but it will enable the game to remain fresh in the minds of gamers, and lengthen the life of the product.

“As I referred to before, for example, this is the idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages. This will not only give us new profits but will lengthen the life of a product, in that it will never be out of fashion and can keep attracting public attention as long as many people play it.”

        1. WHAT A FUCKING JOKE. THEYRE BECOMING JUST AS AWFUL AS CAPCOM ALREADY HAS. AND I STOPPED BUYING FROM CAPOM. CALL IT WHAT U WILL BUT, THIS’LL GIVE THEM THE EXCUSE TO MAKE HALF-ASSED GAMES & CHARGE YOU FOR THINGS THAT SHOULD ALREADY BE INCLUDED IN THE GAME. THIS REMINDS ME OF UMVC3 & HOW YOU HAD TO PAY $5 TO UNLOCK CHARACTER OR CHARATER ATTIRE, OR CAPCOM CHARGING FOR CHEAT CODES WONT BE LONG BEFORE NINTENDO FOLLOWS DOWN THAT LANE. SORRY, IM A FAN, BUT NEVER A BLIND CUMDUMPSTER ONE. IF THIS IS HOW ITS GOING TO BE I’LL JUST BECOME EITHER A HACKER OR A PC GAMER. AT LEAST I’M GARAUNTEED FULL SATISFACTION IN EVERY SENSE.

    1. To be fair, he didn’t say how big those announcements would be. They announce a few things about the Wii U and the Nintendo Network as well.

      1. True, very true, its just sad to see how out of the loop he is (you know, if everything is revealed at e3) makes me wonder if NoJ isnt as close to NoA as they use to be.

        1. … meaning more people would probably buy the game if they knew that they’d get a lot more than just what came in the package. Nintendo has already stated several times that they would never charge for DLC and are highly against it, but would allow 3rd parties to do so as they wish on the Wii U. So the Mario stages would be free.

          1. They never said they wouln’t charge for DLC, they just said they would never release an unfinished game and charge users to download DLC that completes it. Yes, I expect a majority of their DLC to be free, but they will charge for some I’m sure. For example, the DLC they’ll offer with Mario games will most likely be bonus worlds, and depending on the size of the worlds or another factor they might charge a small fee. That’s fair though because they need to make money and they’ve already released a complete game in package, this is just bonus stuff.

            1. That’s my take on it as well. I wouldn’t want Nintendo wouldn’t an unfinished game just to appease certain game stores. I can’t exactly say if 3rd party developers will do that for the 3DS or not, though.

  1. As long as the product is a complete game and these levels will be an extra and the price will be right, I’m fine.

    1. SM3DL doesn’t have SpotPass/Wi-Fi support, and the game wasn’t designed to have downloable levels, and also the article says FUTURE mario games. So that will never happen.

PD: 100% Complete game too :D

      1. you are taking all this out of your ass

none of the things is sure, and the “future mario games” is only in the title which was made by sickr and is not mentionned at all in the actual quote

        1. I would think with a simple update it could be done. Either way this is really cool news as we already know that a new Mario game is in production! I’m so happy Nintendo is adopting a more main stream functionality with it’s systems.

      1. Try 2003. This is NOT a new concept. At ALL. And I’m talking BY Nintendo. FOR a 2D Mario game. THIS EXACT THING.

“IGN’s Craig Harris noted Super Mario Advance 4 as an example of a game that makes good use of the e-Reader.[3] IGN ultimately named it game of the month for its release in North America and the 11th best Game Boy Advance game ever made, calling its concept of adding levels “ahead of its time”.”

      1. TIME WARP!!!
And in recent news, Steve Jobs has recently stepped down from his position of CEO at Apple Inc. Apparently he stepped down due to “health problems”. Well, let’s hope for a quick recovery! More on this as it unfolds…

            1. I think by “every gold coin” the game and everyone who said it, means 3 in each level. The extra ones don’t count toward that. They only count toward unlocking levels that require a certain number of coins.

  2. OMFG after you just QQ about paid DLC. This is like the 100th time you’ve changed your stance on something nintendo. You as good as a politician.

    1. Not really, they’ve been saying for a while that they would do paid SLC, but unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo games are usually complete anyway. Theres no lack of levels in 3D Land and it was a good long game, adding a few extra levels here and there is nothing bad as long as it’s cheap.

        1. So did some of the Just Dance games, as well as certain editions of Guitar Hero and Rockband, you used Wii points to get extra songs.

    2. nintendo was against paid DLC because other companies just sell half of a game as a retail game and the other content that completes the game is paid DLC (that is their opinion, i don’t have experiences with DLC).
now, as nintendo may be forced by investors to apply DLC in their platforms, they will use them, but with the idea that they will sell a complete game as a retail game and DLC will accomplish its true goal: serve as extra content and, whoever don’t want to buy this DLC, can play a complete game without worries.

    3. They explicitly stated that they would consider paid DLC, but they wouldn’t make a game, and make levels, and then purposely decide not to put the levels into the game so they can charge for them instead. They mean they will make completely new levels afterwards, and sell these…

    4. Something tells me your comprehension skills are awful. They said that they wouldn’t release an incomplete game earlier, and now they’re considering adding new levels for further enjoyment on a game which was already complete. See the difference?

  5. Well, looks like I’ll be pirating Nintendo games as well from now on. I find DLC incredibly insulting. Any company who has it doesn’t deserve my money.

    1. I doubt Nintendo would just include half a game and then the rest on DLC and Nintendo has done something similar to this on the GameBoy (mentioned by someone in an earlier comment) so I doubt they would change their approach for it.

    2. you’re an idiot

nintendo has been clear, their games will be complete when they sell it to you
if they can add content later on top of that they will do it and im glad to hear it

you are stupid if you’re not happy to see paid dlc coming, its only a bad thing when companies start ripping off their customers with it by selling an uncomplete game to them which nintendo clearly said they wouldnt do

  6. Awesome so long as Nintendo don’t get greedy like Activision/EA. If they create proper expansions for a good price then I’m game :D I mean I wouldn’t say no to extra tracks/characters is Mario Kart.

  7. This is really good!

Some free new levels, some paid new worlds for mario, it will be great!

This is just what Level-5 did on professor layton, the game was complete with a lot of puzzles, but if you already solved them all, you could download every week a free new pack of puzzles, so you keep playing and don’t loose interest. Not like others companies, which launchs a half game, then make the other half paid DLCS, and when you’ve paid double the price, they launch a ”complete edition” for half the price and make you piss off!

    1. That’s a good example, I forgot about that one. The Layton games were all very long and complete with plenty of content, but there was more available to download if you wanted it. Obviously unlike Level 5 Nintendo are entitled to charges for extra levels because they are harder and require more time and resources to make than relatively static Layton puzzles, but that’s a good comparison.

  8. So, essentially they just discovered what DLC is about then? Took them long enough! I’d definitely be up for DLC for Mario titles! It’s definitely good that Nintendo is getting with the times. Let’s just hope they don’t start that online pass bull shit that people like EA Games started.

      1. While I’m wishing for that too, I hope they make it compatible with future iterations of the series. I wouldn’t want to buy all the tracks for Mariokart Wii U, then whatever the next platform is (or handheld) then that system couldn’t play those tracks and would have to be purchased again

      1. I do already, but I DON’T want to see them release unfinished games in the same way as EA just to kick the living crap of our wallets…

              1. Yes they did. But now they’re talking about using it :/ So they’ve changed their mind to be more liberal towards it. It can turn out to be great but it can also turn out to be a real Rupoor…

          1. What is wrong with you guys? Can you not read? Nintendo addressed that specifically and said they WOULDN’T do that…. Geez.

            1. fuck off you dumb ass they said they WOULD do it if it didnt mean releasing an unfinished product

              damn people these days..

            2. Yes, they also said that they wouldn’t do paid DLC but now they do. They’ve lied once and can therefore do it again. I don’t hate the idéa but are very sceptical towards it because I’ve never seen DLC done in a good way before so my experiences tells me that it can go wrong.

              1. They never said that the DLC will cost anything. Even if it does, they will release a full game then extra levels online- probably not for too much. Like they would make a Mario game with a full amount of levels (120 stars or 6-8 worlds) then have bonus levels you can optionally get. You would still get the full game, but the DLC is just extra for it you love the game and want to keep playing.

      1. Because it’s like releasing an unfinished game just to milk us for more money >_< AND they've told us over 9000 times that they would never do that… And now they do it o.o

        1. fuck off they said they wouldnt release UNFINISHED GAMES

          and they wont do it

if they can add content on top of that they also said they’d gladly do it

          1. Excuse me that I’m worried… But they also said that they was against paid DLC and watch what they’re up to now. I think this maybe can be a good thing, don’t missunderstand me on that point. But as a gamer of the old school so am I worried about online getting a too big role in gaming experience.

          1. My problem is that I think about what would happen if this became abused by Nintendo. They’ve told us many times that they wouldn’t do paid DLC and now they do. I’m afraid that they might go and become more like EA which would be horrible for the industry. I am a gamer of the old school so sure, I’m maybe a little paranoid about online features and what would happen if it became too big. But don’t I have the right to be worried about tomorrows gaming?

Also just to add: Paid DLC CAN be a good thing if done right, but I’ve still to see a company that does it right and until then (Wii U launch hopefully) I will be sceptical to it.

            1. I told you once, I told you a thousand times….

REGGIE…. said that. HE WAS MISTAKEN. REGGIE isn’t nintendo. He’s just a spokesperson for america. IWATA….IS nintendo, and he said himself, he addressed that issue personally, “Nintendo will NOT publish games unfinished to add DLC.”

Listen, I understand you’re worried about nintendo, I am too. But don’t you have faith in their devotion to their fans? Why do you worry after Iwata says that? It doesn’t make sense. Nintendo has NEVER copied others, and they never used competitor’s ideas. Why would they start now?

        2. there are 2 ways of doing DLC. there’s expansions for the game (Knights of the Nine, back to karkand) and there’s map packs and horse armor. hopefully nintendo would make expansion packs AFTER they complete there game.

  9. SM3DL with a level editor, so we can make npc’s, towns, and finnaly play in open world levels. An online service to share everyones creations.

    1. I really hope they have downloadable levels by Nintendo and the option to create/share as well.
I’m awful at creating levels, but I would love to see what everyone else makes! I think if they do both more people will buy the game because that would be awesome!

  10. I would love a few more levels in SM3DL… It’s such an awesome platformer. So unexpectedly challenging in the second half too.

  11. Etecoons and Dachoras

This is an excellent idea, and Nintendo seems to have the right idea about DLC. Nintendo will ensure people will play their games, many months after they’ve been released, thanks to DLC. I hope third parties follow in their footsteps, rather than silly things like DLC costumes and unlocking things that are already on the disc. I shouldn’t have to pay to unlock content that’s already on the disc. Consumers need to realize that we vote with our wallets, and when we plop down the extra money for content that’s already on the disc, we’re telling game companies that it’s okay when clearly it isn’t right or okay.

Anyhow, I welcome more Super Mario stages any day. Something I’m hoping Nintendo will implement in their upcoming 3DS 2D side-scrolling Super Mario game is the ability to fly. Flying in 3D Mario games is kind of difficult for me, so I hope they bring back the cape or the Tanooki suit, although I’d prefer to see the cape from Super Mario World. Oh, and more Yoshi time please!

  12. I see how people feel now im a pc gamer and I pay for DLC for some of the games and my xboxlive and my world of warcraft fees.I have all 3 consoles on top of that not saying i have alot of $ but im always paying out alot of $ for these things. So now Nintendo may have somekind of DLC. If i say i wouldnt do this for Nintendo i’ll be full of crap. This is Nintendo people i would be happy to do this for the Big N if needed hell i’ll do it just because my 3DS is kicking somuch butt rite now it amazing. I for one have noproblem paying DLC for Nintendo period

  13. If Nintendo have a sweet MMO like Naruto shippuden HELL YEAH!!! I’ll pay that and then some that would be EPIC

  14. Combined with a level builder, this would put the 3DS 2D Mario over the top. Even without the builder, though, that would still be great.

  15. Wouldn’t the obvious answer to this be a level editor? Forget downloadable stages, letting people build their own and sending random ones across wifi would be a massive win.

  17. Not Really, Its probably more for future games such as Super Smash Bros. 3ds Version but i highly doubt the dropping of fans within the game, Or games like Mario Party 3ds for new platforms to be played. I highly doubt that Mario Kart races will become downloadable content as it pertains to all online gaming which is diffrent from Call of duty only those who buy the DLC can join other who bought the DLC so the random feature in Mario kart will become totally useless.

  18. Yes!!! I have always hoped this for Mario games. Can’t wait to see what the next New Super Mario Bros. will bring to the table with this announcement.

  19. What the hell man! lies and more LIES! Nintendo said, that they are currently losing money and they will focus more on Mario to get the money back and because of that they will try these kinds of things to do it.

    1. which means half will be payed and half will be free
and they really mean make MORE Mario games=100% free mario DLC
