Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has revealed that the company plans to show off its next generation Unreal Engine “hopefully later this year”. Many people were expecting a showing of the Unreal Engine 4 at GDC, which has been taking place this week. Maybe we will finally see something at E3 in June.

Speaking of new engines, Quantic Dream, who made Heavy Rain for PS3, showed off their new engine in a short film running on PS3. So I’m guessing this is what Wii U is also capable of if given a chance.

I didn’t like that engine. They were trying to make it sci-fi photorealistic, but it looked more like mechanical toys. I think textures and the weird lighting messed up the results.
I did. They were able to use face and body from a real actress, her movements look pretty natural specially the face (like eyes, mouth, and expressions) everything running in real time, I think that’s a great achievement for Quantic Dreams.
I’m sure it’s a great achievement for them, and the animations were good, but the setup was lacking. Some of the animations were kind of stiff, too. Compared to engines like Unreal Engine 3, Frostbite 2, Cryengine 3, etc, it doesn’t look as impressive.
Believe me, I’m not hating on the demo. I am studying computer animation and I’ve been exposed to plenty of 3D content, so it’s like a thing I’ve developed for paying attention to the details of that kind of stuff. Now I can’t even watch a movie with CG animations or anime without looking at the textures, polygon counts, animation, etc.
It’s a good thing they used emotional appeal to sell the engine, because that’s really all there is to it. I feel like the Source engine can pull off whatever was going on in the video. Storywise, though, I thought it was kinda cool at the end. I was disgusted by how much it was relying on the emotional “I don’t wanna die!” appeal, but then I realized the operator was testing to see whether she felt fear. Hmm…fear as the final test of consciousness…interesting.
