The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim managed to win the coveted game of the year award at this years Game Developers Choice Awards which took place at the Games Developer Conference in San Francisco. Sadly, the incredible The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword didn’t even get a look-in, and failed to scoop up any awards. Here’s the list of winners:

I don’t want to come off as a troll here, but I don’t think it really deserved Game of the Year…I know they wanted to mix up the “Zelda Formula” a little to provide something new, but honestly I prefer the old formula…Also, the game was just too darn easy, I beat it with less than 30 hours logged on my file…I’ve spent more time listening to the CD that came with it, because that CD is a masterpiece. Maybe if they kept to the original “Zelda Formula”, and had Koji Kondo make the music, while providing an actually nice overworld, then maybe it could have won game of the year.
But Super Mario 3D Land should have won handheld game of the year! That game was pure genius!

And to be honest, I still didn’t finish Skyward Sword, even though I bought it months ago. I don’t know, but it just isn’t that fascinating as the previous TLOZ games. When playing the old games the first time, going to sleep was frustrating because I simply didn’t want to stop playing. Or going to school was even more torturing than it already was anyway, I just couldn’t wait to go home as fast as I can to finally continue playing. With Skyward Sword, I didn’t feel anything close to that. That doesn’t mean I think that it’s a bad game, not at all, but it just doesn’t have that special “something” all the older TLOZ games had. Anyway, for me Skyward Sword undoubtedly is nothing compared to the older Zelda games like Ocarina of Time, Windwaker or A Link to the Past. That’s just my opinion.

While Skyrim IS simply a great game, it doesn’t delve deep like Zelda. The reason Skyrim is rated so highly is because 1. Anyone can just play it, while Zelda takes getting used to all the controls etc, 2. Graphics. So many people choose graphics over gameplay these days, it isn’t even funny, and Skyrim’s graphics aren’t even that great. 3. There’s blood and you can kill whoever. BAM, the reason why every child aged 13-15 wants the game.
I played both the PS3 and PC versions, and it took me 3 save files on the PS3 before I gave up because I couldn’t even finish the main quest. Even on PC, I needed to download patches to fix about three parts of the main quest. Looking back at Zelda, it makes the underpowered Wii graphics into a beautiful game, with an incredible amount of depth and it was the second coming of Ocarina of Time in my opinion. Overall, the two games are incredible and both games have well over 200 hours from me. While Skyward Sword won it for me, I’m happy that one of them one GOTY at gdc.
I agree; this is why we need great 3rd party support. Nintendo makes some of the best games, but we need more options besides those same franchises.
Well Zelda is only for one system. Skyrim is for three so there is more people to like it. I haven’t played Skyrim yet but Oblivion was so true to life and was such a good design. If you play the new one on a good PC I am sure it would be like eye candy. Zelda is the best on Nintendo though that is for sure.
It would have been different if Zelda had more hardcore games and better graphics, because that is mostly what the “hardcore” gamers want these days. Or if Zelda was on 360 and PS3.
That is of course not needed and a bit stupid but there is not many hardcore gamers on the Wii. My GOTY was definitely Zelda with Skyrim and Uncharted 3 close behind.
The Zelda games, especially Skyward Sword, are generally safe titles. There’s little in terms of innovation; it’s basically rehashing an old formula with updates here and there on graphics and weapons alongside a different plot with a same general goal. I’m not saying they’re bad games, but it’s not going to stand out against something that’s more innovative and creative than its predecessors.

Skyrim itself isn’t innovative,since it feature features that where featured in previous Elder Scrolls games too,but the point is that a very large portion of the people that played Skyrim never played an Elder Scrolls game before and thus never even knew of these features.

Skyrim has a completely different level up system,and all classic Elder Scrolls Attributes,Classes and some Skills where removed,as a part of a simplification process that dumbed the general gameplay of the series,to make the game to appeal to a larger crowd.

Yeah you’re right CoD and Skyrim dont deserve to be put on the same shelf. However, Skyrim had around the same production time as Skyward Sword (5 years?) And its quality when it came out was absoloutely horrible and unforgivable. Shigeru Miyamoto has a famous quote that I’ll never stop saying, “A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.” Sure patches can fix the problems bit even now after a lot of patches Skyrim still has a ton of faults in it. The thing that pisses me off is although it has all these faults its won game of the year… That’s criminal. Okay, I love me some Zelda and haven’t played skyrim. (But DAMN Portal 2 was awesome!) SkySwo hasn’t captured me the same way TP or WW did. I’m slowly getting through it but the separation each place feels and The sky ain’t no Hyrule field. IN MY OPINION… FOR ME… Zelda games should feel like one big land of exploration and discovery. SS is a spot over here, a spot over there, some spots in the sky and some spots to put on your map (extremely helpful BTW!) It’s not the most absorbing Zelda I have played (DON’T JUDGE ME!) I agree, Skyward Sword was too fragmented to ever be considered open world. And that really pissed me off. It really wasn’t as absorbing as you say, because not many things in the game were compelling. You can tell even the makers didn’t think too much of it either because of how they promoted the butt out of the game. And they normally never promote Zelda so much like that! They said, “The world has depth,” “You’ll be playing it 50-100 hours,” “I’m never going back to traditional controls.” All of this: Bullshit. Fact is, they didn’t even have faith in their own game to let it promote itself. Despite all of this, however, I really liked how Skyward Sword stood distinguished from the other Zelda games in that it has its own identity and can be easily thought of as separate from the others, and it’s the narrative it has that makes it so different, and I like that. Not the best game in the world, but certainly has its place.

Not saying that game design equates to game difficulty, but with Portal the levels were a bit more immersive. Portal 2, however, its levels were very straightforward once you knew what to do.

This would bother me if the decision was made by a limited number (like 4 or 5) intelligent judges that are actual game designers that know what they were talking about. But since it is just a decision based on the number of votes made by the masses, it loses its validity. Why do I say this? Well, most hardcore gamers don’t use the Wii. Most of the votes were made by hardcore gamers that own either an Xbox360, a PS3, or a Gamerigged PC. Naturally the votes that Zelda got were to be overwhelmed by the massive number of drooling Skyrim fanboys that don’t care to look into other systems, just because the press has labeled them as casual. I am sorry for them, and for this world controlled press. In my opinion, since I have played both, I think that Zelda is the better game. I don’t hate on skyrim and I’ll admit that’s fanboyism to hate on it; but when the best game Nintendo produced in 2011 gets totally ignored, well to me that’s fanboyism too.
THANK YOU all the fanboys need to see this. This is exactly what I was thinking. People need to stop limiting themselves to games made by just a certain company. I am a HUGE Zelda fan. I have played every one and love all of them. I didn’t get skyrim when it first came out, but realized it seemed amazing, and went out and got t. Half the people posting here saying, “omg skyrim sucks” and “no innnovation” are just robbing themselves of an amazing experience. I used to be the same way, but now I realize that good games come from many companies, not just one. Is there anything wrong with being amazed by Zelda AND Syrim (*GASP*) The answer is a resounding YES. Both games are amazing in their own right. If you have not tried SKyrim yet, and refuse to just because it isn’t from your favorite company, you are robbing yourself of an amazing experience. Nintendo is my favorite company by the way and I own more nintendo games than I do games on other consoles.
Skyrim isn’t the thing to be blamed. The thing to be blamed is that Zelda won absolutely nothing. Even you are saying it’s an amazing game. So how com it got nothing? Why not give it a “best motion control” awards or something. You have to admit, that’s being biased too, isn’t it? I mean face it, some people just hate Nintendo (just like some people just hate Skyrim for no reason)
Well, there are some really weird people in the gaming industry, and I don’t think I’ll ever understand them for one; and on the other side, I wonder why they haven’t given a “motion control’ award. Maybe they were afraid to put a Nintendo game on the list.

Wanna know why it didn’t win? It’s not american. Those kinds of awards completely ignore Japanese games, even though Nintendo basically saved the gaming industry in the 80s.
Was just gonna bring this up. DEVELOPER Choice awards. So basically the developers voting for their own games or for companies they’ve had ties with.
Just be glad Call of Duty didn’t win anything

my bet is that Bethesda will be announcing a game of the year edition for skyrim at e3 and say that it is coming to the wii u with all of the dlc along with it
I hate to see Zelda lose, but if it did, I’m glad it was to Skyrim. Skyrim is amazing, and it did deserve game of the year in my opinion. It just stinks for Zelda that it came out in the same year as that other masterpiece.
Wind Waker will always be my #1 favorite Zelda game. But I still wish Skyward Sword had won just as a big “f*ck-you” to the hardcore gamers.
Zelda graphic are old on wii. Most americans hardcore gamers r in love with graphics. I played both, zelda was better but with the graphics it like been there done that. We will see what wii u have in store for zelda. Its clearly going to be good and with the graphics to talk…

Have to say that while skyward sword is good it doesn’t compare to Ocarina of Time. I first played Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. I ended up buying both games at the same time. I found myself ditching Skyward Sword for Ocarina of Time. I would spend all my free time after school playing Ocarina of Time. I don’t know how good Skyrim is since I haven’t saved enough to buy a PS3, but Skyward Sword is unfortunately not the next coming of Jesus Christ.
