Kid Icarus: Uprising Review

It’s been roughly twenty-five years since we last saw Kid Icarus but has the agonizing wait been worth it to see our newly revived angelic hero? Well the simple answer to this question is yes.Basic story:

In Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pit must defend himself against the dark goddess Medusa and her malevolent Underworld Army. With help from Palutena, goddess of light and guardian of the human race, he battles enemies in the air and on the ground as each chapter is divided into Air Battle and Land Battle stages. Players can enhance the action with a nearly unlimited arsenal of collectible weapons, from Bows to Cannons to Claws, each with their own unique characteristics and play style. Players can also fuse weapons together, resulting in a single weapon that takes on some of the characteristics of the original two.

Controls:

As numerous reviews have previously stated the controls on Kid Icarus: Uprising come across as rather hit or miss. The flying sections work extremely well. You use the Circle Pad to move and the Stylus to aim and shoot. It’s reasonably intuitive, but sadly you’re only in the air for a limited amount of time. It’s when Pit hits the ground that things don’t work quite as well. You use the Circle Pad to move forward and the Stylus to turn. It’s not as bad as other reviews have cited, but I admit that you could find that it feels slightly cumbersome. This problem is probably eradicated if you use the Circle Pad Pro, but it further reinforces the fact that Nintendo should have included a second Circle Pad on the Nintendo 3DS as standard.

Visuals and 3D:

Kid Icarus: Uprising looks magnificent running on the Nintendo 3DS. The level of detail and the environments really take advantage of the system. It may not look quite as impressive as Capcoms visually splendid Resident Evil: Revelations, but it’s certainly close. Where the game falls down is the 3D. The problem is that you’ll have a hard job using the Circle Pad and the Stylus whilst keeping your Nintendo 3DS still. This always poses a problem for 3D games as the Nintendo 3DS needs to be kept perfectly stable. You can use the stand but that only works if you’re sitting at a desk, so it isn’t entirely practical. To be honest I couldn’t play the game with the 3D on, which is a shame as when I did turn it on the game offered unparalleled depth.

Closing comment:

Despite the game’s jarring controls, Kid Icarus: Uprising is definitely one of the best games on the Nintendo 3DS. It’s fast and frantic, the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. It features a wonderfully epic soundtrack, and to top it off it includes an addictive multiplayer mode. It may have taken twenty-five years to see Pit return, but boy has it been worth it. Kid Icarus Uprising proudly stands alongside Super Mario 3D Land, Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7 as one of the best games Nintendo’s latest handheld has to offer. An essential purchase if you can just look past the frustrating controls.

  1. There’s no reason you can’t have the 3D on and play the game properly. It’s not that hard to keep still bro! Were you playing this in freefall or something?

      1. Should I be worried about Tsunami’s? lol

Side Note, You can use the A,B,X,Y buttons to move the camera instead of the stylus. Lady Paletuna told me this. :\ You can totally hold it with 2 hands and keep it steady.

    1. The vision of 3d is highly depended on ones eyes. Someone who has problems with their eyes can’t stand the 3d.

        1. It does not hurt my eyes at all.I just played Kid Icarus Uprising for 10 hours straight and when i play for about , hours on my PC, my vision gets blurred, after ten in 3d on my 3ds i see just fine.Plus i do not get it blurred almost never (which probably is the reason why i see just fine).
3d is actually more natural for the human eyes, so it probably is hurting us less than 2d.We see the real world in 3d you know.

        2. 3D hurts EVERYONE’S eyes?

I go to plenty of 3D movies. I game in 3D frequently.

I’ve NEVER had a problem with my eyes hurting during OR after. Not even once.

          My vision is perfect.

          Your argument is invalid.

    2. What some people don’t realize is that you CAN hold it with both hands and use the stylus. I can’t imagine trying to play the game by holding it with one hand. But really, all you have to do is hold it as if you held the 3DS normally, and use your thumb, index, and middle finger to hold the stylus. It works perfectly and is just as stable as if you were playing a game like Mario kart.

        1. Beautifully said mr. troll. Anyway, great review. I pretty much agree with it all, though I had no issues with the controls. The only way to play is using the touch screen for the reticle and the circle pad for movement, there’s no option to use both circle pads together. But using the circle pad pro makes it easier to hold on to. which in turn allows you to enjoy the 3d.

          1. kotaku now confirm wii u last kit is equel in power to 360 not stronger smh wii all over fucking cheap jew jap ninty lying trash!

Your right! nintendo is nothing but a miserably company
MICROSOFT and XBOX ARE THE BOTH THE BEST!!!!dicktendo makes only games for babies like super mario, starfox and more bullshits!

              1. Roy’s boyfriend… GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE AND PLAY WITH YOUR DICKSTATION MOVE AND SHOVE A KINECT UP YOUR ASS!!!!!

        2. I am asking that an administrator step up and block this persons post. Very inappropriate and offensive. This steps beyond a 14 year old fanboy. This is racist. Allowing these kind of posts will kill your credibility.

        3. LOL Idiots everywhere!
Ehm if you hate Nintendo WHY THE HECK ARE YOU DOING HERE? I really don’t understand how could exist people like you in this world!… Hater Troll… If you don’t like it just don’t buy it and stop making pointless comments.

          1. The key to defeating a troll is to realize no matter what you say they will always troll in reply, always. So the best thing to do is to be the better person and ignore them. If you dont feed them with attention eventually they will starve and die, or leave. Thats all there is to it.

    1. There’s nothing wrong with the land battle controls! You just need to learn how to multi-task. There is no more efficient way of delivering these controls. With another circle pad, you would be aiming slower, and not being as accurate. The controls are perfect, stop complaining.

      1. The land controls are good, but they still could have been better. I think they should have made the land battles work like Zelda.

        Circle Pad= Movement
L Button= Lock on/ Center camera behind Pit
        R Button= Shoot and fire!

See? This would have worked out great! If only this were a control option…

    2. I wouldn’t call the controls bad, they are just different from what we are used to in third person shooters, but after about 5 levels you get the hang of it with no problems. Also you can configure the controls a lot.

      1. if xbox forces u to use kinect ppl riot but if shitendo forces u to use circle pad for 2 yr development suckass graphic trash ppl praise it smh suckass nostalgia cracker weak race fags just cuz they original ya sucking their fail...spineless yesmen die cr

STFU u lying prick ‘different’ ya am not use to waiting 2 fucking yrs for a broken game retard blind fanboy faggot ass cocksucker whore wake up u dumbass u fucking stupid bitch with money u must also buy dlc too blackbustertv is right white ppl are fucking suckass tool garbage idiots. am roming this fail game u need to buy circle pad bullshit if it was microsoft ya be roiting but ninty gets a pass I swear fucking tools. have to buy circle pad for broken metriod clone jesus ninty takes 2 yrs and still fail.

        1. -_-

Now i can officialy say i hate Motion gaming, I hate any Wii game that is all about motion… and i completly hate Kinect.

Playing FPS’ on Wii and PS Move is fine… it’s just the motion is horrible.

And theres something called calibrating the circle pad for everyone who could have a problem with the controls.

Anything thats all about motion simply fails, people from 1998 who travel to the future in 2012 would be horrified with motion gaming… it sucks.

Also, also stop being a racist, it offends everyone here.

Stop saying that Kinect is the future, I comeback from work tired and yet microsoft wants me to move around playing?! WTF! NO THANKS! I’M GOING ON MY PC, PLAYSTATION OR NON MOTION WII GAMES OR 3DS! KINECT IS MOTION AND MOTION SUCKS.

Really, being a racist gives you a warning and block. Sickr will now come and ban you. Sickr Dis-approves your comment; even though he’s an all console fanboy; he hates the racism and homophobia which is why he disapproves.

    1. kotaku now confirm wii u last kit is equel in power to 360 not stronger smh wii all over fucking cheap jew jap ninty lying trash!

WRONG! controls r broken lying bitch the graphics r simple 2 fucking yrs to be force to buy circle pad ‘innovation’ ripoff. btw kotaku said wii u last kit was as strong as xbox 360 according to darksider 2 dev. there goes the more powerful smh damn wii u same power as 6 yr old tech and some games wont use 1080 p lol fucking disgraceful there trying to be sneaky wii u is another wii tactic. kotaku go now its there lol your more power was a lie now eat shit

      1. I’d hate to feed the troll but I just feel the need to point out you are wrong with the info you have. The Darksiders 2 developers just confirmed they have the game running on Wii U up to 360 and PS3 standards. Never said the Wii U could not do better, they just don’t feel the need to make the game look better. So no, we’re not getting 6 year old tech.

  2. Sickr, I had no trouble keeping my 3DS still without using the stand. I played in 3D for the whole game, and I even beat it that way too. It’s an amazing game, and I can’t see why you had to take off a point for the controls. There is no better, more efficient way to play the game, the controls are perfect, it’s just that the multi-tasking that is required from them is a little difficult for some people to use at earlier stages in the game. Overall, this game deserves a 10/10.

    1. Many dislike the control it’s not just him. I on the other hand lov it but can understand that some people can’t handle it.

      1. kotaku now confirm wii u last kit is equel in power to 360 not stronger smh wii all over fucking cheap jew jap ninty lying trash!

so even though the control is garbage ur gunna buy it to support shitendo wow u r human trash can u have no dignity u walking cum dumpster give me money make me rich. oh i see u want to touch kid icurus u fucking pedophile man up u sissy.

    2. I find the controls incredibly twitchy and unreliable – UNLESS you’re using the stylus.

The game support the Circle Pad Pro, but the analogue stick on it only mirrors the one on the 3DS unit itself. (In other words: You can’t use FPS-styled controls…as one would intuitively expect.)

This makes one wonder why they even bothered making the game “compatible” with CPP. Unless you’re left-handed I guess. But given that so many more people are right-handed and other games have implemented that kind of control scheme using it… It ends up being an ultra-fail for the majority of gamers who would wish to use it.

This not only negates the reason for buying a Circle Pad Pro, but also makes you realize that you’re FORCED to use a stylus for any real useful combination of accuracy AND speed.

Like many gamers, I prefer total control over my controls. I prefer the ability to play the game comfortably and with a natural feel.

On top of that… Not only is it infuriating that they failed to make this obvious option available to us gamers, but the stylus also makes my wrist very tired and causes it to ache after a while. I’ve tried with and without the stupid little stand that comes with the game with no better results.

I really can’t even bring myself to WANT to play the game that I spent $35 on because of it…and that SUCKS.

Guess being an old-schooler who did his time conquering the first Kid Icarus on the NES back in the day, I just prefer buttons under my thumbs. (I’ve never been any kind of advocate for touch or motion gaming. I’ve hated it thus far.)

  3. As a lefty… I guess I’m one of the rare players that did not mind this control scheme–yes, even with a stylus awkwardly placed in my right hand. I noticed from certain viewing angles, the 3D looks either blurry or doubled. Otherwise, the game looks fantastic! It still amazes me how great 3DS games look on the tiny system. Uprising is a game I might be afraid to have friends and family demo the 3DS with, but the core gamers I know will have a blast checking it out.

And I LOVED the 3D Classics Kid Icarus. I love how it looks, I love how it handles, and I especially love the dramatic improvements to saving, the interface and the gameplay in general. Kid icarus has never been easier to play! haha

    1. Actually, the 3D Classic isn’t as good as the original…they changed some sounds, like the reapers noises, and they tried to improve the frame-rate. I do like the added background, but honestly, it was better off sticking to the NES. But the file system is O.K., i preferred the passcode system, because you could keep going on any other game, not just yours.

      1. So, you’re saying that just because YOU don’t like it, it’s not good for anyone else either? Something wrong with liking and appreciating a revival of an old game? Get over yourself.

          1. kotaku now confirm wii u last kit is equel in power to 360 not stronger smh wii all over fucking cheap jew jap ninty lying trash!

@CHRISTOPHER dont let them fanboy geek yes men garbage eating trash push u around. i agree with u its trash bitches deal with aww ya gunna cry. hey chirstopher those bitches will even cry to professional paid reviwers yet these little kids are poor jobless bitches smh and if a favorite game gets a bad review oh its opinonated=wtf a review score is based on how bad things in a game are like bad control on kid icuris what am i suppose to just stare at a fag fairy oh i have to buy circle pad smh ninty=microsoft deal with it bitches. btw ninty fangirls buy wii shovelware garbage and praise that shittiest system ever made so that right there shows anything these clowns say is bullshit. graphics dont matter okay dont buy wii u stick to wii lol hypocrates. back then it wasn’t about graphics…yeah even though the consoles clearly put 8,16,32 and 64 bits right on the fucking machine smh fucking lying wasp virging cum buckets. chirstopher dont let those bully push u around go fuck there whit girls.

    2. You arent alone, sir. I, too am a lefty, but I managed to perfect the controls with my right hand. But I can gladly thank Dillon’s Rolling Western for that. The permanent controls really paid off :)

  4. I kept the 3D on 95% of the time. I don’t see why anybody wouldn’t unless they’re trying to save battery life or something.

  5. I personally love the controls, yes, they are something to get used to. That’s because that’s not a normal control scheme for us, though, it should be. It really offers great precision and speed that you don’t normally have with dual analog. the controls take skill and practice to master.

    1. Exactly, you need to have patience when learning the controls. You just need to keep trying. As I commented before on someone elses post, there really is no better way they could’ve handled the controls.

  6. Sickr, the controls are not changed with the use of a circle pad pro, as all it does is provide a left-handed person the opposite controls. I have the CPP and have tried to use it, with no luck. So that part should be revised.

  7. I haven’t had much problems with the 3D an the controls, at first I had to get used to the ground controls too but once you get the hang of it it’s fine

  8. This game is definitely the best on the 3DS so far. I would even go as far to say that it’s the best game of the year so far! You can tell that they spent a TON of time on this game. There’s so much to do, with the solo mode and the amazing multiplayer. I’m really impressed with some of the other stuff that they have done to support this game, as well. The whole AR card thing is fun, and I assume they will start selling booster packs, maybe even come out with another set some time in the future. All the videos on Nintendo Video have been really cool and funny, and the story/script are some of the best I have seen among video games recently.

Basically, I am a very satisfied customer right now because for $40 I got a great game with an awesome solo mode, addicting multiplayer experience, new weapon gems everyday, videos to watch, a BEAUTIFUL soundtrack to listen to, a card game to play, and a gourgeous 3D classics version of the original game.

NINTENDO, DO THIS FOR ALL YOUR GAME!

    10/10

  9. The circle pad pro is not supported in terms of dual controls. The stylus controls are truly more responsive anyway, rotating a camera with the 2nd circle pad would be too slow on the higher difficulties

Review kinda short, doesn’t do it any justice. Don’t miss this game if you played shooters on the DS proficiently.

  10. I had no problem with the 3d on this game. Keep it still and it won’t happen. Plus once you get used to the controls, they work really well with the game.

  11. ^me too. Plus the 3D helps alot. I actually like the controls. Although they do offer other controls for the rectile and stuff, i prefer the original.

  12. Amzing game, totally agreee with the ground controlling problems, but still be an excellent game, I think it can easillly stand as the fourth or fifth best 3ds game. Excellent graphics and the best 3DS’S REPLAY VALUE along mario kart 7. Just go and buy it :)

  13. Just picked up the game today, been playing for 7 hours and gotta say i had no problems with the controls whatsoever, no camera problems, no hand cramps.I would go as far as saying that once you get used to them, they work better than dual analog controls. But i guess it varies from person to person.

  14. Mark me down as loving the new, modern control style of Kid Icarus.

At first, I was scared when I hit the ground…it was unlike any control style I’ve played… Except it turns out to be similair to the touchpad controls of smartphones / iPads!

Once I mastered the “flick and hault” controls, I loved them. I loved flicking Pit’s perspective to make sure I was clear of enemies, then locked it down if I spotted one.

Put me down as a fluid and hardcore fan of this totally new control style!!

  15. I’m loving the game, I’m currently on level 14. The music is stunning and the story has me laughing; it doesn’t take itself seriously so I’m not going to hold it’s cheesiness against it!

The controls are an issue but it’s minor compared to how some are moaning about them. They certainly aren’t any worse than any other similar game such as Jet Force Gemini or Star Fox for Gamecube. and for the most part I dont agree dual analogue would have been better, not in the sky anyway. As for the hand aches, Mario Kart has a much worse hand cramp problem for me than Kid Icarus. Any problem in that area are down to the design of the 3DS and that god awful slider IMO

    1. Once you get used to the controls and set around with them… its fine.

MGS you need an circle pad pro to play it well and switch some controls if your an invertie.

Also, how is the 3DS 3D slider a problem? Perfect place if you don’t want to hit it by mistake.

  16. I’m left handed and it’s extremely difficult. to move and aim. I end up failing with my stylus in my right hand :P I cloud switch it from circle pad to x,a,y,b but I don’t think it’s feel the same. It’s bad that way :P It’s a great game though

  17. I have tremors so I literally rock all the time. I have played many motion control games with only a slight disadvantage. I have no doubt I’ll do fine once I get Kid Icarus and a 3DS

  18. I have played the game for like 3 days now … and I would have to say that I like the controls better then two analog sticks … just give it some practice people

  19. actually all the circle pad pro does for this game is make it easier for left handed people. you cannot use it to look around. i like this game but yes the only real thing wrong with it are the controls. if it had given the option to use circle pad pro as a camera stick it would have been amazing
