Super Smash Bros To Focus On Wii U & 3DS Connectivity

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that the key feature for the forthcoming Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS is connectivity between the two consoles. Sakurai reiterated that he’s only getting started on the project, and the connectivity features, so it will be a while before we hear about a release date.

“There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game. I intend to change direction a little as we go.

“The key to that’s going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U.”

“I’m really just getting started on this so it’s going to take time, but I’ll come up with something that uses that link as the game’s central axis, so I hope you’re looking forward to it.”

    1. The picture uses brawl pics as a character roster, and they don’t re-use pics for new games, so look out for some original art work if you’re looking for rosters, though none for a few years probs

  1. oh damn I can’t wait. its always the game I’m waiting for every time a new console comes out. its a bit sad that there isn’t much mario title for the wii, mines just been sitting on the shelf for a very long time untouched

      1. Yes but after finishing them I want more haha main reason why I ever by nintendo’s consoles. Just for the mario games

  2. I just really want a lot more characters, stages, another but longer story mode, great Wii U & 3DS Connectivity, and updated graphics. Oh yeah and some more EPIC soundtracks

        1. Wii U and 3DS use Nintendo Network, while Wii and DS use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. So u can expect it to be a ton better.

          1. yeah have you guys played Mario kart 7 that’s has communities, there’s no telling how smash bros will be.

  3. lame picture because crash bandicoot characters are in it, spyro and earthworm jim has nothing special with Nintendo.

  4. Honestly I hope they don’t make the unlockable characters so easy to unlock this time! Brawl was awful, way too easy getting all the characters. I got bored after like 2 weeks and never played again. Online was terrible too.
They need to go back to smash bro melee unlocking system. Now that game was an amazing smash bros game, unlocking someone was actually a huge accomplishment. Unlocking mewtwo was HARD, but I felt amazing once he was unlocked! Ahh, childhood is calling :)

    1. That’s probably, because you’re #foreveralone
Have you ever tried the Multiplayer Mode with Real People????
Or does you have life apart videogames?…. 2 weeks and never played again.. that’s too little time to get tired of such a magnificent game.

      1. Um, he has a point. By the time you’re done with Subspace, you’ve pretty much unlocked every character in the game. That is so fucking stupid.

  5. Dear Mr. Sakurai

please DON’T MESS UP THE GAME.

Take tripping off, or make a switch for it.

    Sincerely, every competitive gamer.

    1. Buy both systems then lol. The 3DS is a great hand held and Wii U will be awesome. I already own a 3DS and plan to buy a Wii U so I see no problem

    2. Guys, you have to understand that maybe he can’t afford both. He makes a really good point. Many people can’t afford even one game system let alone two. So while Sakurai should use the connectivity as best as he can, he should make the game possible to play with either system.

    3. I doubt he’s going to base this feature on game conent but rather on a unique playstyle or experience perahaps that we don’t know about. I’m sure Sakurai wouldn’t make something so exclusive that we’d have to have both games.

  6. I wonder if this means itll be like two separate games, like when im not playing on my wii u can I play the same ssb in the car on my 3ds. I defiantly stoked for this one. Nintendo’s innovation at work.

    1. Dont want connectivity, then dont get a 3ds either. Nintendo never forces you to connect devices together just to play a game, (save for TLoZ: FS) so just play the WiiU version. It’ll have the same content if not more than the 3ds will have

  7. I’m feeling better online(I don’t do online stuff and friends codes like everybody else does) better and longer adventure mode.( I love story time) expanded roster with viewtiful Joe, bomberman, sora, megaman, crash bandicoot(I believe he had a couple games with nintendo), and if it’s POSSIBLE and not too ridiculous then epic Mickey. ..his first epic Mickey game was an exclusive for the wii right?

    1. Yeah he could work, in fact I heard he’s the only Disney character that has a possibility but with his Epic Mickey design

  8. This is exactly why I’m expecting to see the NSMB games for Wii U and 3DS to have level editors and be able to trade levels between games. They could be distributed online and via StreetPass.

The inclusion of it there would be a good way to test the waters for that kind of functionality in the next Smash Bros. games’ stage builders.

  9. I’m not sure about this. On the one hand while the connectivity might be a good thing (presuming it works like the GBA connectivity and Nintendo 64 transfer pack did) as far as bringing characters and stuff between the two games goes, saying Nintendo will ‘focus’ on it makes me fear they’ll put less effort into the more important elements of Smash Bros.

  10. I think this could be awesome as long as it doesn’t become a huge requirement. I would love to play both versions separately. I would an HD Smash Bros at home and Smash Bros on the go =D.

  11. I have high hopes for this game. even though no smash bros. has ever disappointed me. They should bring the smash bros. 64 elements to this game. NO melee please no melee. melee has good but all it was, was a sped up game style. Brawl was great, only thing was it was rush, characters were too easy to unlock, towards the end of the story sonic comes out of nowhere and they took roy and mewtwo out. other than that the game was great. And I dont see what people are talking about with the online being terrible? I’ve had brawl since march 8th 2008 and it has never lagged unless someone I was facing connection was red. but other than that no lagg what so ever. Tripping made it more realistic, So please don’t make it like melee, make it like your first smash bros success. with some brawl elements and a couple of melee elements.

  13. Good start on the characters. They better bring back all the characters from melee and brawl or i will be disappointed. Plus I like the idea that was rumored about custom characters.

  14. I want mah MEGAMAN NAO!!!!

No seriosully, I would LOVE if Megaman was in the next SSB. I loved him from the moment I played the first Megaman game (my 3rd year or something close to that).

And more on topic, I don’t really care what they add as long as they keep the main formula of the game. Everything else is an addition, it can’t be bad.

  15. Sakurai will deliver as always. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with this time. I hope they make Ganondorf as badass as he is in Melee. Even though he was a C. Falcon clone he was really strong.

    Leave luck to heaven.

  16. they better include dlc also imo the only dlc included should be for third party support and let the game focus mainly on nintendo characters P.s. people may not agree with me but they should include dillion from dillions rolling western

  17. ooooo ahahah ooo ah (i think that at the end when they are anouncing the winners you should be able to move your characters arms with wii motion)

  18. Here’s my predictions for control options:

3DS Version (also applicable for Wii U):
    Nintendo 3DS system
Nintendo 3DS with Circle Pad Pro

Wii U Version (not applicable for 3DS):
    Wii U Controller
    Wii Remote (sideways, like Brawl)
Wii Remote + Nunchuk (like Brawl)
Classic Controller / Classic Controller Pro (like Brawl)

  19. I hope that they make the 3DS like an RPG style system where you can upgrade the moves of characters by battling alot and then you can transfer that character’s data to the Wii U version and see them brawl it out in marvelous HD. My wish list for this game includes better online with DLC and communities, a better story mode with dialogue that makes sense, every character from the past games as well as new characters like Heracles, and an eight player versus mode featuring four Wii U controllers and four 3DS systems (or wii remotes/classic controllers). Another idea that I had was that the 3DS version would play like the class Super Smash Bros. games and the Wii U version would be a 3-Dimensional fighter like Dead or Alive and Tekken. Just wishful thinking is all folks!

  23. That image is so unbelievably fake! Are you fucking kidding me???!!!
I mean, come on! PacMan, Spyro, Megaman, Crash (WTF!), Rayman, Banjo, Earthworm Jim…
You’ve got to be really stupid to think it’s real.
