The rumours have been circulating for months and finally Sony has revealed its Smash Bros clone which is titled PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The game is being developed by Super Bot and is exclusive to the PlayStation 3. The game is due to be released sometime later this year. Here’s a nice little round-up of the details which have been provided so far:
- Smash bros gameplay confirmed
- 60 FPS confirmed
- multiplayer with options
- 3rd party characters are in
- 3 layers of super for each character, the Bars represent your “Super meter”
- Mash Up Stages featuring elements from multiple fanchies, like God of War/ Patapon, Ratchet and Clank/ with God of War elements.
- The aura glow around the characters signifies that your Super meter is full. It is not always present.
- You can use D-pad or Analog to move around
Confirmed Characters:
- First Party: Parappa the Rapper: Parappa is small and fast; a short-range melee character. His moves come right out of Chop Chop Master Onion’s kung-fu dojo, though you’ll have to be right up on your opponents to connect with most of them. One of his most useful moves is also pretty funny: he brings out his Boxy Boy boom box (it arrives with the classic “Aw yeah!” hip-hop sample) to the play field, where it spews AP bubbles that can be picked up to charge super meters. Smart players were using the boom box to level up and use Parappa’s skateboard super, which dashes through and knocks out anyone in sight. It’s a total dick move, but it works, and wins matches.
- Radec: Killzone character Radec isn’t as cute as our favorite dog rapper, but he makes up for it with badassness. He’s quite the opposite of Parappa, working best as a long-distance attacker, with projectiles and lasers that easily land hits on the opposite side of the play field. His level one super gives the player a reticule that can be placed over any character to direct a large-scale fire attack.
- Sweet Tooth: Those wanting to play as a strong bully will want to choose Twisted Metal’s scary clown hero. He’s huge and all about space control, with attacks that can send you flying. Up close he hits really hard, so stay away if you can. I loved using him to shoulder check enemies to send flying across the screen. His level three special is flashy, bringing fire and parts flying out of the sky to his body to turn him into Mechatooth, armed with a machine gun that will easily mow all opponents down.
- Fat Princess: No one picked the big girl in the first rounds, but I found that she was one of my favorites after trying her out. I fell in love after seeing her match opening animation, which has her instantly plumping up after downing a piece of cake. Princess has swinging mid-range attacks that are fast and reliable, and they provide good defense, as a lot of jumping and blind swinging can take place. She’s surprisingly agile and has lots of power.
- Sly Cooper: Sly is unique in that he has no defense at all. Instead, and true to his character, he can turn invisible by hitting the block button. This makes him quite a bit more sneaky, as he can get behind opponents to use his special moves in close range. His normal attacks glide him from platform to platform, and he can fly/attack diagonally, making him great at recovery.
- Kratos: Anyone that has enjoyed any of the God of War games will feel right at home with Kratos, as he plays exactly the same in All-Stars. He’s the best all-rounder of the initial line-up, with a mix of both ranged and close quarters moves. His spin attacks take up huge space, and his spear-based pokes will push you back. He’s a beast.
- Third Party Characters have been confirmed, but none have been revealed yet. Pulling from 2 decades of material, so chances are good for some PS1, and PS2 characters.
Sounds like people are already calling it “Sony Smash Sisters” though

Besides being fat, Fat Princess and King Dedede have nothing in common. I’m pretty sure Fat Princess wasn’t inspired by King Dedede. Solid Snake is not part of Nintendo, in fact he original appeared on the Playstation. Solid Snake can even be in this game if Konami wanted him in it.
No, he originally appearedon the MSX computer in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. There were also two Metal Gear games for the NES.
Sorry, I meant the Metal Gear Solid series. I know Solid Snake appeared on the first two Metal Gears. But it was MGS that made him extremely popular, and his appearance in Smash Bros. is based on the MGS games. But my point was that MGS’s biggest releases were on the PS consoles.
To the folks that are talking about copyright issues, the concept of bringing characters from different universes together in one game is a little bit older than SSB. The Super Robot Wars series made it before in 1991 (eight years before SSB), it was not a Brawling game, but an Tactical RPG, as you can read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars

What? LittleBigPlanet has a gameplay style similar to SSB: it’s an on-the-surface simple platformer which aimed at both casual and hardcore audiences and it sold well enough to warrant a sequel. Not to mention all the critical acclaim.
More characters will be added. As far as the lineup being “not as epic”, I’d much rather play as Sly Cooper than R.O.B. or Pikachu…

Actualy I have. Ive had a game boy colour and I played NES and SNES as well as sega genises. I never had a N64 but I did get a gamecube.

I think you need to understand that Nintendo was the first one to really bring games mainstream and run with it. Every console afterwards has tried to reach that same powerhouse status through similar means; doesn’t mean they’re copying -_-
Everyone copies the best in business it’s a fact of life, not just for games. Nintendo dominated and made things mainstream so it made sense to release things that people were “into” at the time. Yes Nintendo have been the ones taking all the risks and revolutionizing the industry, and it does look bad seeing others copy and benefiting from their success. However coping in many ways is a good thing. If no one copied Nintendo then their would be no competition and with that there would be no real drive to continue to innovate. Also most companies don’t just copy ideas, they usually try to improve upon them somehow which helps things move forward. Sony & Microsoft have tried many times to come out with fresh ideas but have been less successful, Nintendo are just better at innovating. Either way they all end up interpreting each others ideas in one way or another and it’s their rivalry and coping that keep this amazing industry alive.
Even if the game was good, then it still won’t launch at the best of times. Mostly due to the fact that the next Super Smash Bros has just entered development, and that most all people will just hang on for that if they have a Wii U or 3DS. Launching at the end of this year is bad – Wii U release, and launching at the end of next year is bad – no doubt, new SSB.
Sony will have to be really lucky with this game.
It’ll be 2 or 3 years before the next SMB launches, so there’s no problem, I’ll play this while we wait xD

Just because there can be 4 players and the camera accommodates for that doesn’t mean it’s a copy. It doesn’t even appear to work the same way, so just chill and enjoy both games.
Honestly, super smash bros is the best… But I would like to see how this game plays out…. Clearly the hosting concept of this game maybe be better and I hope better characters come out…. I am a die hard Nintendo fan because they care about quality of content rather than quaility of graphics but let’s see how Sony will measure up to this… It looks like fun man! What the hell?, this is the only site I’ve seen in which the users have a unanimous negative response to it. I am a big fan of smash bros. and I find this game very exciting and will be getting it for sure, Nintendo doesn’t own the whole genre, and as long as other companies do efforts worth playing, I think they should go with it.
Seriously, it may be very similar, but I’d love playing with jak or Cole MacGrath in a brawler like this, so I’ll be looking forward to playing it… we need more crossovers and less useless fanboys.

Relax people it happened. Still I’m going give this game the review it deserves. Just like I did for CN’s Smash clone last year on 3ds and Ps3. Going by what I’ve seen the gameplay is a very bad copy paste of Brawl, even has the super moves and brings nothing new to the Smash bros evolution. We at the media (other then ps3 fanboys) will deal with this trash once It’s out. I feel bad for Sony.
Copying only gets so far and this one lacks so much innovation, much like many recent Sony games. This was done as a quick cash scheme nothing more nothing less. Listen up fans going on about Nintendo sueing Sony for the Smash patent? The industry has leached off other ideas for decades. Nothing illegal is being done, other then making a out right bad rip off.
Also this is not the first smash clone, its the first identical brawl clone though. Dreammix fighters with Konami, Hudson Soft and Bandai brought Optimus Prime and Simon Belmont to life. For the Gamecube in Japan. However it was unique to the melee engine. Capcom and ubisofts Smash clones were different to but also failed. But the Tmnt clone was pretty fun, just not better then Brawl or Melee.
I’ve been reading your comments and you Sony fans need to face facts this game will have better online the brawl, but over all the game is not going to do well. Sony was very creative during It’s Ps1 days, but not anymore. Like the Ps move this will fail too and fast. Still they want to release the game, playing bad games is just part of the job. I totally remember DreamMix Tv Fighters it was a pretty cool concept. From what Ive seen of this “new” SONY did copy Smash Bros Brawl to T and didn’t even try anything original. I know other Industry reviewers are totally rolling their eyes right now at this.

This is completely irrelevant to Nintendo news. Honestly, I’m so tired of hearing about this game on here. I’d rather read about it on a Playstation based news site. And there’s nothing to show whether it’s like SSB at all yet. It just SOUNDS like it’s similar. But just because someone did it first, does not make them the owner of the type of gameplay. They essentially added platforming to a fighter. So we could complain that they “cloned” Mortal Kombat. I’m so tired of seeing the hate for a game that just barely got announced.

YES you know how the game works. Sony fans play Sony. Nintendo fans grew up with the Big N and Sega. So they are bit more tamer then PS3 and Microsoft fan boys. We didn’t beat up other kids for playing either SNES or Genesis when I was a kid. We would try each others games and have fun. That was the point of gaming then PS2 and Xbox changed that by calling people that play Kids game play Nintendo. It’s been a mess for a decade now and doesn’t so signs of stopping sadly.

They were always the cool console while Nintendo was the kiddy console. Thats why SEGA had the slogan “SEGA does what Nintendon’t” Definitely friendly competition. Its also why SEGA’s Mortal combat had blood and Nintendo’s didn’t. Kid on the playground have always made fun of kids that had different interests then they did, even before games existed. What people and sony fanboys need to understand and realize is that. though smash bros is not and was not the first fighting game ever. That game changed the way fighters are now. if you think about it every game from street fighter to soul calibur has some sort of quarter circling in it, except for a few (mortal kombat just to name one). But when smash brothers hit the scene in 1999 they changed it with a new unique way fo fighting. A ONE BUTTON STYLE FORMAT. That’s what true fans of not only smash bros. but nintendo is complaining about they fact that sony was going to do this isn’t a suprise but it’s a smack to the face of smash bros. veterans and to the series in general. Sony and sony fanboys need to face the fact that Sony copies, now there’e nothing wrong with that, to get a little inspiration from such a success company but saying “oh it not a copy/clone because it has super meter or high graphics” doesn’t mean a thing. super meter is just Final smashes on crack, which nintendo already thought of that since the original but Sakurai thought it would be too much. and sony obviously believes that graphics make the game and not gameplay so of course they make this game in the future instead of back when nintendo started theirs. I own all three systems Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 but it’s easy to see that this is a clone and anyone who think otherwise is crazy.

It’s indeed a ripoff, but how does it hurt you? People who want to play it will play it, those who don’t want to play it don’t have to play it. So you either gain something, or everything stays as it is. You don’t lose anything with this game coming out.

Also, the creator of SSB should feel flattered. He did such a great job that the guys at Sony didn’t even try to change things. They took the SSB formula and copied it. That is the biggest compliment a game designer can get. And that also assures you that the game won’t be better than SSb since it’s a copy which doesn’t try to improve. Same as the Sony Move, which was better than the standard Wii controller, it wasn’t as successful since it took the same idea and just copied without adding anything on it.
