Miyamoto Admits Nintendo’s 3DS Launch Lineup Was Poor

Shigeru Miyamoto has openly admitted that the Nintendo 3DS launched without a strong software lineup. Miyamoto says that the company would have loved to have the big hitters such as Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 at launch, but they just weren’t ready at the time.

“When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn’t have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn’t have Mario Kart 7, we didn’t have Kid Icarus: Uprising,” he explained. “We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren’t able to deliver them at that time.”

“We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising; but looking back we have to say we realize the key software was missing when we launched the hardware.”

    1. bout time? both reggie and iwata has said that launch lineup was not up to snuff and that was last year

      1. Wow…..were you trying to make an insult….?

Wow….that….that was horrible…..read that to yourself and understand how stupid it was….

  1. It was but I still got to play OOT on a handheld and my huge ds libary backlog of games! Now the 3ds is on its way to being the best selling handheld of all time. Cant wait to see more 3ds games at E3. FF7 for 3ds please!!!!!!!!

  2. Well they learned from their mistake. Hopefully this means when the 3DS’ successor launches 7+ years from now it will have strong first party software.

      1. Aha that too. It makes me pretty excited because now we know the Wii U software line-up should be promising. Can’t wait till E3!

    1. I’m imagining how a successor would be and I can’t find an idea! What’s it gonna have! Rocket boosters? That’s why I’m confused on next gen consoles.

          1. Really? I thought the fourth dimension involved our senses. (sorry if that sound stupid.)

            1. It’s okay, not a lot of people now that. You have the 3 axes of X, Y, Z and the point in time it takes place. It’s why Doc Brown tells Marty, “You have to think 4th dimensionally.” Sense themselves aren’t really planar dimensions, but more of a way to describe things with dimensions qualitatively.

  3. At least Nintendo made up for it by lowering the price.

Hopefully they have learned from this mistake.

  4. its cool. Everyone made mistakes, and thats normal. Same thing with very talented people. What is very bad however is people who repeat the same mistake over and over, and never learn it.

  5. That’s okay Miyamoto and Nintendo, I forgive you. I still got to buy my awesome games eventually and got those 20 free retro games for getting my 3DS at launch. It’s all good.

  6. The Only Pokemon Champ

this is like the fifth post ive seen of nintendo admitting their mistake
come on people, they actually admitted
other companies wouldnt dare come down to such level and admit its mistake
    stop pestering them

  7. this isnt false but many people bought it because they KNEW nintendo would support it with great games, they’re 1st party so they cant cut support of their new console unlike 3rd party who can decide to cancel projects they deem not promising sales-wise (and that happens when console sales are low)

    1. I agree I purchased my 3ds mostly because of oot 3d when I realized it was not a launch title I said who gives a shit and bought it anyway. Though I almost burst a testicle (rofl) when I realized eshop was delayed so its not just a shitty line up its the eshop to.

  8. Nintendo is owning vita! Nintendo 3ds has also made up for the shit launch line up. I remember going to get it the day it came out at 8 AM and getting nintendogs plus cats it was a good game for a while and it lasted me a long time. And really I don’t believe the line of 3ds was as bad as psv was.

      1. a line up of ports and future games that will appear on the ps3….makes me wonder why ppl wanna vita if they can play the same game on a HD TV

        1. uhh? is PORTABILITY ring a bell to you? can u put a HD TV on your pocket and take it wherever you go?

          1. But the thing is, the guy is right, there were no games GEARED towards portability for the vita.

I admit the lineup was good, but the average gamer sees the gem of the lineup (Uncharted) as just a spinoff title that they don’t need to play, just like the average pokémon fan sees the mystery dungeons as games they dont need to play.

            1. I was going to purchase vita but I gave up I heard that cod, skyrim, and rage could come to vita so if they do I will purchase it but that’s iT!

              1. I don’t think the Vita could handle Skyrim.

Hell. The PS3 couldn’t handle Skyrim properly.

            1. hey anti-joke chicken. does all pockets have the same size? LOL sometimes use your common sense :D

      2. The 3DS launch titles sucked!! The Vita launch was 10 times better.
3DS owning Vita? LOL! Just because it sell more doesn’t mean it’s a better console. It’s just more popular and cheap.

  9. “YOU DONT SAY?” haha ive been hearing this shit since nintendo 3ds was launch. could they just MOVE the fuck ON and concentrate on what they can do.

    1. what i mean is, yes nintendo is honest enough to admit its mistake BUT i am tired of all this ninty said that the launch is shit and that. cant count how many times they told that to media. WE GET THE POINT NINTENDO SHOULD STOP WHINING OF WHAT IS ALREADY THE PAST AND TALK ABOUT SOMETHING OF A COMEBACK

    2. Actually at the beggining they blamed the price. wich I thought was dumb, but atleast now they admit to lack of games.

  10. I always liked how Nintendo has always been honest to its fans.
It will never hold anything back that I shouldn’t openly admit to.
If it was Sony or Microsoft, they’d tell you something else so that they could mask it.

  11. Nice of you to admit that Miyamoto but I think people fail to realize that except for the original Gameboy and the GBA, all of your handhelds have had lousy launches.

  12. i would buy a 3ds if they made a megaman battle network game or a starforce one but that is never going to happen

  13. The reason for the vitas poor sales is ports.the ps3 is selling well now and all the vita has is ports(exept uncharted and a few)of the ps3 . It has nogames that take advantage of it unique hardware. The 3ds may not be all that but look nintendo bribes us with AR cards and maybe with stickers. We all got to use the gyro in a unique way (oot sling shot) had games that were not on any previous system and the ports were improved. But look at monster hunter tri g the multiplayer makes that game both online and local co-op(single and multicard) .but no game makes vita unique is it m vs c 3 the one on ps3 has more content.is it hd ps3 got that too is it the touch screen apple google ds got that to .AR have you heard any news on the vitas ar compatibilities like the 3ds.and the 3ds brings 3d with out glasses, original (until lg came with the 3d phone).the vita from the onset was a mixture several ideas no new one and for sony their loss is gonna be terrible and also nintendo did not make up to 500 million loss that was their predited loss (their analystfailed again) the actually was less than that due to they sold more 3ds than what was expected and also software sales.go sony go sony

  14. Glad to hear them admit it. You made up for it with the ambassador program, Iwata took a pay cut to make up for it. It’s all in the past now. Just be sure not to make the same mistake with the Wii U. Leave luck to heaven.

  15. For those who care, the “unexpected” game that Game Informer was going to announce this week is The Elder Scrolls Online. There’s also no concrete info on Wii U specific info in this issue.

  16. Yeah I was really expecting to have Kid Icarus: Uprising by launch by nevertheless it took forever to be released. Oh well as long as Nintendo learns and corrects it’s mistakes I will be one happy customer of their products.

  17. This isn’t really worth reporting as him and everyone else have admitted this plenty of times already

  18. Pity Nintendo can’t foresee these mistakes BEFORE they release the console. Would it have really killed them to delay the 3DS a bit and wait until a couple more big games were available? They should have learned from experience that a weak line of launch games was a bad thing.

  19. Wh-wh-wh-whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy can’t nintendo see the mistake. WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
