Fight At Skyloft In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The next Super Smash Bros. is not going to be released any time soon – in the meantime, play Project M. Project M is a Super Smash Bros. Melee-inspired mod that can be applied to Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The mod is legal because you need to have a copy of Brawl in your possession.

Project M’s purpose is to make Brawl’s gameplay mechanics similar to Melee’s style. Project M also removes the random tripping prevalent in Brawl, balances the characters, and adds new stages such as Skyward Sword’s Skyloft. The mod is free of charge and can be downloaded from Project M’s website.

“Project M is playable on ANY NTSC Wii, without any hardware modification, and even without any longterm software modification. All that is needed to get started is an SD card and a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.”

      1. i didnt get it? what ballance? anyway in the meantime i want to check this out.chech these lies witch developers saidno darksiders 2 for wiiu for examble

    1. The reason they don’t have a PAL release is because the team making this mod (also known as the PMBR) is constantly changing codes and such for their own dev, version, which would make it a huge pain to convert constantly changing codes and files to a PAL version of the game. Once they finish or get close to finishing the project for NTSC, then they’ll start worrying about converting it to other regions.

    1. a) Don’t wanna mod it (not for any good reason, I just don’t like illegitimising my collectibles)
      b) Not worth importing and paying for a new brawl just for this (Would the NTSC one even recognise my PAL save file? Certainly not worth it if it won’t even have all the stages/characters)

Hopefully they adapt it for PAL

      1. the PAL save wouldn’t carry over, but the mod unlocks all the characters and stages for you…
Anyways… they’ll most likely port it to PAL eventually… but that is a lot of work and they don’t have manpower to work on porting and the continued development of the mod at the same time, so they’re saving it until the end…

  1. Well, I’m pleasantly surprised to see this post. P:M is amazing, way better than Brawl could ever hope to be imo. Each character has his or her own unique tools to use in fights (you should see what they did with Lucario, holy crap!), making them more balanced. I could go on, but if it were reading this post for the first time, I wouldn’t want all of the surprises spoiled, and you could read all of the changes on the site if you wanted to.

  2. Just play the game the way it was meant to be played!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Modders think they know how to design better than Nintendo EAD and Sora Ltd.

    1. I agree that Nintendo makes a solid game but common the tripping is in my opinion the only reason to get this mod. It’s so annoying!

      1. tripping isn’t cheap, you trip when you second guess your move like when you try to move quickly but change your mind you’ll slip its not random at all its very accurate and it actually makes the game more balanced your talking to a pro here

        1. Oh yes… that’s clearly why i kept tripping while dashing…
The tripping in brawl is random… completely random… and if you don’t knw that, then i question your status as a pro…

          1. WRONG, you said it yourself you trip when you dash, your hitting another button too quickly and changing your mind too quickly thats why you trip. And i’ve played the game almost everyday since its come out so yea i consider myself a pro.

            1. when i say i trip when i dash, i men when i only dash… as in i only move the control stick without pushing any buttons…Tripping in brawl is random… Can you seriously say that you can make your character trip whenever you want?.. cause if so, then i’d be really impressed…

              1. I dont know the exact rules of tripping all i know is that when I trip I KNOW it was MY FAULT because i second guessed my move I don’t feel like the game cheated me isnt that proof enough?. Like i said, i play the game everyday.

                1. Then you might find this a bit interesting… A guy once did a test by using a single wavebird controller assigned to 3 controller ports, running 3 marios back and forth with identical button inputs… you can find the result here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmCtH2QTsPw
I hope this will clear it up for you…

                2. Tripping is random you dumb twat.

Oh, and the developers are perfectly entitled to mod this game, so whoever said “play it the way it’s meant to be played” can just shut the fuck up

        2. While it may happen only when turning around and the start of a dash, it is still completely random. I fail to see how a random factor can make a game balanced, especially if it’s a punishment for just wanting my character to walk/run to another part of the stage. And trust me, getting rid of tripping isn’t the only reason to play this mod.

        3. i know right, the only unbalanced characters are metaknigth, olimar an the ice climbers, can’t never scape from the grabbing.

          1. metaknight is not unbalanced try beating me when i play as wolf or toon link and you wont even be able to get near me.

            1. i play every day with green snake so am sure i have beaten tha crap out of you before, like i do with every wolf and falco n_n (i don’t mean to be rude )

            2. Meta knight does not have a single bad matchup… and i believe sakurai said in an interview that he purposely tried to make him the best character in the game…

              1. toon link has 3 different projectiles and is quick metaknight has no projectiles and cant even get close to toon link plus metaknight is as light as a feather and easily ko’ed

                1. Getting through projectiles isn’t too hard… one tactic is you can run and shorthop, airdodge to the ground and hold shield until you shield projectile and jump out of shield and so on…
Also MK is fast, has a few pretty good killing moves plus the best recovery in the game… not to mention the transcendent priority on his move… which means that his attacks won’t clank with anything, but will beat out any attack that isn’t disjointed with more range than him…
Also there’s planking (stalling at the ledge) which is very powerful with MK…

                  1. all true but when toon link has a arrow a boomerang and bomb coming at metaknight all at once its pretty hard to get passed without getting hit or having to block, and the spread on toon links bomb is better than you’d think

                    1. airdodges and shield… if he manages to throw out everything at once, then it’s a bit harder… still doable…

          2. Unbalanced doesn’t just mean overpowered, it can mean bad too. Just look at some of the lower tiered-characters in Brawl like Bowser. He’s so slow that he’s barely even worth using. In P:M, he’s still slow but now has super armor frames on a lot of his animations and his model is even bigger, making more of a powerhouse than he already was. And, ironically enough, those characters you mentioned haven’t been released in any demo of P:M yet.

    2. Being modded doesn’t stop you from playing it the way it was meant to be played. If it requires a legit copy (and so won’t take Ninty’s deserved money), who cares?
If anything, it’ll breathe new life (and sales) into an old game.

  3. I just came from the characters page on that site and I really think they took out more than they added. Why the hell would you go out of your way to make Falco play like he did in Melee. Part of my problem with the clones in Melee was that they were literally repainted character models. At least in Brawl they have SOME diversity and now these Project M people are going to take that away?

This is why I don’t like the competitive crowd in Smash to begin with. It’s always “remove, remove, remove” with them.

    1. they have added ALOT more than they have removed, tons of work has been put into this project…maybe you should do some research before you judge something

    2. You’d be surprised how many things are changed if you actually played the demo. Even clone characters have things added to them either move-wise or attribute-wise to make them unique. And the characters that aren’t clones? You probably didn’t spend too much time on the characters page if you didn’t notice what the rest of the characters had done to them (Lucario being the prime example of how much they changed). And, iirc, the only difference between Falco and Fox in Brawl other than animations was that Falco kicked his reflector for no reason at all, making lose a very important tool he had in Melee.

    3. Even though Fox and Falco had similar animations, they’re playstyles were vastly different. This carries over in Project M. And The PMBR even left in some of Falco’s Brawl animations.

They don’t remove anything. They reverted all of the Melee “top tiers” to their former selves so they could have something to base their balance around. If they leave in Brawl changes for Falco, not only does that change his playstale but it alters his position on the tier list.

Something that the OP forgot to mention was that the mod does not require you to hack your wii. I know this can be found out by going on the website but many people will be off put thinking they will need to mod their wii.

But talking only does so much. Give it a try!

  4. They still haven’t gone over Brawl’s lack of competitiveness? I really wish Nintendo would try to put a hold onto this.

  5. I have a legal copy of Brawl, but my wii couldn’t play it, cos of the high density stuff and all( it’d did play fine first), so I downloaded the game through torrent so is it still considered legitimate?

    1. Yes, I’d say that is legal. As long as you already paid for the game, it’s fine, they got their money :p If you want your Wii to be able to read other double layered disks like Brawl, though, you should buy an official Nintendo Wii lens cleaning kit, which you can find through a Google search for it.

  6. I play brawl for brawl not for melee . Brawl is a much more polished competitive fighting fighting game when dealing with melee though you can abuse thephysics . If it wasnt for wavrdashing i would still be playing it like i used to but it just feels so broken . Brawl is way more fun for competition matches because people usually have nothing to abuse . Also tripping is in the game so it gives new players a chance if they cant combo break . It has invincibility frames andmost of the time it actually helps . So i dont see why people hate it so much you should know how to use the trip to your advantage by now

    1. Random events cannot be used to one’s advantage as they’re random. Things like that plus an unbalanced character roster (among other things) make the game undesirable for most to play competitively. What you call “abusing physics”, competitive Melee players consider it an advanced technique. Even if you don’t wavedash, that isn’t a good excuse for not playing Melee.

    2. “Brawl is a much more polished competitive fighting fighting game when dealing with melee though you can abuse thephysics.”

      Brawl? Polished competitively? XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

“If it wasnt for wavrdashing i would still be playing it like i used to but it just feels so broken”

How is Wavedashing broken? It is really hard to do and it’s useless the nearly the whole Melee cast.

“Brawl is way more fun for competition matches because people usually have nothing to abuse”

Meta Knight, just that one is needed to shake an entire community.

“Also tripping is in the game so it gives new players a chance if they cant combo break . It has invincibility frames andmost of the time it actually helps .”

No, it destroys many chances, it does not have invincibility, and does not help at all; it’s stupid.

    3. There is a lot of abuse in competitive brawl… a lot of abuse… because stupid buggy stuff like grap release combos/chaingrabs…

  7. I’ve played this and it’s quite awesome. The whole point is to make it more like Marlee in difficulty and balance

    1. It does (successfully) attempt to play like Melee, but the shine in P:M is that it actually tries to fix the balance problem. Melee was unbalanced, though not to Brawl’s point; nearly 60% of the cast was not viable at all back then. P:M aims to fix that.

  8. After reading the comments on this newspost, I can conclude that I now have severe brain damage.

The guy near the top of the page that was saying “tripping isn’t random” is so goddamn stupid (and probably <10 years old) I had to actually walk away from my computer in an effort to not smash my keyboard into a million pieces.

    1. So true man… I share your sentiment.

Melee, to me was the best one. But I never did get into the n94 one too much.
Here’s why I think melee is the best.
It had advanced techniques purposefully put there by the programmers. L canceling, short hop, fast fall, crouch cancel, edge hog etc. along with the unintentional wavedash (although I have heard otherwise.).

Then it also had items and the ability to shut them off or limit their spawn rate. Personally I like playing with items on AND off. I like both. With them on it’s more of just a chaotic mess of explosions and it gets crazy. It has the randomness that allows one to not take it so seriously.
and sill have fun, but without them it’s all about your skill with your character. Essentially, I liked it because you could SHUT OFF THE RANDOM.

So beneath the items there was this expansive metagame with advanced techniques that required practice and precision to master and use. There were stages with random elements/hazards and stages without.
You had the choice! and when you made the choice there was something left.

With brawl, all of the advanced techniques are removed. Yes Sakurai hates the competitive fighting scene. I guess you could say it’s a fluke that melee is what it is, considering Sakurai created smash as an anti thesis to competitive fighting games. But he didn’t stop there, he purposefully made the random element permanent with tripping. He slowed it down, and dumbed it down.

Your average casual gamer will complain that fox falco and wolf are the exact same, or ness and lucas, or link and toon link, without knowing that even if they actually were 1:1 clones, that a few percentages more in damage output, a few different frames of invisibility, or even a slight change in the angle that your opponent is launched can change your combo choices and the entire metagame and tier list.

It simply goes over their heads.

      1. I wholeheartedly agree 100%

I’m a TL main, and people were surprised to see him back for smash 4 because he was a ‘clone’, or not unique.

This is complete and utter tripe. His speed alone makes him a completely different character mechanic wise…… Let alone his art of camping with his far superior projectiles, spacing with zairs and aerials into quickdraws, as well as combos with bairs and utilts.

Although his moveset is essentially the same, every move is mechanically unique in multiple aspects. The amount of TL’s advanced techniques is mind boggling. Some completely useless, but awesome to watch, others can change the course of a game if perfectly executed.
