Satoru Iwata confirmed that the Wii U will support free-to-play games and microtransactions. Nintendo has designed the Wii U “to allow developers to freely take advantage of things like free-to-play and microtransactions.” Iwata reconfirmed that Nintendo doesn’t plan to offer first-party games as free-to-play titles, but they may offer free downloadable content.
“We have prepared a Digital Rights Management system. We have designed the system from a technical standpoint to allow developers to freely take advantage of things like free-to-play and microtransactions.”
“Currently, we are not actively looking at free to play for our first-party content and I don’t think that’s a direction that we should go in right now, but that doesn’t mean for the future that there may not come a time where we have specific content that might be suited to that model.”

Wow that would actually be cool as hell. I’d sit back on my couch and play this day in, day out.
My only question is how easy Nintendo is going to make it for developers to move free to play games onto the system – I wonder if they will be required to have WiiU gamepad functionality? I also wonder how they are going to test the games for their format like they do on the eshop since the games are specifically designed to take time to properlly play?

awesome news is awesome. now they can grab that gigantic croud of mmo players, seeing as almost all mmo’s now are free to play. i personally don’t play mmo’s but it is a pretty smart move to go in the direction of free to play.
MMOs would kick ass on the Upad. Take all the clutter from the TV screen and put it on the Upad.

I started with a cube, but I stoemhod it and deleted one side before I started adding any details. After that it’s just a matter of getting the few points you have where they need to be, and gradually start adding more. That’s what I’m wondering too, hopefully they will, I always thought that was a great idea from Sony & Microsoft, it’s actually helped quite a lot of people I know to decide if they should buy a full game or not.
Demos are desperately needed on both 3DS and Wii so hopefully Nintendo takes care of it next gen.

This is the right business model to attract potential game and app makers. They took a page out of Apples App store and I have a feeling it will do great. The amount of free Apps and micro transactions will allow game and app makers another source of income and statistics as to what gamers want. Also marketing will love this. :D . Great job Nintendo

Free to Play games are, as the name suggest, games that are free to play. You can then buy different looks for your character or pay to unlock new stuff faster etc. That is how the developers earn money on it. These kind of games are often updated frequently with new stuff for you to unlock/buy
