  1. THE BEST GAMES

NINTENDO HAS THE BEST EXCLUSIVES. SORRY SONY AND MICROSOFT. YOUR COOL BUT NOT THAT COOL

    BOOO YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

      1. matter of opinion but I dont.

bring on the TROLLS MY B…. MY BODY WAS READY, IS READY AND WILL ALWAYS BE READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. “bring on the trolls”?

It seems that your initial comment was bait and blatant fanboyism. All three companies have good exclusives on their respective systems.

Mind you, while the majority of those games on that list are Nintendo exclusives, a good handful of them are not.

        1. Well, Sony started having a good number of exclusives just this generation. They always had a few, but they’re just getting close to Nintendo now.

          1. I alway thought they had good exclusive from ps2. Metal gear amd Ratchet and Clank are a couple of my favorite franchises.
They do have alot more exclusives. Id say Sony satisfies my more “mature” needs, along with amazing stories.

            1. Well, Metal Gear is a third-party, and most of those ended up coming out in another platform sooner or later.

I’m not saying that their exclusives weren’t good before, but, until this gen, Nintendo was absolute exclusive king, while now Sony is in a really good second spot.

              1. Its third party now, but 4 is still an exclusive only. Hope Kojima makes 5 for WiiU, so much he could do with the game pad

                1. I don’t mind Sony too much, but I agree with you about Microsoft. They seem to be faster than Sony nowadays in stealing ideas.

          1. Halo is pretty good, and Gears is okay. Thats it. I dont count Splinter Cell because it was typically bought out by Microsoft

            1. darn i wish Forza or GT could come to Nintendo. This “Project Cars” is my only hope, but I’m not sure the NFS developers would give us a Forza/GT type game. Theres only a few NFS games I really liked, but they are way different to the seriousness of Forza/GT. I’ve got to find out more about it.

            2. And it so Sad they Have Rare wich did so much for Nintendo I think MS bought them to keep Nintendo down, but Now they have Retro.

              1. Well look what Microsoft has got out of Rare. Kinect Sports? Nuts and Bolts? That’s nothing. They’ve only encouraged Nintendo to push development with more studios.

        1. Jak, Ratchet & Clank, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Little Big Planet, The Last Guardian, the Last of Us, Uncharted, Starhawk, etc…

  2. Mario Galaxy 2 should also be listed as one of the “Must-Haves.” If you own neither one, you might as well get the second one..

      1. I disagree. There’s not much to learn with Galaxy at all…the controls make perfect sense. One could easily do without the first game.

        1. Mario Galaxy 2 was just an expansion on the first game so how is it a new game or even a sequel? All it has is a new map system, yoshi and new maps and thats it. Still the same game.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 will always be better

          1. Because it has more than enough content and new ideas NOT in the first game to have it be considered a full sequel? It has a new map system, which in these games works a lot better, Yoshi, which goes with the “new content” and new levels, again “new content.” And unless you hated the first game, I don’t see how it being very similar is a bad thing. “Yeah, the first game is awesome, but the second game is the same but better in this way, and that way, oh, and in this way too because of more content…but the first one is better!” Dafuq?

          2. Besides which, what about New Super Mario Bros. Wii? It’s not even a sequel to the one on the DS (that’s coming in August for 3DS), yet it is INCREDIBLY derivative. That one plays it safe, just adds new levels and multiplayer. But there really is nothing new about New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Why is it no one complains about that game being too similar? It’s more similar to NSMB DS than SMG 2 is to its predecessor. Your claims are unbelievably exaggerated.

            1. At this point you kind of expect Mario games to be similar. It’d be nice if Nintendo made a new groundbreaking Mario game akin to Mario 64, but the games are still just as fun now as they were when the original NES classic helped Nintendo become what it is today.

      1. That’s because you played the first Galaxy, therefore, it’s a rather personal complaint. What if someone never played the first one and doesn’t have that nostalgia? Therefore, Galaxy 2 would be a MUCH better experience because they’re getting a game that improved upon the shortcomings of the first game.

        1. True, but who bought 2 without buying one?!
2 was still fantastic, was alot harder, and they cut out all the dialogue and hub, because most people didnt wana go through that again.
Only bad thing about it, they changed Bowsers battle theme for Galaxy. When i first heard that music, i came

          1. The people that assume Mario has a story, that’s who.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The music in Galaxy just wasn’t a right fit for Mario games anyways. Glad they toned down the bombastic tunes in Galaxy 2, it has more of a Mario charm that way. If only they could get Koji Kondo involved again and stop hiring other composers to do all the work.

            1. No way, i loved the soundtrack in Galaxy, and in 2. Fit well in my opinion, made it that much more epic

              1. Right, but “Epic” as in “Hollywood theatrics” is not a good fit for Mario. A lot of the Galaxy 2 tracks to me didn’t fit well either, but they were better to me because the “epic”ness was toned down a lot. Not to mention, the soundtrack felt much more original. I could help but feel like the tracks in the first game lacked originality, they just felt too generic. This is why I wish Koji Kondo was still a major composer in the games, not some guy that just composes the hub theme and two other tracks for a couple levels.

                1. I meant epic as in the grand scaleseeing as your in space. Besides,it wasntall big orchestral tracks, remember the bee levelsmusic? Very chilled out.

                  1. Yes, but it was very generic, it lacked creativity. It just felt like they were trying too hard to take advantage of the fact that they have an orchestra, and the fans were easily pleased by it.

Indeed, not all the tracks were loud bombastic non-Mario tracks, but they still lacked a sort of creativity, such as Beach Bowl Galaxy in comparison to Galaxy 2’s Starshine Beach. I feel like people just want the loud bombastic tracks and don’t really appreciate creativity, therefore favor Galaxy 1’s soundtrack.

Galaxy 2 also had tracks such as Yoshi Star Galaxy (which happens to be composed by Koji Kondo himself, which is why it sounds a lot like Yoshi’s Island music), Puzzle Plank Galaxy, Fluffy Bluff/Cloudy Court Galaxy, etc, each were much more distinct in character and felt more Mario-like.

            2. Wasn’t fit in a Mario game? Well, that’s your personal opinion. Most people agree that Super Mario Galaxy has the best soundtrack in a Mario game ever.

              1. That’s because “most people” hate creativity and just like the soundtrack because it has an orchestra. :)

I guarantee you nobody would like it had it not been orchestrated. Orchestrated music doesn’t make the music any better, it just makes it orchestrated. What matters is memorable and creative music, and Galaxy 1 really doesn’t have that. Galaxy 2 doesn’t necessarily either, but a little more so than Galaxy 1. I think the reason why people prefer the Galaxy 1 soundtrack is because the whole “orchestral music” novelty wore off, so now they’re actually listening to the music and realizing it’s not so good, but defend the soundtrack in the first game due to nostalgia. ;)

  3. …Klonoa.
    I can’t believe I’ve forgotten that game.

Klonoa is such a fun series.

But that “must-have” list is pretty accurate, imo.

        1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii was okay. It was better on DS though. The Wii version just seems to lack something that would make it really fun..it just feels like a very generic platformer. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s not “awesome.”

          1. i liked the Wii better. but probably cuz i have a lot of brothers and sisters (6 in total :D ), and so i never played it alone!

        1. Yeah. Im mean i own a ps3 so its okay but i how it get release on the wiiu store, maybe use te pad for the brush

    1. They also forgot Monster Hunter Tri. I mean come on man, one of the best online experiences on the Wii, and you still don’t put it on the list. this is the stuff that Capcom uses to make them believe they should NOT localize Monster Hunter games.

      1. ^ This.

New Super Mario Bros. on DS was very good, better than its Wii version…but even that doesn’t compare to the 3D Marios, which sadly are far less successful…

        1. What i personally want next from Mario? An open world in the whole Mushroom Kingdom, like merging all the levels to this one huge level. Just this huge landspace that you have free reign over, picking up stars along the way, and then having it change when enough star are gotten. Warp pipes for easy traversal too. Make it happen Nintendo!!

          1. That would be fun. They could also do maybe a 3D Mario game based off Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). Personally, I just want a 3D Mario kind of like Mario 64/Sunshine where you go find Stars (or whatever the objects may be) in mission-based levels with a nice free-roaming hub with lots of secret levels and secret “collectable-objects”. None of this linear stuff anymore!

    1. I was lucky enough to get it in time, and STILL have it :) I like the fact that Prime Trilogy is a “Must-Have” while Other M is a “Nice-To-Have” >:)

      1. Lesson learned, dont troll.
Unless youre that guy who says “what is the wiiu? Is it a controller for the wii?” on every post, because hes kinda funny

        1. He’s got other troll sentences lined up which are even funnier.
“What is Smartglass? Is it a tablet for the Xbox?”

    1. Yeah and specially Sin & Punishment 2 it’s 1000x times better than most games in the ” Should” list.

  4. Geometry Wars: Galaxies was a gem. It should have been mentioned. I’m also glad Super Mario Galaxy is above the 2nd one, also I would’ve put it on the Nice-To-Haves. Let’s face it, it was a $50 expansion pack.

    1. But, there was WELL more than enough content in it to call it a whole new game. I don’t understand what’s wrong with the second game. It’s the same, except improves on all the shortcomings of the first, like difficulty, making it a MUCH more enjoyable experience, and cutting out all the crap like unnecessary story lines to just give you a nice game.

    2. Geometry Wars is actually a really fun game, I approve of the first line of your comment.
The second line, however, I disapprove of greatly. According to your logic, almost every single sequel in existence is an expansion…

  5. Soon to be more essentials when they bring out the new controller add on called wii u, that makes the games hd. It also adds another screen.

              1. I could bother going through older posts of yours, but from recent memory, I remember you being very anxious to get people banned.

        1. first people i am the original 1.the real peteriuss is ME with the red gravatar.second.mactavish its time for u to “go”

          1. Accusing someone who hasnt been on this site in months pisses me off, though that Other M reference was nice, so ill forgive it.

  6. I’ve played 8 of the must haves. what the hell is little king’s story. someone explain it to me please.

    1. Wow, i remember hearing about that game in the Wii’s launch in a magazine.
From what i remember, its like a 3rd person rpg/sim city, where you build your own kingdom

    2. Think of Little King’s Story like Pikmin, but you control your subjects instead of aliens, and it is set out a lot like an action RPG/strategy game. It is very good BTW, and very cheap now.

  7. Where is the Trauma Series, Muramasa, Rune Factory Tides of Destiny, Monster Hunter 3, Fire Emblem, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, Lost in Shadow and The Skycrawlers Inoccent Aces games? Epic fail!

    1. Keep in mind Last Story and Pandoras Tower hadn;t come out in America at the time this was made. However, the lack of Muramasa and Trauma Centre is very bad…

    2. Trauma xD shooting super biruses with a laser, whut. i hope they bring it back on WiiU, would work perfect with the pad.

            1. It wasnt the difficulty, it was more the lack of precision, making stiches in particular was annoying. Hope they bring it back for wiiu, would be a day 1 purchase for me

              1. Even so, I found the game difficult, especially Second Opinion. In fact, Most of the Atlus games were difficult, Baroque, Shiren the Wanderer and so on.

    1. Metroid Prime Trilogy is a compilation of the three Metroid Prime games, Metroid Prime, Metriod Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. All three are fantasic games, and if you see it anywhere, for any price, pick it up straight away!

      1. Cant wait for Metroid on the WiiU. Prime was such a good series, and graphically outstanding, so imagining it on WiiU blows my mind.

  8. The Wii has a decent list of games, and a treasure trove of downloable classics. There are enough games to keep you occupied for a long time, but the list of good Wii games compared to a list for the Xbox360 or PS3 is tiny, and don’t go and say “xbox & ps is all shooters”, when they aren’t. There are so much more for them than shooters, and even then I do enjoy games like Halo, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead, Bioshock, etc. They’re just great games, even if they are shooters. This is why people say “Oh, dur dur dur, Wii has no games”, because there really isn’t as big a quantity of quality games, not to say Super Mario Galaxy or DKCR aren’t quality though. It’s all opinion though, and I enjoy my Wii a lot and is definitely worth the $100 it’s going for now. Oh, and Chrono Trigger missing from the VC list is depressing. Best game of all time.

  9. Looking at this and all the comments it really is kind of a nice look back and farewell for the Wii :/ bitter sweet, the WiiU will do you proud!

  10. That’s a very good list. I missed the Wii, so when I buy my Wii U, I’m definitely going to have to pick up some of these games. Starting with Skyward Sword. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. Its funny (sad) how Prime for the Cube got a 4/5 from Xplay because you had to stop to look up and stuff… then when Corruption for Wii comes out and fixes the ‘problem’, they give IT a 4/5. WHY.

But yeah, if you get Corruption or the Trilogy, you won’t regret it- shouldn’t go for more than $30 (Corruption, I mean).

  11. That’s pretty accurate, though im surprised Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn wasnt on there at all… at least Brawl is considered a must-have.

Notice there arent any M games as must-haves

  12. For me that list is missing games like: Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Trauma Team, Okami and I would put Red Steel 2 in ‘Nice to Have’, and of course Resident Evil 4, the Wii Edition is the best!

  13. let me put something out there i hope that tasanuko vs capcom 2 comes xclusively to the wiiu i love that game and its way better than marvel vs capcom 3

      1. For no other reason other than to have an exclusive fighter for the Wii-U. I mean, Nintendo systems have missed out on Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs Capcom, Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc. Personally, I could care less for the game being exclusive to the Wii-U, but it would help in giving the system some nice exclusives.

        1. The main reason the Wii missed out on those titles was due to hardware limitations. The Wii U will be more capable thus more titles will be multiplatform.

Nintendo has many third-party exclusives though.

          1. But, the thing is, it wasn’t just with the Wii. I don’t remember there being a Tekken or a Street Fighter or a Marvel vs Capcom or a lot of other games on the GameCube or the N64 and, honestly, there was NO reason not to.

    1. I respect your opinion about that game…but am I the only one who thinks that Tatsunoko v Capcom was like the most shallow fighting game ever? I played it for about a half hour and thought it was one of the worst games I have ever played in my life…just sayin…

    1. Oh my…you’re right! Very underrated, all the TTYD fans hate it, but it’s still a great game, even if it was different. Once you can accept that, it’s a very good game.

      1. TTYD may be my favorite PM game, but Super Paper Mario was fantastic and very much underrated. By far the best story and writing in the series and the gameplay was fun.

My only problem was the lack of character with the partners/pixls.

  14. eh, Tatsunoko vs Capcom is fun for a while but gets boring when you get good at it. The character balance is fucking nuts in this game. Online being horrible doesn’t help either. It was nice seeing some underrated Capcom characters like Batsu and Soki again though.

Glad to see Zack & Wiki on here, insanely underrated and underplayed. It probably would’ve done better as a handheld title though.

    1. “Anonymous Firstly, I’m glad Tatsunoko vs Capcom made the list. It’s a very good fighter and in ways better than MvC3 in my opinion. I see what you mean about it getting boring when you get good at it but playing online keeps the game fun for me. But what I dislike is the wiimote/nunchuck users >.<

  15. I don’t know why you’re posting this now since NP revealed this about a month ago… anyway, this is a really great list, except I don’t think Bully should be there. I’m not saying it’s bad, but there are other great wii games like No More Heroes 2 and Monster Hunter Tri.

  16. Um, hello Nintendo Power? Where’s Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn? That’s a Nice-to-Have at MINIMUM!

I mean, you even gave it a 9.5 out of 10!

  17. Take Super Mario Galaxy 2 out of ‘The Should Haves’ and put it in a section titled ‘Every Home Should Have’ and I’d agree 100%.

  18. Pingback: Must Have Wii Games - Neko Zeppelin

  19. This is a great list. I own most of them. And yes, they’re essential. Love how all four of Retro’s games made the list.

  20. I’ve pretty much played every Wii game of interest but the only ones I am keeping with my Wii U are:

    * Monster Hunter Tri
    * The Last Story
    * Xenoblade Chronicles
    * Skyward Sword
    * Twilight Princess

    Everything else will be sold.

        1. No I have not, sickr ban this guy for calling me ass hole. You have warned this gentleman before for racism, in a recent post he says god bless hitler.

          1. when sickr sent me the email i stopped the racism languege but i asked him to WARN U that u must mind ur own business.IS THAT CLEAR FACTAVISH? mind ur own business or ill send email to sickr and ur finished for good!

    1. Oh i see, it must be opposite day! Yeah the 360 is great, better graphics than anything and it NEVER breaks or was intentionally a broken console.

      1. No. It’s not opposite day… Which means it is… WAIT! SO IT ISN’T!

        I’m confused n- wait a second.

  21. I have-

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
    Mario Kart Wii
    Metroid Prime Trilogy
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    Xenoblade Chronicles

    Bully: Scholarship Edition
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Gamecube and Wii versions)
    Super Mario Galaxy 2

    Disney’s Epic Mickey
    GoldenEye 007
The House of the Dead: Overkill
    MadWorld
    Metroid: Other M
    Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

    Final Fantasy III
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    The Revenge of Shinobi
    Super Mario World
    Super Metroid

  23. This list is an embarresment smh xbox has like 10 times the number of number 1 must have lol this list is like some inside joke.shovelware r fun -_-

      1. Now let’s list their exclusives

        Halo maybe…
        ….
        ….
        Gears of War…

        Kinect…

Yeah the 360 definitely has the best first party games and exclusives. Sony and Nintendo have a lot to be jealous about.

  24. @nooblet actually halo started on pc earlier thanmetriod and besides doom was before metro prime. Btw id rather metro return to 2d i hate 3d.

    1. And Metroid started on NES earlier than Halo. Halo 4, though, shares an uncanny resemblence to Metroid Prime – unlike other Halo games. Your argument that a series started before a certain game was released can be turned against you as well.

  25. Rayman Origins as a The Must-Haves LOL what a joke, that game is made by shitty French people.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as a The Should-Haves LOL that game was shit.

Disney’s Epic Mickey as a The Nice-To-Haves LOL that game was boring as hell.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword as The Must-Haves LOL that game was OK but nothing special.

The list that Nintendo Power made is pure fucking crap, just like the magazine itself.

      1. Skyward Sword was OK but the backtracking and the fact you only go to same 3 places on the map killed it for me.

        1. Everyone has a different preference and a different opinion. For me, I actually didn’t mind the back-tracking, mostly because I’m so used to Metroid’s backtracking, and I actually enjoyed it because you can explore new areas in the 3 old areas or get things you were previously incapable of doing.

    1. Rayman Origins is one of the best platformers i’ve ever played, and your insulting racist remark makes me want to club you to death.

      1. Rayman Origins is one of the worse platformers i’ve ever played,

        And insulting racist remark?

        LOL

How can I be racist toward the frogs? .

Fuck the French and their right wing country.

    1. Oh my gods you are right.

Also no Majora’s Mask in the Virtual Console Essentials?

Fuck you Nintendo Power and your shitty magazine.

  26. No real complaints with this list though I haven’t thought too much about it. Only thing I’ll say is getting Metroid Trilogy isn’t an easy task unless you break $60 so maybe it should be in the must haves for that but whatever; I get it

  27. I would put The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Must-Haves list but oh well it’s there decision.

    1. Twilight Princess was a shit Zelda game.

It’s also a Game Cube game so it really shouldn’t be on the list.

  29. It’s really funny to see SMG as a Must have (it certainly isn’t since SMG2 came out it has become a “should have” at best, since there’s almost nothing to do in it compared to the sequel (It’s a “when Mario becomes casual” game, that’s why i never bought it and I never will) SMG 2 is the “must have”). Overall I disagree about many “must have” games anyway (Little King story WTF?), but most (not all) games in that list are indeed nice to have.
However there’s one game that is a absolute Must have but isn’t in the list : Okami.
Several others are missing, but it becomes a matter of taste.

    1. And it’s not only Little king’s story or SMG that are f**** up, Rayman Origins and DKCR as “must have” makes me wonder if they’re trolling or not
