Tekken Dev Says Two Screens For Wii U ‘Can Be Distracting’

Tekken series boss Katsuhiro Harada believes that using two screens in a fighting game can be immensely distracting. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is coming out on Wii U later this year, but it’s likely that it won’t use the second screen for complicated manoeuvres.

“Looking at the small screen and the big screen at the same time is pretty distracting for a fighting game. So we’re thinking of making it useful as a way of having shortcuts.

“Or, by making progressing through the game more convenient. Or by playing alone on the GamePad screen.”

      1. exactly, how does that make any sense since they made a game for the 3ds which has 2 screens and never said anything about that

        1. Yeah but both screens are connected to each other, so they’re both within visual. But the WiiU gamepad isn’t connected to your tv screen.

  1. DUH! You’re not supposed to put the buttons on the touch-screen. Just put some combos on the screen, in case you forget how to do a combo, and you can quickly throw a look at it, without pausing the game, that’s it, nothing more needed on the 2nd screen. Even though the controller is the main focus, it’s still a feature, you don’t have to ALWAYS use the 2nd screen.

    1. I think that the gamepad screen would work well as the menu and then when actually in fights, just using buttons and looking at the TV screen. Then if you need to check the command list, you can pause, scroll though with the touch-screen etc.

    2. nope, if they put entire combos with a touch of the screen it would ruin it. but if they put a list of combos on the screen or used it for some sort of special meter like the ones in mvc3 or mortal kombat 9, than it would be useful just to tap it rather than some button combination.

      1. I like the idea of having the combos listed on the second screen, but during a fast paced game like this you won’t have the time to look at the screen .

        1. well, let me clarify. i think it would be better if they popped up on the controller screen when the game is paused rather than on the tv because, if you’re playing locally, you can look at your combos without your friend getting an idea as to what combo you are trying to do so that they cant figure out how to counter it.

            1. i hope they dont go the way of marvel vs capcom 3 on the vita and just let you tap the screen to fight, that would suck lol

  2. I don’t really mind whether it utilizes the second screen much or not, I just can’t wait for a Tekken game on a Nintendo home console.

    1. Precisely, this is one game that will actually benefit from just using the Pro Controller or Off-TV Play.

  3. makes sense. fighting games are action packed, so you won’t want to deal with that 2nd screen while fighting. actually, i would think that pro controller would be good for a fighting game.

  4. Misleading title is misleading -_- I seriously though that this was going to e about some guy complaining about the Wii U’s second screen distracting and ruining a game rather then enhancing it. But instead it a guy making valid points.

  5. I don’t blame him.
Sometimes gimmicks don’t work in some games or genres. The only thing I could think of is the tablet screen showing either the characters in batles realationship as a extra feature or movelist.

      1. But it is kinda a gimmick. its something specific to that console that changes gameplay of the games. A lot of people seem to think that if someone calls something a gimmick, they are dissing the console. 009soulmaster made a legitimate point that the touch screen wouldn’t really work for a super fast paced fighting game and you took it the wrong way because he called it a gimmick

      2. It is a gimmick actually, just a different form of a gimmick.

The denotative definition of a gimmick is the main selling point of a….whatever, that is used to sell the….whatever, but is actually not used as much.

The second screen will probably be used quite a bit… so it’s got that.

        1. Ps1 cd player ps2 and xbox dvd and ps3 blu ray those are gimmicks the gamepad can actually enhance the game if done right

  6. I’m glad that devs aren’t forcing themselves to figure out ways to Use the second screen. This means well get a good old fashioned games with a normal control scheme. And it also means they are going for the best quality possible for the gameplay!

  7. there is good and bad

bad: if you look from the second screen after you look back on the t.v your character is already beaten up

good: second screen for shortcut combo this is good for people who are good in multitasking

  8. The touch screen use on the 3DS Street Fighter was great. Essentially a moves list and one-button special moves. I would be fine with something like that on the big screen fighting games.

  9. During the fight, Yeah, it doesn’t really seem to be objective that much. But on the menus and doing other things, the 2nd screen can be super useful.

But the only way to clearly see how well a 2nd screen is implemented in a fighting game for the Wii U, devs should wait for the SSB4 to come out. I think Nintendo has something in the bag for us. :p

      1. Maybe only Wii U. But if the SSB for 3DS is cool, I might get it as well. The problem is, I don’t have that much money so I’ll only get for the Wii U. xD

I’ll use my money on mostly Wii U games this next year. Giving my other consoles a rest. :p

  10. When I first saw the title, I was like “you fools, you don’t have to incorporate into the gameplay, just use it for extra stuff, don’t ruin your game!!!”. Then I saw the rest what they said, and I thought to myself “good job guys. Wii U has smart developers on it”.

  11. I don’t think anybody’s expecting a fighting game to use the 2nd screen so much. Just make a traditional Tekken game. That would be good enough for me. Leave luck to heaven.

  12. Over the shoulder view, first person view, assigned move list shortcut buttons. It shouldn’t be that hard to add something to the 2nd screen and it doesn’t even have to be gimmicky.

  13. Makes sense. For a fighting game like Tekken or Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, you wouldn’t exactly want to divert your attention. Personally, I don’t want developers to try and force themselves to use the touch-screen.

  15. He said it was distracting, but named off a list of other things you can do with the unique controler. So it wont take anything away from the game at all.

  16. So this Tekken will be a Dump, News at Eleven.

Jeez. everyday who happen this game make me less and less to be bought for the Wii U, at least will save the money for either Rayman or P-100
