EA Says Single Player Dead Space Games Were Too Scary

EA Games marketing boss Laura Miele has said that the firm found out via product research that the Dead Space games were too scary for consumers. Miele says to amend this they’ve added cooperative gameplay, so you don’t have to face the horror alone.

“We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers.”

“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.”

“The horror of Dead Space is still all there. It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own.”

“Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”

    1. For a indie game, yes. But the actual numbers are a fraction of Dead Space sales – which aren’t *that* much to begin with – and a fraction of a fraction of the first Resident Evil ones. Do some research on vgchartz.com and other sources.

Fact is, the bigger audience – and even some ‘middle’ ones – don’t want to be *really* scared by games.

      1. I suppose, but VGchartz is never a good indicator for many factors. The issue I have seen that most have with dead space is that it is either mostly jump scares which people get irritated by (Jump scares are very different to true horror) and that having a gun removes you from the horror often. Some people think that for a true horror game you shouldn’t have weapons.

That isn’t to say dead space is bad, but rather that maybe they are milking the series too much at this point too quickly (One game every 3 – 4 years is a good formula) and that Horror and FPS have never been really great, unless you use jump scares (even then they get tiresome). Who knows XD.

  1. Dead Space is the least scary horror game I’ve played to date. If these people think THIS game is scary, they’ll die of a heart attack if they play Silent Hill.

    1. It’s pretty scary to some people. Not everyone is the same. The atmosphere is amazing and incredibly tense. That’s what I’ve loved about the Dead Space series.

  2. really? is this game good? and scary? n_n i been looking for another game like dementium 2 scary but not to depressing, fun and existing like cod zombie!!! with the help of a friend this game is actually fun!! should i get this game? :/

    1. Its a damn good game and is moderately scary, its more of that “oh shit, im out of ammo run away” scary, but that depends on what difficulty your on

    2. It’s more jump-scary then true scary but still has great gameplay and is pretty tense on higher difficulty where you have less ammo, health and the enemies are extremely overpowered. I do recommend both games but they’re not for the faint of heart, especially the (MINOR SPOILER) eye-drill sequence in the second game

    3. But yes, buy it, its lots of fun, although buy 1 and 2 first, definitely one of the highlights of this gen in my opinion.

      1. i will, but is this game on a Nintendo console? or wii u? should i borrow my cousin’s PlayStation 3? :/

            1. You should definitely invest in Dead Space 1 & 2. Definitely scary to some people, and the atmosphere is incredible and tense. Great gameplay, graphics, and tons of replayability. There is one on the Wii, but it’s an on-rails shooter, and I’ve heard it sucks compared to the main series.

            2. AAAAuuuugh, no, no, no! I see this far too man times. PLAY IT ON PC. GET IT ON STEAM. There was a sale for it just a couple days ago where you could get Dead Space 1 and 2 for like $7.49… It’s likely to come back since the summer sale isn’t over. Why do so many people think consoles are the only option? I have *always* been a PC gamer and a Nintendo gamer, for the sole reason that 95% of PS3 and 360 games are ports that are also on PC, and because Nintendo has all the amazing first party exclusives. As much as console fans want to argue, as long as you don’t have a terrible computer, the PC is always better than playing on 360 or PS3. And Steam is the best way to do it.

              1. Because not everyone likes to play with a mouse and keyboard. not everyone has the same preferanceyyou know. deal with it.

                1. you can get USB controllers for the PC.. It’s not expensive. Hell, you can even get adapters to use real controllers (e.g. Gamecube and Dreamcast) on the PC.

                2. Uh… Yeah I use my 360 controller with my PC for almost ever game. I have 2 360 controllers and haven’t ever owned a 360. lol. There are many thousands upon thousands of options for controllers on pc. I’ve even written a few scripts for PC games that let me use my Wiimote to play. It’s not that hard :/

                1. Then what is he typing his comments on? I highly doubt he’s using his Wii’s browser. lol :) I’m not sure where you’re from, but everyone I know has a pc.

  3. Really? I’m dissapointed in people. Pussies.

Still, I take solace in hoping I can still play single player, even if coop is offered. :D

  4. No they werent? They werent scary enough in my opinion. I was more scared playing Bioshock, but that made it all the more memorable

  5. Yeah I would never play dead space alone… I would only play it with a friend watching me play, or vice versa.

  6. Peteriuss,Aeolus and Icy Dead had gay butt sex.

Horror games don’t scare me in my opinion they aren’t scary at all.

    1. Try playing SCP: Containment Breach(It’s free) or Amnesia. I didn’t think games could scare me until I played these.

  7. The thing is really like about the co-op in DS3 is that the single doesnt have a dumb ass CPU when teyre no second player like Resident Evil 5, BUT, that being said, fuck EA for not having local Co-op :|

  8. When I saw the footage for Dead Space 3, I couldn’t help fear that all the fear would be watered down thanks to the co-op, and now my instincts prove correct. Everyone loved Dead Space because it was scary, and now it will be just another 3rd-person shooter. Games need to have an edge to stick out in this era, and EA has just rounded all the corners.

  9. A fucking joke. They just want to turn it into an action game like resident evil…..

Hence why I’m not buying either. I don’t buy horror games that aren’t scary…..

  10. *epic fucking facepalm*

Thanks, EA! Now I know that the scary game I bought because it was fun being scared won’t scare me so much anymore and I can actually beat the game without having to change my underwear now. Yay!

Solution, my cousin wanted to play co-op with me and now I’m just going to tell him no.

And yes, Dead Space 1&2 are better than all of the Resident Evil games because of their superior premise and atmospehere. That being said, I still love Resident Evil 1 remake for the Gamecube along with Code Veronica.

  11. wha-? that was the point! make the game as scary as possible…
though it was not that scary, but very satisfying.. cutting off limbs, storyline.. it’s good.. but adding coop to this game, is just… ruining the game..

  12. Oh ye above that are dancing around the obvious. The Wii U is here and they Know the fact that you have two WiiHD touch control pads will promote local co-op. Sony and Microsoft should really begin to shiver now. The Wii U shall dominate online and local co-op even without trying :).

  13. What? No they weren’t. I wanted the games to be scary but Dead Space 2 had just one part that only made me jump at best. A hoard of alien zombies coming after you in predictable waves is not scary.

  14. Hang On…

Dead Space is meant to be Scary?

If your under attack and can immediately take both legs off said attacker, that’s not a Horror game…

    Now Amnesia…

  15. How is it we miss out on this market research that keeps being carried out? And I’m pretty sure a game involving scares is meant to be scary.

But let me get this straight: If I play single player, it’ll be the same game but no ingame partner?

  16. Thats some serious BS. Its a survival horror, EA. If people think its scary, then its doing its job well.

  17. So… they’re going to make a horror game less scary? They didn’t outright say it, but it looks like DS3 is more like other shooters than a horror game which is unfortunate.

  18. they’re using suh a pathetic nonsense lie as an excuse to add co-op to the game. just like capcom did with re5 and on. tsk tsk tsk. co-op is ok for other game modes, but the main campaign needs to be left for a one person journey. I’m speaking of horror survival games of course.

  19. i liked the parts that made me jump, i dont easily scare at all but i still think if they tamper too much with the formula they will ruin the game. if ea really wanted to scare me though they should just come round my house and release some massive spiders. the game was enjoyable for the isolated experience so i am certainly a little dubious of this co-op gameplay.
