Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo 3DS XL will feature a better anti-glare screen due to a drop in manufacturing costs. Nintendo says that the cost of anti-reflectivity coats were too high to apply them in the past, but now they’ve reached the point where the manufacturing process and cost balance make them possible to use.

Is it just me, or is the 3DS XL much more of an improvement to the 3DS than the DSi XL was to the DSi? All they did with the DSi XL was increase the size.
It definitely is compared to the DSi XL.
The DSi XL did have some free DSiware games that the regular DSi didn’t have, the Brain Age Express Math and Brain Age Express Arts and Letters. Was hoping for some free software or points with the new 3DS XL
But less glare is sweet enough for me plus no more screen scratching worries and a slight battery improvement.
Just how much are they spending to make these things? 1k, 2K, 10k?? it sounds like they’re avoiding spending too much when it comes to console development.
also… will they even have this for Wii U too?
i doubt they would need to go above and beyond with anti-glare on the wiiu considering its meant to be played indoors….

The costs are not calculated for the developtment, but for the materials of the console / the console itself…
Just so long as we also have anti-glare screens on the normal 3DS soon. Just as an add-on would be nice.

what I really hope is that the sound quality is drastically improved cause the 3ds’s volume is shockingly bad even on max.
Agreed, I don’t think they have changed the speakers, just the holes for the sound to come out. If I want to hear the sound, I use decent headphones… It’s amazing how much sound is lost in those tiny speakers!

Nintendo have made the right move and decision in creating an improvment to the 3DS. First, they made the 3DS XL 90% larger than the original. And now, the 3DS XL will have an anti-glare screen… especially when you’re playing the portable console outdoors. I’m completely sold! After a one month release, I’m purchasing the 3DS XL on my birthday.

so its use for outside…kind of cool.

I hope they fix the problem where you see a little bit of the left image through your right eye and vice-versa in high contrast images on the screen.
Realistically, that would be hard to fix. Take a book or your hand and place it right in front of your nose. Theoretically, that’s what’s happening when contrast is that high (or the other way around, staring at an object at the end of your sight range).
The 3DS mimics true 3D by sending a different image to each eye. The only way to fix this is by avoiding this kind of high contrast during software development or somehow change the behavior of the human eye.

My question now is, does the XL solve the problem the original 3DS had where, after being closed enough times, the top screen started getting marks on it from the borders of the bottom screen?
If that’s solved, then I’m sold, and I’ll be saving up for one of these in the future.
