Mark Rein, the VP of Unreal Engine 4 studio Epic Games, says that next generation console visuals will be the graphical equivalent of Adam West’s Batman to Christian Bale’s Dark Knight Rises. Rein says that once you’ve succumb to next generation visuals it’s extremely difficult to go back to current generation games.
“Pushing the visuals will always be important. Humans evolve very slowly (over millions of years) but their tastes evolve at exponentially faster rates. This is true for pretty much all forms of entertainment and media.”
“During my own brief lifetime thus far I’ve gone from watching the Adam West Batman shows of the ‘60s to watching Christian Bale’s Dark Knight today. It’s hard to go back to watch the older series, and people generally don’t.”

Back to the OT, I highly doubt the graphical leap will be that significant, honestly.
it will be noticeable, but it wont be dramatic. i mean when i play a game on my pc in comparison to the 360, you can really tell that the textures models, and overall gameplay is a lot smoother, but not to an extent that you cant tell that they are the same game. if anything, i would rather have the console manufacturers, and game developers to focus more on actually designing the games so that they can actually run well, rather than the graphics. being able to run a game at a constant 60fps makes a huge difference over a consoles constantly frame rate dropping from 30 fps and lower.

well, some wii u games, like assassins creed 3, have been said to run at 1080p at 60fps, but im not even talking about resolution here, im just saying they need to make all of there games run at a smooth 60 fps, and the worst part is, tvs have a faster refresh rate than computer monitors, so you’d definitely be able to tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps on a tv.
No, ACIII is 30fps as discovered by digital foundry, not to mention there has been no mention of it running at 60 FPS from Ubisoft themselves.
These games are not exactly fast or cheap to develop at such a resolution AND FPS, and I’m almost certain such a thing won’t be standard for the forseeable future. Maybe the generation after. But I expect to see 720p @60fps OR, 1080p at 30fps as the usual from next-gen games.
Also, a more expensive and better quality TV would beg to differ with that last bit.

The main difference between the two is that Adam West’s Batman was in a show that was bright and colourful, whereas The Dark Knight is all about being dark and gritty.
Given Epic’s love all of all things grey, it certainly makes sense that they’d focus on something like this instead of actual visual improvement, given that making things darker isn’t enough of a leap.

And let’s analyze something, even when The Dark Knight looks awesome and has a really cool story but Adam West had the only series that focused in the original comic, with the “POWS” and “OUCHS” and the battles againts all the original enemies even the batmobile made of cardoboard looked like the one in the comic. So to conclude, you can have the best graphics you want, but there will always be needed the essence that we inherited by the first generations
I don’t think it’s going to be a GIGANTIC leap but it will be a good leap. We’ve already seen the wii u produce real time graphics that look close to CGI at 1080p 60fps with the Zelda tech demo and that wasn’t even the final build of the wii u. It’s definitely better than what’s on current consoles right now. However I don’t think the next gen systems from other companies will be a huge leap over the wii u. Environments will probably have more details and all but it won’t be a huge difference.
You have to remember though, even if the WiiU is weaker, we’re talking about Nintendo, and its development team, and people like Retro, working on a GPU from 2080-2010. Im not even prepared for what they’ll showed.

Yeah the GPU is a powerhouse but the CPU is kinda on the weak side in fact it’s actually slightly weaker than the PS3 and 360. It may not run next gen games as well but the GPU should help pick up some slack for how weak the CPU is.

I doubt it. If the 720/PS4 use top-of-the-range components, they’ll only be about 5 times more powerful than the Wii U and if they do use those components (I’m talking about an NVidea GTX 680/690 or equiv), then the price of the consoles will be through the roof (a GTX 690 alone costs £800+).
It wouldn’t supprice me if Sony made that misstake though. They have lately (since PS3) power whored at the cost of affordableness.

I am a Batman fan. I will watch anything Batman…including the old tv show (yes the tv show was corny but I watch it and enjoy it for what it is). I am a video game fan….I will play any video game, regardless of graphics, that I think is fun.

When I think “graphics” it really just means art style to me. for example, when I play super mario bros. I dont really see it as a down grade in graphics, but rather a change in the games art style. This is why I find the graphics race to be overrated. Also I dont believe for a second that a normal human being could ever tell the difference.

Um I have invested more then $7000 in the past 8 years for my pc, since last gen been playing every game at the highest settings no sweat, I found it quite easy to play games on my wii/console. I even finish OoT and link to the past at least 3 times a year to this day.

The graphical jump HAS to get smaller and smaller, you literally can’t get better looking that real-life, so the closer we get to it the smaller the jumps become. Right now we’re not there yet, but we’re not exactly far off, maybe 3-4 generations down the line it will be very easily like that.

I. Highly, Fucking. Doubt. It. At least when consoles are concerned. PC’s will most likely experience a massive boost, but consoles won’t. Sony and Microsoft have flog themselves this generation trying to push their consoles to the limit, but ended up selling it at a tremendous loss. The market can’t afford to make another risky jump, and recuperate. Why do you think the smartphone/tablet markets are speculated to overtake it in the next few years?
Sony will likely opt for cheaper off-the-shelf parts as opposed to heavily custom materials like the past. They did it with the Vita, and they’ll do it again.
Microsoft can more than afford to take a loss on hardware, so it’s going to be quite clear which console will be the bigger beast in the next generation. The 360 came out with a GPU on par with gaming PCs back in 2005 and there is no credible reason why they can’t do such again. None.
They will focus on the casuals who don’t care about good graphics.
Keep believing that.

Keep in mind that GOOD graphics will be easy to accomplish at this point. All of the next-gen systems will have good graphics, unless you compare them to the highest of the high-end custom-built PC’s out there.
And really, anything of this gen’s quality at this point is the perfect quality as far as graphics goes.
None of the next-gen consoles really need to do a gigantic leap to satisfy the vast majority of gamers.
Because let’s not forget that the 360 started making profit when the Kinect came out. Knowing how greedy MS is, it would make sense on focus on the market that it’s going to give them money no matter what.

Actually technically they do, they have fable, forza, gears of war, and there’s like 4-or 5 more that I can’t recall at the moment, this is excluding all kiect gmames. They don’t have as many good exclusives compared to other companies though. But their main exclusives are VERY good games. Same can be said of the other companies too.

Shorter load times can easily be remedied with a SSD. The advancements of CPUs can be applied to having some better AI and as for bugs/glitches, well time to hire more game testers.

I actually don’t have a problem w/ other iterations of Batman after the Nolan films. Sure I’m not going to take Adam West’s Batman as the model for all Batmen to follow, but the camp in that show is endearing enough get enjoyment out of watching reruns (at least on my part). Really, this all sounds like Rein’s need to sound very “adult,” that, if too prioritized, can be a particularly immature thing.
As for a genuine graphical leap, he really is kidding himself, and this is coming from someone who saw the Agni’s Philosophy video. Yes, such visuals running in real time is very impressive, but it’s nothing like a leap from N64 to the original Xbox or even the Gamecube to PS3. Until certain specs are more affordable for game makers and consumers, we’re not quite ready for the level of jump he’s describing. Until then, he and others like him should stop pretending they are taking that step.

The duder is just speaking in general, and not about ps4/xbox720 (even though he was asked about them specifically[which a lot of companies for for some reason instead of just answering the question idk]). Like, literally. Not even about any specific generation of a leap in tech (unless you want to count his cell phone example for some reason even though it’s completely unrelated). I agree with him that there’s always SOME expectation for better visuals. Totally disagree with it being hard to go back to old stuff, but then again I actually play video games enough for visuals to be a triviality.
