Wii Games Are Playable On The Wii U GamePad?

Nintendo’s upcoming console is fully backward compatible with Wii titles. According to Spanish Wii U brand manager Pepe Arcas, it is possible to play Wii games on the Wii U GamePad – thanks to its sensor bar (similar to the sensor bar for Wii), which makes it possible for consumers to point toward its touchscreen and interact with it by using a Wii Remote. This feature hasn’t been confirmed by Nintendo, however.

“We still don’t know if you can play Wii games in the Wii U GamePad. It’s not confirmed, we don’t have any information yet, but as you say (speaking to the interviewer) Wii U is… you can play old Wii games, and as you also said, the Sensor Bar is included in the Wii U GamePad, so you are able to point the Wii Remote at the Wii U GamePad. It makes sense, but we have no information or confirmation about this feature.”

    1. Exactly. If I was Nintendo, I would only implement it for games that had pro controller support, so the Gamepad plays like a classic controller on Wii games. Wii games would recognize the Gamepad as a classic controller. (Like Xenoblade) That would work.

But pointing at the little screen to play Wii games? That would e weird.

      1. I’m thinking how playing tennis or boxing or minigames waving the screen around while trying to look at it seems like a fail…

    2. hi there if you want too leave the room say luanch time you can take your game too the kitchine soo you can game while eating

    3. Personally, I’d love this feature. In fact, for me it might decide whether or not I buy it. I’d love to have a home console in my room, but a TV just takes up too much space. Admittedly, I could head downstairs whenever I wanted to play, but the TV down there is often in use (and when it’s not in use, my brothers usually wish to play games as well, so I’m stuck without an easy way to play games like Metroid Prime 3 and LoZ: Skyward Sword).

    1. What I’m wondering is whether this means that Wii games that could be played with a Gamecube or classic controller orignally will be playable directly on the gamepad or not. Like: you would be able to download a Wiigame and play it like a handheld. This should technically be possible, since the game in question would be able to be played on the gamepad, except you’d also need the Wiimote. But if you play a game – let’s say Super Smash Bros Brawl – that doesn’t need the Wiimote, this should enable the possibility to play as mentioned above.

  1. That is a huge deal, I mean I would definitely be into the idea of playing smash bros brawl or metroid or zelda on the screen alone,

    1. Just imagine playing Mario Kart Wii on this “small” screen…
Thinking about this makes me lol, but just a little bit

      1. Now THAT is a 100% pure platinum revolution. I like to see the Big N uses that concept… especially games from the days of NES, Genesis, Super NES, Turbo Grafx-16, Neo*Geo, etc.

  2. I’m not really sure how practical that would be seeing as the distance you have to be from the screen to use motion controls effectively is much higher than what’s needed to use traditional controls.

    1. Yeah “portable” if you don’t leave the house, which isn’t portable. You can probably bring it in the bathroom though.

        1. we don’t really know what the range is yet… nintendo said it has to be the same room.. the signal might be able to penetrate a thin wall but i wouldn’t expect much more than that

          1. edit: my bad they did say it could be in another room provided the wall isn’t too thick
and we all know how thin japanese walls are in international comparison^^

            1. not the same thing
you’re comparing a controller that only has to transmit control signals with a controller that has to transmit a video stream of probably well over 1 MB/s

              1. Wouldn’t it be possible to put Wii games on an SD card, and to put that card in the Gamepad? That way you wouldn’t need the console – only the controller.

                1. the controller cannot render the games
the whole processing is done by the console and then streamed to the controller as a video feed
much like gaikai is doing it over the internet

the controller itself only has very basic hardware incapable of any elaborate graphics

                  1. Good point.
Yet I find it hard to believe that the controller itself isn’t capable of much without the console. It has to have some power of it’s own for all the things it will be able to do (or so I think/hope)
All to do is wait really.

                    1. it can display some very simple 2d graphics
you should take a look at the e3 videos
they show how much it can do without the wii u which isn’t much

  3. Cool. Though it probably works better if it can be used as a classic controller(pro) for the wii games that support it(like SSBB and Xenoblade). Pointing with the wii remote att the gamepad sounds kind of weird.

  4. The sensor bar was already confirmed on the Wii U specs sheet back in June. Still, happy the Gamepad can be used this way. Reminds me a bit of the LCD screen for PS One.

    1. Although it is confirmed via the specs sheet from June that the Gamepad contains a sensor bar (and no, I’m not confusing that with the infrared transceiver that allows it to act as a TV remote). I honestly don’t know why else they’d have it there other than for backwards compatibility.

I suppose that only confirms this will be done with the TV, but I’ll keep on hoping this also applies to playing away from the TV.

      1. “I honestly don’t know why else they’d have it there other than for backwards compatibility.”

There was a patent filed that showed that you can drag items between the GamePad and main screens.

    1. Combined with the Wiimote and associated controllers (you wouldn’t actually control w/ the Gamepad), it would allow you to play Wii games away from the TV.

  5. OMG!! i could finally finish xenoblade if this is true :D
my wii is in the living room and everyone watches in there and i hate moving the wii because of the wires.

      1. doesn’t make that much of a difference if the wii u does the upscaling or the TV set does

on both ends it’s just post processing.. image quality isn’t going to improve a whole lot from upscaling either way, but a decent quality TV (i.e. decent quality scaling software) will help

    1. Since a majority of Wii players used Composite cables, Wii games will be upscaled (in a way) from 480i to 480p if using Component cables, etc.

    1. yes that has already been confirmed on last years e3 actually
you can turn the TV off and continue playing on the gamepad

        1. yes that’s true, the developer has to enable that functionality
there are probably some games where it just wouldn’t make any sense

  7. I just saw there’s a Mario Kart Tournment in my country and one of the first place prizes is a $350 gift certificate for buying a Wii U on it’s launch date. Considering the Wii price when it launched here was $299.99, I think the Wii U will cost $300 in NA

  9. well I guess we well have to wait and see if this is real, but for the amount of time that Nintendo keeps saying “if some one wants to watch the TV then you can just play on the game pad” I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a feature in then end. though I hope I could use the game pad its self when need a classic controller. for wii remote I guess we well still need that

  10. this would only be awesome for games that DO NOT use motion controls. it would be stupid to be implemented on say: Skyward Sword. in where the Controller would have to be put down so you could grab the Wiimote and nunchuck.

    1. The gist of this whole idea is that the Gamepad would act as a replacement for the TV, not the control input (unless we’re talking CCP games, in which case it might). The Wiimote and associated controllers would work in conjunction w/ the Gamepad as it contains a sensor bar.

      1. But then you would be swinging the pad around, I see fps getting amazing if that’s the case, actually, Playing Cod might just be fun with the pad now that I think about it.

  11. It would be nice playing Fire Emblem without th problems my TV has, like the lights blurring the characters’ faces. And I could play it in widescreen resolution \ o /

  12. Please be true! I’ve had enough with my gaming room, since there is so much glare coming from my outdated TV. This is genius!

    1. isnt the shitglass like the same resolution because they COPIED the wii u gamepad o_O im sick of you acting like a dick, please find a pussy and get that dick outta your mouth

      1. Shut up you lousey fat cunt, go suck miamottos dick even more u nintendrone faggot cunt , nintendo is for manchilds that are retarded and autistic ..NINTENDO WILL DIE !!

          1. ur so deluded and blinded by nintendo ..if zombiU was on ps3 u wudnt by it but if its on wii u u wud coz ur a retarded fanboy … nintendo will get crushed next gen by the ps4 but u would just be to busy playing ur childish mario all over again …nintendo is a joke to gaming ..SO SUCK A FAT ONE YOU N~DUB FAGGOT !! lol grandmas playing skyward sword !!

            1. Sonysoft needs to upgrade that gamecube gameplay then they would have a slight chance it’s not 2000 anymore

              1. Gamecube gameplay? The ps3 has playstation move, yes you are going to say they copied but they had the idea before ninty but didint use it until later on. So the gamecube style is the same as wii style, that’s what you are saying.

            1. You have no life , playing shitty nintendo shovelware instead of GOOD games and getting inferior ports ..the wii U is a iinferior console when u get it u will regret it ..ENJOY UR GIMICKY TOUCH CONTROLLS OVER AMAZING GRAPHICS …DUMB WiiTards

              1. Ness… quit being a fucking asshole and move on. Just because she had stated her comment doesn’t mean you have to be a childish brat and whine like a little bitch. You mess with a Nintendo supporter, you’re fucking with the wrong forum. This is My NINTENDO News… not your news, fucking hypocrite. If you were in my neighborhood, I would personally kick your fucking ass and rip you another asshole, little boy!

        1. Wait how does a cunt suck a dick o_O

          AND

this really doesnt make sense. If you love sony and microshit, then WHY are you on a nintendo blog?

  13. WAIT HOLD ON

so basically the gamepad would be a tv? Because it has a built in sensor bar. AND the remote points at it. So does that mean it is basically a tv for those games like skyward sword and then it can work like a regular wii u gamepad for games like smash bros brawl?

    1. Thats what i was thinking….i would do that, id have to put it somewhere at eye level and sit back a little, id barely be able to see it. However, this does introduce some interesting control options. Say in a Zelda game, you can that stood on a table in front of you, but i dont think id like that…id rather them use the analog or even the touch screen to use the sword, so youll still have that deep level of combat that was in skyward sword, because the gamepad introduces tons of new ideas for a zelda game, and if its being used heavily, i wouldnt want to be moving hack a forth between controllers

    1. idk if my sister wants to watch tv and i want to play a wii game its good, or if your bathroom is close to ur wii u

  14. galaxy
    galalxy 2
    ssbb
    mario kart wii
    nsmbw
    donkey kong country returns
    sonic colors
    kirby’s return to dreamland

    on the wii u gamepad!

    YES! O_O

  15. Cool! So what about games that are strictly motion control? Would they be transfered to handheld controls…like Wii Sports lol!?

    1. no , You have to use ur shitty wii motes on that piece of shit .. coz that huge cluster fuck controller has a sensor bar so u can use ur wii dildos to play ur kiddy mario and casual shit

  16. if the game pad isn’t HD then neither is the ps3 or xbox, so the wii u will be the 1st HD system, upscaled from 720p doesn’t count, i thought 720p upscaled would look sweet till i got my xbox and upscaled it looks even worse

  17. Ok, for some games like Smash Bros, i probably Mario Kart, seems cool. But what if you need te wiiremote, and you have to have the pad up like that, and use the wii remote to play on the pad, that just seems odd to me….

      1. Yeah. I mean obvious theres tons of games that dont need the wii remote or motion control, like Smash Bros, Mario Kart (i think), Sonic Colours ect.
I think that would be a good idea for HD remastered re-releases of games, and give players multiple control option, sort of how Prime Trilogy was given Prime 3’s controller scheme, you could use that in Mario Galaxy, and use the touch screen to collect star bits and stuff. Im still very curious how a Zelda is going to be on the WiiU….i know what id do, but obviously that doesnt mean that’ll happen

        1. What in the actual fuck? You can’t even PROVE IT.

You think everyone you assume is the same person, I have better things to do than parade around under different usernames like you do all the time.

But in the end, that doesn’t matter, you’re still a whiny little BITCH who can’t do anything to anyone off of his keyboard and if you stepped anywhere within my vicinity, I would have you implanted in the Earth’s crust and watch you choke on your own blood.

          Have a nice day.

          1. You’ve already proven yourself, shit stain. You’re still a dick and a Sony dick rider… who still harasses everyone here at My NINTENDO News. You’re nothing but a coward, a has been, pathetic little scumbag. I’m not feeding you anymore, troll. Good day sir.

            1. Nobody is getting harrassed here. Stupid, shit for brains fanboys like yourself get offended because you worship and SUCK NINTENDO OFF for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Guess what? THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU.

They don’t give a shit about you, and the core gamers don’t give a shit back about Nintendo.

Like it or not, you’re still a little pussy, and I’m sure you’d pussy out under your matress if I chose to hunt you down (trust me, you’re easy to dox) as well. You’re a joke and your whole life is a bloody joke.

              Keep your bullshit up.

    1. hi there yes sony is way over priced sony already put ps4 price on the internet $1,000 and 6 terabyte halographic games going cost a whopping $200 per game and suports 4 9.9 inch oled controlers

  18. If Wii games are truly playable on the Gamepad, good luck trying to read texts in games like Monster Hunter Tri. This’ll be perfect for Wii games with Classic Controller support. Just use the Gamepad controls in place of CC controls. Games with motion controls might be weird to play on the Gamepad though.

    1. yes it wii and lot more like get stuck you can send messages too all wii u consoles smart phones and has video calling like face time with tablet the tablet controler has a 1.3 mp camera

  20. The ps1 was a super nintendo with a cd gimmick huge 3rd party support and virginity ps2 3rd parties dvd gimmick most overated favoritised system’s of all time in my imo

    1. now this is the Stupiddest thing I’ve ever seen, Not only did they have different bits, but to say its an SNES, with CD, and More 3Rd party support is actually a compliment.

now the PS2 basically catered to everyone, from the mas amounts of JRPG’s, FPS, Fighters, SImulators, Action, Adventure, basicaly every genre there was. Stop beign such a butthurt fanboy and leave the past where its at.

  21. Me: Analouge triggers?
    Nintendo: Noooooo! Too expensive!
Me: Pointless infrared sensors which, no matter how useful it might seem for people without second televisions, will be really clunky to use?
    Nintendo: Knock yourself out.

    1. hi there your wrong wii u cost $299 with tablet lots of tenolgy for $299 you get a ibm power 7 quad core 3 ghz 1 gb d-ram 32 mb cache ram 8 flash storage the tablet has 2 288 mb 533 mhz on board flash storage you can store 23 games on the tablet plus 100 too 1,000 games on 8.5 gb flash storage

  22. I brought up this question a few weeks back. The idea I had was to have the UPad on a stand vertically, while I use the Wii Remote and nunchuk to play a Wii game on the TV. I won’t have to look at the UPad, just point the Wii Remote at it. In this case I’m using the UPad as if it were the original Wii’s sensor bar. I’m hoping this will work because that’s how I plan to play Skyward Sword. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. I think it should work :D I hope they allow you to use the gamepad’s controls or a U Pro controller in replacement of a Gamecube. Or else I need to get better at controlling Mario Kart and Smash Bros. in another way…

      1. there i bet they let you play game cube games on the game pad becuase they confirmed flash storage on the tablet a 533 mhz 288 mb ram 2 of them for 576 mb ram toatal wii has 88 mb ram soo please give wii u a fair chance the console is not out yet the future looks bright if not right out of box it will be with up grade software very soon affter luanch

    2. wii controlers have 16 kb of storage and game pad tablet for wii u 576 mb ram at 533 mhz 2 288 mb chips at 533 mhz
