Nintendo America NYC Wii U Preview Event Roundup

Nintendo today revealed full details about how the new Wii U™ home console and its groundbreaking touch-screen Wii U GamePad controller can revolutionize not only video game play but also the way people find and watch TV and video content. The new HD system will offer entirely new ways for consumers to play games and enjoy their favorite programming when it launches in the Americas on Nov. 18. During the launch window, more than 50 games will be available for Wii U, which will be offered in two different colors and configurations. The Basic Set will be offered in white at a suggested retail price of $299.99, while the Deluxe Set, which includes higher storage capacity, additional accessories and the new Nintendo Land™ video game, will be offered in black at a suggested retail price of $349.99.

At a special Wii U preview event in New York, Nintendo also unveiled Nintendo TVii, an application that will let Wii U owners in the United States and Canada find, watch and engage with their favorite video entertainment in fun new ways. Using the GamePad controller, Nintendo TVii lets viewers seamlessly explore available video content from a variety of sources – including live TV, their TiVo DVR and video-on-demand services such as Netflix – all in one easy-to-use interface.

Additionally, Nintendo shared new information about dozens of games on the way for Wii U, including Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros.™ U, LEGO® City: Undercover, BAYONETTA 2, The Wonderful 101™, Capcom’s Monster Hunter™ 3 Ultimate and Activision’s Call of Duty®: Black Ops II. New Super Mario Bros. U offers unprecedented ways for friends and families to play together and explore Mario’s world using the GamePad. Nintendo Land, which will be available as a standalone game or included with the Wii U Deluxe Set, is a virtual theme park featuring a lineup of 12 playable attractions based on Nintendo’s greatest game worlds, including The Legend of Zelda™, Metroid™, Mario™, Animal Crossing™ and Donkey Kong™. As an added bonus for consumers, a Chase McCain LEGO minifigure will come as a special pre-order bonus for those who pre-order a copy of LEGO City: Undercover at participating retailers while supplies last. All of these games will instantly immerse players in a variety of new game-play experiences that are available only on Wii U.

The Wii U Basic Set includes a white Wii U console with 8 GB of internal storage, one white GamePad controller, AC adapters for both the console and controller, a sensor bar and an HDMI® cable. In the Wii U Deluxe Set, components are black. This bundle includes all elements from the Basic Set, as well as the Nintendo Land game, increased console storage capacity of 32 GB, a console stand, GamePad charging cradle and a stand that allows users to place the GamePad vertically on a table. Consumers who purchase the Deluxe Set also will be enrolled in the Deluxe Digital Promotion, which lets Wii U owners receive points for each digital download and redeem those points for future downloadable content from the Nintendo eShop. The promotion is currently planned through 2014.

        1. true, but i feel like another strong meeting(perhaps a nintendo direct) will come up before the launch, like one last good explanation before people kill each other in stores to get one

    1. yeah its a no brainer to get the bundle, its $50 more but you get a game, subscription, and more stuff. i saved only $240 for wiiu and $30 for games :(

      1. you can easily get the other part :) , im pretty sure gamestop will treat the wii u like the 3ds xl, just trade in your wii(since wii u is backwards compatible with its games) and you might save $100 or less

        1. Or you can just save more. ;) You have 2 months. Plus, you get to keep your Wii. I still have my Gamecube, DS, GBA, and now Wii. They’re nice to have. And you get your Wii save files without having to convert. Your only $100 short, just go for it.

  1. Alright my final thoughts about since I know everything I want to know about it.

The launch games still arent grabbing my atention at all except maybe mario but that aint my favourite mario game. I would love to have the deluxe eddition but that price is just ugly… I have other things to buy. Ill need to get a HDTV for sure now since it comes with a HDMI cable and I have an old ass tube TV atm but TVs are fucking expensive and it will take away from me getting a Wii U. I would love to buy it day one just for the experience but I have no idea if EB games in Canada will be doing preorders on it like with gamestop in america, it will be just to chaotic to get one with out preordering. The games dont seem to have a price at all yet which is lame but im asuming $59 like for the other systems. I do think it is great how it will be able to transfer my games downloaded on my Wii to it so ill have more to play but ill still need my Wii for gamecube games which honestly I play more then my Wii games. So right now this might be something ill have to pass on cause there is so much shit I need to buy, got bills to pay too. I need a xbox harddrive still and Halo 4 in November and im asuming my Wii U purchase will be easily arround $500 with tax and that mario game. A TV might cost cheaper then that… but I want a good one so that is easily $700 there. idk… its just difficult…

    1. It works with your shitty old wii cables .

The wiiu is the best console ever made , nuff said . it has games for every type of gamer , Noob , casual , hardcore , kid , woman etc etc etc .

It is litteraly the best console ever seen .
and you are complaining about $299 or $350 ?????

      It’s really fucking cheap!!!

      1. I doubt it will be the best console ever made because there will always be a next generation where nintendo will do something different again.

Because I payed $350 before tax for my original PS3 that goes to show expensive it is this Wii U :P

and I do need a new TV because the one I have is being borrowed and the guy wants it back in a few months.

        1. That doesnt exactly show how expensive the WiiU is when you must of bought it during the price drop or second hand. This is a new system with more power than a ps3, its damn cheap, you get a free game, free online, 10% on digital, forever, and other stuff. Its cheap as hell.

          1. It was brandnew and it came with motorstorm.

Eh PS3 and 360 are old now so
it was a given that the Wii U has better specs but when the next PS and Xbox come it will probaly fall behind because that is what they are about.

            1. Well it still wasnt an original price of the ps3, nearly half the price.

And its not exactly “what theyre about”, all of nintendos console except the Wii have beem graphically on par or better than anything else at the time.

Dont expect ps4/720 do be a big leap, they wont, and we wont see a “true next gen” wiiu game until at least the ps4/720 is out.
Look at early 360 games. Basically HD ps2 games.

      2. It might yet turn out to be the best console ever made, and their creative approach to things like Miiverse definitely shines through. Can’t wait to see what kind of amazing things they’ll create using the controller.

With those said, it being more cost effective worries me a little more than it costing a little more and having all the right tech inside. The Wii was fundamentally a GameCube1.5. Nintendo brought all the right innovation to sell it at launch and begin a new direction for gaming (obviously, because the two other companies copied them blatantly afterwards), but there’s no question as well that the Wii was underpowered from day one.

Had it not been, I think some games game which were 80% perfect, like Skyward Sword, could have been 100%. (i don’t mean even graphics, in this, but the necessary power to have the game function correctly. The loading delay between leaping off Skyloft and flying through the clouds felt hugely wrong every time.)

I want to love the WiiU so much, but I don’t know if I can justify buying at launch, especially with so few games to support the purchase right then.

      3. Are you sure it works with component cables? Where’s the confirmation? I need to know because I don’t have an HDTV yet.

    2. Suggestion when buying a TV:
Investigate well before going to the store

DOnt let the store clerk fool you into thinking LCD LED is better than LCD CCFL (regular LCD tvs). They are the same thing.
Consider the position were you are going to put it and the quantity of light.

Plasmas are cheaper and bigger and have superb black colors, but have trouble in too bright places.
CCFL LCDs and LED LCDs are better for Bright areas, but lack in dark colors.

      1. Oh dont worry I know my TVs well. Ill be getting mine from a trusted small TV store where my aunt got a great deal and great TV and the guys knew what they were doing and not being pushed by commision rather then like best buy or futureshop etc.

I wont get a plasma as beautiful as they are Im not loosing it to video games which ill be playing a lot and then you got that stupid ghosting effect and your Tv is wrecked… LCDs are great for it and cheap but LEDs are beautiful too… And I aint fooled by that sharp yellow LED TV, no media is made for having RBGY its all RBG xD

        1. Get a Panasonic plasma…I have had one for over two years now, and I have left the thing on one screen multiple times for long periods of time…Panasonic has a scrolling white heat bar built in that you can run whenever you get some burn in, and inside of a few minutes even the worst burn in I’ve got is cleared away…not to mention the refresh rate for fast motion is soooo much better than LCD and LED.

  2. CAll OF DUTY ”FULL HD 60 FPS” said by that activision mofo .

why would you buy it on the ps3 or 360 when it is completely inferior to the wiiu , just saying . also , instead of split screen we have ‘own screens’ . 2 player online coop , one using tv one using gamepad. WINNING!!!!!!!

    1. It’s full HD 60 FPS on those consoles, as well. I’m still getting it for Wii U, but there’s really not that much of a difference. Except for the GamePad splitscreen play. Pretty exciting stuff.

        1. People always forget that. It’s 720p upscaled, not to mention when can’t do HD properly like BF3 (1280×704) or when they just upscaled a game in 546p.

    2. Because it will be better to play it on there as its more supported for those systems and millions of others will get it for 360/PS3 so that means a more active online.

  3. nintendo land should have been packed in with the basic version too >_<
was planning on getting the black one anyways … hopefully as cost goes down, nintendo will make the systems with more memory like the early ps3 n xbox 360 versions one can only hope … excited about bayonetta 2 ^_^

  4. Hey guys, does a hdmi cable really need to use those 6 inputs? I mean, my hdtv has 6 inputs (2 of each color) but 3 inputs are used for a dvd player so idk what to do now

  5. I’m taking November 18 and 19th off as vacation days, then playing the F**k out of my BLACK WiiU!!

I’m so freakin excited, I cannot wait. I’ve got a birthday in October, and Christmas. Those should help buffer the blow to my large, scaley wallet. ;)

I’m gonna Kick Mario’s butt in NSMBU!!

    Bowser for the Win!

  6. idc care for shelling out 50 more dollars for 4x the amount of space of the basic, two games included as well as multiple accessories for the thing.

  7. Glad they decided to pack in NintendoLand, although im loving the ZombiU bundle pack in Europe too.

And aftee seeing that conference, i want NintendoLand, but i also really want NSMBU.

Just the whole overworld map being one thing, new changes to suits like running on walls with mini mario, the rush mode, and the challenges, just looks awesome.

    1. I’ll be getting the premium Wii U. Getting NSMBU, Rayman Legends, Pikmin 3 and Bayonetta 2. That’s a pretty awesome launch. Don’t know why there’s so much hate.

      1. Bayonetta 2 wont be a launch game…its just an upcoming game.

Im getting Pikmin 3, NSMBU, AC3, and Rayman. Then i still have about 6-7 games i want after that xD

  8. In short it wasn’t bad, it was actually good but not great… I still haven’t seen that game that tells me “Holy Shit! I must get it!!!”

        1. I really liked it, but its not for everyone, its weird, but once you get a hang of the fight mechanics, its a shitload of fun. Feels a bit dated now though, being an early 7th gen game, but its still alot of fun.

Plus her specials make her go naked xD (no naughty shots though, just bare ass)

  9. is the only place to pre order the system right now at gamestop? that is the only place online Im seeing the pre order available..but I will have to go to the store to do it since they charge over 12 bucks for shipping here in California..

  10. Sickr, it wont let me post them, but theres a bumch of new trailers from the press event, including ZombiU, NSMBU and NintendoLand whch shows off some of the new attractions and multiple stages

  11. I’m definitely getting that black Wii U. There was never any doubt in my mind that the Wii U would be awesome and the presentation proved it. A basic bundle for the casuals and premium one for the dedicated gamers.I need an HDMI to component cable though. Leave luck to heaven.

        1. guess I will go today and pre order it..gamestop charges WAY too much for shipping so will just get it in store..dont know if there will be a mad rush to get this system so dont know if I can go tomorrow instead
Are all those games Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros U, Rayman Legends all coming out on launch day(Sorry for all the questions I just got up and missed the nintendo show)

          1. Not everyone of them will come out launch day, but they will come out during the launch window. That’s the period of time from November 18th (launch date) to the end of March next year.

            1. oh but there is not an official release date for the games yet I assume?
I dont know if I should order the premium bundle from gamestop or wait for another store to offer it(like Best Buy, etc) since best buy does not charge shipping charges..gamestop does..Id go to the store and pre order it but not sure if they are doing that today or not

                1. will wait and see. I dont see this mad rush for the system anyway, will probably just end up ordering it tomorrow, unless best buy posts it today

  12. I thought there was supposed to be a new 1st party game announcement?

Is there more info to come later today. The release for the event said 10 am to 4 pm so there’s still about 3 hours left. Is the remaining portion just a Wii U experience event?

  14. if the back version includes ninendoland and its 350$ whats the point in buying the white version at 300$ and if you want nintendoland an additional 50 makes 350 :S :S

    im confused

  15. lol the 3ds what a joke

$300 for a nintendo system with 8GB memory for $300 u could get a 250GB Xbox 360 game pad or not this console is coming out a YEAR BEFORE the xbox and playstation nintendo NEEDS TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER AND REALIZE WHERE GAMING GOING with more violence i mean i love the older mario and zelda games but this nintendo isnt the same

    1. Video gaming is not leading towards more violence. That’s only where growing teenagers interests have led, any gamer who forgets their video game roots simply because they are introduced to violent/mature gaming is a poser.

Nintendo personifies everything that is good in video games. Just because you aren’t 6-10 anymore does not mean Mario and Zelda are no longer fun. Zelda will forever be more amazing than anything Microsoft produces. Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, all fail compared to the epicness that is The Legend of Zelda
