Nintendo: Mario And Luigi Do Not Have A Last Name

Based on the forgettable Super Mario Bros. film, Mario is the last name of Mario and his younger brother, Luigi. Despite that, according to legendary Nintendo designer and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario and Luigi don’t even have a last name.

  1. People considered that horrible movie as canonical basis for their names? Unless it comes from the creators mouth. Horrible movies mean jack squat.

    1. i think they HAVE a last name but its not yet decided yet kinda like how people say that jesus’ last name is christ when its not so maybe its the mario BROS and luigi BROS with “bros” as there last name

      1. Uh… I don’t think we can assume that when Miyamoto is saying they don’t have a last name. When they announce a last name, then you will be partially right, but for now they don’t have one at all. (Not even one to be revealed later unless they do, in which case, you are right about that)

      2. Jesus did have a last name: “Of Nazareth”. In ancient times, people’s last names were either determined by lineage (“Joshua the son of Nun“), occupation (Simon the Sorcerer), personal characteristics (Eric the
        Red
), or location (Joan of Arc). Some of these persist in modern surnames: for instance, you might have a friend named Danny England, etc.

              1. funny but alan is right that was how people were referred to in ancient times in fact that is where the whole -son thing comes from like robinson(robin’s son), ericson(eric’s son) etc. get it by taking away of or the and continuous alteration to language surnames kinda took on different meanings it why some people have names like well england and what not cause it has to do with a ancestor who had something to do with england also the jury is still out on how much of the odyssey is fictional and fact

                1. They know the trojan wars happen thats for sure and some of his travels but im pretty sure posiden nor a cyclops are non fictional characters. Heck the arthor i believe his name was homer probably was inspired stories either happened or current for his time. Like the cyclops myth dates a little older than odyssey and the tales were inspirations of giant elephant bones as for posiden they were just ways back than of explaining the storms, tides, whirlpool and sea storms at that time period.

        1. “Van der” is a better modern example for example “Van Der” means “from the” in Dutch “Van Der Velt” would be from the farm

    2. Well, if it is the only source then whatelse should we think? I am glad it wasn’t, because Mario Mario sounded awkward.

    3. I liked the theatrical movie “Super Mario Bros.” and I did not find it horrible. As for the surname Mario, it was mentioned in live-action segments of the “Super Mario Bros. Super Show” produced years before the theatrical movie.

  2. Just read that in Nintendo Power haha!

Only news head line I want to see next: “WII U DELUXE PREORDERS BACK IN STOCK” Nintendo gods, make it happen!

        1. They won’t, pre-orders are based on future shipment. Therefore that won’t happen because shipment is always decided before hand.

      1. That too. But if I don’t get a Wii U, it’s only salt on the wound, insult to injury, a kick while I’m down!

        Get how I feel?

          1. I had one day one.. And hopefully I will have a Wii U day 1 (Nov 30 for me) aswell :) I pre ordered to pre order ffs :S

      1. That’s the plan, man. I’m gunna be glued to the website more than before. Soon as I see the headline “More Pre orders available” I’m not even gunna read te article, I’ll head right for GameStop(probably call first!)!

  3. As much as I’d love to forget that movie as well, calling them “Mario Bros.” despite not having a last name is making Luigi’s existence yet more pointless.

  4. I think one day again, they should refer to Mario and Luigi as “Mister”! It might sound stupid but hell, we don’t want to forget the fact that they are two grown, very talented and intelligent men!

    1. Curse you talking and typing at the same time…
“I can understand them not having last names” should have been the end of that sentence.

    1. I know right. The weirdest part is that it doesn’t have news even though nintendo have showcased wii u and you’d think there would be additional news

  5. this is no spam i been working pretty hard on my youtube account can you guys subscribe to me message me on youtube when you subscribe i will subscribe back

    1. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi are just younger versions of the Mario and Luigi (referenced in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time)

      1. Duh… There names are Mario and Luigi, but yet they are called the Mario Bros. You would expect their last name to be Mario. That’s the only logical reasoning.

  6. Well think about it. When Mario and Luigi were born they were well… being delivered and bowser got in the way of that and they landed on yoshi’s island. Do they even know there parents?

  7. As much as I hate to agree with that movie, the fact that they’re the ‘mario brothers’ does imply that their last name is Mario. Take, for example, if Tom cruise had a famous brother and they were a double act, they would be the Cruise brothers, not the ‘tom’ brothers cause that wouldn’t make sense.

  8. I remember watching an old documentary from the 90’s on Youtube where there was a Nintendo worker who stated that the two brothers’ full names were: “Mario Mario” and “Luigi Mario”
Really, after watching that statement getting announced that early, I’m still not convinced that they don’t have any surnames.

  10. Hahaha, this article made me lol :)
I think it’s better that they don’t have a last name. At least, its better than “Mario” as a last name.
