Reggie Comments On The Last Story, Xenoblade And Monolith’s Wii U Game

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has explained that the company wanted to see just how well both Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story sold in Europe before committing resources to either game. Fils-Aime also said that there’s a lot of buzz related to Monolith Soft’s forthcoming Wii U game in Japan. He said that Nintendo of America would love to publish it dependant on the level of marketing support, how many copy’s it will sell, and whether it will be a profitable venture for Nintendo America.

“We know that they’re working on a game. I personally haven’t seen it, but I know there’s a lot of excitement in Japan and Kyoto about what they’re working on, so I look forward to seeing it. In the end, if it’s a game that we decide to publish from… what would be a second-party standpoint, certainly we’d love to bring it here to the US. The way we look at the opportunity is, given a level of marketing support, how much are we gonna sell and is it gonna be a profitable venture?”

  1. Good to know Reggie. Also, I bet the Wii U game will do well, since Xenoblade did well, and people are probably frothing at the mouth for a sequel to that great game.

      1. Pay no attention to this username

I’d say that’s pretty well for a Japanese rpg. Also don’t forget that you could only buy it at 2 locations, gamestop and on nintendo’s website.

        1. What do you mean “for a JRPG” ? I don’t think that the fact that a game is a JRPG has any significant influence on how well it will sell.
And uh, considering the number of Wii owners, 300k is a quite poor number indeed, no matter where the game has been sold.

          1. jrpg been on the decline in sales in the US for a while. That plus hardly anywhere sold the game makes 300k quite amazing. Very liittle exposure made the numbers small.

              1. Nin¥endo 1P > Micro$oft 1P + $ony 1P
                Nin¥endo 3P < Micro$oft 3P or $ony 3P

let's get the facts straight – everyone likes money.

  2. At the end of the day, isn’t it the main Nintendo HQ that has the final say? So what Reggie is saying about the game coming here has no real effect unless Iwata is willing to let him do it.

  3. FFS Reggie this whole cautious approach meant that many fans over in the US had to wait almost a year to play those games, not to mention that they never got Pandora’s Tower. Even as a European gamer, I was frustrated at the fact that so many gamers were being denied the opportunity to experience these great titles.

  4. If MonolithSoft were to create a new JRPG… this time on Wii U, I would love to see Nintendo of America publish that title in North America.

      1. No -.- but its a pretty solid fact that the less owners of 360 or ps3 out of japan arent going to buy an RPG theyve never heard of, while anyone who owns a WiiU and is a “core” gamer would.

        1. You can not generalize people like that, all the more if it is definitely not true. With which facts do you support that kind of statement ? Why do you talk other people down when it has nothing to do with this issue at all ? That’s just pathetic.

        2. Indie Royale has a winter budnle going for pc games at indieroyale.com and thanks for the listing for Cards Against Humanity, I’ve never heard of it before now but it’s gotten so many high ratings I had to pick it up for our game night.

  5. If the game is anywhere as epic as Xenoblade Chronicles America will get it. I think they only waited so long on Xenoblade and Last Story because they wanted to save it for the last year of the Wii’s life because there have been very few games for the Wii this year. Leave luck to heaven.

      1. dude, take a chill pill. what do you want to call us, ‘United States of Americans’? seriously, get over the fact that everyday terminology and absolutely correct terminology are not the same thing. not many countries in the Americas actually have ‘America’ in their name, as with “The United States of America”. There may be no others that do, I don’t know for certain, but I am well versed in the names of all the major countries in the continental Americas, north and south (excluding the small island nations). So I’m not ignorant, though naming them proves nothing as googling is easy. You seem to have a problem, and I have a solution.

Get off your high horse, and get over yourself.

  6. But Reggie, it wasn’t you who brought over the last story. Even though it sold best in North America, out of every region. I think that’s more than enough reason to bring it over. At least as a downloadable title. And if you actually market it. I swear, if new franchises got half the advertising of Mario, they’d do so much better. Mario virtually sells itself. I don’t even know why Nintendo markets Mario games as much as they do, they really don’t need to. Market the unheard of games, that way, when sequel time comes around, they’ll have consumer bases and you can have a successful new IP. Everyone wins. It just might take Nintendo til that second round to start pulling in the dough, buy they’ll get it if people know they’re selling it

  7. just had to ask. how well did The Last Story and Xenoblade sold worldwide anyway? Both are great games especially The last Story for me was just outstanding, Simple story yet sophisticated dialogue, directing and battle system. i have yet to finish Xenoblade but its also fantastic. Can’t wait for new Nintendo RPGs ^_^

    1. Xenoblade sold around 700 thousand worldwide, maybe more by now. I think the last story is around 350 to 400. I actually prefer the last story over xenoblade, simply cause I like the battle system so much more and I suck at the xenoblade battles. So the sales weren’t great, but they were good. Enough so for xenoblade to almost definitely set up for a sequel or spiritual successor, but I’m not as sure of the last story. Too bad cause I’d love another, at least spiritual successor to that. Pandora’s tower is another one of those japanese games that didnt make it stateside. It did come out in Europe though. Sadly, that one only has around 150, and looks like it won’t get a us release, and thanks to region locking, you can’t even get a UK version. Though there are programs to get by that. Anyhow, it looks like we may get more of these types of games, but only in the xenoblade style or franchise. Again, another last story would be great by me. At least make these types of games digital releases. Better than not at all.

      1. “I actually prefer the last story over xenoblade, simply cause I like the battle system so much more and I suck at the xenoblade battles.”

… How does this even make sense?

      2. why they sell so bad? Look at the price £30-£45 per game and they were released incognito. If It was for final fantasy XIII which did that bad, I would not even noticed those games. marketing for those games had been shockingly bad. So from my point of view they sale very well, if you take those factor into account

      1. It didn’t sell nearly enough outside the US. Less than 200,000 worldwide. The US could probably up sales another 100k, but I guess they figured no point

        1. Well that certainly explains alot. May have to mod the Wii and import it then seeing as it may not come over here.

  8. Haven’t finished Xenoblade so shame on me for that, and I got the Last Story because of the limited print run, aka it’s still sealed in it’s plastic. But I’m all up for the Monolith Wii U game. If not, we can always do an online petition!

  9. I swear to god reggie if there is a way to possible make a better game than xenoblade “only god knows” I’ll fight you if you try doing the same thing you did to xenoblade

  10. SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY. MARKET/ADVERTISE IT RIGHT! There a lot of people who would love more Japanese games in the west

  11. Localize Japanese games for download only if you have to. Stop neglecting us of these games :) I’m drunk lol

  12. I kinda think that the reason why we waited so long for Xenoblade is because NOA wanted to test if americans still give a crap about JRPGS. It’s most likely not to reason, but it may as well be that.
Also Reggie, So far, Monolith’s next game is one of the very few things that can influence me to buy a Wii U, and I can’t be the only one who feels that way. If you localize the game ASAP, it will not only sell well, but you’ll also sell more consoles, then more games.

  15. Wait a minute. Monolith Soft is at this time a 1st party studio, right? So what the hell is Reggie talking about? Monolith Soft has prove that their games are great and they are a Nintendo fully own studio, so no reason to hesitate on publishing future offerings, right? Weird Nintendo not taking advatage of this recently owned studio.

    1. What is more odd to me is Nintendo could offer the game as a digital download only… eliminating 95% of the risk. One image of production art for advertising, and a good spot on the Wii U eShop and all would be good for everyone. Well, theoretically. :-)
