Pachter Says He Isn’t A Fan Of Wii U, And Thinks Third-Party Support Will Be Dire

Famed Wedbush Morgan industry analyst Michael Pachter has confirmed that he isn’t a fan of Nintendo’s forthcoming console, Wii U. He says that Wii U is very similar to the DS, but looking between the television and the GamePad just doesn’t feel natural. Pachter also went on to say that he thinks third-party support for the console will be dire as very few developers will support the console. Here’s Pachter’s rant in full for those interested.

“I’m not a fan of the console. Essentially I look at the GamePad and the television, the two screens, and I see a DS that’s disaggregated. It’s very similar to playing a DS game. The difference is, with the DS your line of sight is on both screens. It’s easy to toggle back and forth. With the GamePad on the Wii U you have to look back and forth, and that’s not natural.

“I understand the console is going to be way more powerful than the DS. It’s entirely possible you’ll get great experiences that are console-like but take advantage of the touch screen. But I think most developers look at the GamePad as either a gimmick or very DS like, and they don’t want to incorporate the touchscreen features because the games aren’t any better for them.”

“Nintendo will pioneer, they’ll do a far better job than anybody of exploiting the console and the control scheme, and I think others will learn from them,” he added. “I’m afraid we’re going to have a repeat of the Wii cycle from the publishers’ perspective and the developers’ perspective, where very few people will support it. Then if it’s successful they’ll come in, and they’ll fail. When they fail, they’ll go away again. The reason I think they’ll fail is, I can’t think of a third-party publisher that did well on the DS. I mean, Scribblenauts, so there are a handful games and you can count them. Nobody did very well on the DS, and I don’t think anybody’s going to do very well on the Wii U.”

“They sold 90 million Wiis; it’s certainly less than 90 million hardcore fans. I would guess it’s between seven and ten million, and it could be 20 million but they don’t all have $350. When the hardcore fans are satisfied, I think sales are going to drop precipitously because I don’t think the thing is priced competitively with what most people think is a comparable console, Xbox 360 or PS3.

“I think that this thing, rather than launching and being the cheapest of the three consoles, which the Wii was, and very novel because no one had ever seen motion control before, this console is launching and it’s the most expensive of the three consoles and it’s not novel because it’s very much like the DS.”

    1. It doesn’t cost that anymore though…
but with microsofts new console only a year away, i think the wiiU will soon look very affordable.
The super slim ps3 doesn’t represent much of a price reduction either so it may be most expensive for now, but for a brand new system its looks set to be very competitive soon :D

      1. Microsofts next console will not be too much more expensive, if it is, it will be sold for a loss, because unlike nintendo they have that luxury.

    2. Mr patcher is such a brave gentleman to even bother with the likes of such lowly peasants. I wholeheartedly agree and predicted he would abonding the wretched foul stence that is nintendo. Mr patcher such a handsome charming famly man has to deal with crazy fanatics. Id rather support microsoft. When the xbox 720 comes out the kinect 2 will have added implemented augmentations to it. Screw the shitendo once miyamoto is gone you tools will relize they relied on heavy handed back tactics of theowest calibur. Nice job Mr. Pather I look forward to your analysis of the next microsoft console.

      1. How do you agree? Nintendo knows that a lot of 3 party will have trouble and unlike the wii which they forced Devs to use motion controls they also have…wait for it…..wait a little longer….THE PRO CONTROLLER! They don’t have to use the the game pad they can even shut the screen off. U both are idiots for thinking otherwise. 3 diff ways for a dev to make a control sceme for a game I.e. wii-mote gamepad or pro controller patchers statement are all invalid because of that single idea. Kinnect 2 may b good idk I haven’t seen it but it’s the equalivulant in a devs mind as the gamepad. “Now I have to think up a good way to actually utilize the kinnect besides dull voice commands and aquard movements” get real dude start thinking, wii u will own

    3. Exactly… And for some reason people are comparing the current PS3/XBOX prices to the price of a completely new console… What the fuck, people? Even if the technology for the Radeon chips, etc, looks “old”, there’s still a lot of R&D going into it that actually costs that money…

    1. God forbid someone having a contrasting differing view on something especially when dealing with console and a company whose history is heavly influenced ln backstabbing and betrayal. Dont get me wong ill be buying the wiiu so my kids can laugh till their hearts content at how an atrociously weak system is haild in high regards.
A bid thee ode you classless rapscallion

  1. Silly Pachter is silly. But he has a couple of points. BUT one thing worth to note is that I think very few games will abuse the uPad. I think alot of games will have it as a kind of menu to easier go through different stuff. The reason for that is that to fully use it they can’t abuse it as an important part of the pad is that you can play the game on it. I don’t think developers will put is some crappycrapcrap if it costs them that possibility.

Also, I think alot of third party DS games did a very good job using the touch screen, maybe pachter just plays shovelware, because that’s what it sounds like.

  2. I don’t give a damn about what Pachter says. I’m tired of hearing about the analysts. I know what I need to know to have confidence in the Wii U.

  3. One thing that interested me and grabbed my attention is: Having two screens is surely better for ones eyes. Yes this is just my opinion backed with no factual evidence – but I’m trying to think logically here, and if you are playing a game for plenty of time (over an hour), ideally you want to be changing your focus as much as possible.

        1. Thyself actually true. I thunk many ppl multitask every day with screens, from their phone to their computer Every day.

      1. Just speculating, but could it not be argued that is because you (as most people) are just used to focusing on one point for long periods of time. A lot of people have trained to be like this since there parents first sat them facing a TV screen – guess I’m saying it doesn’t mean it’s good for ones eyes to stay in this routine. If I am not watching a TV screen, my eyes are constantly changing and adjusting focus all the time – this is natural for any human being. If one finds it uncomfortable adjusting focus constantly between 2 objects – could this not perhaps mean their eyes have partially degraded?

  4. “I can’t think of a third-party publisher that did well on the DS”

    Level-5
    Square Enix
    Capcom
    Sega
    Activision
    EA
    Lucas Arts
    Disney
    Ubisoft
    THQ

All had multi-million sellers on the DS.

    1. Very true, Scribblenauts actually only sold about 1 million units. Dragon Quest 9, Professor Layton, MySims, Kingdom of Hearts, Cooking Mama and Final Fantasy games have sold more than Scribblenauts let alone many other series.

    2. That “multi-million” sales you claim is already a given; Pachter is saying that “multi-million” WASN’T ENOUGH. And the developers would wholly agree. You’ll note that the amount those companies’ games sold on either the DS or the Wii was not as much as the 360 or PS3. And don’t throw a non sequitur by saying the Wii sold the most units ever; IT FUCKIN ISN’T ABOUT THAT. It’s about the GAME sales, NOT the console sales, that’s the issue here.

      1. That would be goalpost shifting.

The statement was simply, nobody did well on the DS. Not, nobody did relatively well on the DS in comparison to other platforms.

        1. And even then, that wouldn’t be true. The rise of Level-5 on the back of the Layton games is proof enough regardless of the other 9 companies that I listed.

Prior to Layton, they weren’t big enough to self-publish anything and had to rely on others like Sony and Square Enix. Thanks to the Layton smash hit success, they are now perfectly capable of self-publishing titles.

      2. Until you look at Nintendo’s first part sales of mario and pokemon on those platforms.

        Mario kart wii = 36million , NSMBwii = 25million , NSMBDS = 25 million . Nintendo keep themselves going , they don’t even need third parties , that’s just extra.

      3. Reply to my comment instead… Seriously, Dragon Quest IX on the DS sold more copies than Grand Theft Auto IV on the 360, and that’s the best selling third party game on the console apart from CoD games. Also, more people own Cooking Mama than Uncharted…

      4. To be fair, publishers don’t have the most realistic of expectations and can almost never be pleased. They could sell twice as many copies of a game as there are consoles on the market and have every single person on the face of the earth sending them a check for $1000 just for the hell of it and they would still write it off as a loss because of “those damn pirates”-this and the “used game market”-that.

  5. Lol, Pachter, it’s either FOR or AGAINST the Wii U, if you keep wavering in between you lose my respect. What I’ve gathered so far is that he dislikes the Wii U, and thinks that hardcore people won’t buy it, yet he thinks they will because of Bayonetta 2, and he believes that the launch line-up is impressive, but that the Wii U is too much like the DS. Then there’s the third party support, which despite him saying earlier that it was reasonable he now thinks it is dire? I’m confused!???!

    1. Don’t forget to mention above all no matter how much crap he talks he is still going to buy a wii u, lol that’s always important

    2. well he’s getting thousands of idiots to listen to his relatively unimportant opinion and he’s getting payed for it so that’s all he cares about

  6. Of course Pachter doesn’t like the Wii U, the man has made his name in the gaming community by always predicting the worst for Nintendo, regardless of the fact that he’s always wrong. He hasn’t been getting much press lately, and this is his tried-and-true method to get attention.

  7. Pacter is an Anti-Nintendo, he loses viewership because of his bigotry. His views are ridiculous. Nintendo sold over 150 million DS and over 100 million Wii. The Wii U has everything to succeed. If third party publishers don’t want to make games for Wii U then they will lose money because everyone is getting a Wii U. Wii U will have record launch sales and sell more than any other system ever has, the only question is if they maintain those sales. Activision and EA is supporting Wii U, if Capcom and Square and Konami supports it, it’s all over.

  8. Not thinking it is natural sounds a tad bit like “senior citizen talk” to me. I think that gaming basically came to a crossroads, that spurred the big companies to continually make the decision: Keep doing what everybody else is doing, or try something different?

I think Nintendo has been the pioneer once again. Motion controls were a joke when first mentioned, and so has this concept suffered at the hands of the prognosticating public. I can’t say “IT WILL BE THE BEST SYSTEM OF ALL TIME” but I can say “Let’s give (this new) piece (of hardware) a chance”

  9. Pachter already said he’s getting one, along with Bayonetta. This guy flip-flops more than any politician. I don’t know why people pay him money for bashing Nintendo all the time. I didn’t even read the post, no need. I already know he’s a Nintendo Troll.

  10. This guy doesn’t make up his mind, he just wants media attention by whoring out with his opinions. Apparently, he is very successful at that when blogs post everything he says. I bet if he farted, bloggers would post it and call it fresh news.

Seriously, unlike the Wii, where you MUST create games with motion controls or else it will be very limited to commands (no shoulder buttons no extra buttons etc), and you won’t want to develop for the Pro Controller because it’s no guarantee that people bought it or will re-think about buying your game simply because they don’t want a Pro Controller.

Now with the Wii U, they don’t have that excuse. Why? Because even if they didn’t want to implement 2nd screen or touch-controls, they still have all the buttons needed to use for a “standard” game, all the buttons are in the gamepad even if they scrapped the screen, and it comes with every console, so they will develop games to it.

Heck, the Wii U is getting plenty 3rd-party support and I don’t see a reason for it not to. And comparing the Wii U with current gens game is pathetic, I wanna see him saying that when the PS4 is more expensive than PS3 or Xbox 360. *sigh*

  11. Yeah, i think what you dont realise Pachter is that you dont dislike the WiiU, you dislike the lack of creativity and talent in the gaming industry.

You just said you can have these amazing games using both. So, whats the problem?
    Developers.

  12. Pachter clearly doesn’t think that through. It is not natural to change view between the big screen and the controller? So when your on a journey through unknown territory in real life, it is not natural to look down on a map for directions? On the same journey in real life…. is it not natural to look down to open your bagback (zombiU)? Is it not natural to look down on your cellphone, when a text message comes in? I’m only talking about the most basic uses of the Wii U controller. I’m looking forward to see what developers bring to the table idea-wise. And if the haven’t any: Just use t for maps, HUD and Inventory, and everything is fine. :-)

    1. Amen to that.

The second screen is gonna prove a big deal useful, at least just to lighten the info display on the main screen, which goes very smoothly with Nintendo’s entering the HD world in my opinion.

Very convenient: you’ve got HD graphics AND almost only them on your tv screen. That’s a brilliant idea.

    2. Also, as the other guy stated: It is really better for the eyes to change the focus every now and then instead of staring on the TV-Screen for long periods of time.

    3. Dont act surprise ive been pointing out th obvious flaw of the wii u double screen backed by reputable sources like youtube. Everything that ive been saying was confirmed by mr patcher. The only thing that surprises us is how the system hasnt tank being such a laughing stock. It is equivalent to saying he jaguar would succed but yet it failed becuase everybody knew it was a gimmick but when it shitendo oh knows they get a free pass. Fanboys are amazingly stupid

      1. What the hell are you talking about and how does it relate to my initial comment? Do you honestly think, it is a bad thing to ousource information to the Gamepad, that would otherwise cover parts of the graphics, or that you can manage inventory by a tap of your finger? As I said, even at the most basic level this is a good thing.. Like it is on the DS and 3DS.

      2. stopped reading at ‘reputable sources like youtube’
You realise anyone can upload a video to youtube so it’s just as a reputable source as fucking anything
I could say ‘wii u is the best’ and that’s just as reliable as youtube fucking idiot

    1. ….and some retards where born claiming they is always right, like that Aeolus retard for example.
If you don’t agree with him, you are a Nintendo fanboy witch makes no sense.

  13. He’s failing to take into account the differences between the Wii U and Wii. The Wii didn’t have a “hard core” controller with all the possible button combinations that nearly every “hardcore” PS3/360 game took advantage of. The classic controller and classic controller pro weren’t supported in games nearly as often, and even when they were, they were still lacking at least 2 buttons. The new pro controller does away with that concern, and even the gamepad allows for that control scheme. The touch screen will not be as “forced” as the “waggle” from the Wii, and it’s a very well proven concept that developers have had much more experience with, on the DS and 3DS platforms, vs the “brand new” motion controls. Besides, some people will be satisfied with just being able to play the game on the controller, and won’t expect every game to use it in some crazy way. Seeing how Resident Evil Revelations used the second screen shows how great it can be for 3rd person shooting titles, Mass Effect and Darksiders 2 show how RPG and action games can use it, Rayman/Mario show how platformers can use it, and ZombiU/COD:BO2 shows how FPS can use it. It could be a rear view mirror in a racing game. All those things are much better than “waggle”, even though personally I enjoyed “waggle” when it was used properly.

The fact that games had to be down ported also hurt the Wii, because that limited the amount of 3rd party games. Sure things like Madden and even COD were down ported, but many many other games were not, and some people just really care that much about graphics. That won’t be an issue, and even if PS4/720 blow it out of the water spec wise, the same graphics engines (unreal 3/4, Cry Engine 3, Frostbite 2, Fox Engine) can run on all 3, where the Wii couldn’t run Unreal Engine 3, Cry Engine 2 etc. so they won’t be down ports in the same regard Wii games were compared to PS3/360 titles.

All that, and the social/internet/tv aspects, for only $350 max? What’s not to love?

    1. I like how you didn’t acknowledge a single time Pachter’s main point in his rant. You instead talked about all these other things irrelevant to his point. Very nice.

      1. Actually the first part was spot on, patcher said it is like a DS but in fact it is not, the DS forces a second screen the gamepad screen can b turned off and not used at all which is the point patcher overlooked the 720/ps4 games can b ported because wii u will have the same button combinations which the wii did not control sceme wise, he just added even more proof saying the engines will b relevant as well, read carefully

      2. Do you know what counter points are? I did acknowledge what he said about the Wii U was going to be a failure. “DS like” controls and lack of 3rd party support. I said why those arguments are more or less invalid, and then stated why it will be a success. Great job reading though, you might want to go back to first grade and start over.

  14. This time around if third party publishers don’t put their big budget hits on the Nintendo they will go out of business, they will not be able to afford not to put their games on Wii U, the Wii U is going to dominate like the PS 2 or more so.

  15. Considering no one knows what the Wii U Gamepad is capable of yet besides Nintendo makes this irrelevant. Miyamoto would be LOLing.

  16. Weird… I remember dozens of news stating that Nintendo was having lots of support from third-parties, specially because they were working side to side with them to make games that could use the full potential of the hardware and GamePad’s exclusive features, without turning it into a gimmick. What took third-parties away from Wii was the lack of intelligent uses for it’s movement based controls, so, working together with Nintendo would sane that problem.

And what’s even more weird, I could swear paying $350 for a next generation console is way cheaper than paying $500 for a current gen one! Specially because Wii U will be competing against PS4 and Xbox 720 when they launch, so it is way more powerful than PS360!

And lastly, first you were supporting Wii U, and even got amazed at how much support from third-parties the Wii U was getting, and now you say they won’t get any? Seriously, Pachter, make up your mind! Will you give your true opinions, or give false biased opinions to try to hurt Nintendo’s market? Decide which one you’re taking and stick with it!

  17. He is clearly talking about anti nintendoism with in the industry well let them kill themselves wii kicked there ass wiiu will finish them of

  18. THE WII U IS A NEXT GENERATION CONSOLE!!! I am sick of it being compared to PS3/X360 all the time… But, it has something to do with the power probably not being that much more powerful than PS3(not confirmed how powerful it is yet, though), doesn’t it? Still…

  19. Tbh, I don’t really care if Pachter isn’t a fan of the Wii U.There’s gonna be people who may not want to support the Wii U for whatever reason, up to them.
However, I think he’s wrong about 3rd parties not wanting to support Wii U. From what I see, 3rd parties are pretty excited about the Wii U. Look at Ubisoft, look at Shinen. Look at all the upcoming titles that are coming for the Wii U from the respective studios. How can you think that 3rd parties wont support it? OK, perhaps some devs, like Crytek and id Software don’t seem as enthusiastic as some other developers, but they’re probably waiting to see how the Wii U will fair before putting their kind of content on it. After all, after the generation of the Wii I can understand why those two companies would think twice before putting a game like Crysis on a Nintendo system, but Nintendo is trying to show us that the Wii U can cater for gamers and I know that it can. So after some time, those studios that may not have been sure initially will probably be a bit more confident after seeing the success of the Wii U.

  20. How people especially most americans and europeans fail to realise how the Wii U is supposed to be is beyond me.
So stupid to understand a new entertainment system unless it comes to weapons.
I bet Patcher’s dad fought during WW2 and now holds a grudge on Nintendo cuz they are in Japan xD

  21. Must be very nice to live your life getting paid for wrong predictions.
I’d like to be an analyst.

Seriously, Wii U’s potential is PLAIN to see. The only people who don’t see it are the ones who just haven’t looked inside Wii U enough.

Which is not hardcore gamers’ case.
And certainly not third party developpers either.

I’m a Nintendo enthousiast and have been all my life, so I would say Wii U’s gonna rock the world’s socks, but I can’t predicti it for sure.

What I can assert for sure is this incredible potential.

Nintendo decided to innovate (once again) and not to just boost graphical renderings, and this is what might save console gaming from computer gaming: everyone has a computer in their household and you don’t need to buy a game-dedicated system to play COD or other “classical” videogames.

You will, however, need to buy this game-dedicated system to play Wii U games : Nintendo is ensuring its market, and any real analyst would’ve noticed that, instead of calling Wii U’s system risky.

  22. He only says what they tell him to say id love ti know who exactly it is I think ea are part of the conspiracy he is payed to do this by the dieing industry who hate nintendo

  23. If the Wiiu does well i think in the 4th year of its life a new Nintendo console will be in the working so the more powerful nextbox and ps4 will not be a issue for Nintendo because Nin console life is around 6 years or so. Like i said if the Wiiu does well thatbox and ps4 wont be a issue the end so he can say what he want

  24. Don’t listen to this dick head . How many developers have been praising the machine ????
It’s not just lifting your head up and down all the time , the wiiu does a billion times more than that . – The wiiu will be awesome , no doubt .

  25. Pachter should compare the Wii U’s price and to the other next gen consoles and not to the current gen. That’s like comparing the Wii’s price to that of PS2, XBOX and GameCube. And I don’t think Microsoft’s and Sony’s next gen console will be nearly as innovative as Wii U seeing as it had never been in the past. It’s okay for Pachter to have his own opinion but it should at least make sense.

  26. Hes wrong because Ubisoft has definitely fully backed wii u. and thats a good company to have on your side. this guy… I would seriously petition to get him fired from whatever job it is he thinks he does.

  27. Pachter does bring up some interesting points, but the Wiiu is developed with 3rd parties in mind. Just look at all the different control options Nintendo is giving developers. The Wii Remote with Nunchuck, The Wiiu pad with touch screen support and built in motion controls, and the Wiiu Pro Controller, which has the same look of a 360 pad. With this machine developers are no longer limited to to what the can develop, the have all the options they could ever want. They don’t even have to use the second screen on the Wiiu pad if they choose not to. The people that I know that didn’t own the Wii, their biggest complaints were always having to use motion controls and the graphics were not in HD. Nintendo has listened and fixed upon these complaints. Oh, and if you really think that the next generation of Xbox or Playstation is going to be anything other then a graphics upgrade then you better start analyzing a little better. The Wiiu will be the only system that will allow true innovation in gaming Next Gen.

  28. Nintendo has destroyed every gaming console company out of America, It has whooped microsoft americas most gramdized company on its home turf and city ( Seattle ). Understand this logic and you see where pachter is coming from.

    1. Finally pre-ordered the Delux edition. Hi everyone I have returned former xbox plaer here. True words there, the xbox sucks to me now.

  29. Also, this is why Nintendo created the Wii U pro controller (x-box like), so 3rd party developers don’t have to use the gamepad controller if they don’t want to. The Wii U will be fine.

  30. COD is on the Wii U, which other 3RD party giand remaining. EA is on with FIFA the main line FIFA. Ubisoft is practically living in Kyoto Japan, Capcom, Square enix are definitely showing up with the sinking Vitanic, Konami, Namco Bandai, cry Pachter cry.

  31. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY SO MANY WEBSITES/PEOPLE CARE WHAT HE THINKS… YOU DONT NEED TO PUBLISH AN ARTICLE EVERY TIME HE SAYS A WORD. NO ONE CARES!

  32. Someone tell Pachter there is more technology in the Wii U’s game pad alone than the PS3’s ( giant enemy crab, Ridge racer ) and xbox360( RROD, disk scratcher, paying for online that is free elsewhere ) combined. The Wii U’s game pad alone can play Trine 2 directors cut when both the PS3 and xbox360 cannot.

  33. we need to What JOSePh4

You know what nintendo fanboys, this is the first time I have heard patcher make valid points to back up his reasons for worrying/not liking the wii U, and he provides perfect reasons why. Stop being blind and saying”fuck patcher” because he actually backs up his reasons and this time they make perfect sense.

      1. we need to What JOSePh4

Contradicts? How? Please explain, it seems quite sound to me. Its not that I entirely agree wth him, but most of what he is saying here is exactly how I feel, but fanboys are going to twist his words.

        1. Go check his previous articles about the Wii U, which for a short period of time he said it’s a fantastic system and it is looking good because it has good 3rd party support. Then later he says the opposite.

That is what we call contradicting.

    1. They don’t, though.
His entire claim that third parties didn’t do so well on the DS was utter rubbish, and he’s comparing a controller to an entire hand-held system, and as a negative, simply because he has to shift his eyes a bit more to look at the screen in his hands.
Oh, the horror, he actually has to move his head to look at the screen! It’ll ruin everything and make it uncomfortable to play! /sarcasm
That’s not even taking into account the fact that the best uses for the screen so far have been for minimaps and organizing inventories, as well as for scanning things and aiming certain others.
I mean, seriously, he’s making too huge a deal over the space between screens and having to look further in order to look between them.
That’s not sensible, that’s rubbish talk from an analyst who is blatantly anti-Nintendo and has no business analyzing games in general, in any case.

      1. we need to What JOSePh4

I think what he’s trying to say is that thrid party games on the DS weren’t nearly as successful as a console 3rD party title. Some were, but a lot were never bought by nintendo fans because A they sucked, or B its something that not all nintendo fans want. But yes I agree, some 3rd party DS games sold a LOT

      2. Plus it’s not like you HAVE to move your head, you can always just move the gamepad in front of your line of sight while holdin it then bring it back down to look at the Tv; not everyone thinks of these things.

        1. yeah it is still awkward but it can work if implemented properly. much like zombie u thats pretty awesome use of the gamepad right there.

      3. Of course he’s comparing the Wii U and the DS; they’re virtually the same concept in terms of dual screen, where one is a touchscreen.

And whether you’ve already playing some games looking at both screens or not, the fact is we only have a handful of games to play with so far. What about the future? Eventually different games will have to emerge. What if those games show how difficult it is to look at both screens? You can’t just say, “Then they can just program it for one screen!” because that defeats the purpose of having two screens in the first place!

  34. *shrugs* ok then let’s wait til the ps4 and 720 release, then we’ll see what’s the cheapest of the 3 consoles since you’re still comparing it to the ps3 and 360. And about the developers thing, maybe the third party support didn’t do so well because they didn’t put effort into it. There’s a such thing as a lazy developer. I do understand Patcher’s concern as well as not really liking the system but you can’t blame the system for not having quality third party games or support. We’ll see when it launches though because… again this is all speculation.

  35. No matter what, I will always choose Nintendo first untill they die or someone else comes up with a machine that’s better in all areas than Nintendo.
Still I would buy a Nintendo if that was to happen.

  36. His points are easily refutable in the future, but for now, they’re quite significant. Nintendo’s audience this time around is especially important, as they are now catering to both the casual and hardcore audience with the Wii U. Given the lack of loyalty the casual audience had with the Wii, the hardcore Nintendo fans were left to pick up the steam with Wii game sales. And they failed miserably. Each Wii game DID sell truckloads, but they certainly did not sell as much as what some PS3 or 360 games sold. The fact is, a good game like Zack and Wiki should have sold well, but Nintendo fans often buy only Nintendo first party games, which would harm the sales of other good third party games on the Wii (this actually did happen; go look it up). Nintendo appears to be fixing that problem with the Wii U by attempting to gain the Wii’s casual audience’s loyalty while simultaneously attracting new audiences and the incumbent hardcore audience. They could easily sell the world with the Wii U in the next few years, but they might not as well.

The multi screen issue I personally don’t have a problem with, as I actually like the idea of looking at different screens while playing. That and I also multitask.

  37. Sounds to me like the dude can’t seem to make up his mind on nintendo. trashing and then complementing and then trashing nintendo again.

  38. well… i think the wii u is pretty much safe now…
This guy tend to be totally wrong most of the time, (and thats quite funny taking into account he always make really valid points)
For example he said that the 3ds would sell like pancakes from start and it was a disaster launch with unexpected pricecuts lol..

  39. Most new things aren’t natural at first, but get better with time. Since all we’re doing is the oh so extraneous act of moving your eyes up and down, I’m sure we’ll get used to it.

Also, if developers (and patcher) can’t se the advantages of having that second screen and how nice it will be to have it as a supplement to the games (and even the main focus in some games), well then they’re either not thinking hard enough, or they’re lying to themselves because they don’t like to try new things.

And quit bitching about the price. It’s not going to be competing with the 360 and PS3, it’s going to be competing with the PS4 and 720. So yeah, it is priced fairly.

  40. He has a point. Especially in a recession recovery. This console doesn’t have the same “umph!” the Wii had in terms of marketability and price point favourability.

I don’t think it will “fail”, but it certainly won’t be the monster success that Nintendo fanboys think it will be. Besides, Wii sold 90 million, but software sales and replay values were terrible. And that’s what counts. Having 90 millions Wii’s out there but having half of them (or more) sitting in a closet due to poor third party/hardcore game support isn’t good. My Wii sat in the closet for 4 years until I downloaded a few Virtual Console games that I didn’t like playing on my SNES/Genesis/Nintendo 64 emulators. That’s really the strongest selling point the Wii had for avid, non-casual gamers. Because the Wii games themselves just weren’t great by many gamers’ standards/tastes.

  41. Let me give my thoughts, get ready for a LONG post:

QUOTE: “I’m not a fan of the console. Essentially I look at the GamePad and the television, the two screens, and I see a DS that’s disaggregated. It’s very similar to playing a DS game. The difference is, with the DS your line of sight is on both screens. It’s easy to toggle back and forth. With the GamePad on the Wii U you have to look back and forth, and that’s not natural.”

MY THOUGHTS: This is true, it is different than the DS/3DS screen alignment, but I believe this is only an opinion. The gameplay can differ from player to player. Most people have a hard time playing standard games with one TV because of motion sickness or something similiar.

QUOTE: “I understand the console is going to be way more powerful than the DS. It’s entirely possible you’ll get great experiences that are console-like but take advantage of the touch screen. But I think most developers look at the GamePad as either a gimmick or very DS like, and they don’t want to incorporate the touchscreen features because the games aren’t any better for them.”

MY THOUGHTS: How does he exactly know if the Gamepad will be just a gimmick? We do not know until we see more games come out for the Wii U in the future. People thought the DS was a gimmick until sales went up and excellent games came out for it (It had to have excellent games, or else it would not have sold well). Personally, I see the Gamepad as a great addition to standard games. If developers make the games right and not throw things togethr for quick cash, the Gamepad can be really useful. But we will all have to be patient and see the final results of the console.

QUOTE: “Nintendo will pioneer, they’ll do a far better job than anybody of exploiting the console and the control scheme, and I think others will learn from them,” he added.

MY THOUGHTS: I completely disagree with the DS not doing well with 3rd party games. I could name dozens of titles that did well, but I don’t want this post to be too big. As a matter of fact, the DS had more 3rd party support than the Wii.

QUOTE: “They sold 90 million Wiis; it’s certainly less than 90 million hardcore fans. I would guess it’s between seven and ten million, and it could be 20 million but they don’t all have $350. When the hardcore fans are satisfied, I think sales are going to drop precipitously because I don’t think the thing is priced competitively with what most people think is a comparable console, Xbox 360 or PS3.”

    MY THOUGHTS:
    Xbox 360 Launch price: $400-$500
    Playstation 3 Launch price: $500-$600

The Wii U is an HD-system with graphics either on-par or better than the previous consoles, it has a touch-screen game controller, the Gamepad, and it offers many other features that may raise the cost of it up. To me, the system is fairly priced. I honestly thought it would be $400 or more, but $300-$350 is a good price to put it.

QUOTE: “I think that this thing, rather than launching and being the cheapest of the three consoles, which the Wii was, and very novel because no one had ever seen motion control before, this console is launching and it’s the most expensive of the three consoles and it’s not novel because it’s very much like the DS.”

MY THOUGHTS: Like I said in the previous thought, the Wii U system is not going to be cheap, it offers a lot of unique features you won’t find on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Plus, it can be considered “next-gen” since the Wii was with the 360 and PS3; so the Wii U does not have to compete with 360 or PS3, in my opinion. Plus, I don’t believe Nintendo is directing competing with anyone to begin with since they are doing things differently, so it is hard to compare (the only thing I say is their online services).

I wouldn’t say the Wii U being similar to the DS is a bad thing, since the DS was a successful system. We will have to wait and see before we can make final judgments. Personally, I like a “DS-like” setup. More screens and a touch screen gives games more options and customization.

  42. Danielle Antoinette Howard

Have you seen Patcher? He’s so hot!! I’m not even kidding; I would do Patcher if he would have me. That’s right. I wanna mate with Patcher :)

  43. Pachter is simply saying something outrageous to get reactions, views, and his name out, ect. It works to, because everytime he says something Nintendo fans go crazy, and blow up the comment section. If you want people to stop talking about Pachter.

    1. Dont click the article
    2. Dont comment
    3. I know Im commenting but someone has to make you people realize something thats common sense.

  44. Pingback: Michael Pachter Rants About How He’s “Not a Fan” of Wii U

  45. This is just funny to me, I am not a sony or xbox or even nintendo fan boy. But to the say that no one did well on the DS the highest selling console of all time…is just pure malarkey ..lol seriously check the numbers. The wii u and developers have already stated it will do well, third party support.. uhhmm look at the list of launch titles…” THEY ARE 97 PERCENT THIRD PARTY TITLES.. and BIG NAMES” Pachter needs to be fired. Just for his lack of logic and understanding of consoles. MY only qualm is I wish they system came with at least 64 gigs of harddrive.. my phone does that .. my console should match it.
