Nintendo: ‘Wii U GamePad Has All The Functions Of A Handheld’

The Wii U GamePad has “all the functions of a handheld,” according to Nintendo. The new controller boasts several features, including a 6.2 inch touchscreen, traditional button controls, two analog sticks, a front-facing camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, motion control and rumble support. Unlike handhelds, however, the Wii U GamePad is not a portable; people cannot carry and play it wherever or whenever.

  1. Christmas 2012 is going to be amazing. My parents spend £150 on me plus Staff discount where they work, gotta pay £90 towards Wii U. But cannot wait!

  2. I’m telling you people, we’re looking at the FUTURE of GAMING right here. I simply CANNOT wait to get my hands on one. Hopefully at launch, God willing. :D

    1. Will any of the “Xbox” Turtle Beach headsets work? I know they have two types listed on the site but I am interested in if the Xbox versions would also work.

      1. i beleive you just plug it right into the controllers headphone jack, so yeah, im pretty sure your turtle beaches will work, maybe not the mic, but the controller has a mic on it so no biggy.

        1. Xbox has 7.1 surround sound wireless with Bluetooth with voicemorphing and they make a stereo headset. Not even a 5.1 surround….really?
What will the top of the line headset be? I don’t want another headbanger.

          1. well, with most turtle beaches, they also made to work with the pc. so you can just plug it into the headphone jack of your computer, why not on the controller itself? and with a headset all you really need is 5.1, since its all crammed in together.

          2. I’m sure you could use them as headphones if they are compatible with standard headphone jacks but you may have to settle with the built in microphone in the controller.

  4. This is stupid! Firstly, yeah it has all of the functions of a handheld… Except you can’t fucking take it anyway. Also, nice way to continuing confusing people, Nintendo, people don’t need more convincing that it might be a handheld but isn’t.

  5. I wonder what Nintendo will do for the next generation…

Seeing as the Wii U/Nintendo 3DS do serve well for this generation, it is becoming apparent that the Wii U is more of a shift in bringing both portable and home console gaming together in some regard (and a whole bunch of other things together too, of course :P).

Perhaps Nintendo will be creating a true, hybrid gaming entertainment system next generation that blends both of the two gaming fields and puts them together on one console? It’s certainly doable, so I won’t be surprised to see such a device made in the next 6+ years. :D

Oooooh! I’M SO EXCITED!!! The holiday season can’t come soon enough!!

I think this launch is the first where I want to buy almost EACH AND EVERY GAME that comes out with the Wii U. I’m only getting New Super Mario Bros. U at launch, but Nintendo Land is bundled with the Deluxe Wii U, so those two games can keep me for a while. :)

Definitely getting Paper Mario: Sticker Star for the Nintendo 3DS when it comes out though! I haven’t bought any games for my little Cosmo yet. :3

      1. It’s times like this I wish someone created a sarcasm font for the internet, every passing day someone on some site becomes more desperate on for the sarcastica font.

  6. it’s going to be interesting to see how many people try to resist the kings this time around the u u is easily the greatest console ever created

    1. I think you’re a little confused. This is a Wii U, not a 3DS. The Wii U is a console, not a handheld, and has not been released yet.
