Team Ninja: ‘Consoles Are Not Going Away Any Time Soon’

While some mobile developers claim that video game consoles are becoming less popular, Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi says consoles will be around for quite some time. Hayashi is excited for Nintendo’s upcoming console, Wii U, and thinks that it could get people interested in console gaming again.

“I don’t think consoles are going to disappear from gaming. You still have millions of people playing videogames with a controller on a box in front of the TV. Just look at Call of Duty, for example: it’s everywhere. There are millions of people playing it.

“I think people will continue to play games, and as long as the cost of development stays sustainable, and people continue to buy traditional games, then we’ll be here. If only one game sells everything, it will ruin the gaming and console industries completely.

“I think you can compare it to movies, People still go to the cinema after all this time. I don’t know how long cinemas have been around but it’s not like cinemas are completely gone and everyone is watching movies on their TV or smartphone.

“Yes, you have those new mediums, but the old guy is still there – and I think it’s going to be like that with consoles. I think they will be around for quite a while.”

        1. im not hating on PC gamers, im hating on PC whores like this fool that goes on the internet and bash console gamer.

  1. Well, of course. Consoles are much more accessible for playing games; There are plenty of people who don’t really mix well with PC gaming.

  2. Honestly, I couldnt have said it better myself. I cannot see myself succumbing to smartphone/tablet gamin as long as consoles are dishin out more great games each year. With Micro/Sony/Ninten comin up with new things per generation, I’m positive that we will have console gamin even after I’m 6 feet under.

        1. Nintendo makes what are at first seen as radical ways to play mainstream, and then the others try and emulate it…On the other hand, something like HD gaming was anything but radical, it was the next logical step.

  3. And this is why you don’t make super powered consoles that cost 600 to buy and expect people to come with you. Gaming needs to advance at a slow, steady and affordable pace. Nintendo always knew that. The other two are learning the hard way.

As long as console gaming stays affordable and accessible to the average consumer it will always have a place. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. Thank you and well said!!! I am a strong believer in this aswell!!!
Do sony and microsoft have the balls to make consoles powerfull enough to double , triple maybe even quadruple current development costs ????

Games are already too expensive to develop on current gen consoles , so why would anyone who wants to make money start threatening themselves by bumping up costs ???
Ps4 $399 – wiiU – $299/350 – Durango – $349 . <— that is the only way those consoles can take off and create an installed base rapidly.

        1. Your point ????? I am a fan of Nintendo yes , would you like a cookie ?? I was agreeing with the statement above that Sony and Microsofts Next gen Systems shouldn’t be too powerfull or expensive for the sake of the whole industry. If they are too powerfull a LOT of developers are either gunna suffer or simply wont have the funds to utilize the systems. If the systems are too expensive (like the ps3 was this gen at launch) they won’t sell…..

I have a ps3 and a 360 and a wii. But for the ps4 , 720 and wiiu , it would be Nice if they were all similarly powerfull like the Ps2 , GC , XB gen….. level playing field.

Simply expressing my concern for the future of gaming including Sony and Microsoft , mainly sony. I think the wiiu is perfectly priced , perfect for DEV costs , perfect for innovation .

If the ps4 comes out at $600 – Sony will collapse . That’s not healthy for the industry is it ?

        2. What is your view on the future of games development costs ???

Obviously we all want the highest production values possible , but if those values become too high the industry won’t be sustainable and smaller developers will be suphocated without a chance…

Would you like the ps4 to be $600 and stupidly powerfull or $350 and decently powerfull ????

          1. Dude, seriously. One question mark is enough. It’s driving me bonkers if people do that, and I bet I’m not the only one..

            1. Does it really fucking matter at all how many question marks I use ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

      1. revolution i need you to re register me cuz my original 3ds got stolen,my games and friends got deleted, then i got it back on monday after buying an XL and getting everything back, not last monday but 2 weeks ago :)

  5. As long as there’s market for a product, it won’t disappear. And we are the guarantee that this market will continue!

    1. After dropping NG3 on us Nintendo fans , It would be an arsehole move if they just didn”t give us Z . It’s 99% unless Inafune feels the need to shit all over his native Nintendo .

      1. Yeah. I mean i cant imagine it not coming to the WiiU, the fan base is there, Nintendo are in good partnerships with Capcom, Team Ninja and Platinum Games.

          1. Yes there is? All the preorders, and Nintendo fans, and people interested in it. Thats fan base, thats the consumer.
And besides, all the companies i said are on board, regardless.

            1. Pre orders dont guarantee success. That is a fact. Don’t get me wrong, I’m getting a Wii U but I don’t understand how you can only game on one console.

            2. yes and no, what gamer said was the truth; there is a fanbase for wii u but that does not = sales. There is no consumers for wii u YET because is not out. Those pre orders can equal big consumers/fanbase.

  6. So I just played the wii u at my local gamestop (it was awesome). that’s the good news. The bad news is that when I asked the manager if gamestops were doing midnight releases for wii u he replied I don’t think so…very troubling to say the least I hope this isn’t the case!

    1. Tried a demo unit Wednesday, didnt give two fucks about not knowing about online when I play Rayman legends haha. The Nintendo Direct is coming any day now. I’m betting on Sunday. I just want shit to be there day one so I’m not downloading shit at 2a.m. because the eshop just released 3months later like the 3ds.

  7. Consoles will probably always be the chosen way to game, because that is their sole purpose and nothing else will offer more for less. The only problem is Sony increased the cost of development with PS3 and the cost of the console was too high and games even went up to sixty dollars. Sony did this to try to put Nintendo out of business.

  8. Consoles are still selling hundreds of millions of units each generation.

If you think they are going away you are crazy. Casual gamers don’t buy games and core gamers don’t play on tablets or phones.

    It won’t happen, ever.
