Miyamoto Talks Zelda By Retro, Online Gaming, And Miiverse

Online gaming publication Game Reactor were able to speak to Miyamoto after the acclaimed developer received his prestigious Príncipe de Asturias award in Communication and Humanities. During the discussion Miyamoto talked about Retro Studio’s handling the Zelda franchise as well as online gaming and Miiverse. Here’s a snippet of what he had to say.

  • Premise: almost every Wii U user will already have Wiimote, Nunchuk and even WM+ – this gives freedom to devs. IR alternate pointing to both screens highly possible
  • Miyamoto-san doesn’t think they fell behind with online, but now is the right moment and you ‘have’ to be online with the Wii U.
  • Retro qualified for Zelda game, but being in America would leave less-dependent games for them (story, design Japan-only)
  • They’ll encourage handwritten chatting with Miiverse
  • 2 current goals are: own creation and creating teams which doesn’t need him.
  • iPad Mini screen size is another indication they took the right path with GamePad design

          1. Still isn’t something that I would WANT to pay for, really. Admittedly, I do have XBL Gold but only because that’s the only way I can play online.

            PlayStation and PC do cross-game chat for free. I don’t see why Nintendo can’t either. =p

    1. Nintendo actually confirmed that you won’t be paying for their online service not too long ago. However, you might have to pay for exclusive content or modes (no surprise there)

    1. Except for those of us in Europe, we have 33 days to wait. Still, I feel bad for Japanese gamers – they have even longer to wait.

        1. Sorry for the english, its not my native language

          oh, a brazilian like me! yeah… we’ll have to wait till 2013 AND the Wii U will be probably priced for R$ 1,400~1,900 D:

          1. I think you´re right about the prices. As for the time, I won´t be surprised to find some units in Sao Paulo or in those big stores like Fnac.

  1. I really hope Retro is making a new Star Fox game. I would love to see what they can bring to that series, and if they can revolutionize it like they did Metroid. Leave Zelda to the Japanese team. I’m sure the next Zelda game will be the biggest Zelda ever. I hope they keep the look of that tech demo, it was fucking gorgeous. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. I think it was confirmed that the next Zelda would use the same art style as Skyward Sword. I’m kind of disappointed that Nintendo wouldn’t let Retro do the story and design of a Zelda game if they made one.

      1. Well, when you think about it, Zelda isn’t really like any of Nintendo’s other franchises. It has a really deep storyline, it continues to evolve in terms of its design with each new iteration–whether by game design or the overall art style of the game. These are two main elements that characterize each Zelda game and has them stand on their own merits.

        Other than that, however, I cannot see why Retro Studios wouldn’t want to work on it either way. Retro has shown how much they want to work on one. They should be allowed to work on Majora’s Mask for the Wii U, at the very least. Seeing how well they handled the Prime trilogy, they need to bring their expertise to the other Nintendo franchises too (I still want a Metroid from them for 3DS or Wii U though).

        As for Star Fox, on the other hand, Platinum Games has expressed how much they want to work on a game in the franchise for the Wii U/3DS. If this is really so, then I hope we eventually see them become one of the companies under Nintendo’s first-party hood. Nintendo could have two VERY awesome companies under their belt (Retro and Platinum). :3

        This next generation of gaming is going to be totally different than the last ones. We see indie gaming developers rushing to get their hands all over the Wii U and 3DS, Miiverse is going to be the first, fully-dedicated social network platform for gaming, third-party developers are beginning to bring their exclusives over to the Wii U in droves, and we are becoming more connected to other players in more engaging ways (whether through 3DS StreetPass/SpotPass or the Wii U and its Miiverse functionality, both of which are features of the all-encompassing Nintendo Network).

        All I hope is that we eventually get the full Miiverse suite on the 3DS. If not, it would be nice to see it on the next dedicated handheld from Nintendo. I really think Nintendo has their fingers on something special here, and I can’t wait to be one of the first to see it grow into a universally recognized gaming platform. :D

        1. You forgot about the fact that Platinum Studios want to revive Nazo no Muresame-jo (The Mysterious Murasame Castle) as well. This was also mentioned by Hideki Kamiya on his Twitter.

        2. You do realize that the super awesome Majora’s Mask video circulating the interweb is fake right? Even though I love it and it is very well made, it’s FAN made. Props to that guy that made it though, it turned out awesome.

      2. I remember when that leak came through and everyone threw a fit because the art style was supposed to be SS style. SS was gorgeous, and full of life and colour, but the WiiU Zelda will be like Mario 64 to Mario Galaxy, same artstyle (ish), but daaaaaaaaaaaayyyym

    2. Tech demo was basically HD Twilight Princess. Not to mention it was hardly the best exhibition of a true HD Zelda game. Just uprezzing everything should not be good enough. The art style needs to have true “HD-ness”

      1. It looked like Twilight Princess in a native HD resolution? Not sure if serious. Twilight Princess was just used as the basic style for the tech demo and a lot of people do want it to look like that. Personally, I want a more Ocarina of Time-esque look over a Twilight Princess-esque look on the Wii-U but that’s just me.

        1. This is just me, but i like the mix of anime cel shade from wind waker and realistic art style of twilight princess in skyward sword and I’d be interested to see that in HD

    1. Great job! Don’t forget about taxes though.
      Here’s a tip: If they ask you for warrenty, say no because if you register your Wii U on a club account, you will get your warrenty extended.(with no extra charge.)

  2. Retro just needs to concentrate on Metroid and Donkey Kong. Unless Starfox gets a new play mechanic, I think it’s stale.

    1. Agreed, I think Starfox is stale as well…I am really hoping for a reboot of Earthbound from Retro, I think that would be epic!!

  3. We all want Retro to work on an already existing franchise (Metroid, Donkey Kong, Star Fox etc.) But what if “the game we all want them to make” is something completely original that we didn’t even know we wanted? An original IP from Retro could turn out being as great as all the other Nintendo franchises.

    1. I actually hope its a new IP, although i’ll evidenrly hype myself up for Star Fox or Metroid, and be annoyed we dont see it xD

    1. He isn’t leaving though :). I think he want his own team for new IP’s and 3d marios and zelda etc. And then he want’s other teams to look after his franchises , maybe make 3ds zelda spin offs and 2d marios , other marios that sort of thing :)

  4. My E3 2013 prediction for Nintendo. (fairly reasonable)

    -3d Mario game for wii u (2013)
    -Zelda wii u (2014)
    -metroid wii u (2014)
    -mario kart wii u (2013)
    -star fox wii u (2013)
    -f-zero for both wii u and 3ds (2014)
    -Kirby 3ds (2013)
    -donkey kong 3ds (2014)
    -Mario and sonic winter Olympics 2014 for both wii u and 3ds (2013)
    -Mario party 10 for wii u (2013)

    Mario party I kind of doubt. Though I think at least half of these are possible, especially Mario,Zelda and Mario and sonic winter Olympics.

            1. Not me. I think the vita’s cross play is genius :S . I have never said otherwise. I have expressed the fact that I think Sony’s Cross control play is a rip off of the wiiu. As soon as Sony saw E32011 they hooked their vita up to the ps3..

              I like the sahred data and all that jazz between vita and ps3 , that’s just clever.

              1. Hooking a hand held up to a console is nothing new, remember that Final Fantasy game for GC that you could play with the GBA? That shit was fun as hell. Vita+PS3 is kind of a direct Wii U ripoff though. Except, is the Vita motion sensitive? Accellerometer and all that? But wouldn’t it be awesome if the Wii U controller had CD Rom slot on it somewhere and made the Wii U portable? I think we’re still a few yards off from that one, but can you imagine?

                1. the Vita indeed has barometers and accelerometers, granted it might not be a PS3 six-axis, it is def. better than the 3DS to say the least. It is really stupid of Sony to say PSV + PS3 = Wii U cause its not true. While it is arguable that the Sony combo could be better, it by no means make me assume the Wii U won’t be short of spectacular, cause I know it will be awesome. Just, for me, the games aren’t there yet. At best I can see me getting 2 games aside from the included Nintendo Land and thats pushing it cause those games are something that cry out “must have” but rather stand out from the rest of the ports or other exclusives that don’t concern me.

    1. Here’s the ones I can see happening from your list:

      ~~~Shigeru Miyamoto comes out on stage to announce the new layout of Nintendo EAD. Perhaps when he will retire?
      ~~~He will announce that the last 3D Mario game that he will ever work on will be for the Wii U and the last Zelda game will also be the one that comes later on Wii U (not Majora’s Mask remake).
      – 3D Mario Game for Wii U (2013)
      – The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask for Wii U (2014)
      – Mario Kart for Wii U (2014)
      ~~~ Announcement that Platinum Games is joining up with Nintendo, a la Retro Studios.
      – Star Fox for Wii U (2014) – Developed by Platinum Games
      – Bayonetta 2 (2013)
      – The Wonderful 101 (2013) – I highly doubt this game won’t be pushed back because it didn’t get a strong showing for the Wii U as of yet. If not, I’d like to see a Nintendo Direct aimed at showcasing its features because there hasn’t been much news regarding this game since last E3 (other than the name change from Project P-100).
      ~~~ Scott Mofitt (is that how you spell his name?) will come on stage to talk about all things Nintendo 3DS.
      ~~~ New games announced are as follows.
      – Kirby for the Nintendo 3DS (2013)
      – Donkey Kong 64 3D for the Nintendo 3DS (2013 or Early 2014)
      – Wave Race for the Nintendo 3DS (2014)
      ~~~ Masahiro Sakurai comes on stage to discuss SSB with Namco Bandai representative after a trailer showcases Super Smash Bros. “Universe” (what rumors suggests it to be named).
      – Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS specifically shown in full and announced for release in 2014.
      – Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U is still heavily under-development, but will go into full-production with the entire staff after work on the Nintendo 3DS version of the game is finished.
      ~~~ Namco Bandai representative leaves stage.
      – Kid Icarus: Uprising HD announced for the Wii U (2013 or Early 2014)
      ~~~ Reggie comes back on stage to summarize the information and leave everyone with one last surprise.
      – New Nintendo Land Attractions DLC (2013) – After E3, new attractions in Nintendo Land will be downloadable (either for free or paid DLC). These will be free for anyone who has a Deluxe Digital Promotion by purchasing the Wii U Deluxe.
      – States that more new features of the Wii U and 3DS will be further detailed in their own separate conferences held at different times during E3 2013. Nintendo will use developer roundtable to showcase new Nintendo Land DLC, announce more new surprises (quite possibly an F-Zero for Wii U if that’s even possible at this point in time), and address any questions about the Wii U or 3DS afterwards. Third-party developers will have their time to shine in Nintendo’s respective Wii U and 3DS conferences.

      —–

      Those are my E3 predictions. To me, they sound more like what Nintendo would do.

      Not trying to sound harsh here, but a lot of your predictions that were thrown out there into the open sound to ambitious to come true. Even my predictions above are a little TOO ambitious for one E3 showing, but there’s a clearer likelihood of the things I said coming true, as they have either been confirmed to be in development or mentioned by Nintendo prior to me posting this.

      Mario Party, on the other hand, I would say to wait for an announcement later in 2013 or early 2014. The same goes for Rhythm Heaven. As for Mario and Sonic, London Olympics was already confirmed a while ago to be the last game in that trilogy of Mario and Sonic games. SEGA has already stated they want to take the series in a new direction, and I hope that that means Nintendo and SEGA will FINALLY give us a full 3D action adventure-type game with Mario and Sonic characters already.

      Metroid is on rocky ground–same as F-Zero. Both of their latest entries were also one of the weakest in their franchises–as sad as it is for me to admit, as they both are one of my favorite Nintendo franchises of all-time (I love Metroid more than I do Zelda, no joke). It is unrealistic to ask for both on the same year. Nintendo should commission SEGA to help out with cutscenes and music for F-Zero. As for Metroid, let Retro Studios take the helm with overall story and gameplay direction (most game design will be handled by them in other words) and Team Ninja contribute to combat, physics, and other mechanics used in game by Samus and her arsenal of weapons and power-ups. This would help satisfy both companies seeing as both would like to work on another Metroid game. As for whether its 2D, 3D, or a hybrid of both, WHO CARES!? All we need is another Metroid and F-Zero again. Who cares if it’s for the Wii U or 3DS, 3D or 2D, whatever. As long as we get another one that doesn’t have Samus look like anything less than a kick-ass bounty hunter (see Metroid: Other M), then we certainly shouldn’t be complaining about format. >.>

      I will jump head over heels if everything ends up becoming true for what I just said. In fact, I will scream like a girl so loud that everyone across the states will hear me (because it’s GONNA be posted on YouTube), AND I will post a video of me being an Overly Attached Nintendo Fanboy. I’m not joking, either…

        1. Yeah, the trailer may be synonymous for both the Wii U and 3DS versions, but I think we would only get the demo showing of the 3DS version. I can’t imagine the Wii U version being ready for showing then. XD

          If really lucky, it would be great to get those demos on the show floor.

          I plan on going to E3 2013 next year, so I should probably go ahead and get my tickets as soon as possible. lol

      1. I love it. It’s exactly how I imagined except Return to the Murasame Castle should be one the list as a 2013 wWii U announcement. It’s because Hideki Kamiya of Platinum Studios expressed interest in a Murasame Castle reboot in his Twitter along with Star Fox. Takamaru deseeves another game since Nintendo went out of their way to put a Murasame Castle based minigame in Nintendo Land and he’s the most requested retro newcomer for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS.

      2. Retro is doing starfox not Platinum. Majoras Mask for Wii U? Uhhh no. Miaymoto wont talk about retiring he said last year he is not even close to being old enough to retire lol.

        1. Thats what I was confused about. was he talking about Majoras Mask HD on Wii U or a sequel to Majoras Mask on Wii U. I personally dont want either of those. I hated Majoras Mask.

      3. I don’t really care either, I just want a good Metroid game. Also, don’t think anything is too ambitious. Before E3 2011 I was thinking about if Nintendo made a Luigi’s Mansion 2 and we all know how that turned out :)

  5. IR alternate pointing to both screens highly possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as gamers and informed nintendo fans the fact you all haven’t jumped on this one INSULTS Mii!!!!!!!!!

    this is were the real clever and core gaming comes into play and this is EXACTLY THE SET UP I WANT FOR CORE FPS AND 3RD PERSON

    a in game screen and a tactile screen and both interactive via a wii remote and no picking the gamepad up UNLIMITED AND ADVANCED CORE GAMING CONTROLS FOR MAN GAMERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    when the wiiu gamepad rumors started its the first thing i thought of IMAGINE THE SECOND SCREEN AT THE BASE OF THE TV SET AND YOU REMOTE AT IT LIKE THE TV

    SURLY THATS WHAT YOU ALL THOUGHT ISN’T THAT WHAT BEING A CORE GAMER IS THE CUTTING EDGE OF GAME TECH !!!!!!!! please tell mi you did or i loose faith

    I DO WONDER ABOUT OTHER GAMERS AT TIMES SURLY THIS SHIT AND WAY OF THINKING IS SECOND NATURE TO US

    LOL AT A DUALSHOCK IS CORE GAMING LOL

    IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITY WITH PES (NOT FIFA BECAUSE EA WILL NEVER INNOVATE) IMAGINE THE FPS POSSIBILITY THE 3RD PERSON THE DUAL VIEW THE HUB THE MAPS THE CHANGE IN CLASS ALL IN REAL TIME ALL VIA A WII REMOTE AND MAYBE SOME ADDED VOICE CONTROLS

    SAY CLASS 1 OR CLASS 2 ETC TO CHANGE CLASS IN COD NO PAUSING AND NO BUTTON PUSHING ALL POINTING JUST CARRY ON PLAYING AND SAY A WORD PRESTO THE MIC HEARS YOU AND CHANGES THE CLASS YOU DIE PRESTO NEW CLASS

    IMAGINE PES WII U WITH ITS ALL READY ONLY NEXT GEN FOOTBALL SET UP VS PS3 ANDS X360 ON WII CONTROL ALL 11 PLAYERS WITH RTS MOUSE POINTER AND TRADITIONAL CONTROLS TAKING THE ART OF FOOTBALL AND THE TEAM PLAY AND THE INDIVIDUAL PLAYER PLAY TO NEW HEIGHTS NOW IMAGINE THAT IN HD BUT WITH THE SECOND SCREEN ACTING AS THE TACTICS MANAGERS SCREEN AND SIMPLY POINTING AT IT AND VOICE COMMANDING TO IT

    THAT WOULD TAKE WII PES TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

    REMINDER TO X360 AND PS3 FANS THE WAY YOU PLAY FIFA AND PES = THE WAY IT WAS PLAYED ON A MEGA DRIVE AND A PS1 TIME TO EVOLVE YOU SO CALLED CORE GAMERS LOL AT YOUR WORLD VIEW !!!!!!!!!!

    PES WII IS THE ONLY NEXT GEN FOOTBALL GAME IN EXISTENCE AND THATS A FACT

    AND WI REMOTE AND NUNCHCUK IS THE ONLY NEXT GEN FPS CONTROL IN EXISTENCE LOL AT TWIN STICKS FPS

    COMBINING THIS WITH A SECOND POINT AT SCREEN IS DS meets wii = HEAVEN

    ARE YOU CORE WELL PROVE IT START SALIVATING OVER THIS AMAZING IDEA THAT REAL CORE GAMERS WILL EMBRACE AND LOVE

    COUGH COUGH ZOMBI U YOU SERIOUSLY NEED THIS SET UP MAINTAIN THE RUCKSACK IDEA ETC BUT BLEND IT WITH WM+ POINTING AND TRUE WII REMOTE FPS CONTROLS

    TAKES THE GAME TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL BUT LIKE EA I DONT EXPECT UBISOFT TO GET IT !!

    i do not want to twin anlog core games its out of date old and darn stupid and the camera moves like robo cops head give wii wm+ wii remote pointer and nunchuck then give me the gampad as a DS like second screen come voice command video chat interface

    black ops 2 wiiu is already doing this but im not sure on the wii remote pointing i think you have to phyically pick up the game pad in game to use its hub map class change abilitys i hope not i want to point at it not put the wii remote and chuck down then oick up the gamepad to interact THAT DEFEATS THE OBJECTIVE please make it remote interactive tryarck

    if you havent noticed yet CORE GAMER fit with this poster lol at those THINKING THERE CORE

  6. If Miyamoto mentions it at least two times, then it’s probably true.

    Retro for Zelda confirmed.

    It’s either that or they’re now at the “very strongly considering it” point.

  7. I see that Retro Studios will be handling The Legend of Zelda title for the Wii U. 2 years ago, we have seen the Zelda demo powered by the Wii U. Although the HD resolution was in 720p, it STILL looks incredibly beautiful in detail. And according to rumors, we’ve heard that Retro Studios are working on a graphics engine on up-coming Wii U titles (click on this link– http://gengame.net/2012/09/rumor-retro-studios-is-working-on-game-engines-for-wii-u/ ). If that rumor is indeed true, we’ll be the first to see Retro’s engine on a new Zelda title.

  8. Can’t wait to resell my wii u’s, dude at the GS is going to let me even pick them up two days early so I can ship them out ASAP. All these people ready to py double and pay all my Christmas bills.
