Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has weighed in on tonight’s NPD results. Pachter says that overall Wii U software sales were abysmal, with only New Super Mario Bros U selling a meaningful amount of units. No dedicated Wii U or Nintendo 3DS games made the top ten software charts in the US during November.
Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter deemed the November sales results — a record 12 months of declines — as “worse than I expected.”
The culprit, he says, was Wii U hardware sales, which came in about $50 million below expected, and sales of Nintendo handhelds, the DS and 3DS. “Wii U hardware was sold out, we checked, so it’s a supply issue,” he says. But Wii U software sales “was abysmal, only Super Mario sold any meaningful units.”
That might, and don’t quote me on this, might be because nobody bought games the first half of the month other than halo 4 and bo2 which weren’t on the wii u at that point. And then who would buy a $60 game and $350 console when games were sold so cheaply on cyber monday/black friday and sysgtems were $200? Mario probably sold “meaningful units” (whatever that means) is because it was a launch with 20+ titles including Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, Batman and ZombiU. Consumers didn’t buy all of them, like me, I only bought ZombiU and Mario. Others bought Call of Duty. It’s like a “no crap” scenario we got here.
i know right? who’s going to buy a $350 consol and then buy tons of games for it right after. granted i’ve already bought 5 games for it (mario zombiu assassins creed mass effect and tekken, and i dont really count nintendoland seeing as it came with the system) but i’ve been saving money for these games. most people would just buy the system and save it for christmas
This. According to GameStop, the attach rate was 2.4. So on average, each Wii U buyer bought two games, and (roughly) every other person bought three. That’s pretty solid. The Wii U sold 425k in its first week in NA, meaning a little over one million games were sold. (1,020,000) Take Mario out (243k) and you’re left with 777k, spread out over 20-plus titles. Also subtract the digital games (Neither NPD nor GameStop [obviously] count those) from the 23 at launch, and you’re left with 18 titles. 777,000/18 = 43,167 units sold per title, on average. (Heavy-hitters like Ninja Gaiden, ZombiU, CoD, Assassin’s Creed, and Batman presumably did better than smaller titles).
That might seem “abysmal” to Pachter, but in context, those numbers are quite good. It’s a way of spinning a stellar launch lineup as somehow detrimental. “Oh, there are TOO MANY good games, so none of them sell like gangbusters!” Basically, Pachter is an ass, as usual.

Nintendo is looking into changing that with their Nintendo eShop sales, as stated by Satoru Iwata in a recent investors meeting.
Come to think of it, I’ve seen a TON of people downloading games from the Nintendo eShop on Miiverse, so maybe some games sold more digitally than they did physically?

Since the Wii U launched in the 18th and was sold out until black friday, leaving 9 days or so left to purchase Wii U. Every person must have abught at least one game. Wii U obviously could have sold more, and thats why the software sales are low, the console was sold out, and no specials to compete with others.
Well it wasn’t from my purchases. Wii u deluxe, Mario U, Zombiu, pro controller and wii controller day of. Then bought black ops2, tekken and darksiders on targets black friday sale. Software sales is no surprise – wait for xmas. plus the majority of those games are being played on other systems.

And besides, he’s going solely on NPD figures, which, first of all, don’t count bundled software (leaving out NintendoLand), and second but most of all, only count physical, retail purchases. Ergo, they don’t include any of the digital download sales from the eShop, and thus, don’t paint the whole picture.
