The Last Story Almost Didn’t Embark On Its Voyage To North America

Xseed Games announced last month that The Last Story was its most successful game to date. However, the action role-playing game almost never made it to North America, according to Xseed Games Executive Vice President Ken Berry.

Berry said, that prior to approaching Nintendo about possible localization rights, he and his group had to convince Xseed Games’ marketing team that selling a $50 Wii game in 2012 was reasonable.

Xseed Games’ is, obviously, pleased that it decided to bring the game to North America, and the company’s sales representatives were shocked on how well the game sold on the six-year-old Wii, which they described as a “dead platform.”

“It was a constant fight even within our own organization. To our external sales reps, we’d be saying, ‘No, like you guys don’t understand. There’s tons of fans out there that are asking for this. There’s a huge fan movement.’ I mean, so yeah. In the end, I think we were right.”

“We’re eternally grateful to the fan community out there. They really stepped up their game and put their actions and their wallets where their mouths were earlier. They backed up their talk.”

  1. well, i’m glad it did! such an awesome game! i even enjoy more this one than Xenoblade! I hope a sequel! PLEASE! XSEED!!!!

  2. An amazing game… a nice gameplay; Tere’s room for a sequel! please do!! I loved Xenoblade too.. It’s hard to decide… I want Pandora’s Tower!!

  3. both games that have been releases in the n americas have been awesome, i dont care if ign says it sucks, they are nintendo haters and jealous that those game are nintendo exclusives, just like ninja gaiden 3 wii u has ayane, momiji, and kasumi, not to mention that the wii u graphics are way better than the 360 and ps3, no wonder why they said the wii u version has “muddy, jagged and horrible lighting” cuz of that and are actually describing the 360/ps3.

    1. yeah, ign is horrible now… I miss the old times of that site! very informative. now they are (most of them) just a ps or xbox fanboys :(

        1. It did seem better when Matt Cassamasina was running the Nintendo side of things. They should never hate on Nintendo, after all, they started as IGN64 all those years ago!

  4. Bringing such a good game to the west ,Ken Berry and his group they deserves a statue.
Taken risks , you don’t see that much from big companies these days.

  5. Let me be the first to say I loved the British vocals in the game! Although The Last Story is nothing like Xenoblade (which is highly epic and a lot longer), it is an excellent story with great gameplay. I just wish the game wasn’t as grainy as it is. Hopefully it gets an HD sequel in the near future.

  6. To be honest a “dead console” (because it’s predecessor is about to come out) is one of the best audiences, Wii owners haven’t been able to play any good new games and there’s a lot of Wii owners, so even overlooking the movement, it’d probably have sold well, given a bit of advertisement.

  7. You wanna talk about a dead platform, XSeed, you’re talking about the PS3, which is known for committing identity theft, you’re talking about the Vita which is named one of the biggest flops of 2012, you’re talking about the Xbox360 with its stillborn kinect hardware that no developer can seem to wrap themselves around correctly.

The Wii and Wii U have a more active core-gaming audience than those others combined, and they’re just waiting for some more quality games like The Last Story to show up.

    1. Dude, I’m a Nintendo fan – and even I can come to terms with the fact that the Wii is dead. Nintendo seem to think so too, as they are no longer developing games for the console (a console which I loved BTW).

Also – even though Sony and Microsoft have enjoyed ‘borrowing’ Nintendo’s ideas this gen – the PS3 and Xbox 360 are far from dead. There are still great games to be released next year, such as Gears of War: Judgement (only on 360), Ni No Kuni, God of War: Ascension, Puppeteer, The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, Sly Cooper (all only PS3 – which is pretty amazing), DmC, Metal Gear Rising, Bioshock Infinite & Tomb Raider.

None of those last four games are coming to Wii U (well, at the moment), which sucks. Hopefully Nintendo can support the Wii U with regular, quality releases (both 1st and 3rd party), and not regress into the old habit of only releasing amazing between software droughts. Still, signs are promising; with Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 & Bayonetta 2 all being exclusive to the machine; not to mention the arrivals of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros. and (hopefully) Starfox and F-Zero.

  8. XSeed games deserves a medal for giving us this game, one that Nintendo of America was too cowardly to do themselves. At least Nintendo of Europe took care of things on their end.

  9. I really enjoyed The Last Story. Sure, it suffered from dodgy writing and characterisation (in true JRPG fasion), but I admired Mistwalker’s attempts to freshen-up the gameplay and mechanics.

Plus, that giggling captain dude deserves his own game.
