The Best-Reviewed Wii U Game Of 2012 Is A Port

mass_effect_3_special_edition_wii_u_box_artThe Wii U was released on November 18th, 2012, in North America, and, obviously, there weren’t many video games released this year for the new console, compared to the existing PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Based on Metacritic, with a Metascore of an 87 out of 100, the best reviewed Wii U game of 2012 is BioWare’s port, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition.

The first Nintendo-published game on the website’s list of the best reviewed Wii U games of the year is New Super Mario Bros. U, with a Metascore of an 84 out of 100.

Here are the top 10 reviewed Wii U games of 2012, according to Metacritic:

  1. Not surprised. They should have launched with Pikmin 3, imo. Atleast one killer app at launch. I could have did with NSMBU later on, but I guess I see why since its Mario.

  2. Don’t agree with any of this, as usual.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge doesn’t even show up on the list, and it is one of the stellar launch titles the Wii U has. I mean, seriously, NBA2K13 beat Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge…really…

          1. I can’t deny you for one single bit, Simply G. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge is a definitive version of the inferior original. I have to tip my hat off to both Nintendo and Team Ninja for adding two free downloadable characters– Momiji (I love her!) and (as the ultimate Christmas present) Kasumi.

        1. Though I dislike the majority of cynicism Aeolus unloads on this site, he has a good point here. Ninja Gaiden 3 is poor.

            1. yes, thank you. I’ve played the game, so i think i would know if it’s bad or not and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge is not bad of a game.

      1. How?
Story? When the fuck did Ninja Gaiden ever have a story, you just go around slicing up the spider clan, who cares why.
The gameplay is EXACTLY the same as 1 and 2, but more refined and smoother, but suddenly its still shit?
        I find that unlikely.
You’re probably just one of the poor butthurt guys that bought the original.

          1. Dude. 70 isn’t bad ? below 60 is where shit starts to suck.

70 for NG3 RE is very good. That’s a vast improvement over the original.

            1. That’s based on 13 reviews, a 70 at that point is a telling sign that further ones are going to be dropping that.

Read the actual reviews that led up to that average and see for yourself. Game is still a broken, bland, turd.

                1. twisting my words, I specifically said it was a decent title to receive in a bundle for /free/

follow your own advice, but you already do since you’re a Nintendicksuck.

                  1. “70/100, which as far as I’m concerned is decent, especially when it’s packaged for free”

keyword: especially. you “specifically said” something else, you nitwit. you still called it decent, even outside of coming as a free bonus with the (bombing) system. eat a dick.

                    1. and it is indeed decent:
                      http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-vita/assassins-creed-iii-liberation/critic-reviews

You are suggesting that I’m a hypocrite for calling NG3 shit, when it is actually shit, and only has 13 critic reviews, this has 71 one of them.

I’ll bet my fucking bank account the same amount of critic reviews for NG3 will drop that 70 to 50s.

you are a worthless piece of shit, and anonymity is your only solace, as you are unable to articulate with an actual identity. stop sucking cock, and man up you pathetic attempt at a chanfag.

                    2. also, the highest review for Ninja GAYden is a score of 80

                      I’m seeing a few 90s for AC:III

                      lol

get this piece of shit out of my sight you nintendolt.

                    3. “i’m betting my bank account on something i have no fucking clue about”

you are actually retarded. i’d take that bet if you were enough of a man to actually risk something your parents don’t provide you with. as if having more reviews means the game’s average review score goes down, you fucking asswipe. what an irrelevant piece of information you’re trying to make relevant in no way other than “I BET YOU ANYTHING XDDDD”.
having a username (NOT EVEN AN ACCOUNT) on this site doesn’t mean shit if it doesn’t tie you to an outside source, which it doesn’t. way to try and change the topic, you desperate cocksucker. all sonybronies try to do that though, as they’re never man enough to own up to their mistakes.

                    4. actually it does, by the mere fact that if the reviews keep up the consistency of being LOWER than 70, then it would indeed change. stay in school, you fucking numbskull, holy shit.

you are a worthless piece of garbage and your mother should have aborted you from her reggie cum filled twat, since that clearly had an effect on why you’re so goddamn stupid and have skyward boners for Nintendo, let this game be on any other platform, and you’d recognize it’s shit.

ninja gaiden 3 started as shit and the wii u version has remained shit; just like the console.

                    5. “by the mere fact that if”

yeah, “if”, you idiot. great thing to “risk your back account on”.
figures that someone this stupid would spend their time writing a wall of text that’s a big insult to someone they know literally nothing about outside of citing a source of you contradicting yourself (didn’t even give my opinions on the games, both of with are shit). enjoy your “social life” that revolves around coming to this site -every single day- and writing up paragraphs defending your soon to be junk-status company. you must be hella insecure the real world if this is your way to vent, especially if you need to do it EVERY DAY without being able to take a break from it. ;)

                1. people who argue in comments about who has the better system have no consistency in the first place

that is why fanboys cannot see things realistically, outside the realm of bias
which is why people who don’t even play video games have more reliable opinions than them

i have 3, 8 and 9 on this list thing
                  5 and 7 i have on pc

                  1. This is the wisest comment I’ve read in this comment section.
I just can’t see how people bother with fighting each other every day on articles.

…If it were kickboxing and wrestling though, things would’ve been fun :D

          2. “Reviewer” score 7.0 = good. Wonder how many of those reviews conplained because it, A. didnt have a deep story that i doesnt need
            B. Complained it was too hard

User score 7.7. I wonder how much of that is butthurt original NG3 buyers. Or people like you. Let’s face it, you’re a sad enough little specimen to rate a game down, just because you don’t like Nintendo (11 years old?).

            1. Shit sux. 70/100 is an average of critic reviews, hence “mixed or average reviews”

but you can’t read fine print because you are a Nintendolt.

                  1. it’s called having an active social life beyond sitting in front of your pc 24/7, which is probably what you do.

it’s okay buddy, sorry to inform you that I have other things to do than wait for replies to stroke Nintendo cock like you ;)

                    1. ooooh the irony in this comment, whatever you say bro whatever help you sleep at night, other than a cock in both ends..HAHAHAHA

                    2. having a social life you say, so tell me this whats the point of you being on this site, OFF COURSE you wont answer this question because you my friend, buddy, pal, bro DO NOT HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE is why you wont answer this simple question, so please dont go saying that we dont have a social life of our own. :)

                    3. Thetruthandnothingbut

Bro, if you had an active social life, you would not be spending a moment of your time trolling on this site.
You’d be out there living life, or inside playing a game.
Not coming on here to insult people like a 12 year old with a chip on his shoulder and a cock up his ass from every defeat he’s suffered.

                      Take a hike.

                    4. Being an active participant on a Nintendo news website when you hate Nintendo does not an active social life make. Nor do your constant cock related comments. I used to think you were at least a mildly intelligent troll, but after reading these comments of yours, you’re on the level of Chad Warden and promanunitedfan from Youtube.

                  1. lol, still trying I see, those although still the same game, THEY are different now, hence the different in reviews so yeah, next time bro

                    1. no not really, one is built upon a broken title that has had nearly unanimously shit reviews

trying to polish it out with a bunch of meaningless additions doesn’t make a turd any less of a turd

for a first time effort in a game unrelated to the console counterpart (acIII:L) that is what makes it a legitimately decent title, and not one that came out initially as frothing ass.

also, the mere fact NG3:RE has only 13 reviews to warrant the 70/100 average, as opposed to ACII:L which has 71 fucking critic reviews http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-vita/assassins-creed-iii-liberation/critic-reviews

                      argument is invalid.

              1. Again, to which point is this people who
                A. Dont like the game because of lack of story, or its too hard
                B. Dont like it because they play shit like DMC
                C. Arent actually aware that the game isnt different and theyre just shoving the “same review” as before on to save time
                D. Butthurt cunts like you rating it down. You’re sad enough to come on a Nintendo site, a company you dont like, to do whatever it is you do.

Ninja Gaiden isnt and has never been a mainstream game, reviewers these days dont review based on the market the games trying to reach, they just review it in terms of everyone. As a Ninja Gaiden fan, this game would be up there with the rest. The original NG3, no, it had issues, but they’ve ALL been fixed.

This isnt something where you can flash your metacritic and neogaf links like they’re solid evidence. Reviewers are shit. The only decent bug reviewer out there is Rev3, and Destructiod, everyone else, garbage.

                1. That’s EXACTLY what I meant by my comment.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge has been the ONLY game that I’ve returned to constantly almost each-and-every day out of the entire Wii U launch day library. This is coming from me, a newbie to the series who has only just started with it from Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge. I can now proudly say that I have become a Ninja Gaiden fan. It gets the most play time on my Wii U, at the moment.

The story mode keeps me coming back for more as I progressively target each new difficulty almost masochistically as well as chapter challenges, which encourage me to play each level and difficulty with every character and rewards me with Karma Points to put towards individual skills for each one. These two modes then send Karma Points and unlock new skills or costumes to use in Ninja Trials and Clan Battle online modes, which have both functioned seamlessly with very little lag on my end.

I love Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, and, in my mind, it is at the top of my favorite Wii U launch games at the moment. Here would be my top list, based on my own personal tastes:

                  1. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge
                  2. Nintendo Land
                  3. New Super Mario Bros. U
                  4. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
                  5. ZombiU
                  6. Nano Assault Neo
                  7. Trine 2: Director’s Cut
                  8. Scribblenauts Unlimited
                  9. Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition

Don’t have any other games at the moment to extend this list any further than that. And, surprise! Games like Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect, and Call of Duty don’t appeal to me. Darksiders II looks to be mediocre to decent at best in my eyes, so I’m afraid to put down money towards it without a demo. It seems to not get any of the formulas it borrows from and establish its own unique flair (in other words, it doesn’t know what game it wants to be to me). The other major title missing from this list is Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition—I love fighting games, but the over-abundance of modes and options seems far too overwhelming to someone who would be new to the series like myself. For Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition, I have no interest in Batman, thus its absence from my library.

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Skylanders Giants, NBA2K13, Madden NFL 13, and the other retail Wii U launch games I have no desire in whatsoever. On the download front, Little Inferno is too strange to me (is it even a game?) and Chasing Aurora (despite my everlasting love for And Yet It Moves) does not capture the sense of uniqueness and innovation that AYIM had previously on WiiWare did. CA is also unplayable without having more players to play with locally, which is a huge oversight on the developer’s end.

Looking forward to what 2013 has to bring for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. I would love to see more exclusive titles (permanent or not) for both consoles announced at next E3. :D

                  1. Little Inferno is actually really fun, despite there being no goal or points.
The game even straight out tells you such at the beginning.

              2. Who cares about those stupid reviews ? Most of them are unprofessional. If you want to see if a game is really good or not, rent it first. Sometimes games that reviewers say are bad may be actually good, or may please yourself.

      2. Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor’s Edge is not a bad game. Its actually really fun and challenging! They added so much stuff the original Ninja Gaiden 3 doesn’t have. Dismemberments, multiple weapons, skill tree and upgrades, new playable characters. The only people who think Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor’s Edge is a bad game are the people who didn’t play Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor’s Edge.

        1. number of reviews doesnt make a difference in percentage but whatever, but i would rather play AC on a console than a water down version..

                  1. and yes i did, giving i play the game, but off course you’ll brush it off saying im lying so dont bother commenting..Happy New Year good sir.. ;)

    1. NBA 2k13 only has like 5 review on Meta critic just checked. Not exactly well or fairly compiled data…

ZombiU , Scribblenauts (from what I’ve seen) deserve to be up there …

  3. Mario U definitely should be the best reviewed game. People are just upset that it’s seems so similar to the other one’s when really the level design vastly outshines the previous installments in the series. I don’t know why no one else noticed that.

    1. Indeed. NSMBU is AMAZING. I am in love with that game. And I didn’t care for NSMB2 that much.

      .Awesome HD graphics
      .Challenge mode
      .Story mode . star coins
      .Boost rush mode
      .Block assist mode
      .perfect level design
      .Off screen play
      .Mii verse integration

The only negatives I can think of are no online multiplayer and maybe they should think about adding a level editor in now.

        1. Another thing I LOVE aboust NSMBU and other wiiu games. Is that crazy ”3D” sound effect you get from the loud ass speakers of the gamepad echoing a millisecond behind the TV.

I like this. I have 5.1 surround already , but the gamepad speakers when in sync add that little something extra. I like it when the voice comes out of the gamepad like in Batman and ZombiU too…..

  4. I bought this yesterday. And it runs incredibly on wiiu. 100% smooth and consistent. For that I doff my cap to Straight right. Well done.
The darkhorse comics are really cool. The touchscreen squad commands definitely enhance the game. And the off screen play is awesome. And the online features aswell.

It’s not the trilogy…. But if you have the spare money and want a good
game on wiiu . look no further.

Batman runs well on wiiu . for 80% of the game. AC3 also runs well enough but is a little inconsistent.
But this game sets a standard for multiplats on wiiu.

    1.NSMBU
    2.Trine 2 Directors cut
    3.Nintendo Land
    4.ZombiU
    5.Blops 2 (wiiu special features)
    6.ME3 SE
    7. AC3
    8. BACAE
    9. TTT2
    10. Nano assault neo.

My top 10 games on wiiu. All of them deserve above 8/10. NSMBU is about a 9.5/10 imo.

    1. They could’ve at least given the WiiU Mass Effect 2. Could do with a remake, the gameplay on it is a little crap.

      1. Uh huh. I have mass effect 1 and 2 for 360 and just sold 3 to pay for……………. 3 .

They could. I got the game for £35 so I feel reasonably happy with that.

It’s perfect for what it is. But like yo say the first are missing. The darkhorse comic is cool though….

        1. Yeah, i like the Dark Horse comics, i didnt have Mass Effect 1 for ps3, because it was a 360 exclusive, so it was nice to get up to chase.
But 2 needs to be played to enjoy 3. You build character relationships in 2, for better or worse, and even in 2 you have the risk of team mates dying, so seeing them survive but potentially dying in 3 is pretty engrossing

          1. Agreed on all of that. But If like me you have already played 1 and 2 (and 3 lol ) then that’s what makes the darkhorse even more enjoyable. Cus you know what you’re picking….

It’s cool. I guess it’s just seeing a game like this on a Nintendo console is reasuring lol.
Just makes you think what Retro , monolith and EAD can do when ACTUALY utilizing the wiiu.

  5. Title implying that it’s a bad thing that a port won. Not that I expect anything other than a sensationalist title from My Nintendo News.

  6. Reviewers are dumb.
Who would actually give AC3 a good rating. Id give it a 7 maybe even 6.5 out of 10, it’s just meh.
I still love Mass Effect 3, i havent felt emotional attached to any other game. Shame they had to fuck up you know what ._.

      1. AC 3 was a massive disappointment. As someone who has been following the franchise from the start, I was eagerly looking forward to this game… I got it day 1, played it and I still can’t figure out how so many people give it these great ratings.

The whole game was a mess.

        1. Did you play the WiiU version with the altered ending?
I hear a lot of negativity about the original version, but more positive comments on the WiiU special edition.

              1. Oh. We were talking about Assassin’s Creed 3 though.

No I didn’t play the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3. That too had the same content as the other versions plus some gamepad extras and so on.

The ending in the Wii U version was given as free DLC for the other versions earlier on in the year. Difference was that the Wii U version had it all on disc.

That said, I never had any issues with the original ending, I thought the game was still great prior to all the whining and complaining.

        2. Agreed -.-
          Nothing clicked in that game.
Naval battles were awesome and tree running was great, but everything else felt mediocre and lazy, there wasnt any big innovation, it was just the same as Revelations but with a new coat of paint and a couple of gameplay features…America isnt a very interesting place either xD

      1. Man, such mixed reaction to this game.

Combining these comments on the site with those on Miiverse can lead to a massive headache. XD

  7. Another reason to buy ps3. Why would I want just Mass Effect 3. I can play all three, ME1-2-3, on my ps3 now.

      1. Mass Effect 3 on Wii U was never meant to swing PS3 enthusiasts over to Nintendo though. I don’t know why people keep thinking that. Mass Effect 3 was put onto the Wii U to target a broader audience who never experienced the game.

    1. Because the PS3 is so obviously the best place to play Mass Effect….just like Skyrim
      (Coming from a PS3 owner)

  8. Mass Effect 3 is easily the best game of this year. Despite “hurr ending” they fixed it for free and it’s almost flawless now. I haven’t even gotten to play the Wii U yet, but if it’s even more improved than the 360 and PC versions (The PS3 one was shit, and of course THAT’s where I got the collector’s edition…) then that’s certainly a feat.

    1. I know. At first glance, Nintendo Land appears to be some shovelware compilation of half-assed mini-games, but it isn’t at all. All of the games bring something unique to the table, and are very fun in their own right.

      1. Try reading the worst reviews for it. They aren’t really reasonable, and seem like they haven’t played the game much at all. They are refering to it as “bland” and “lack of depth”.

      1. Yes, Nintendo Land is EXTRAORDINARY.

I don’t even have multiple people to play it with yet, but I’m getting total nostalgic kicks from all of the solo and cooperative games that I can play by myself. My favorite attraction is Metroid Blast. :)

  9. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed should be on that list. It’s SOO GOOD! The amount of time I put into that game trumps all the hours I put into Nintendoland, ZombiU, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Just Dance 4!!! Im not kidding. Love Sonic Racing!!

  10. IMO it’s good to see that a M-Rated game is the best reviewed game for Wii U, this may be able to lure in more 3rd party developers to bring in current and future titles, although New Super Mario Bros. U deserves the top spot since its a 1st party title
