Wii U Virtual Console Games Will Be Playable On The Wii U GamePad

wii_u_gamepad_whiteYesterday, a Nintendo of America representative told Kotaku that a Virtual Console for Wii U is in the works. Although Wii Virtual Console games are not playable on the Wii U GamePad, the representative said Nintendo plans to make Wii U Virtual Console games playable solely on the new controller, which features a 6.2-inch touchscreen.

So far, we don’t know for sure whether Nintendo GameCube games will be purchasable from Wii U’s Virtual Console, but remember that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime previously said he’d love to see them on the new console.

“We do not have any specifics to share at this time. However, we are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U, and we plan to make it so you can play it on the Wii U GamePad alone.”

      1. It must be easy When Nintendo is on a roll like this :) Easy in a none stressfull way….

Can’t wait for HD gamecube games!!!!!

        1. On a roll? Do you know how many major third-party releases Wii U is missing? Not trying to troll but it’s true.

          1. Who gives a fuck ? Does Nintendo look like it has it has ever relied on third party support ?

Pikmin 3 , Game and Wario , Rayman legends , Monster Hunter Ultimate , Wonderfull 101 , Bayonetta 2 , Lego City , Injustice , Aliens colonial marines , NFSMW , Project cars . I mean it could be worse….. And there is obviously a shit ton of unannounced games coming.

Nintendo lives off first party content , 2nd party and 3rd party exclusives. The odd Multiplat is just a bonus to them. They would be unstoppable if they had all the third party support. Why would you shop elsewhere.

Nintendo is on a roll. Pokemon X and Y , Wiiu Virtual console announcement , 3DS is massively successful so far , TONS of new 3DS games coming , Wiiu launch was a moderate success , The wii and the DS continue to sell.

Nintendo is in a really good spot at the moment , believe me. The doomsayers will spout their bullshit and start writing articles like ”Is the none existent Ps4 going to crush the wiiu ?” When it’s a load of bullshit.

Like when they used to say ”is the vita going to crush the 3ds?” pfft…

            1. I laugh every time I see how hypocritical some of you Nintendo fanboys are. You supposedly don’t give a shit about the best third-party titles not coming to Nintendo consoles. Yet, when you get a major multiplatform release, you hoot & holler like you just brought democracy to North Korea or something. Nintendo needs to change the level of third-party support it receives…Or they may become a third-party developer themselves.

              1. i agree, i’m a Nintendo fan and not a fanboy and i am willing to admit they need to step it up with 3rd party. He has a point though, even without the best 3rd party games, they managed to do well.

              2. That’s what I got a PS3 for just in case. So I won’t miss out on anything due to owning all three consoles, kid. :p

          2. That’s just a “for now” thing.
It’s also got a few that other systems don’t, such as the improved version of Ninja Gaiden 3 [you know, the version fans expected on the other two systems but didn’t get], upcoming games like Bayonetta 2, and Wonderful 101, and that’s just a tip-of-the-iceberg example.
All systems start out a bit slow, but it will get better as time passes. It’s kinda dumb to expect a system that’s brand-new to get third party support that matches current gen stuff when its predecessor wasn’t known for such things, ya know?

  1. Let me see if I understand. There is a maximum of 2 Game Pads per console. If I download a 4-player game on the Wii U Virtual Console, only 2 players will be able to play it? .__.

      1. For Off-TV play yes, but you will likely be able to play on the TV with the GamePad also. So you can eventually have 2 GamePads, and 2 Pro controllers for 4 player action. (or 3 Pro Controllers with 1 GamePad).

    1. I’m sure it’s not easy to make a virtual console and there probably gonna make it way cooler than the wii’s.

      1. I don’t care how hard it is lol in my opinion it should of been ready. It was also outrageous how long we waited on the eshop on the 3ds.

          1. No, he’s right. Nintendo really needs to step it up and start making the Wii U the amazing console it has potential to be.

            1. I’m surprised they haven’t put some of there major older games on there yet. GameCube games, SNES games, heck even putting the old pokemon games on there would earn them a fortune. I don’t understand why they haven’t yet :/

              1. I think every single Employee at Nintendo 1st and second party is up to their eyes in work , So it must be a pain in the ass to manage all the game development , etc etc etc whilst balancing the books and trying to make profit.

It’s probably a much more complex situation than what you’re thinking of. Think of it like a Restaurant Full to the brim with people Nintendo is like the chefs in the kitchen trying to make everyone happy and managing resources…

                  1. That’s when you look at the global economy , the Yen to Dollar ratio , and how much you’ve invested in console Manufacturing , Game development and Staff wages. Miyamoto must be on about $5M a year at least…

All that compared to how much money is coming in and how much time it’s taking to do so.

It’s just like Any business. The packed restaurant analogy is perfect. Iwata is like Gordon Ramsey behind closed doors.

                    1. (pushes Miyamoto into wheelchair) Okay, buddy you had a great run but it’s time for you to retire.

                      1. Why would I be? I despise Apple products. By the way, AdarAss101? That’s the insult you have? I knew you were stupid, but this is an all-time low for you.

                  2. thekidnintendowiiman

My guess is that they’ll release those pokemon games when pokemon reaches it’s next anniversary, call one month ‘Pokemonth on the eShop’ and have these special deals on the games.

                  3. My best guess is that it’s taking time to gather the resources and outline the plans for how they’ll make such a thing work, far as gamecube games go.
Might also be an issue of deciding which games they want to release first, and which ones they’re still able to release.
They’ll probably want to make sure they get it right the very first time instead of having to pull out an update to make a GC game work right once it’s added to the Wii U.

Having said that, though, I can’t wait to see it happen.
I’d love to have Lost Kingdoms 1&2 and Metal Arms: Glitch in the System on my Wii U.^_^

      2. They should let us install the GC games we already have instead of making us buy them again. Or perhaps let us download those games for free through the use of one use code. Or making us pay a small amount. I want to play my GC games on my Wii U not on my Wii.

      3. Nobody should take Reggie words for granted, he can say many thing, but he can not do anything to actually alter the developed circle of pretty much every Nintendo product.

      4. Give me Game boy, game boy color, sega Saturn, sega CD, GameCube, dream cast ( please, PLEASE the dreamcast) and gba.
I really have my fingers crossed for the game cube, gba, and dreamcast.

            1. I’d download both the dreamcast and GameCube versions of both sonic adventure 1 and 2 just because of the awsome features each had. (and sonic adventure 1 had UNLOCKABLE GAMEGEAR GAMES) also I’d download plenty of other dreamcast games.

            1. They had Wifi (with an adapter) and cables. It’s the stepping stone to the current digital age. As other people have said, I would buy up all the big name games in a heartbeat. Even better, give me a complete franchise like Pokémon and I’ll pay double for them if I could trade and get gens up to the current game. So for the games coming out in Oct, I could trade for and use all 6 whereas in ruby only 3.

              1. Virtual Console is a service that let’s player experience classic games as close to their original form as possible. I know for a fact Nintendo will not add online play to Melee. It just doesn’t work like that.

                1. Yes, but for some games its only logical to add an online element to them. Also, let’s face it: local multiplayer is frankly outdated. I absolutely love it, but I hardly ever have company over to ever enjoy it.

                  1. It may be logical, but it still wouldn’t happen. Virtual Console games are supposed to be as close to the original as possible. Online mode will not be added. End of story.

                    1. Never say never. It isn’t end of story unless you’re some big shot at Nintendo. It honestly is the most logical route and developers would have set up these games for online play or support originally if they had the technology built in.

                      1. It’s not going to happen! How can I make myself any clearer? Virtual Console games are ports, not remakes! No new features will be added!

                        1. It’ll happen one of these days man.. I grew up from rotary phones to cell phones, then wireless and applications in just about everything. I’m not claiming that it’ll happen tomorrow, but it will eventually. If it weren’t for all those visionaries, we wouldn’t have the 3DS and Wii U today.

With what Nintendo and others have been doing, it’s only natural to streamline product sales and distribution to the consumer. Your point is perfectly clear, but it is still illogical. Being stubborn isn’t going to move anything forward and encouraging a business to follow suit in grand ideas that will benefit consumers and developers alike is the right way to go.

                        2. I’m not going to tell you again. NO NEW FEATURES WILL BE ADDED TO ANY VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES! THEY’RE PORTS NOT REMAKES. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD YOU FUCKING MORON!…But seriously, it just doesn’t work like that, Scott. End of story.

                          1. AdarASS101 sucks Bill's poontang!!!!

Why the fuck are you doing at a Nintendo-themed blog, whore? You don’t fucking know what a “port” is so quit denying yourself and shut the fuck up before you get a dick stuck up your red swollen ass!

                          2. Why are you making a parody of username and calling me a whore? The Virtual Games are ports, phone up Nintendo and ask them if you don’t believe me. By the way, I’m quite certain that your OriginalUnation in disguise.

                            1. I don’t see any logical reason why it can’t, if Nintendo decides they want to.
I mean, heck, modders have found a way of making Double Dash work with an online set-up, and from what I’ve seen of it, it plays very smoothly.
If a bunch of semi-amateurs with little funding can make that happen, then Nintendo could do it easy if they changed their minds.
It’d be a selling point for old titles that would make more people want to buy the games.
Press that point in Nintendo’s direction hard enough and I think they’d be convinced, if the prodding came from the right source.^_^

                          3. adarazz is correct. It’s just a port. It’s not impossible, but it’s very extremely unlikely any new features would be added.

                            1. I realize it’s a port, but the technology is there and sooner or later it will happen. Also calling me a moron doesn’t make your point any more valid.

            2. I want the old pokemon games to come to VC. I may not be a fan of nostalgia, but this is one series I make an exception for.

              1. I want the tactics rpg that where released on gameboy advance they where amazing, ogre battle, onimusha tactics, super robot taisen and many others that graced my gb advance on my 3ds ….o rebel star tactical command.

            1. I’d like to play 4 swords adventure with my friends, each of them having a pro controller/ classic controller and me playing on the gamepad in the bathroom. XD

          1. The Wii U has officially arrived :). Monster hunter 3 Ultimate, commeth to us, we shall playeth thee as long and longer after the five Heavenly rathalos scales are obtained. Needeth we the HR9 attack up large silver soul armor. The Vitual console on the Wii U shall be beautiful, Mickey Mania on the Game pad epic :).

            1. Probably a tad bit off topic, but when is E3? I want to see what games are coming for Wii U. Nintendo won me back to 3DS with Pokemon X & Y, and I’m hoping they win me back to Wii U.

              1. E3 starts on either the 11th or the 13th of June. Let me google it for you. Wait you can google the date for yourself :). But I shall for more will need to know when E3 falleth. Put in mind, seek nintendo directs more than E3, for nintendo have become dodgy and shady in E3 presentations lol.

                  1. You are welcome, JellyBean. Here is hoping the Vita price cut is $100, so as we have a vibrant handheld market. Also that Sony stops or minimizes the crossplay nonsense :).

                    1. Plus they need to move there 3rd party devs from PSP to Vita. Memory cards are set to get a price cut, so is the system itself. Hopefully it boost competition and gets both sides working like crazy and pumping out new and better things :)

          2. Aeolus, what type of car do you drive, your choice shall allow us to see if you have common sense or everyday rationale. Nintendo a gift from God, so as midocre FPS Seattle originated machines are shamed. Also that copy-cat land of the rising sun born, back side touch sensitive handhelds can actually be given a canvas to exist :). Now the virtual console on the control pad, let us gamers world wide smile.

            1. You’re really pathectic. Trying to start a fight much? First of all, knowing what type of car he drives would not tell us if he’s a rational person or not. Secondly, if God existed, I don’t think HE (sexist much) would spend his time creating video game companies. I hate using this term…But you are Nintarded.

              1. Have you noticed that I am but provoking a battle of wits with Aeolus and myself. 20/20 is foresight, so here is my plan for luring Aeolus out, to teach him how Sony can recover and thus he too can be happy again. Why can’t I believe in God if intelligent formations of the universe and galaxies exist? If we as humans can create wonders like the NES, why can a omnipotent being create a universe? Am I not allowed to use my democratic right to believe and think as Sir Isaac Newton did, outside the box of intitutionalised schooling? Here is one to provoke you adarazz101; Sir Newton was a greater scientist and intellectual wise rationalizer than Einstein!

                1. If you hate Aeolus you should just ignore him.

P.S. – If Isaac Newton was lived in this age, he would most definitely not believe in God.

              2. I am Gamer, I seek gaming diversity as nintendo has provided. Once a PC gamer as well; but it hurt to see FPS and MMOs dominate the other platform that had game variations as nintendo does. Nintentard I am, ’cause am crazy enough to remember what gaming really is, an entertainment that is vast, and built on someones imagination, at times some ideas some might call Nintentarded i.e Wii motion when it was first released :).

          3. I sincerely doubt we’ll hear anything else on the subject until E3. Also, as much as It would bring joy to gamers and be a great boon to Nintendo’s profits, I don’t think Nintendo will ever release any of the old Pokemon games on Wii U or 3DS VC without the ability to trade Pokemon with others.

This is one of the games main features and would require extra work on Nintendo’s part to work on 3DS/Wii U and I don’t think they’re willing to commit the resources to it.

          4. There’s always hope for a new system to grow. I’m glad the company is making progress in making the Virtual Console to become a reality on the U. NES, Super NES, Genesis, Neo*Geo (hopefully), Saturn, Dreamcast, Turbo Grafx-16… we’ll look forward to see U’s next app to arrive whenever possible.

          5. I’m not going to be happy if I have to repurchase a VC game that they remaster for Wii U. Also what Jellybean said – Bring on the Pokémon!

          6. This is excellent news! I’ll just save all my major virtual console purchases for Wii U now. Here’s to hoping they bring back the Donkey Kong Country trilogy and SimCity.

          8. This is great news but more than likely will give Nintendo yet another way to charge folks for 8-bit and 16-bit classics they’ve already bought 2 or 3 times. Granted, we’ll get some new titles, hopefully Gamecube ones, but realistically we’ll see a lot of overlap with the Wii’s Virtual Console and 3DS Virtual Console shops. Guaranteed.
