Yesterday, Nintendo revealed two brand-new Pokémon games – Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, which are exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS and will be launching worldwide this October. Pokémon Company President Tsunekazu Ishihara shared several tidbits on the upcoming games, which can be read below.
- In addition to existing Pokemon, there will be a large number of completely new Pokemon. The additions will bring the total number of Pokemon in the franchise from the current 649 to over 700.
- Because of Pokemon X and Y, the Pokemon anime, movies, card game and merchandise will “break into a new dimension.”
- People around the world will be able to simultaneously experience “Real Play.”
- The game will utilize the Nintendo 3DS to its maximum abilities to leverage its overwhelmingly beautiful presentation.
- The game uses an innovative communication system that makes it feel as if you are playing with other players around the world.
- The bonds between players and Pokemon will deepen, and Pokemon will become stronger with the new battle structure.
- Everyone will enjoy the game’s scenario and music.

Considering how Junichi Masuda that MMO wouldn’t fit in a pokémon game and the fact the game is marketed toward children.

Hmmm, iffy on the “marketed toward children” part, but he definitely did something along those lines of an MMO not being proper for a Pokémon Game. The article does, however, make the game seem like it’s going to have some kind of MMO aspect to it.

It sounds like they’re mixing up the classic formula a bit. It’ll be interesting to see what’s different.

“New battle structure”?! Oh hell no!! Don’t try to fix what is not broken!!
New battle systems are fine.
Come on, we’ve been using the 4 moves turned based for 5 generations now, time to spice things up
but its going to change the way competitive battling is right now. It took me 4 generations to actually master and learn pro strategies.
But, let’s see where this goes. I’m supportive either way
Is it worth learning the strategies? Will it make me beat everyone that doesn’t use them or will it only give me a slight advantage?
If you want to get into competitive battling, then yes. If not, then you can forget evs and ivs and all that fancy stuff. And even if you do battle online, the type of pokemon and their moves and the order of your party can mean winning or losing
How? Each gen has added new additions, for natures, to EV training, different move effect, the Power abilities, its impossilble for you to have “mastered” it. And even if you did, dont you want the challenge and excitment of learning something new again?
Fiiiiine. Let me reword….get good at it. Mastering is a bit overwhelming
This is better, because everyone will now have to learn the new system, so that everyone is equal.

By “new battle structure” they meant how the battle is now is in 3D, rather than changing the battle mechanic.
They aren’t changing anything.
new moves and abilities is inevitable though, some of these could have a varying effects on the battle structures

What I thought by that is they will most likely turn Pokemon cards into AR cards and who knows maybe have AR battles? I think that a feature like that would be worth the full price alone. Maybe they could also use Augmented Reality for when the anime is on TV……..idk at this point.

As for the card game, maybe they’ll be AR/NFC, and you can use them on the 3DS and WiiU and battle people globally? That would be a big change, seeing as Pokemon cards have always been about local battles, even i could get into that.
Same goes for the merch as well
I would love a Stadium style game for 3DS or wiiu which incororates the trading card game. So you both have to have X amount of cards which adds up to an equal strength each. Then you have to zap them into the game usung NFC or AR.
That would be so cool….
As long as it’s not CGi i don’t care if Ash is kept or not. (I have nothing against CGi just not for the main pokemon anime, maybe a spin off)

I’m curious what Real Play is myself.
It could be an MMO type, but how do you balance out the different levels ect, and XP?
I think it might be similar to Dark Souls, where at a certain point, your characters progression is saved onto the online servers, and when another player goes down the path you went on at the time, they battle you in the way that they were at that point.
Of course it would probably be optional tougher battles for extra XP though.
Thats just what i think though.

real play may= the real time multiplayer mode shown subtlety in the trailer.
Not necessarily. Real Play jus suggest you’re fighting a trainer who’s real, doesn’t mean it has to be in real time.
I just find it hard to imagine pairing together people in an MMO fashion, when the levels, pokemon numbers, levels of each pokemon are always going to be different, let alone if theyre online at all. I just think the sort of Save State idea is more logical, not to mention easy to manage seeing as everyone on average would have the same level at those points, not to mention getting extra XP would make the battle more worth it. You could spend ages just standing in an area and people not wanting to battle.
I think the MMO type thing could be half possible, maybe more of a big hall where people go into and fight each other rather than automatic match ups, although those and tournaments would be in it too.
All i know is, i actually want rewards for beating people online xD

They only say over 700 because they haven’t made a final decision on which ones make the final cut, happens with all pokemon games, alot of pokemon in gen 1 and gen 2 were supposed to be switched around but they decided not to.
Basically they can confirm 50 news, but unsure about anymore.

I have been not playing pokemon since pokemon sapphire, so I have to ask, they are bragging about 700 pokemon because this 2 new game will feature ALL of those 700 pokemons?
it will expand the total number of pokemon to 700, the game won’t and can’t have all of them.
More than likely they’ll have all of them split across the two games to encourage trading as per usual.

This is defiantly the year for 3DS owners as we’ve got those of great games coming out such as Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates of Infinity, Pokemon X Version and Pokemon Y Version plus many more unannounced games.
