Wii U Game Sales Are ‘Far Behind Launch Levels For The Gamecube And Wii’

wii_u_games_box_art

Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz has said in a research note that Wii U video game sales are far behind launch levels for both the Gamecube and Wii. The low Wii U game sales were apparently masked by the Nintendo of America press release which concentrated on Wii U hardware revenue sales. In the United Kingdom, no exclusive Wii U game has entered the top 40 all format chart for the past three weeks. Here’s what Creutz had to say on Wii U game sales.

“Software sales for the Wii U remained well behind launch levels for the original Wii and GameCube in December.”

“Totals for the November-December period were -43% lower than software sales for the Wii and -50% lower than those for the GameCube.”

  1. DJSTEELER aka WINTENDO

Part of it is because NintendoLand is a great experience by itself. Don’t worry this will pick up they’re are great games for the WiiU!!

      1. SERIOUSLY!!!! AMERICAN””’ you need a life…..I hate trolling but you have to be the biggest dweeb ever…. every god damn thread has you saying ” WONDERFUL” on every other post……..

        IT’S KINDA CREEPY

  2. No surprise the 3ds has such a great library filled with new great games and the wii u has games that are ported, rehashed, and just okay. When rayman legends and pikmin 3 comes out, sales should rise up. Nintendo needs a good e3

      1. The 3DS launch was a fucking disaster in terms of games. Pilot wings , Steel diver , Street fighter and fucking Nintendogs , Like seriously ? Ridge racer and Ghost recon rounding off the other spectacular 3DS launch games /s.

Wiiu launch was really solid in comparison to 3DS.

I’ve bought about 8 full games and 2 digital so far. But then again , i guess Im just caught up in the hype of having a new system. But i’ve enjoyed every game a LOT.

      2. A nice Mario sports title with online a 3d mario plus maybe star fox or fzero? While we wait for Zelda and metroid titles?

      3. He didn’t say the 3DS “had” a great line up. He said it “Has” a great line up.

I think we all know the 3DS software launch was absolutely HORRIBLE. I’m not saying there were no great games, I loved MGS3D, but after the initial games launched, there was a new software drought the lasted so long, and the eShop was worthless when it became available. I couldn’t give Nintendo money no matter how bad I wanted to.

However, over a year from launch and a steep price drop, the 3DS has a great library, I am no longer in a love-hate relationship with nintendo, but at the 3DS’ launch, I very much was.

      1. E3 does not help shit? Whatever you’re smoking, please get off it. It’s a show to highlight new and upcoming consoles, features and games. It’s basically one huge advertisement! And 360 is still selling well because Microsoft market the shit out of it.

  3. inb4 ‘NINTENDO WILL DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!’
    The system’s more expensive.
    The games are more expensive.
This makes sense. Sales will improve.

    1. You dont think. You’re just a robot. Take some time an take a look at the numbers. It’s true, most of the games are ports with few exclusives. He’s not saying anything bad, he’s just reporting the numbers.

        1. How is he bring a drone UNation? I don’t want to cause an argument, but he’s right (except for calling you a robot)

            1. How am I kissing his ass? I’m actually being neutral here, I don’t condone what he did in calling you a robot, but he brought up some valid points. This analyst isn’t dissing Nintendo, he is just reporting numbers.

              1. Don’t bother arguing with him. He’s nothing but an irrational fanboy. Him and Nintedward should be thrown in a mental asylum.

        2. dude, im right though. You dont think. You think anything that doesnt praise Nintendo is bad. This Doug guy is nothing like Patcher.

          1. Don’t worry, OriginalUnation is a hypocrite and a fanboy. His/her opinion is irrational and it’s better off if you just ignore anything the idiot says.

    1. +1

Apart from a few decent ports not a lot of exclusive/new wii u games. As much as I like mario bros u I completed it and haven’t looked at it since. We have certain new games experiences with nintendoland and zombiu those aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. I’m going to assume that alot of uk owners went for premium console and got nintendo land with the bundle. I’ve had more fun with that than mario tbh.

            1. I was just simply stating that the “other” consoles weren’t useless. Besides, Netflix & Hulu are limited to select countries. Not every country gets it.

            2. Oh by the way, those services aren’t anything special, these days most people download shows/movies and watch them off an external HDD. Hence why media playback is so great :D

              1. True , but you can’t say wiiu doesn’t serve a purpose besides games. Nintendo TV has the potential to replace the TV remote with a much more sophisticated device. The built in remote is awesome too.

                1. I never said such a thing. Please show me where I said that.

Also, my phone and iPad already replace my TV remote. I don’t need more devices to do that.

                    1. All good :) I’m interested in some of the WIi U’s features though, I’m currently planning how I’m going to integrate it into my house xD You would be surprised how connected all my devices are xD

                      1. My house is pretty tech focused , albeit not the best tech in the world. 5.1 Surround with a 32” LG 1080p 2011 slim tv with a high refresh rate.A wiiu black deluxe a 360 elite and a ps3 Slim and a 3DS XL. And a pretty good laptop with 4GB RAM.

And a secondary 26” 720p TV in my bedroom with gamecube at the end of my bed :)

Not the best but hey. I need to get my internet sorted I moced in about 6 months ago And I’m using the guy who lives below me’s internet he offered to let me use it as it’s unlimited and he’s a good friend though. But unfortunately none of my consoles except my 3DS (and laptop) reach the signal :(.

S I have to take my Wiiu to my mums or friends house to get internet access at the moment. Cus I don’t really want to pay for internet because I’m gettin it free lol…

                      2. @Nintedward: Miiverse integration in Nintendo Land (and other games) is pretty sweet though, so I recommend you get a stable internet connection you can use for your Wii U :P

                        1. Oh I know! I have used the wiiu online exstensively at friends and family’s house… I need to get a fast broadband connection ASAP…

                1. Meh, I don’t care for backwards compatibility :P I buy my games all digitally, if I want to play something that is old, e.g. the old Spyro trilogy, I just buy them off PSN for next to nothing. Now I’m enjoying Spyro goodness on my Vita :D Besides that, I’ve kept all my old consoles. I actually just found a game I have on NES that apparently never got released in the US.

              2. Wii U also has miiverse, Nintendo Tvii, and it shits on the PS3 media. Bluray? Who doesn’t have a DVD in their home?

                1. Why not? We aren’t talking about games themselves, we’re talking about the browser and TV experience. My tablet works better for such services, so I’d prefer to use that.

                  1. I have to agree with Wii U Nation on the browser part. Its atleast on par with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, despite the lack of flash and server side Java, and it much better any of the Android phones I have tried. The only thing I have used with a much better web browser experience in the tablet form was the Window 8 RT. And Wii U is miles better then any of the SMART TV, I have tried.

It also connects beams or switches images to the TV much better then any of the devices I have tried. I haven’t tried a Roku box yet so I will reserve judgment there.

I have also been using the Wii TVii feature allot which works well with TV’s that are on regular antennas, didn’t even realize I was getting NHK in my neighborhood until I was messing around with it. And the description of TV shows help, it even helped me find out new episodes were coming on for shows I favorited.

And I am not arguing the other system don’t work at well as multimedia parts, I use my Xbox 360 for DVDs all of the time and have used Crackle on it when they had a free weekend for Gold.

      1. That’s horrible.. I think the cause of it is the name of the console which confuse consumers and Nintendo’s marketing. Those are two things they purposely failed on. I understand wanting to maintain your casual audience, but the commericials were ridiculous and should have at least shown off the new Pro Controller and some of the hardcore games, along with the ability to play games on the tablet strictly. I think if they would have done that, and changed the name, this would have been more successful.

          1. I can understand that. SUPER Nintendo, and how the two systems differ a lot in design. The Wii and Wii U on the other hand looks similar and people think it is just a gimick, add on, or just a tablet to the Wii. If you’re actually asking how was it marketed, I wouldn’t know.

            1. I think you missed the point f the article, though. Console sales are not what’s “disappointingly lower”, it’s the software that’s selling fewer. The console is actually doing pretty well.

      2. So many ports that many have already played. I personally did buy 5 games for it in the past month and will get Aliens next month. Honestly the one game I play the most is sonic racing.

          1. E3 was pretty bad for everyone last year though. There were some highlights here and there, like Pikmin 3, Rayman, The Last of Us, God of War (kinda it wasnt that interesting, or new), and Watch Dogs, but generally, it was pretty dull all round.

I though 2010 and 2011 were solid years in terms of Nintendo though.

            1. The last couple of years, I found no company did much of anything, especially Microsoft, it was just Kinect! Kinect! Kinect! Kinect! Nintendo didn’t seem to show off the Wii U as much as people hoped, and Sony, Wonderbook, no need to say any more. Before that though all companies did rather well.

              1. I don’t even bother watching the Microsoft one anymore. If something that im interested in actually turns up, i just watch it separately, like Tomb Raider ect.

In terms of Nintendo though, them keeping quiet on WiiU made E3 pretty boring. I know it only its launch, an we wont see the real stuff till this E3, but there was much to dazzle with, it was more like “here some ideas of what you can do”, which is fine, but there wasnt alot of games showing it off, even Pikmin 3 didnt show anything off, not that i minded because i just wanted to look at the game xD but previous years and this were good for 3DS, lots of cool stuff, as well as a few Wii games like DKCR, and at the time, Skyward Sword (but we know how that ended up when it came out -.-)

                1. I’m just hoping Nintendo actually put in a great amount of effort and not just save it for Nintendo Direct -_- Seriously, E3 is way bigger, you think they’d show it off there.

                  1. Yeah, i agree.

It all depends on if somethings ready though a lot of the time.

Its been 6 months since E3, WiiU/3DS games that have been announced since then, or are soon to be announced like Capcoms game ect may just have not been ready to show off.

But yeah, with the high probability of at least seeing 1 next gen system at E3, Nintendo can’t afford to not pull out the big guns and pull attention of the new Xbox or PS4

              2. Sony’ last year e3 was doing fine until they showcased Wonderbook. Wonderbook was so bad people forgot the few good games that were announced for PS3 and just wrote it off as a bad e3 for Sony. Microsoft was just bad, they were pushing kinect and their home entertainment features. Hopefully e3 this year will be good for all consoles.

            2. um most people were buthurt last year because everyone believe on these stupid rumors that they see on the internet. Thats why i one of the few that like nintendo e3 2012 because i did not listen to those rumor crap.

              1. You would be the only pleased with E3 last year. Nintendo decided not to show off the Wii U that much at E3 and chose there Nintendo Directs. E3 is much more significant and important than Nintendo direct. Rumour crap? Lol.

      3. Not surprised. All I have is Nintendo Land just because it came with my black Wii U. Sales will rise with rayman legends and pikmin 3 coming out, but besides that Nintendo NEEDS a good e3. New Super Mario Bros U, Call of Duty, Arkam City, and other launch titles just don’t cut it for AMAZING games.

      4. It’s a shame. I own five Wii U titles (Batman, Call of Duty, Mario, NintyLand and ZombiU) and they’re all amazing. I’m especially surprised by the Wii U port of Black Ops 2. I expected the worst, but I’ve caught the CoD bug too–I’m hooked!

        1. I hated BO2 at start (too used to BO1), but I suppose I’ve been hooked too D:
Also, the Wii U Pro Controller is really good- much better than the 360 controller (for shooters, at least).

      5. Obviously.
Most gamers aren’t rich, and though many of you will probably disagree: the game out now just aren’t incredible, whilst some of the announced ones do seem to be.
I think alot of gamers (at least me :P) are saving their money so they will def. be able to buy:
        – Bayonetta 2
        – Monster Hunter Ultimate
        – Pikmin 3
        – Wonderful 101 (trusting Platinum Games for it to be awesome)
        – Lego City: Undercover
        – Retro Studios’ project
        – Monolift Softs project

And also the slightly further away/not officially announced games:
        – Zelda
        – 3D Mario
        – Metroid
        – Super Smash Bros. Wii U

I want ALL of these. I want no game out now as badly as any of the above, and THAT’S your reason.

        1. SherlockHolmesWillFightBilbo

I agree with you COMPLETELY. $350 just for the console, and the only available games are ports of games that came out months before. I want/am considering all of the titles you listed barring Pikmin 3 lol.
If they don’t show Super Smash 4 AND/OR Zelda at E3 this year, Nintendo will die.

          1. ZombiU was not a port. And it’s amazing.
Glitches? Sure. So does BlackOps2, and most console games.
I loved it, and it made Ubisoft a lot of money as it was very well accepted overall.

      6. So Bloody what? I got 4 games and 2 from eShop and I enjoy mine? They do this everytime try and diss Nintendo and then shut up once they bring the big games to it.

        1. Stating sales figures is not “dissing” Nintendo. They’re comparing the launch sales with it’s previous generation consoles. Stop being butthurt good sir.

        2. A company doesn’t have feelings, and you shouldn’t feel inclined to ”correct the difference” by being a whiny baby about nothing =D!

      7. Well considering just to get one game it’s costing most people $400/£350, it’s not surprising, plus there’s only a couple of good exclusives, and obviously some people wont buy ZombiU, of NSMBU, ect ect.
It’ll be lower as well if it doesn’t count digital sales, which most analysis’ don’t, so.
        Understandable to be honest.

      8. Out of curiosity, have all of these reports about horrible Wii U software sales been based solely on “retail” sales? I only ask because this is the first home console that has launched with full retail downloads, downloadable indie titles and full backwards compatibility right at the beginning of its life. I also know that there aren’t many reliable news sources that track digital downloads for a system like this.

            1. How so? They are comparing the Wii U’s launch (retail wise) to Wii and GC launch (retail wise). Why are people in such damage control?

              1. Uh dude , the wii and Gamecube didn’t have digital full games , so its not a fair comparison AT ALL. As far as i’m aware Hundreds of thousands of games must of been purchased digitally.

                  1. Don’t be silly. All games probably over a million digitaly worldwide… NSMBU about a 100K on it’s own. People are actually enthusuatic about digital on wiiu because of the DDP…

                  2. I’ve purchased 4 digital full-retail games, six retail games and all of the “indie” games. I told myself I was going to support retail before digital, but the simple convenience of downloading a game rather than waiting for mail or taking a taxi to GameStop won me over.

But games I preorder are still going to be retail though.

      9. For me it is that i have such a huge backlog of games for other consoles/handhelds that I am currently working on. It’s really hard though to not go shopping for new games, but so far so good.

      10. But what about the attach rate of NSMBU?

Honestly, it makes sense that they haven’t broke into the top 40. How manny Wii U consoles have been sold compared the other two?

BTW, 3DS started like that, and look at it now.

      11. I have four wii u games. That’s the most games I’ve ever had for a system Ive do recently bought. Obviously people aren’t too pleased by what Nintendo are offering at the monment

        1. A lot of what they’re offering are old ports. That’s the issue, once they start having 3rd party games brought out at the same time, then the sales will be better.

          1. Yea but some companies are more hunble about it.my first nextgen console was a 360 i love until i try a ps3 and wii, the wii cause of his exclusives and vc and sony cause of exclusives too and valieu for your money and Microsoft well they been lucky they can but the same xbox live they put out for the 360.

            1. *Yeah, but more companies are more humble about than others. My first next-gen console was the Xbox 360. I loved it until I tried the PS3 and Wii.

I love Nintendo for it’s exclusives and virtual console. I love Sony for their exclusives and good value. for your money. But Microsoft has the best online of the three.

          2. What i wanted to say is: PS3 bullshit games and expensive !!! No respect for the consumer, its “give me your money Dumb ” !!!
360 is ROD !!! And no Spirit in their games ” all for Nerds” !!!
Nintendo have the love of good games, they do VIDÉO GAMES !
Not Money = I mean ONLY money …
            Cant you see that ???

      12. No wonder. The price of the console is way to high. Just a few people can afford to buy a new console with more than 1 extra game. We are not talking about 300€ we are talking about 400€. If you wanna have 2 extra games you have to spend 460€. That´s just to expensive.

      13. Man, a new post and already THIS many comments? Wow!

Anyways, it’s because all of the launch games pretty much SUCKED! The New Super Mario Bros. series is a joke compared to games like Super Mario Galaxy. They need to bring a REAL Mario game, Animal Crossing, Zelda, and other hardcore titles to make the Wii U (and games) sell more. Pikmin 3 will be the first game that falls into that wonderful category.

      14. I only bought one game… New Mario bros. U
I also have Nintendo land which was bundled.
There are games that interst me( assassins creed… Zombi U, Sonic racing and Darksides II)
        But my money is limited…
These are games I am still getting this year:
Pokémon X and Pokemon Y, Pokémon mystery dungeon, Luigis mansion: dark moon, Animal crossing, Dragon Quest VII and Dragon quest X (only if they don’t have online fees), Fire emblem awakening and Pikmin 3… Those are a Total of nine games.. I can’t afford more at the moment..
I would have gotten more Wii U games but those good 3ds games that are still coming out this year are preventing me from buying more Wii U games for now.

      15. They need better games for the Wii U not more ports from other consoles. And when I mean better games, I mean that it will make the gamepad borderline essential for gameplay. Like Super Mario 3D Land.

      16. The only reason I havent bought a Wii U yet is because there arent really any WOW games. Most are ports, and the exclusives dont interest me. I’m not a super big mario fan. I’ll buy one by the end of the year since I know Pikmin 3, and Game and Wario will come out.

      17. It just goes to show that no matter how many games are available on a console’s launch, it makes no difference if the games aren’t MUST HAVES.

      18. Nintendo’s E3 this year should have at least 3 triple A title appearances.
Pokemon, Metroid and… hm, I’m torn between Starfox and Mario Kart. These will definitely get everyone’s attention and money. Imagine if they put their full weight behind a Starfox game! XD

      19. This is proabley because there is only 4 original good Wii U games which are New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Scribblenauts Unlimited and ZombiU and the rest of the good games are either ports of X360 and PS3 games like Batman Arkham City and Mass Effect 3 or new games that are also on X360 and PS3 like Assassin’s Creed III or Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
By the end of the year with games such as Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, LEGO City: Undercover, Game & Wario and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate plus all the unannounced games that will come out this year too the Wii U sales will be way up there.

          1. They tend to be have more forceful attitudes towards Nintendo than the other 2 companies, seriously all 3 should be treated with the same respect and attitude. What gets me is that these guys act like PS3/360 never had a bad launch, in fact if it wasn’t for the PS3 price cut, it wouldve killed the console in terms of sales and revenue.

              1. If you look at the doom article and professional troll article numbers, Sony and Nintendo have more of those than Microsoft. Maybe I am butthurt, but I just think it’s time to put all this hate into the past and let these big analysts, journalists, and gaming sites give Nintendo a chance to shine and even publicity can help. Of course Ninty needs to do their part with better advertising and marketing department.

                1. They don’t need to give a system a chance. they should just be reporting based on trends and not personal feelings.

        1. generally they work for a publisher or for game journalism. they are supposed to be there to give the company or public a analysis of the current situation of a game system, genre or game. They also are used to predict what will work in the market for companies. They should not be telling the public what they think will happen because it does not serve the public any good, it only serves to serve agendas. Currently analysts who have been public have not been doing good jobs reading the market. But this one is just stating the facts.

        1. Also, generally digital sales are left undisclosed. Which may make up for much of the discrepancy especially with the DDP (digital deluxe promotion).

      20. Honestly I was psyched for Wii U when it was first launched. But the more I heard about it, the less I wanted one. And the launch lineup is just terrible, as are the confirmed games for 2013. There just aren’t any Mario 64/Ocarina of Time type of games that make me totally want the console.

NSMB Wii U looks just like the Wii game before it, ZombiU is mildly interesting but not a “killer app”, especially since the load times are terrible and the constant need to look down and move the controller around to “scan” is annoying really, and all the other games are just… boring. Or they’re re-releases of games that were out on the 360 months and months ago, and were only fairly decent to begin with.

Not to mention, the graphcis are hardly distinguishable from current gen, which takes away a lot of the buzz for me. Graphics & power aren’t everything, but I have waited SO LONG for a Nintendo console that had graphcis that looked amazing AND great games. The graphics are just… standard, now. I mean, they look great and all, but we’ve had consoles capable of those kinds of graphics for more than 7 years now. The only new thing the Wii U adds is touchscreen controls, which for most games so far feel really forced and shoehorned-in, as if they’re just trying to load up as much touchscreen functionality as they can to separate themselves because they have no other way of doing so (i.e. much better graphcis, much better physics, bigger & more interactive environments, etc.).

Honestly, if Nintendo released a new console that had the Wii U Pro Controller as the standard controller, much more power for all the above reasons (not just graphics), and then had the tablet as a separately-sold functionality, I think developers would STILL be hesitant to jump on board a Nintendo console (due to the whole Wii thing), but they’d probably be more willing than they are right now and it wouldn’t be getting skipped over for a lot of AAA third-party titles like it is now. It would also likely have at least a few more killer exclusive games.

That would have been MY route. That, and have a better online service and a more grown-up feel to it; Both the Wii and the Wii U’s dashboard, for example, looks too… “kiddy” and childish. The XBOX 360, for example, has a much more modern, sleek, sexy looking atmosphere and looks like it’s a more cutting-edge service.

Nintendo’s problem is they’re still living in the 80’s and 90’s, when only young kids played Nintendo & Super Nintendo, and they could get away with that sort of “younger” mentality. These days, there are MUCH more young adults & adults playing games, and they’re a much more lucrative market too. I’m not saying they need a console full of nothing but Call of Duty and such, but they definitely need to do a bit of growing up.

Also, having all their first party games (which are terrible at the moment; not one huge, exciting flagship game like Mario 64 was, for example) be local-multiplayer only? That’s insane. Again, Nintendo is still stuck in some dream world where people still gather in groups to play games; this isn’t the 80s and 90s anymore; people mostly play online, and they don’t really care about having a personalized console-version of Facebook for their console (e.g. MiiVerse), they just want to be able to play with friends and communicate with them via headset whilst playing games. They should, for once, use someone else’s platform as a cue… in this case, XBOX Live, seeing as though it’s the biggest, best online-gaming console service since Halo 2 kicked the original XBOX Live off with the original XBOX.

Get with it Nintendo. I don’t want to see you go the way of Sega… although, that would be better than what they’re doing right now. But they need to get with the times, while still “doing their own thing” as well. They’re more than capable of it, but they just need better people working on it, or at the very least, better ideas.

        1. For someone who doesn’t care about the console u do an awful lot of talking about it. If u like playing online games in a system where the only thing that matters is “who is best” then just go do that, and stop spending your day complaining about a great system.

All I know is that when I got my wii-u and 4 wiimote+nunchuk, I have had a party of 5 people at my house every night playing mario, nintendoland, tank tank tank, Trine 2, chasing aura, and nano assault. We even all have fun playing death-pass ninja gaiden.

Fact of the matter is, if you were satisfied with online gaming you would be playing it right now. Not on here complaining about how u don’t have any friends in real life.

                1. I havent but thats how it looks cause it needs a pc to work same has the pad needs the console and in a more serious note nvidia better bundle it whit the needed card.

                  1. Please find me a source that said it NEEDS the PC to run. It has the ability to stream PC games(That fits there requirements), it doesn’t NEED the PC at all.

                    1. It was on a machinima and destuctoid video it also.says it need s a gtx660 and 8 gigs of memory but if you have extra info that it can be please do so i can know of his others features please post cause thats all i have.

                      1. It doesn’t need shit to run, they’re talking about the requirements of streaming games properly to it, you retarded fuck.

            1. Don’t get Ouya, Project Shield will basically do the same thing, but better.

This is assuming the price is something less than “enthusiast” level…

              1. Ah right, I was mainly just going to get Ouya because it was relativel cheap and I though, hey why not lol. I hope NVidia don’t make Shield too over priced.

        2. Funny how for all your ranting, you don’t even have the system. Look back at ANY Nintendo launch and you’ll realize the “Mario 64 flagship” games were never launch titles. Also, your suggestion to “use someone else’s platform as a cue” is kind of odd, seeing that they literally used several programmers from the team that put together the Xbox Live to create their infrastructure. Your attitude reminds me of the high school kid trying to put down their younger sibling for not understanding Algebra when they’re only learning to add and subtract. Give it time! Hell, we’re still inside the heart of the launch window. I’d hate to see you miss out on a great experience simply because you assumed you wouldn’t appreciate it. Not everyone thinks or even agrees with your assessment of that which you haven’t even experienced. Come on, you can do better than that, can’t you?

      21. I wonder if these analysts have digital sale numbers? Because I know digital sales have been very good for the Wii u and 3ds

          1. Lol you’re like that guy professor oak when he says “wonderful” In pokemon snap everytime you show him a good picture :D

      22. You may be expecting a bit much. Nintendo can’t make Mario, Zelda, Metroid, F Zero, Pikmin etc ALL come out the same year. And its been proven true time and time again: Launch games will never ever look as good as games made 2 or 3 years down the line. Nintendo isn’t perfect and can’t satisfy everyone, but it would hurt the entire game industry if they ‘go the way of Sega’.

        1. well they could, they have enough devs to do it. but then they would lose quality and games would have to come out quicker, meaning less quality. its better to stagger releases, more time to work on every game, and less holes in the launches. It also means less intimidation to 3rd parties

          1. You’re right.
Some fans will never give 3rd party a glance if there’s too much of those familiar 1st party games.

      23. He may have only been referring to retail sales. It is highly likely that most gamers now prefer to buy games via digital download platforms (which NPD doesn’t track sales for) such as the eShop in the case of the Wii U and 3DS instead of buying retail copies. In short, I am certain that 3rd party games are selling well on the Wii U and will continue to do so.

      24. It never fails; whenever I see an article get over 150 replies, I’m almost guaranteed to see a bunch of trolling going on….
Having said that, though, I guess i can somewhat agree that the launch titles weren’t all superb.
The launch WINDOW games, however, that’s a whole different story. A few of the games that have come to the system recently really shine.

        1. Actually, there hasn’t been a great amount of trolling compared to other articles. Most people have been able to discuss and include there own opinions :D

                      1. O adarazz you need to grown up and learn that sites like this are good for 2 things to fuck or get fucked in the comments section, to survive you needs to pic the side of the mayority a hand full of facts and alot of exagerationyou seems to have the exageration part right just needs the facts and cut the faggotry.

                        1. Calling someone a raging Nintendo fanboy is not a personal attack. If you consider it an attack, you’re going to get shredded to pieces by worse people on the internet.

          1. Im happy giving 60 to your mom for sex, dont know why but blow joven feal better if the person dosnt have thoots.

                1. Yeah enough of your poorly translate sexually jokes. Things like that don’t stop Bill, it makes him come back for more.

      26. To be fair, when the Gamecube launched, heck, even when the Wii launched, there were fewer entertainment options for gaming. Now, thanks to smartphones that more people spend time with than the actual humans around them, mindless masses have apps, apps, and more apps. There are some great ones, yes, but with so many people looking down as they walk and drive you think we’d have a large increase in injuries.

      27. The reason for this is very simple actually, the magnitude of software available for the Wii U at launch was so HUGE! The Gamecube or Wii didn’t have nearly as much launch game options, so people had to settle. But the Wii u on the other hand, there was one game for any type of gamer. Therefore, the sales are scattered.

        1. They’re saying the sales weren’t as great, having a huge selection of games is no excuse. There just wasn’t really a great amount of WOW, I MUST HAVE THAT games.

      28. This is simple.Old games that have drop prices on other consoles hurt sells on Wii U.People don’t want to pay 59$ for old games like Batman,Ninja Gaiden 3,Mass effect 3,Tekken tag tournament 2 that are now 19$-29$ on PS3,Xbox and PC!

        1. Speak for yourself on Ninja Gaiden, Batman, and Tekken.
Both Batman and Tekken have features in them worth using on the Wii U, and Ninja Gaiden Razor’s Edge is such a huge improvement over the rival versions that there’s really no way that anyone other than the most avid of Nintendo haters or the most broke of gamers in general would not pick up that version over the others, if they really wanted NG3.

      29. No one should be surprised considering like 70% of the launch line up is for game series that have never been on Nintendo hardware or have already been released for a while or already have a strong following on other consoles.

Mario U is a good game, but they’ve been shooting out NSMB games so rapidly people were bound to stop caring sooner or later. Other than that ZombiU and Nintendo Land are the only other games I could really recommend anyone to get so far.

Seriously, I constantly hear people praise the Wii U’s launch lineuo, but it was not that good. It still isn’t that good, and it won’t even be decent for a few months. Nintendo messed up thinking they could create the illusion that there’s a lot of games and that it’s a “hardcore” system and get away with it, but it obviously didn’t amount to much.

The hardware is good, but it is in desperate need of some quality Nintendo games to make it special, and as far as I know none have even been revealed yet besides Pikmin 3. Of course, they do seem to be supporting the 3ds quite well right now and I’m happy about that, but I’d at least like some announcements to be made for the Wii U and maybe an update for Super Smash Bros

      30. Gamecube had the support of the hardcore gamers who Nintendo had during the N64 days (according to vg chartz it sold just a few million units less than SNES in US I was surprised by that), unfortunately a significant part of them now switched to X360 after being “disappointed” by the “casual” Wii. I am smelling “price drop announcement” soon, maybe during E3. The casual gamers migrated to smartphones and Nintendo will have to fight hard to get the hardcore gamers back, which means a badass Zelda trailer at E3 and probably a 2014 release at any cost and a Mario and Metroid games this year. Another reason for the low sales might be a lot of people are spending a lot of time in Miiverse (like me) or buying on eshop the “indie games” (I already bought 2, Little Inferno and Mighty Switch Force). You can never count Nintendo out, and I think at least 3DS can keep them afloat in the next few years, until they can make Wii U be cool or wait Sony to give up (mark my words, unfortunately between Sony and Nintendo I believe Sony will go out first, is that bad there right now, years losing money and no hope to get better)

      31. How the hell does a system that’s been out for 2 months suppose to have enough installed base to even hit the charts?

              1. I accept the fact that its now 2013 and this rubbish is based on sales over a decade ago during a time that more people could afford to spend $300 on a console and buy 2-4 games per system.

        1. Please remind me how Call of Duty is made in England…oh wait, it isn’t! Isn’t that fascinating?

I’m a British gamer and y’know what I mostly play? Pokémon.

      32. Because there was a large number of games available at launch, which will be split up over a console’s initial install base.

      33. Pingback: Wii U Sales below Gamecube and Wii Levels; Not much of a problem yet | Nintendo 3DS Daily

      34. While I want Batman Arkham City and Darksiders 2, I refuse to pay $60 for an old game that costs less on other consoles, the same can be said for Mass Effect 3 and that series has the trilogy available on competitors console. I am interested in Zombie U but reviews were polarizing. Wii U needs to get GTA 5 and other 3rd party AAA titles or it will fail. Or Nintendo needs to make something that is as successful as Halo if it wants to succeed.

      35. Hey there I am so happy I found your site, I really found you by mistake, while I was searching on Google for something else, Nonetheless I am here now and would just like to say thank you for a marvelous post and a all round thrilling blog (I also love the theme/design), I don’t have time to look over it all at the minute but I have saved it and also added in your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read a great deal more, Please do keep up the excellent work.
