Sony Is Eyeing Up The Competition Before They Make Their Next-Gen Move

wii_u_back

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has announced in the business section of The Times today that the company is waiting to see what Microsoft does before making any announcements regarding the PlayStation 4. Hirai says that it will let Microsoft make the first move. We reported a few days ago that Sony’s new controller for the PlayStation 4 will supposedly include biometric sensors and a LCD touchscreen, not unlike that found on the Wii U. Looks as though Sony is grabbing inspiration from both parties.

“Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?”

    1. This is exactly what they need if it is released at same time as the new Xbox it’ll be a lost battle. If they release it too soon it’ll be rushed and criticized. You (Sony) are finally getting the memo huh?

      1. “Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?”

They are indirectly admitting that they copy the competition’s product and strategy.

        1. then let them copy i dont see eny problem with that as loong it deosnt look exactly the same, it is just a console without games its nothing

          1. I did not claim that there is something wrong with it.

I am just saying that they are copying their competition, which is a controversial statement that will not sit will with Sony fanboys.

    2. you serious? smart move!?
Sony is scared. they just want Microsoft to come out first so they can copy and/or try to be better. It’s smart but Sony is scared.
“Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?”

Yeah , that mentality clearly worked in the Vita’s favor against the 3DS . Oh wait …

Terrible idea. The reason Sony is behind in this console race is because they let Microsoft show and release the Xbox way ahead of the PS3. They’re going to further lose support of other developers and customers if they allow MS to beat them to the punch every time.

Instead of worrying about what Microsoft is doing and trying to one-up them, simply release the best console you can and hope that that alone will give you an edge.

  1. So pretty much they don’t want Microsoft to copy them, while both are probably gonna copy Nintendo ._.

    I don’t want a shitty touchscreen. A ds3 is just fine for ps4

    1. they’ll probably have that in conjuction with another controller like how wii u has the gamepad and the pro controller. It might be the main controller or it might be the secondary

      1. If the touch controller is the secondary controller, it’s going to suck like Move did. I’m not saying move sucked, but it didn’t get enough support, just like the cross play thing with the Vita and PS3. There is small to no support for this because the developers can’t rely on that people owns a Vita. When developing for the Wii U, they know the owner owns a Wii U GamePad!

      1. Pretty much this. This late into the system’s development, they’re not likely going to change the system’s specs and design.

This is more a marketing tactic than anything else. Wait to see how the competition reveals their system, what they focus on, and then try to 1Up them when it’s time to reveal their system. They’ll likely try to focus on specific functions and features that are exclusive to or work better on their system.

      2. Someone made a minor mistake and you call them a “dumbass”? You’re exactly the kind of person I would not like to socialize with in real life.

        1. Aeolus is an arrogant prick who thinks he’s better than everyone else.
Simply G is a trolldefender, but won’t defend Nintendo fans when they are correct.
It’s the way of things around here.
I rarely go online anymore. Miiverse is a far cleaner, gamer-friendly community.
Not all this two-faced, arrogant, hypocritical bullshit.

          1. You need to pull your head out of your ass. SimplyG is in no way a troll defender. He’s one of very few who is actually logical on this site,

  2. At least they’re honest this time. But really that’s the PS business model. “We’ll do what you do, but flashier & better!” Lol gotta love Sony.

    1. Thats how the world works dude. 90% of the technology you own would not exist if it was for someone making a “flashier and better” product, from an existing product

    2. That’s debatable, both PS2 and PS1 were weaker systems than the competition. Xbox and GameCube were more powerful than the PS2 and the N64 were more powerful than the PS1. Didn’t stop them from being awesome game systems, though.

      1. Genesis CPU had was clocked higher. But that’s just as irrelivant as when comparing a Wiiu to an Xbox 360 , the Wiiu being the SNES and the Xbox being the Genesis.

        1. Genesis CPU only really mattered when it came to the likes of Sonic and similarly faster paced games.

Besides that, SNES did everything else better.

          1. Indeed. That logic kinda applies to 360 VS Wiiu at the moment. But that’s because games/ports were coded for 360 and rush ported to Wiiu.

I’m sure when developers build for ground up on wiiu it can do everything better .

        1. The suggestion was that a powerful system “never won”; that is incorrect.

Thus rendering the entire thing invalid.

          simple shit to comprehend

    1. The dualshock is a shitty outdated controller. It feels like shit compared to an xbox 360 controller and now the pro controller. heck I feel the gamepad is more comfy than the Dual shock. It’s time for some rounded edges and new approach at least for Sony.

      1. I have small hands so the Dualshock is good for me
My favorite controller is still the Gamecube controller
My god that’s the equivalent of holding boobs in your hands while playing some Metroid Prime

        1. Gamecube controller is amazing. Nintendo really needs to bring it back their next console.
          Gamecube 2 anyone?

As for the DS, I have big hands so it’s extremely uncomfortable for me to hold it.

      2. I really like the dualshock controller. It has the best analogue sticks IMO, certainly a better D-pad then the 360, and I feel its just all-around a great controller. The only problem I have with it is that the triggers are terrible, which is something they had right with the PS1 and PS2

        1. 360’s D-pad sucks. And I agree the triggers on PS3’s dualshock isn’t that great. It never feels like I got a good grip on them.

I like the Wii U’s Pro Controller the most. It got a much better layout for the analog sticks than the 360’s controller, and I don’t need to pull the trigger far in as I would have to with 360 controller’s triggers when playing shooters.

It’s not perfect though, the shoulder buttons feel slightly cheap (for lack of a better descriptive word), and the digital triggers are no good for modern racing games that normally would use analog triggers.

  3. This is so they can steal some of Microsoft’s ideas as well. They don’t have the capability to create something of their own these days so they have to steal ideas elsewhere….then they try to make up for it with offering slightly more powerful specs than the competing platforms…..Sony is uterly distasteful…

    1. ^Agreed. I was saying this before they even copied Super Smash. They came out with Play Station Move.. literally a Wii-mote ripoff. Plus they sell things for way more then they are worth. Their T.V’s are completely overrated. I could get a Vizio for half the price at the same damn quality!

      1. They didn’t fully copy Smash Bros, the idea and concept was definitly copied
But the actual gameplay is pretty different
Plus I like the idea of my favorite Sony characters duking it out
Yes I know I can use homebrew on Brawl but I don’t want to hack my wii, dont feel like it

      2. Except that the PlayStation Move was in development (and publicly demoed) before the Wii remote was even whispered. Look it up – Sony’s “Magic Duel” from 2001. If anything, Sony was just slow to implement it. Nintendo made the tech relevant and Sony tried to put their tech to use too late. That’s hardly copying them though. That’s more, jumping on the bandwagon.

PS All-Stars takes the cross-over fighter concept that has been popularized in Smash Bros. but the game plays completely differently. It’s like comparing Dead or Alive to Marvel vs Capcom.

        So…… try again.

        1. Sony can’t execute anymore.
          They’ve lost their creative edge.
You realize 2001 is over 10 years ago, right? We’re looking for modern, innovative business development.

Nintendo was presented the Wiimotes after the company failed to sell te concept to microsoft. If sony was ahead on the tech, you have just reinforced how terribly they suck at tech execution/marketing.

Whether ahead on the tech, or sporting more horsepower, sony can’t do what Nintendo does. Make Money.

          1. I was replying to a statement about them copying the technology, which they did not.

I explicitly made note that Sony failed at implementing the tech and jumped on the bandwagon later. Sony’s poor marketing is nothing new.

I’m pretty sure we all know this.

        2. Sony will always have their excuses. “Oh we were actually planning Play-Station Move FIRST..etc.etc” Also, Sony never would have come out with PS All-Stars if Nintendo didnt with SSB. They are taking advantage of the success of Nintedo’s mascot Brawler. Sure the gameplay is slightly diferent and maybe it is a good game. I DONT CARE. The only reason for the game is to mooch off of Nintendo’s success change a couple of the features and act like it is somthing new. Sony is a company that mooches.. thats it. Call me when they come out with somthing FIRST!

  4. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if Sony came up with their own “Gamepad”.
    The Gamepad is really convenient.
Plus, I’m tired of the Dualshock…
And I just want to see the Sony fanboys say how great having a Sony “tablet” as a controller would be when they’ve been talking trash about having the Gamepad as a controller for the Wii U.

    1. Yeah well Sony is a trash company. It sickens me to see they copy a crap load of things from Microsoft and Nintendo(Nintendo especially). They copied the Wii-motes, Super Smash Bros., and now it looks like they might be copying the gamepad(which wouldn’t surprise me at this point). Sony is too expensive and full of themselves to think everyone will just eat outta the palms of their hands.

      1. Yes. They do.
And sometimes those fanboys are Nintendo fans, but often not.
You do know the other consoles have “fanboys,” right?
Or are simply called to be a missionary to Nintendo Fanboys?
It’s obvious you don’t care, or are one of the others as you only belittle Nintendo fans.

        1. LOL did you even see the comment I was replying to? Jeez dude, I was defending Nintendo and how Sony fanboys talk trash no matter what.

What’s your problem attacking me all of a sudden these days.

          CALM YO TITS!

        2. Also, it’s interesting you intentionally and completely ignore the hundreds upon hundreds of Sony hate comments on this site that I choose to overlook and not reply to, then attack me for responding to a few misguided comments.

        3. You need to learn to read a comment properly, seriously, I respect you Jaded, but you seem to have a false sense that SimplyG is a troll defender, I’ve seen him defend both sides, he is probably the most neutral person on this page.

  5. ”Why go first when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better” – Like you did with the 3DS and PS vita ? LOL , and Like you did with the PS3 even though 90% of multiplats completely outpeformed yours on the weaker Xbox 360.

Sony is just a bunch of idiots. Playstation all stars came out 4 years after Brawl did and it’s a shite compared to brawl , so their logic is wrong and flawed.

    1. Microsoft and Nintendo should patent EVERYTHING theydo so Sony’s scumbag videogame department doesn’t copy and paste their ideas. -__- Friggen Sony…

        1. Ummm.. yeah I do. You can patent anythin you create as long as you can show that you need te patent to sustain your profit in the marketplace. If Sony steals everyone’s great ideas then a patent CAN be necissary.

        1. Dude….yes I agree the PS3 multiplats were mostly shit compared to the Xbox 360, but have a look at the exclusives…..Chances are you will takes a few minutes to name all of them. Now look at the Xbox 360….Halo, Gears of War, Forza and a few other Kinect junk….You are a hypocrite, when people say that Wii U doesn’t get exclusives, you say that the First party games are what is important. Then why this change of mind when it comes to the PS3?? And the best way to play multiplats has been and always will be the PC.

  6. Sony is smart for waiting, but Nintendo is smart for going first and racking up sales before the other two consoles hit the market. The only one NOT smart here is Microsoft. They are smack dab in the middle so they are naturally in the worst position.

      1. IDK this time everyone is HD. Might be diferent. Also, looks like Sony is trying to steal all their ideas. Microsoft might have a hard time this coming gen.

  7. oh i don’t know if i would use the term ( grabbing inspiration from both parties.) i know the company lacks any imagination they are stealing ideas i don’t have any respect for this company nowadays i used to back in PS1 era but now i don’t …

    1. I never had respect for them. I have only owned one Sony product in my whole life. I just bought a Sony Google television that was 50% Black Friday deal. I can tell you that it would NOT be worth it without the discount. It was still expensive with the 50% off… -__-

  8. very smart move. thats how sony rolls. improve on your competitors tech and make something off the chain. which I’m sure the ps4 will be.

        1. If it costs $800 with the tech these days, they’re just admitting the PS4 will destroy the Wii U spec wise. Face it Nintendo fans, they won’t makie the same mistake twice! I’m predicting a $400-500 console.

          1. If they did use them, then super high specs will make it more expensive, if not more complicated, to develop for, since Sony will demand of their third party partners that they show off as much of its capabilities as possible.
That will be a put-off to developers and they’ll lose business.
Sony would be smart to keep the upgrade to graphics and specs at a minimum and focus on developing unique new ways of playing on the system.
Like the Wii U is doing, especially in regard to indie devs.
A bit off-topic, but speaking of indie devs, I get the feeling that Steam Box is going to be huge for a lot of people that don’t already have Steam on a high-end PC….but I digress, so back on-topic.
If Sony was ever going to copy anything from Nintendo, then focusing more on HOW one plays rather than how powerful the gear they play ON is, would be the right thing to copy.
And personally, as someone who wants the PS4 to succeed so long as it doesn’t put anyone else out of business, I hope they DO copy that aspect.

    1. improve WTF!!!!!!!!

MOVE WAND 300 DEGREES MOTION TRACKING HORRENDOUS CAMERA LAG

SUB CONTROLLER NUNCHUCK COPY NO MOTION WHATS SO EVER MASSIVE LIGHT INTERFERANCE ISSUES CONSTANT RECALIBRATION UNSUITED TO TIGHT MOUSE FPS

WII —WII REMOTE PLUS 1600 DEGREES MOTION TRACKING 6 X MOVE NO CALIBRATION ISSUES OR CAMERA LAG TIGHT TRUE MOUSE POINT FPS ABILLITY

NUNCHUCK 300DEGREES MOTION TRACKING (REMINDER MOVE SUB THINGY NO MOTION WHATS SO EVER)

      IMPROVED FANBOY SHUT UP

  9. Don’t think a touch screen controller would be a good idea for Sony, I already own a console with that so why would I want another? If im going to buy a second it’ll be because its a different gaming experience

    1. IF, and I stress, IF, that rumor is true, they’ll probably try to just unify what they have been doing with the Vita/PSP cross controller and remote play; Making it an out-of-the-box experience.

I don’t really care either way if they keep the Dualshock or if they go for a tablet controller as long as it is implemented well into the system and games.

  10. now that he said that in The Times, Microsoft won’t release the details until they are very close to launch. then by the time Sony gets an idea together, Nintendo will be releasing their virtual reality console

  11. NO THERE NOT THERE EYEING UP THE GAMEPAD AND COPYING MS WITH A PC FAKE CONSOLE THERE GOING LINUX MS GOING WINDOWS OBVIOUSLY

THERE MAKING A GENERIC PC WITH AMDS NEW SHITTY ATOM LIKE CORE LOL MS AND SONY USING GENERIC TABLET SOC AND A SEPERATE GPU

LINUX PC VS WINDOWS PC IN A WORLD FULL OF PCS UTTER GARBAGE SONY MS

NINTENDO WON THE CONSOLE WAR SONY GOING LINUX PC PROVES THIS I HAVE A PC ALREADY GOOFY FUKING SONY

  12. What Microsoft should do is come out with a press release saying “We are going to wait and see what Sony will do first”. Or maybe both companies should stop worrying about what the other company is doing and just try to make something totally original and unique.

    1. Says nothing about launching later. It is talking about revealing later. They have already stated that they are not planning on launching later for this next-gen.

  13. dualshock 3 gens running with analog sticks like wen you slip in real wet dog shit FUCKING HORRIBLE

sony are a joke and there move wand aint no fps pointer mouse like wii remote its a waveyy stick nothing more nothing less its a joke

  14. kinect 2 lol utter garbage

sony no innovations or gimmics whats so ever

nintendo gamepad ,wii remote, nunchuck, balance board,3ds interaction

please gamers see truth before your eyes

  15. Haha i laughed so hard at this. Thats typical Sony for ya… waiting to see if people like what nintendo does with their console and do it one step better then the big N. Classic Sony!

  16. Didn’t Nintendo already patent the U-Pad?…

I don’t get how Sorny can get away with this!

    Sony = Plagiato

    Microshit = Overrated

    Nintendo = Original

And once again Nintendo will win this generation.

Do I need to say more?

    1. Sony only needs to slightly change the name same with Microsoft. PS Pad and the XPad. Then they could get around any Patent Nintendo has lol. But alas it will blow up in Sony and Microsofts face.

        1. DPad

Touch Screen gaming (Sega had the idea first, they just were never able to release it due to high costs)

          Sidescrolling games.

          1. Nope, the D-Pad as we know it was developed by Nintendo. I don’t know about the touch screen business, so I won’t comment there. But come on, sidescrolling games? You can’t “steal” a type of game. I’ll give you force feedback. While they weren’t the first, Nintendo did implement the haptic technology in the N64 first in consoles, via the Rumble Pack.

            1. Yeah, go do your histor, Nintendo did not develop the DPad, Oh and I mentioned sidescrolling games because people on here complain that PS: All stars is a rip off of brawl, so Why can’t I say they ripped off side scrolling games?

              1. Read: As we know it. And I guess you’re no better than them, then. I personally don’t think anybody “steals”. Is the Move similar to the Wiimote? Yeah, but it’s also better. Sure, companies borrow ideas from other sources and improve upon them. But calling it stealing is petty. This isn’t directed at you; it’s more my opinion on the matter.

                1. I was making a point that everyone copies. I don’t care about it greatly, I just want to shut them up about it. So I’m guessing trying to prove a point is as bad as them? Ok, also where did I say stealing? I don’t recall that I ever said stealing.

                  1. You know what I meant. Rip-off/ copy. I just said steal because I was pulling a blank. And no, I suppose it doesn’t. That was poor reading comprehension on my end.

          2. Nintendo made people WANT sidescrolling games. Sega had Sonic…other then that Sidescrollers back then just plain sucked. While that is my opinion I wont change it.

            1. I don’t care if they MADE people want them, the point is, they have copied whether you like it or not. EVERYBODY copies.

    1. Then Microsoft keeps making money from the rest of their company and eventually justfades out of the gaming industry. As for Sony…well their choice…fail completely and go bankrupt or say fuck it and release the PS4 anyway lol.

  17. I love Sony, but this describes exactly whats wrong with them these days.

They don’t want to be a leader, but a follower. They’re obsessed with muscling others out with technical specifications. Look back at the successful Sony hardware. The PS1-2 they weren’t the most powerful, but they were just so much better. Hirai look at your Vita specifications. They blow the 3DS out of the water. Has that helped you out in sales much? Or the amount of truly good games for your platform? NO!

Instead of following your competitors by doing what they do, with just extra power *PS Move*. Do your own thing again, and stop with this obsession that’s doing nothing for your company. No one but the overweight, insane tech nerd care about things like how much RAM your system has, or will pay 500+ for a console.

  18. Aeolus, just suck the Nintendo out of my Wii Motion Plus considerimg you are an even bigger faggot.
Maybe that will do you some good ;)

  19. Simply G, you’re trying to defend Sony…..on a Nintendo site.

I’m no Sony fan, but honestly, trying to argue is just pointless, and it’s a waste of time.

On Topic: When WILL Sony learn that POWER. IS. NOT. EVERYTHING. >•<

        1. What do you want now? What do you mean I’m not trying? You think I’m trolling? At launch that was basically the motto of the PS3. Yes its selling well now. But at launch it failed get over yourself you ego manical drone.

          1. 70+ million sold.

Not selling well? What deluded planet are you from? Also, you’re calling Aeolus a drone? You? Of all people?

            1. MY GOD PEOPLE!!! Open your eyes. During the 1st 3 years or so of the 7th gen what sold the most? Wii, What sold the least? PS3 due to its $700 pricetag. My god some people are idiots. And yah me of all people. Whats that supposed to mean I will bash and shit on Sony when ever I get the chance. I have openly admitted it time and time again. I am a SONY HATER. I will be the first to dance on their grave and spit on the CEO or president of Sonys grave when he passes away. I do not support ANYTHING Sony does. Havent since the PS2 days.

          2. “Look at the PS3s motto. It only does everything.

            Except sell lol.”

            “Yes its selling well now.”

            Contradictory shit, I see.

    1. You must not know me: I support gaming.

I own and play everything. If you look at the other articles on this site instead of the ones that just talk about TEH CONSOLE WARZ, you would see how much I support Nintendo gaming, in addition to the others.

      1. I understand that; but in the end, a console is just a console lol. No point in trying to defend it as if it is a baby. :P

        1. I only reply to a few posts that are obviously misguided or the intention is to misguide. Look at all the other stuff I let go. 100+ comments on the article and I only posted a handful.

Interesting that you single me out though.

              1. @Simply G – I’ve been watching you (not like that though xD). I’ve seen you defend both Sony and Nintendo for awhile now. You are very unbiased and interesting (again, not that way lol). I singled you out because you’re different from those other “defenders,” if you will. Keep thinking the way you do; it’s nice.

                Have a good life. :)

  20. ALL Sony does is takes others ideas and makes it more powerful. NINTENDO had to end its horsepower somewhere so Sony will just easily make it faster and more powerful since they have a heck of a lot of Wii U’s stripped in their R&D.

  21. Ya know what would be a real kick in the pants?
If Nintendo’s next system came created more like a PC.
    Upgradable.
As in, Nintendo could literally create a console that would accept new, custom-made, chips and boards for sound, graphics, etc, into different ports all around the system, heck they could even create one that opens up to allow players to replace the motherboard with other custom-made Nintendo motherboards, and players could buy new bits and pieces from Nintendo’s site.
Nintendo would never have to release a whole brand-new system ever again, and they’d never fall behind Sony or Microsoft again in terms of specs, since they could just create new chips themselves and sell them to increase performance.
They would have to allow players to store everything on their system’s current chip set into a secondary device to save all of it when switching out motherboards and stuff, but if they really wanted to take it that direction, they could, with the right minds behind the move.

    1. That wouldn’t work well. Because you have the same problem as a PC then, unless you pay lots of $$$ the experience won’t be as good.

  22. Interesting article. This will be excellent news for Nintendo in Japan if this is true because that means the PS4 will be launching much later than 2013 which will give Nintendo the opportunity to catch it’s stride in Japan and nab some exclusives and have an extra holiday season to sell more units. If the Xbox 360 successor comes out by fall of 2013 I believe Nintendo will be in quite some trouble in the West (espicially in the UK and US). I can’t help but feel that this is the wrong move for Sony to be so late into the game. I believe they shouldn’t launch the PS4 any later than Spring of 2014 if they won’t to stand a chance at being number one for this upcoming console generation. To each his own.

  23. The Playstation should be 99% ready for release if they hope to have it out by this Christmas. I think it is finished. The game developers need time to develope for it. It they finish a game and then Sony changes the console, their efforts are wasted. Who want to design a game for a console that is not finished and may change? I guess sony does not think what they have now is any good. Be proud of what you have. anything they have is a step up from the PS3. I would like Sony to make the PS4 easier to program for. This way more 3rd party titles will be available on release.

    1. They’re not likely going to change anything hardware wise. This is probably for marketing purposes. They’re talking about a reveal, not a release. Sony has already said they do not plan on releasing after the competition like this current gen.

So chances are, they would like to reveal their item after to shape up their marketing technique and highlight what their machine can do. The unique features and the functions that it will be able to do “better” than what was shown before with the competition’s systems.

  24. In all honesty, I would rather see Sony take care of their own business and try to brainstorm ideas and plans for their next system using the new updated technology that is available, but let’s see how this goes.

  25. I truly wish the PS4 and Nextbox will be on-par with the Wii U
The PS2/GCN/XBOX is my favorite generation because you don’t have developers skipping consoles because of graphical power
With that being said, I do plan on getting a Wii U and eventually a PS4

  26. What if Microsoft is thinking the same thing? Let’s wait for Sony and all… We may never see what they’re up till one of them gives up… Now that would be awesome, for Nintendo fans.

Seems to me like Sony’s ensuring they play their cards right. Once they know what’s MS up to, they can up the ante by either adding more features or capabilities. However, this could mean possibly ending up selling the PS4 at a loss again.
