Nintendo Talks New Zelda Wii U, Plus Video

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma told viewers of today’s Nintendo Direct presentation that the new Zelda Wii U will ultimately rethink the conventions of Zelda. Aonuma said that Nintendo want to set aside conventions, get back to basics and create a newborn Zelda so that the players can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise. He went on to say that the game is still a long way off, so we shouldn’t expect it anytime soon. Here’s what he had to say.

“Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to re-think the conventions of Zelda. I’m referring to the expectation that the player is supposed to complete dungeons in a certain order, or that you’re supposed to play by yourself. The things we’ve come to take for granted recently.

“We want to set aside these conventions, get back to basics and create a newborn Zelda so that the players can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise.”

He admitted that Nintendo hadn’t managed to achieve this goal with Skyward Sword. “We had actually worked on this kind of challenge with Skyward Sword, but we weren’t able to put effort into changing the linear path structure of the game.”

“I hope to be able to talk to you in more detail about how it will change after I see it come together a bit more.”

    1. SO I’m guessing that since WindWakerHD is coming out….the NEW ZELDA visuals will be more realistic…. This is a way to please both parties

      1. I think the same, art style Zelda game AND ITS Wind Waker (one of the best games ever made) and a completely new one with “real life like” graphics.

        Atleast, its seams like that….

  1. This game alone, IMHO, will be worth owning a Wii U for…every other game is a bonus for me…I mean, if the rumors are true, dungeons as big as the ocarina of time overworld? SO. MUCH. YES.

    1. Indeed. It’s a brand new game , just look at it . It barely even resembles the old windwaker. They have indeed just redone the graphics of the game entirely and it looks Next gen.

      Those screenshots are jizz worthy.

Windwaker is one of the best Zelda games (apart from that damn tri force fetch quest)

100& System Seller. As soon as people see gameplay and it looks the way it does , it’s a full price AAA release , not just a half assed port. it is to Wiiu what ocarina 3D is to 3DS.

Ocarina 3D is actually the best game on 3DS , so that’s a good omen…

        1. Gawd Nintedward what’s wrong with you? Which normal person comes freehand while watching Zelda graphics? I still remember enough statements from you and other drones that “graphics don’t matter.” then why do you already like the game if you haven’t even played it……sort of. One more question. Why did you take photos from Iwata, Reggie and Miyamotu just to cut out the heads and stick them on naked male bodies? Do those guys really arouse you that much? I can imagine that you already “loved” your Wii U……

      1. I think he’s talking about the new zelda wii u and not windwaker. I’m really excited for both since I didn’t have a GameCube.

        1. That is the one I was referring to…nice to have Wind Waker in HD(though I have it for my Cube), but it’s the new one that makes the Wii U worth every penny…If they make it as good as I know Nintendo can, then, then, well, I don’t really know…it will just be freakin’ amazing, that is the only way I know how to put it.

    1. And some sort of co-op? Probably different than 4 swords, but I would like a new one of those. I want to see what a 3d four swords would be like.

    2. That would be freaking awesome! And what if you could even enter a dungeon that is just way to hard at the moment and you need to do another dungeon first before you could beat that dungeon. Well, than it would have to be an RPG with levels and stuff…

  3. I’m glad he said that he didn’t intend for Skyward Sword to be so linear and they couldn’t quite meet their goal. I love the game, but there’s terribly little to discover in the actual overworld.

  4. Letting us choose what order to attempt the dungeons is in great news, I loved how you could do that back in the NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 days. And the remake of the Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker is great too!

  5. PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY! DON’T BE LIKE MICROSOFT AND FORCE US TO USE THE STUPID TABLET CONTROLS. Please let us choose if we would like the perfect SS controls or the tablet. OMG I said tablet now Reggie will try to tell me how they “change”.

  6. It looks gorgeous. Wind Waker looks beautiful in HD. That game was basically perfect to me, I would love to see how they improve it on Wii U. Leave luck to heaven.

  7. That looks freaking awesome. And honestly I have always liked WW’s art style WAY more than SS’s art style. And this just looks even better :).

  8. they need to remake the n64 ones two in hd those are the ones that need it ,i dont like tp play those games on a handheld so those are the only games nintendo needs to make hd no other bullshit,
