Wii U Virtual Console Details, Plus Nintendo Reveals eShop NES and SNES Deals To Celebrate Famicom’s 30th Anniversary

balloon_fight_titleThe next system update for Wii U, which arrives this spring, will add Virtual console games to the Nintendo eShop for the new console. Nintendo has confirmed that the service will initially include a selection of NES and Super NES games. Consumers who’ve already purchased NES and Super NES games on the Wii console’s Virtual Console will be able to buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES titles. Game Boy Advance games will be added to Wii U’s Virtual Console in the future, according to Nintendo.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Famicom, also known as the NES, Nintendo announced that it will make one NES or Super NES game available each month until July to download for 30 cents from the Nintendo eShop on Wii U. Each game will be available at that reduced price for 30 days. These deals begin today with the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available for 30 cents in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.

    1. Yeah I am hoping for a Mario Sunshine V.C game at some point. Maybe if we are lucky a full scale remake like with Wind Waker!! :D

  1. Looking for some clarification. If the WiiU VC is not due until spring, how will we be playing the title on the WiiU immediately? I haven’t ported any content, expect for Mii’s, from my Wii yet. Am I to understand that the “additional: features associated with WiiU VC (ie. purchasing VC specifc content and gamepad play and MiiVerse integration) are what will be added in Spring then?

    1. They wont be launching the section for VC titles on the WiiU eshop till spring. The current WiiU VC games are only a special promotion for the 30th anniversary for the Nes. Its almost a sneek peek of whats to come.

  2. Look everyone! You can play Ruby & Sapphire on the U soon!.. So we don’t need remakes! ;P
Nintendo is giving gamers very little to complain about. People complaining that Zelda’s always the same heard that we may not have to do dungeons in a set order- we may not have to do them alone (co op)! They’re also realizing the benefits of collaborating in game development. The slow OS is getting fixed, Mario Kart’s on the way (hopefully with the option of two on a Kart like MKDD), but I’m sure someone will find something to complain about… not me!

    1. I dunno, have they confirmed Ruby and Sapphire? You would have thought they would release red and blue on 3DS eshop too then, but I assume they didn’t since you can’t really trade. I assume the same for the Wii U unless they invite some cool way of being able to trade then I’ll be happy. Otherwise I don’t see any pokemon games being released on any eshop. (except X and Y as digital downloads)

  3. . 30 centers for a 30 year old kid game rip off! I of course this will give you nintendo virgins something to do in between jerk off sessions

    1. . 30 centers for a 30 year old badass timeless game! I of course this will give you nintendo guys something to do in between WiiU game sessions.

  4. This article doesn’t quite make sense. It says that the Wii U VC will be added in the next system update later this spring, but then it also says the first Wii U VC game is available today. Isn’t the VC here today then?

    1. This game downloads and plays like any other game in the eShop.

If the Virtual Console service apparently needs a system update, then maybe Nintendo has something bigger in plan for the Virtual Console service on Wii U.

  5. So even though I bought the game already I have to pay twice to play it on Wii u. $1 discount who cares it should be free. This is a bitch move nintendo and it’ll bite you in the ass. Ppl can play all the old games for free on android with much more funcianality using emulator and nintendo wonders what it’s doing wrong

        1. It clearly says “Consumers who’ve already purchased NES and Super NES games on the Wii console’s Virtual Console will be able to buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES titles.” you are only paying a dollar for those games you’ve already purchased.

          1. Well a bit better but seriously don’t you find it ironic nintendos biggest future competitor android is an open platform capable of running nintendo entire.library of games up to n64 on their devices?

  6. it would be nice if all VC games could be played on the gamepad. it is not fair to pay 1 extra dollar if own the wii version just to get wii u version.

  7. This is mostly good news! But why should we have to pay extra to play games we already own? Nintendo needs to MERGE the Wii and Wii U eshops into ONE! Its madness that there is going to two at all!

Other than that though, I’m excited about everything else! Zelda Wind Waker looks fantastic!
