Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has explained to investors and analysts just how they intend to implement Near Field Communication technology with Wii U. Iwata reconfirmed that we should see some NFC based software later this year that will showcase exactly how the functionality will work on Wii U. He concluded by saying that since they have made a certain investment in order to install NFC, they will make efforts to at least receive a return on their investments. Here’s what he said.
“First of all, there are two main directions when it comes to the use of NFC. One is to use it for video games. For example, we can create cards and figurines with NFC and design our video games to work in conjunction with them. Also, an increasing number of arcade games are utilizing IC cards which can read and write data in order to record users’ scores and it is possible for Wii U games to connect with them. We are in talks with several software developers regarding such possibilities. We are making preparations and, by the end of this year, we will probably be able to show you some output, tell you about some more concrete examples of the possibilities or even let you try out some tangible examples. The other direction is e-money. In Japan e-money called FeliCa is widely used, and FeliCa is included in NFC. Technically, it is possible to settle an account by waving an e-money card over the Wii U GamePad. We are conducting research into this right now as one of this technology’s future possibilities. We will make an announcement when we are ready to discuss a more detailed plan. Since we have made a certain investment in order to install NFC, we will make efforts to at least receive a return on our investment.”

The best and worst thing they could do with NFC:
Make a Pokemon game along the lines of Skylanders
Thought they kindof explored this with the e-card reader years ago and pokemon cards. I thought that was a great idea, hope it makes a return. Nintendo I doubt will exploit it, but just allow people with the cards / toys etc to get bonuses in the games more easily, but that are still possible to obtain without such. Perhaps with rare cards giving exclusives, but perhaps like the original Charizard pokemon cards, being relatively rare.
I would like them to integrate nfc into their pokemon cards and make another Pokemon TCG game for the wiiu.
Even though I”m 21, I would buy the shit outta those cards just like I did when I was in Elementary School.
Hm, thats actually a very good idea. If they DID do that though, i would hope it would be for all the cards released, not just the most recent ones, then it would actually be really epic.

NFC booster packs would be great.
I would buy them again! 14 years later! Nintendo have a massive opportunity to use this system with RPG / Adventure games, while creating a market / physical game outside of the video game. They could use it to expand back into trading cards and toys.

Nfc, big deal! I would much rather have good challenging games like resident evil silent hill bio shock and CASTLEVANIA and we’ll the list goes on. I what a joke. Lay an action against figure on the controller and watch the screen change, maybe if we just put flashing strobe lights in a room you nintendo fans would be just as happy. This is an ebarrassment thst any console maker would do this.

I dont want NFC for entire games nor for emoney. I want like awesome save data. For example i can let my friend borrow my pokemon instead of trade by saving it there. Or i can save a copy of “me” like in harvest moon (animal parade) for my farming rank. And more importantly the island in animal crossing gamecube and some rare yugioh cards. Yeah
Huh… that sounds rather interesting actually. What garners my attention the most is the IC cards and the e-money. I’d like to see them exploit that feature
