Giants Software‘s Marc Schwegler told NowGamer he thinks that sales for Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U, may eventually surpass the sales for its predecessor, the Wii, which is steadily nearing 100 million units sold. Schwegler says the Wii U has a lot of untapped potential and that it will become more popular when developers take full advantage of its primary controller, the Wii U GamePad. In its first couple months of being on the market, Nintendo sold over three million Wii U consoles. Do you think it’s possible for the Wii U to outsell the Wii?
“I think it should do as well as the Wii, maybe even better.
“It’s difficult to say, it’s really depending on what games they will add that really use the extra device you get with it.
“There’s a lot of potential that’s not tapped yet, if it is and if it will be then I think it could be more popular than the Wii because it’s something more.
“Wii motion was okay, everybody copied it but it’s done, people are returning to regular controllers because it’s easier to play and you have much more options.
“A touch device, you could put a whole set of controls on there.”

Anyway, on a side note, I’m not knocking the Wii U – I love it – but I find it a little strange that it’s mainly the small devs that keep saying positive things about the Wii U. It’s just… strange.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. You think of new, fresh ideas that sold millions, and you’ll think of Minecraft, Limbo, The Walking Dead, Journey, etc. All these small, indie devs are what’s big right now, and I, and I’m sure many others, don’t think that it’s a temporary thing.
I have been playing indie games for decades. Long before they became “cool” this generation. There are tons of great indie games out there.
That’s not my point though and to be real, most of the indie devs who praise the Wii U put out games taht aren’t all that great. :/
But once again, I love the Wii U and am sure it will pick up a lot of steam soon.
Well they need to learn the ropes and what better place than in a friendly enviroment.
You have made a great point, Simply G. I too love the Wii U. It’s not just the HD graphics and the apps included with the hardware… but also the versatility of the GamePad, indie games, and the quality of its product. I’m sure the future is gonna be brighter for Nintendo’s newest console… and the best is yet to come.
I presume the reason a lot of the smaller devs are being positive about Nintendo is because Nintendo is offering more to them than Sony and Microsoft currently. The bigger devs probably aren’t because a lot of the major developers have turned to more violent games recently and Nintendo doesn’t really excel in violence.

Of course there’s been a few, but no where near as many on the other consoles and not as successful as on the other consoles.
Developers claim Wii U is the most indie friendly platform yet. I don’t know too much about why, but if this is true, then I think Wii U is set. Indie devs are becoming much more profitable than AAA studios these days, and are coming out with much more original ideas as well, whereas major studios are pretty much suffering from sequelitis. Heck, the only original AAA title I’ve seen from a major studio recently is Watch Dogs.
P.S. Watch Dogs looks amazing.
I wondered about that too, but I also agree with the Wii U not tapped into its full potential…this is a make it or break it year for Nintendo.

Nope. Kids are playing COD these days and not on Wii U. Mothers dont usually game…they have a family to take care of. Plus age has nothing to do with success.
I don’t know about the mothers don’t usually game. When I was growing up, my mum would always look after me and she’d spend half the time playing Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot. Even now, she plays games all the time, such as NFS Most Wanted and the new Tomb Raider.

From which perspective though? Something that’s popylar with casuals isn’t neccessarily popular with the “core gamer” market.
Honestly, the other 2 consoles, 720 in particular, are going to have a hard time keeping their relevancy, because we have PC, xbox AND playstation all doing the EXACT same thing, same multiplats. Sony has a few good exclusives, although Uncharted got stale after 2, and others are loosing their touch, and PC has it’s exclusives, although frankly they aren’t for everyone, while xbox has…halo, if it even tries to be good anymore.
But unless you’re insane, or have too much money, there’s no way someone is going to own 2 of those platforms because there’s no point, or be it from a stupud elitist fanboy opinion.
Nintendo should, and hopefully squeeze themselves in as “that other console”, that’s unique in it software and user inferface ect, all the time online i hear people saying, “going ps4 and WiiU next gen”, or “going PC and WiiU next gen” (you get the idea).

Are regular controllers EASIER TO PLAY? Is the guy joking? Wii remote and nunchuck are the best combination ever invented. Just for an instance, it is dramatically better to play FPS games (although I don’t enjoy them) with motion controls. Pretty simple and natural. But “hardcore” gamers barely know that – or pretend not to know.

I was talking about dedicated devices, i.e., home consoles. Not exactly PC. But, indeed, keyboard and mouse are just fine.
But I do not share the same opinion regard to motion controllers: they are way better than anything else ever released.
Keyboard and mouse? Sorry, but that is the worst control scheme to me no matter what genre except for typing.
lol Keyboard and mouse is the WORST thing to play a videogame with. It is the hardest to learn and remember the keys. It is the worst(physically) on your body(ex: arms and wrists). Using a mouse is AWKWARD AS HELL! It is really difficult to get used to moving a cursor with a mouse. I can’t imagine trying to use it in a fast paced FPS…
I really don’t like to play on PC. But I think he tried to say that using the mouse to target and shoot was supposed to be the easiest way possible.
Keyboards and mouse only for FPS. Regular controllers for most games. The motion controllers were used particularly well by Nintendo games, such as WarioWare: Smooth Moves. I still can’t think of any motion control game that I got so much fun out of.

If motion controls would work better than even SS and with everything else it would own.
Though I admit it was a bit frustrating sometimes recalibrating the wii motion plus…the game itself made it worth it, if Nintendo improves these things, it will almost be flawless…

Yeah and it is more expensive so I do not think that it will end up selling as well as the Wii, but I do love my deluxe. This needs more of the support of the small indie companies and also needs to secure more of its games. On the other hand I think that nintendo will do really well when it releases its own big games without the support of these as people buy nintendo systems for their epic games.
price isn’t a huge factor really. People will buy what they want regardless of price(to an extent). Also, $350-$300 is affordable. It isn’t like it is $500 or whatever the price will be for the PS4… :P

As much as i love hearing positive news about the wii u, this statement is just silly. Better than the wii? I bet not even Nintendo believes this :) And giants-software is not the best developer in the world. They made such “hits” like….hmmm…”farming simulator” :)

I think that within at least 1 more year, the Wii U will be a lot more known and popular. Shame it has to take that long though. Nintendo went about it wrong from the very beginning with their lack of advertising and lack of store demo units. They STILL don’t have any of those in any stores where I live. And there aren’t really any games that are exciting until Pikmin 3 comes out.
