Retail Says Wii U “Hasn’t Caught The Public’s Imagination Yet”

UK trade publication MCV has spoken to a number of mainstream retailers in the United Kingdom to find out exactly what they think of Wii U, and how the current situation can be changed. The Wii U has failed to take off in the United Kingdom as not a single Wii U exclusive game has charted in the UK all-formats top 40 during 2013. Here’s what the retailers want from Nintendo.

“Wii U has not caught the public’s imagination yet,” Tesco games buying manager Jonathan Hayes

“We need a killer app to drive sales, and a big marketing push to clearly communicate what Wii U is all about – it will probably be better to focus on the premium edition to do this.”

Sainsbury’s games buying manager Gurdeep Hunjan added: “A new strategy needs to be communicated and launched for Easter, the school holidays, the summer holidays and beyond.”

ShopTo buyer James Rowson said: “Nintendo needs to show there’s a wide range of games available and on the horizon so consumers see Wii U as a good long-term investment.”

  1. Shady retailers want a wiiu price drop so they can still keep it overpriced and rape our wallets. Thats the way of uk sales.

  2. It certainly hasn’t caught mine. It’s the first Nintendo console I didn’t buy on launch. And all because the available games are all CRAP to me.

    1. If you say it like this, then Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 should have “failed” too! Because, frankly, which launchgame was really great? Nevertheless, I can´t remember the media having said that PS3/Xbox 360 will fail, because of poor sales or no great games.

    2. I’m having a blast with mine. Only Fire Emblem Awakening has managed to pull me away from the WiiU.
The browser and Miiverse are addicting as hell.
I’ll give you that the game selection will need to grow to give the system additional traction, but it’s such a fun machine.

      1. Yeah, I have about 30 hours in Nintendo Land ALONE and that´s ONLY singleplayer! Add multiplayer to this, plus NSMBU, ZombiU and Miiverse, and you´ll know what I´m talking about :)

  3. ugh GIVE THE NEGATIVE ARTICLES A REST SICKR!! geez u want trolls to come don’t you? We need more moderators and admins on this site the trolling and bad articles are outrageous here

  4. I played the NSMBU at Best Buy and I could easily switch between looking at my controller or the TV screen. I see a lot of potential with the system and I have even invented a few ideas here and there for it, mostly for Zelda Wii U. It’s a good system but they need to pump out something like Super Mario Galaxy III onto it. there’s a lot they can do for SMGIII with the controller.

  5. Haha Tesco. They just bundle the games in the Wii section. Its not like the Wii U ones are even all on one shelf there are just a few littered blue cases every so often in amongst the white Wii ones.

    1. The sales will start to pick up once i got money to buy one. I will start saving to get 1 starting next month if God allows it.

  6. Well that is the kind of shit that happen when you do not advertise your product enough.

I’m completely serious here, I have only seen, for only a week, a lame commercial that do not even make clear the fact that the Wii U is a completely new and more powerful console that the Wii.

WTF is wrong with you Nintendo?

  7. The UK game market sucks though, so whatever. They’ve also neglected to release some of the games over there, so it’s hurting. Nintendo needs to start putting out the exclusives and stop holding them back, like Pikmin 3. That should’ve been ready for launch, not “launch window”. There’s nothing to really support the Wii U besides a few exclusives (what is it, four?) and a bunch of ports that are either really bad or just okay….
