Cliff Bleszinski, the former Epic Games design director and creator of the Gears of War franchise, believes that Nintendo could well become a software only company in the next few years. Bleszinski says that the state of the entire games industry is currently in turmoil and both Sony and Microsoft are about to come to major blows. Here’s what he had to say.
“This business has not been in a state of transition like it is right now since the video game crash of the ’80s. I really think we’re in a massive state of turmoil. I think Nintendo could possibly be faced with the situation of becoming a company that only makes software moving forward. I think Sony and Microsoft are about to come to major blows. But at the same time, people love playing games on their iPad. The PC is going through a wonderful renaissance right now. I think we’re ready to do digital download games all the time…I just want to see what happens. In regards to the industry, it’s like the Super Smash Bros. of business right now, and I want to see if Peach or Mario wins.”

If they can only make game on their own hardware, they’re not good programmers. That’s like a web developer who only develops for one browser; it’s easy to make sure your website works fine with just Firefox, but the real talent comes in making it work for ALL browsers.
Nintendo CAN make good games for other hardware, they just are too stubborn to even try or put the effort in. Besides, their hardware sucks compared to others. And besides, didn’t other devs say Wii U is extremely similar to XBOX 360? Both PowerPC architecture, right? What’s the big difference?
It’s a lame excuse by Nintendo to keep making their own inferior-powered consoles. Just look at Wii U compared to PS4. It’s the same as Wii Vs PS3 all over again. Not only that, but the only new thing Nintendo is doing is the tablet screen. Sony announced tons of new innovations: play downloaded games as they’re downloading, play PS5 games on Vita ANYWHERE, etc.

The last gen was quite kind to Nintendo, but there were quite a few problems with third parties that really caused issues and lead to poor porting. It did get better but you don’t see 3rd parties running to the Wii U now.
Money in the bank means nothing. If they keep making consoles that are behind the times, they’ll start loosing more money than they make. Just because they’ve got money in the bank doesn’t mean they’ll wait till it runs out to make a business model change. If you knew the first thing about running a business, you’d know that.

It won’t always be selling at a loss. Manufacturing costs will go down and I think they’ll refuse to do a price cut. As long as they bring out Mario, Mario Kart, and Zelda, the Wii U will do fine even if it doesn’t sell as many consoles as the Wii.

Ok, Nintendo went through a rough spot for the past couple of years, I get it, but that’s normal. But if you seriously think that their current situation is bad enough for them to even remotely consider dropping any form of their hardware division to save the company, you are dead wrong. I am not a Nintendo fanboy, I am simply telling it how it is. People call doom and gloom on Nintendo constantly, just like they did with the N64 and Gamecube ironically, without even realizing how rich this company is. But the console is still in its release window, so let’s just see what happens over the course of the year before we call doom on the system. After all, look at how much the PS3 picked up after its disastrous launch.

It is NOT turning out to be the Wii, and I thought people would see that by now! The WiiU can at least do what the 360/PS3 can, and considering the extremely higher running graphics card, architecture to compensate for the CPU and the RAM, that even just for the games is 4x that of the PS3, the Wii to PS360 480p to 1080p won’t be repeated.
Even in games, game development prices are rising like wildfire. And yes, sometimes Nintedward can be a little biased, but in this case he is absolutely correct; absolute WORST case scenario, we get lots gorgeous first party titles and we wait for the ninth gen. But I’m absolutely sure Nintendo will do (and will succeed) at not letting that happen.

Remember the SNES days, Nintendo also didn’t bring out games that much but the time between the big Nintendo gems was filled with all the 3rd party games.

It only depends on the support the Wii U gets but the support depends on the hardware power the Wii U has. Since wednesday we all know that the Wii U is overall inferior to the PS4 and THIS is the point where everything can be good or bad. If devs are ok with altering amd optimizing code for the Wii U the system’s life will be a golden age. If devs say “No we would need to completely downgrade the whole game” the Wii U might end up being a failure.

GameCube sold 22 million units, but Nintendo still got profit from the amazing console.
The irony is that the Gamecube came from a generation where console parity was much closer, yet it’s one of their worst performing within the last decade. The Wii and the Wii U, not to mention the DS and possibly even the 3DS, are both weaker than their competitors yet performed much better.

Yeah, Nintendo might loose the potential to become number 1, but the fact is, with the rise of PC gaming, and Steam Box, 4 seperate system doing the EXACT same thing isnt going to last long, let alone 5. Nintendo might not reach massive sales, but they’ll still be around by being “your cheaper second console”.

I imagine Microsoft next gen just supporting PC’s, in order to challenge Valve (MS wont win), because Valve is doing more than taking their game market.

No that won’t happen because Nintendo has a mind of their own. They want THEIR games on THEIR hardware. The only thing that can get in the way of the Wii U’s success is the much discussed hardware topic. But a lot of people out there gotbit wrong. It’s not the graphical capabilities the Wii U can offer and it’s the gap to the other systems which isn’t small at all. It’s no problem for 1st party games and their quality because an E6670 is IMO a good GPU and Nintendo knows their hardware very well. Powerful hardware is essential to get multiplatform games because a dev won’t alter code that much just to get it up and running on the Wii U.
Not if us Nintendo fans have anything to say about it.
The chance of Nintendo becoming software is as big as the chance that Pachter will say intelligent stuff and predictions about the Wii U.

Explain to me why it is always Nintendo they say this to? Last time I checked Sony and microsofts financial situation as far as video games are concerned is worse the Nintendo. But you never hear people say “hey maybe Sony should go software only. They certainly have the ip’s for it.” If Microsoft where to go software only they’d probably fade into obscurity because sure they got halo. But that’s the only game I can think of that is popular enough to sustain their presence when they theoretically go software only.
I’m not worried about Nintendo at all. They always pull through and they are far to stubborn to leave the business. When Nintendo pulls out its really big cards and maybe makes a small price drop the Wii U will start selling like hot-cakes.
Microsoft and Sony on the other hand however might be in bigger trouble than people think. The ps4 has very little new to it. Sure it has power but that comes with a price. High cost. I do not think people will buy a ps4 when they have s PC. The Xbox I can’t speak for but it will have a Kinect and more powerful hardware than Wii U as well.I’m sure of it. It might attract the younger audience.

I don’t see this happening, Wii sold many and made profit. 3DS started bad and is moving to the right direction and Wii U could just do the exact same. They proved they mean buisiness with the announcements of games from Wii U and 3DS Direct. I see them doing much more consoles in future cause sooner or later, people will finally go to them like this latest generation has been.
I have no worries :) Wii had a slow start the Ds and 3ds had slow starts :) so the WiiU is just taking its time like every Nintendo system before them :) it will sell great soon :)

The only reason Microsoft and Sony are surviving is because of shooter games. Nintendo is the only real videogame company that is not only selling shooter games but also family friendly games that will continue to sell because of younger kids.

Also, Nintendo has a lot of moves they can make to become more profitable. If Nintendo makes an IP that brings people to play online multiplayer with any of there franchises, they could own online core multiplayer, they haven’t even tried yet.

I thought Cliff was smarter than this. I guess not. He’s bought into the hype just like everyone else has of Nintendoom. Nintendo has outlasted everyone for 40 years. They aren’t going anywhere. Period. The Wii U will do just fine and 5 years from now Nintendo will release a new console. If any of the big three has a chance at bowing out, it is Sony. They are going to take HEAVY losses on the PS4 console sales for a LONG TIME. If there is nothing about the PS4 to convince the casuals and non-gamers to purchase one then all the PS4 will have is the core and that audience is not enough to make a device that is selling at a loss turn a profit.
Sony’s market cap is hovering around 13 billion dollar. All three companies will continue to lose money as the world economy gets worse, but if the PS4 fails to do at least the numbers of the PS3 that would put the entire company into financial oblivion. I’m not saying it will happen, but the facts are that if any company were to drop out from making consoles Sony would go long before Nintendo.
That’s the thing with Nintendo: instead of trying to predict the demise of their rivals, they… MAKE GAMES (woot). I think a lot of talented developpers should, say, try to build a system or just create a second successful franchise before trying to understand the position Nintendo has in the videogame industry.
Nintendo is a COLOSSUS. People from every horizon have been dissing them since the N64 era and where are they today? On top of them all.
Nintendo doesn’t need itself or its minions trying to disprove Sony or Microsoft. They just shut up ad do what they’re the best at: making kickass videogames.
