Go back 5 years and no one gave a damn about anything other than the Wii and DS anywhere in the world. Nintendo have slowed down in the West, but look at the 3DS. It’s sold 30 million in 2 years worldwide. Neither the PS3 or 360 even got close to this. The 3DS holds Nintendo up on its own, covering any kind of loss on the Wii U.

Wrong, PS4 will be around about $400 at best since its not using hardware made by two different companies which manufacturing costs meant that the PS3 had to be set higher because of its hardware.
PS4’s hardware however is being made by a single company meaning that its a lot more cheaper to manufacture the PS4 whilst keeping the power of the system very high.

Also the GPU is a tri-core in the Wii U
PS4 CPU is an Eight-core which though clocked the same has more space to move about in.
RAM in the Wii U is rumored to be a DDR4 2GB which isn’t too bad considering the RAM in the next Xbox is DDR3 but in the PS4 its GDDR5 which is a more modern type of RAM that is usual only for GPUs.

Just before I answer, I hope that you, instead of just arguing for the sake of it, actually look at facts. I’ve seen some sensible posts from you before, but some other really stupid ones have made no sense whatsoever.
Anyway,
1. The Playstation 4 is marginally more powerful. No one’s denying that.
2. Most of the early PS4 ‘footage’ was the PC build of that game, and yes, the actual PS4 footage was great too.
3. The WiiU is not only in an early stage, the Zelda Tech Demo (which was on an underpowered dev kit) looks great, NFS uses PC assets, and the pure specs prove that it can, indeed, outperform the PS3 and 360, and significantly so.
The point I was making is this. Yes, the PS4 is much, much more powerful than the WiiU. No one said otherwise. However, the WiiU will be able to pump out much, much, better visuals than that in Uncharted 1, 2 and 3, and that’s pretty darn undeniably pretty.
And for pure graphics indulgence, I have my PC.
So in conclusion, the only trump the Playstation 4 holds is its exclusives, and to be honest, that’s not worth over 400 (I’d say more than 600 for us in Australia, the original PS3 at release was hitting 800-1000) dollars.
1 retail Jaguar chip has 4 cores and is a small upgrade of the weak bobcat, fact. The tricore in the WiiU outperforms this chip by a significant margin, fact. The Ps4 contains 2 of these Jag chips taped together, fact. The Ps4 will use a miniumum of 2 of the 8 cores dedicated to run the OS, fact. The ps4 has 8gb of gddr5 ram, fact. The ram is shared between the gpu and cpu, fact.
The gamepad = best.controller.ever, fact.
The ps4 controller = worst.controller.ever, fact.
*By the time the ps4 produces graphics that will be significantly better then the WiiU, Nintendo will be unveiling the Wii3(hopefully they drop the Wii name, but whatever) which will obsolete the ps4.

2: Err the only “PC footage” shown for the PS4 was Watch_Dogs and probably Square Enix’s Luminous demo (I don’t think they confirmed if it was or not). Killzone, DriveClub, Infamous were all real time and the former even demonstrated gameplay which was shown to be actual gameplay on Jimmy Fallon. Deep Down was an IN-ENGINE demo that was run on the PS4 as well.
3: The Zeldo demo was 30 fps, 720p, no AA and in a closed environment. Are you…retarded? This “underpowered dev kit” excuse is fucking old and retarded as shit too. Also no, NFS MW only has those better textures due to more ram and time to polish up the Wii U version, now let’s look at DriveClub which is likely a launch window game and ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATES THAT RACER VISUALLY.

I like Nintendo and Sony, but I bought a PS3 and have been majorly disappointed by it. For the first few years, I had very few games, whereas I had to buy another shelf for my Wii games, and as time went on, I bought less Wii games, but more PS3. Even so, I have a shelf of Wii games and another that is half Wii, half PS3, mostly due to PS3 games pushing towards multiplayer. Unfortunately, my kind of gaming is completely single-player, because as a child, I always played games to get away from the real world and not to play games with other people. Eh, times change, I guess.

So if the Wii U were to fail and shiyeet, that would leave them with (Depending on how many years it will take them to launch new consoles) 5-6 MORE consoles generations AFTER the Wii U. They have AT LEAST 5-6 more console generations, and each of those new consoles AFTER the Wii U could all fail too until they would go bankrupt. Nintendo won’t be going 3rd party soon.

Forbes has been writing a lot of crap articles lately. I saw a discussion over this very topic on twitter. First off, Forbes’s article proves that they have very little knowledge of the gaming community. Second, they group in mobile phone/facebook gaming in with big title gaming. The big three gaming companies do not make their products based off of what Apple and other companies of that nature are doing. The big three are competing amongst themselves and are not worried about people buying phones as much as they are trying to prevent people from turning away from their devices for gaming.

Hmm, I was thinking of the same thing a while ago. It does make sense. Unless nintendo can do what they did with the 3DS but for the wii U, I don’t see how they can last much longer making consoles. In fact I believe that if nintendo soley made games as a third party dev, they would make a lot more money then sega ever did/does as a third party dev. Playing halo, gears of war and pokemon/mario/zelda/metroid on the console would be a dream. I think the only way Nintendo can stay relevant making consoles is if they really go all out with the wii U and create a continuous stream of high quality games, new IPs, and multiplatform titles. Its too early to tell but I feel this is wht they plan to do if they observed their strategies with saving the 3DS. Now something I think they should do is just take the handheld route, but instead of only being playable on the small screen, you should be able to stream the game to your television(via something similar to the wii sensor bar). This way you have a handheld that acts as your home console as well. This is why I believe the nintendo handheld development team is moving in with the console team. I have a feeling they want to change their future of gaming similar to this.

That ‘s same mistake they made with the PS3 though. The put the expensive BLU-RAY player in the PS3 hoping that BLU-RAY would do for the PS3 what DVD did for the PS2 and CD did for the PS1. The problem is, all people needed was a TV set for the PS1 and 2 to work. Everyone that bought a PS1 and PS2 had a TV. However everyone that went to the store to look at the PS3 did NOT have an HDTV because they were still too expensive for the average joe. Even core gamers did have them in abundance. Its wasn’t until the prices of HDTVs started to come down that you saw the sales of the PS3 and 360 take off. By the time 4K TVS will be anywhere close to being reasonable for the average person we’ll be at the 9th gen.

This is entirely true. Sony was smart not to focus on bringing 4K to games, as it would require a lot more power.
It does support 4K, for exactly what you mentioned.
When you consider that probably half of the memory and CPU cores will be dedicated to multitasking of non-gaming elements of the PS4, it kinda knocks the specs down a little bit. It’s still got more under the hood than the Wii U no doubt with will run a longer race before running out of gas, but after letting the shock-and-awe dissipate it’s not exactly the monster Sony is selling it to be.
Good gaming isn’t about specs, Sony will fail again by overpowering their console. Good gameplay is the key, when the good games for Wii U come out, it’ll by a killer machine.

If gaming is moving to mobile then that means that people are now open to less powerful medium to get their craving for games as long as they are entertained. That is exactly how Wii U is right now compared to other next gen consoles. And that is why the controller is a gamepad/touchscreen to entice that same audience who likes tablets but also wants deeper gaming experience from time to time. It will cater to ALL markets. Nintendo is future-proofing the console with these controls as anytime if they want to, they can sell games through eShop very casual games like angry birds, etc. and those same audience won’t be alienated.
Plus apps like those of android and IOS. In fact angry birds is coming to wii u soon and it has some sort of google maps already….

what is everyone talking about? The specs for the PS4 are not impressive. It’s a low to mid grade PC. Only thing it has going for it is the 8GB of fast ram. But the CPU and GPU are low-mid grade PC parts. APU’s aren’t powerhouses when it comes to the GPU performance. You have to remember, Sony loves to put out specs with “theoretical” values, not real life values. I’m pretty confident the Wii U’s dedicated GPU will give the PS4’s integrated GPU a run for it’s money. Just wait for someone to put out a PS4 emulator for PC’s and people will have no reason to get a PS4. That thing should be easy to emulate on the PC.

Now, with the Wii U, many flaws are gone, giving Nintendo a good future in my eyes. Nintendo has HD now, it can play the blu ray disc games now. Both of these hurt Wii a lot. The online functions are better, blasting away anything PS3 and friends could do. This console is much more developer friendly than Wii. Social network. Tablet controller. First Party games that WILL sell a console, SSB4 being the biggest one. This console generation will push Nintendo to make the best games it ever has. It should also get more 3rd party coverage than it has in a while. Plus the console is literally also a Wii. Also I’m posting from one right now. I always browse on Wii U now. First of all most devs don’t care about an “underpowered” system, the Dreamcast is still getting support to this day. The 720 is rumored to be not much more powerful than Wii U. A lot of devs hate having to risk resources on making big games simply for “power”, because of rising budgets.

People are still “making” games for the DC, I use the term make loosely because it’s either some overhead racing game or a horizontal-scrolling space shooter, think gradius.
While they are technically games, the development time for them is just too long; it’s great to see fans still making games for a great system that was ahead of it’s time but it’s a plug that should have been disconnected long ago. They remain unnoticed to those outside of the DC scene, which is pretty much everybody.
That’s just my opinion though. The only benefit I see from “making” games for DC is to just test out your development skills before moving on the “Bigger, Badder” engines and whatnots.
In layman’s term, people be “hacking” them DCs and wanting new games and fans “deliver”.

It’s easy to compare games with cellphones and say cellphones sells more! of course! they CELLPHONES! everybody has a cellphone, games are mainstream now, and everything has games, but consoles and handhelds are not going ANYwhere, Before this generation is over, people will hardly believe what Nintendo will achieve with the WiiU, just like the 3DS.
I agree with you, while I understand the worry over the fact that the Wii U has failed to meet expectation, I think it’s still too early to jump the gun and say that Nintendo will go 3rd Party or that the Wii U is the new DC or whatever people will say about Nintendo and it’s endeavors.
Honestly I have a cellphone and I don’t play any games on it. I’ve never even played Angry Birds, I know what it is, which is the reason why I don’t play it…not that it’s a bad game, just not my cup of tea. I rather play a game with more substance to it, don’t get it mistaken with graphics though, I rather take a great game lacking in the graphics department but with much thought and love put into it than a game that just yells “Hey buy me! I have cool graphics!” a la FF XIII or whatever number it is…ummm the one with the goofy named characters; Lightning and Snow BUT I also don’t want something too simple, such as any mini game collection, think Nintendo Land, or as I previously stated Angry Birds.

Just like the first time people heard the Wii name, they laughed, said Nintendo was doomed, but once Nintendo showed what Wii was about, everybody wanted to play it.
All this talk about Nintendo and WiiU after 3 months with only the line up games and a few other, and even after the PS4 reveal, people just don’t stop talking about the WiiU, its a mistery! its the still unknow console. is it powerfull? will it have support? once Nintendo show, what the system can do, just like it did with the Wii, people will see what’s power is about! what they were missing on HD gamming. not just cool graphics, but what HD can do with gameplay improvements and innovations, things that I’m sure was neglected on current gen, because they focused too much on graphics over gameplay.

If said “graphics firepower” was the most important thing, then why is the 3DS outselling the vita like 10 to 1? and why did the wii outsell both the 360 and PS3? With 11 billion in the bank and the wii u only costing the company 1.5 billion, how exactly are they going to stop making consoles?

In these times it isn’t very smart to have a console that can barely sell 10.000 units a month, i get that, but i strongly believe that with this E3 coming up, with some of Sakurai’s projects revealed, perhaps a sneek peek at other stuff, hopefully Monolith Soft’s project will be revealed in more detail!
It doesn’t really mean jack shit if Nintendo goes out of business as such, but they still have the 3DS, which is looking to become even more popular than it’s predecessor, so i think they can fall back on that, Sega didn’t have that oppurtinity! Sega had multiple failues before the Dreamcast, that had cost them a lot! Nintendo’s GameCube wasn’t a succes as such, but it was followed by the Wii and DS, which are two of the best selling consoles of all time… i do not believe that Nintendo are THAT ignorant. When the Wii U gets it popular franchises, it’ll get it’s momentum (even though the internet has somehow created this idea that Mario and Zelda can in fact get old and stale… lol then you SERIOUSLY don’t own a Nintendo product, that’s for sure!)
The Wii U is a great machine, it has taken me back to console gaming, and the time i spend on core games will be on the PC, but the time i spend on good old fun for fun games will be on the Wii U! Nothing beats a good Mario game, and heck i have had a lot of fun with Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed! Still playing Xenoblade, and that’s a pretty serious game, one of the best JRPG’s of this gen, so if you’re on this site to convince me that i’m wrong, because Forbes says something – a company that’s doesn’t really have anything to do with the business, or know the strategies – then go away, you clearly don’t own a Wii U, you’re clearly biased as fuck, and you’re a graphics whore, i know you disagree with that, but WHAT does better hardware do? False. Nintendo can not exist with out Nintendo Hardware. Nintendo hardware is innovative and fun. Even if it is “underpowered” They will always have innovation on their side. Wii U is going to be just like 3DS… It was kinda slow the first few months. but after it picks up a bunch of games, it will turn into a fantastic console, like no other. I’m sure the PS360 II will be cute but generally speaking, Im sure it will be more of the same. Except with Kinect, and move and smart glass things. Which I’m sure is going to try to be the Gamepad…. But I dont see it working as smoothly and nearly as well as the gamepad does. BUT back to the original point. Nintendo is original, they need an original console, if hardware goes, Nintendo goes. End of story. Nintendo is classy like that. Not that we have anything to worry about.

1. The Dreamcast is not what caused Sega to stop making consoles. It was the combination of: DC+ Sega Saturn + Sega CD + all the shitty add-ons to the Genesis (32x, if you want an example) that got them bankrupt. Even if the Wii U ends up failing, it’s gonna take much more than that to end Nintendo seeing as the Wii sold a lot and they’re still strong with handheld gaming which brings me to my second point…
2. I’m not gonna hold my words back this time. Shut. The. Fuck. Up. about cellphones and tablets taking over the handheld market. No one, I repeat, no one buy these with the sole intention of playing games, they’re just a little plus for people who get bored while taking a crap. Besides, all of the games you find on these are purely casual. Can you picture playing Persona 4 Golden on the Ios? Or Fire Emblem Awakening on an android? Or Zelda on the Ipod Touch?
3. The Wii U not being as powerful as the 360 or PS3…honestly I don’t see where analysts are getting that from. And I’m not being a fanboy here; I had no plans of getting a Wii U until that recent conference that showcased a lot of awesome games. If they’re assuming this based on the launch titles here’s two things
– The 360 and PS3 launch titles weren’t all that impressive either, graphically speaking. They’re still in the first phase of the console and many developers stated that the console was very powerful.
-Power isn’t what sells a console, rather new ideas. I was underwhelmed by the PS4 because the ”innovation” it showed seemed very superficial: gamers aren’t all that shallow. You need to add more than graphics or frames per seconds to sell something new. While the Wii U game pad isn’t that innovating, it shows Nintendo at least tries to add another perspective on gaming and developers will have a good reason to produce exclusives for it.
Get my points? Those kind of guys need to get their damn heads out of their asses and stop assuming drastic crap like that will ever happen.

This article is full of $#!%, The Wii U isn’t as powerful as PS4, but it’s NOT the Wii vs PS3 all over again. Not by a long shot. The Wii U is much more powerful than PS3/360, and once the ports stop, OR if the ports are done right like Criterion did with NFS:MW, and games for Wii U AND PS4 are shown together, like Watch Dogs, this stupid argument will be put to rest. They are not going the way of SEGA. SEGA lost lots of money on the 32X, the SEGA CD, and the Saturn, before they gave up during the Dreamcast’s life cycle. Nintendo hasn’t taken a loss on hardware ever, up until the 3DS price cut. Even now the 3DS is selling at a profit. The Wii U won’t be a loss much longer, unless they cut the price sooner rather than later, but it doesn’t matter much because other than last year, Nintendo has only operated with profits, and have a huge stockpile of cash. SEGA didn’t have that.
This idea that iPad sales being higher than 3DS sales means something, is a misnomer, and utter crap. Oh really? You mean a tablet has sold more than a gaming device? A phone has sold more than a gaming device? Big deal. Lots of people want to browse the internet, skype, make phone calls and use apps. That’s why they buy that overpriced apple junk. (I own an iphone 5 and yes, it’s vastly overpriced for what it is) Gaming on those devices is an after thought. Nobody says “gee, let me go buy a $600 iPad to play cut the rope and angry birds! That said, the 3DS is on pace to be the best selling video game hardware EVER, but somehow that’s meaningless these days. Unfortunately it will never be put to rest because people don’t care about facts. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here. People hate for hate’s sake. Not because they have tangible reason. People complained about the 3DS being too expensive. Nintendo lowered the price. People complained about the lack of games for the 3DS, Nintendo started rolling out a lot of games. People complained about it not having a second circle pad. Nintendo made an attachment for a second circle pad. People complained about the 3ds being too small. Nintendo made the 3DS XL.
For the moment people have run out of excuses to complain about for the 3DS, but you get my point. No matter what Nintendo does people aren’t going to be satisfied. If Nintendo made every change people claim they want on the Wii U, they still will complain.

Look at Wii is an old tech but still we surprise what the company just did. Also developers make some surprisingly good games to this old tech. Also on 3DS, they manage to sell well in this generation even on the rise of gaming tablet and phone. In life or business sometimes we face falldown but doesn’t mean you have to give up. Nintendo always keep making good games, they keep innovating and proving themselves worthy as an gaming company and people will eventually find its place again in Nintendo’s Gaming World. So Wii U will have it’s own success for good. I’m not dreamin but I have found gaming is to have fun and I found that on Nintendo.

The day nintendo fall will be the day that I stop playing videogames. I really have tried some of the third party games but I haven´t found the connection that I have with nintendo games, too much violence, too much blood and too much first person shooters; the same formula: great visuals, absolut boring. Maybe some ubisoft games and some wayfoward games and some indie games grab my atention but i could list tons of “next generation games” that i wouldn´t miss.
Nintendo wont be software because 2 things they have those Japanese gamers who love pokemon and fire emblem. another thing is they have killer first party games like Zelda and Metroid and donkey kong ect and im not gana say Mario because that’s what Nintendo makes money off of. but I feel like Nintendo needs to stop with all the secrecy because it forces gamers to have nothing to look forward to. It’s like if they keep saying this stuff enough times that it’ll become true. Vita is more powerful than the 3DS but we all know what happened there. This isn’t just about power, it’s about content. That’s why a 500 page book isn’t automatically better and more valuable than a 100 page one.

The 3DS is selling at a better rate than the DS did. The DS has sold over 150 million units and still counting. The 3DS sales did not pick up until the price dropped and the great games started to come out. The Wii U will have great games coming out this year.
Sony and Microsoft will continue to put out overpriced systems, sell them at a loss, and LOSE money.
Nintendo will continue to put out conservative systems and sell them for a profit.
Core gamers (the people who bought over 240 million consoles last gen) will never settle for a fucking iPad to play games on. NEVER

The reason why Sega failed and became a 3rd party publisher is for many reasons.
Sega Game Gear – 11 million

Sega CD – 6 million
Sega 32X – less than 1 million
Sega Saturn – 9.5 million
Sega Dreamcast – 10 million
All of those console sold VERY poorly. The only console Sega ever sold that crack the 20 million barrier was the Sega Genesis (40 million.) That was their most successful console. As big of a name that Sega was, the never really hit a home run with any of the hardware. The Genesis was the best shot and was probably when Sega was at it’s finest. Adding in the numbers of the Sega Genesis and Sega Master System you have approximately 92 million consoles sold to date from Sega.
However after the 16-Bit era came to an end Sega’s decline stared rapidly. Now let’s look at Nintendo’s console history.
Nintendo Color TV Game – 3 million (Winner of 1st Gen)
Nintendo Entertainment System – 61 million (Winner of 3rd gen)
Super Nintendo Entertainment System – 49 million (Winner of 4th Gen)
Nintendo 64 – 32 million

..okay. The final nail in the coffin of Sega in terms of making hardware had nothing to do with the horsepower of the Dreamcast, or the lack of DVD functionality. What killed the Dreamcast is one simple thing. Piracy. The Dreamcast was probably the easiest console in history to pirate. Hackers had a field day with it, and so did consumers. Why pay $50 dollars for NBA2k or Shenmue when I can download a boot disc and at worst pay $10 dollars from a ‘psst, over here’ guy? Or even just download the ROMs and use a disc-burning software to burn the games. Thousands of people started doing that and software sales tanked. Traditionally companies take major losses on hardware sales and make up the difference in software sales until the console starts to turn a profit. That is one reason why 3rd party support is so coveted. However if you console sells as a profit, you don’t need 3rd party support to make up the difference. That is one of the reasons why the Nintendo Wii was so successful and lucrative for Nintendo. Despite not having as much 3rd party support as Microsoft or Sony, the Wii made a profit of $40 from day one. So any revenue coming from 3rd parties was just icing on the cake for Nintendo.
Basically, the wrap the whole Sega issue up I’ll say this. There is NO COMPARISON between Sega and Nintendo. To even fix your mouth do do so SCREAMS either a lack of intelligence, purposeful bias, or laziness to look up the facts.
Now. As far as the Wii U being ‘underpowered’ or not ‘true next-gen.’ First of all, what does ‘underpowered’ mean? Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines it as
Un-der-pow-ered
1- driven by an engine of insufficient power
2 – having or supplied with insufficient power
Okay. So let’s go with that definition. Does the Wii U lack sufficient power? Well lets see. Several demos were shown last year to show off what was supposed to be “next-gen” graphics. Games such as Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs, etc. We were also led to believe that the Star Wars 1313 game was made using the Unreal Engine 4(an engine the Wii U ‘supposedly’ can’t run.) It was later revealed that not only were thee games slated to be on the PS3 and 360, not only were a couple confirmed to be footage from PC builds rather than console builds, but the Star Wars 1313 demo was running on Unreal Engine 3. Not 4, 3.
Now, I’ll take you back to E3 2011. Nintendo unveils the Wii U for the first time. The show off two demos that give a glimpse of what the Wii U can do graphically. The first we see is what has come to be known as the Japanese Garden Demo. An absolutely gorgeous scene with breathtaking visuals all real-time and PLAYABLE to the people at the show. Then we saw the Zelda HD demo which was done in the Twilight Princess art-style. Again, gorgeous graphics far beyond anything the Wii ever had and right there with anything that has been deemed “next-gen graphics.” These demos were confirmed to be for powerful that they could not run on the PS3 and 360. Keep in mind that this footage was done in only 3 weeks time and with alpha kits. The final dev kits that developers have now are substantially more powerful.
VP of Epic Games Mark Rein has stated that he was impressed with the demos and that they could do even more with them using Unreal Engine 3 yet. That is an interesting comment considering that the Star Wars 1313 demo that everyone claimed as “next-gen graphics” was also done using UE3. He also stated that while no game is in development for the Wii U that uses UE4, the Wii U can use UE4.
The CEO of CryTek has come out to say that not only does the Wii U run CryEngine 3, not only does it run it “beautifully,” but there is a game in development from a well-known developer using CryEngine 3.
Just recent Criterion Games let it be known in a recent interview that Need For Speed: Most Wanted for the Wii U will be using the same assets as the PC version because of the power and memory the system has. This is important for a number of reasons. For one, it shows that there is NO EXCUSE for the lackluster multiplat ports from various developers that are currently on store shelves for the Wii U. They have the same dev kits Criterion Games have.
Yes, getting used to a console in which the GPU does the bulk of the workload rather than the CPU which is the way the 360 and PS3 are constructed can be a challenge. Yes, finding out how to unleash the power of the Wii U with all the embedded RAM in the GPU is also a challenge. However, Criterion Games has proven that the problem is not a lack of horsepower in the console, but rather a lack of horsepower in the motivation of the programmers. Let’s be honest. We are lazy. People would rather just copy-and-paste a game (*cough Call of Duty *cough-cough*) rather than build something from scratch. It takes a lot of time, and a lot of hard work. I understand that. All I say to that is be honest and say THAT rather than making excuses for laziness by saying that the console is ‘underpowered’ or not true “next-gen.”
The Wii U runs a custom 1.2 GHz Tri-core PowerPC 750 CPU built to function like a Power7. It does not do all the things a Power7 can do, but it does some of them and behaves in the same way. The Wii U has 2GB of RAM, and the GPU is a custom ATI Radeon E6760. This set up annihilates the spec of the 360 and PS3. How anyone could suggest that hardware 8-9 years old could be more powerful than this should simply close their mouths and never open them again. If the Wii U underpowered? No. It is less powerful than the PS4? You betcha. Will it also be less powerful than the XBOX 720? I wouldn’t doubt it. Will it matter? Probably not. Here is why.

The last 40 years have proven that there is no financial advantage to gorge a console with raw horsepower. What wins a console war is when a company is successful in convincing casual gamers and non-gamers alike a reason for having your console in the house. That’s it. It really is that simple. The ‘core’ gamers are going to buy a system regardless, but that is a very small percentage despite what the general consensus thinks. The average person has neither the money, nor the interest to rush out and buy the latest console just because it’s there.
So to wrap this whole thing up I’ll finish with a few more numbers. The Wii U sold 3 million consoles worldwide in 45 days. It sold more in it’s first month than the PS2, PS3, 360, and Wii did. It sold more in it’s first December than the PS2, PS3, 360, and Wii did. As a matter of fact, it sold more December worldwide than the PS3 and 360 did COMBINED their first December. 3.08 million Wii U’s in 45 where it took the PS2, PS2, 360, and Wii 5 MONTHS to reach that status. All this with a shaky launch library of poorly-ported retread multiplats, a TERRIBLE marketing campaign by Nintendo, and two solid months with no 1st party material.
Yes, Nintendo had a terrible January. There is no reason to buy a Wii U right now if you haven’t already. However, if the Wii U can sell as much as it has under the aforementioned circumstances, what do you think is gonna happen when games like Super Mario Galaxy 3, Mario Kart 8, Yoshi’s Yarn, Wii Fit U, Wii Sports U, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, Xenosaga, Windwaker HD, Smash Bros, Retro Studios game, and Miyamoto’s new IP hits store shelves? And that is just what we KNOW is coming. Undoubtedly, Nintendo has a lot more surprises to show at E3.
The bottom line is, Nintendo is fine. They had 10 billion dollars CASH in the bank. They cannot sell another things and LOSE 250 million dollars a year and not go bankrupt until 2052. With their assets worth they could ride even until 2075 before complete collapse. So what they lost money. What company isn’t nowadays? Sony is selling off assets left and right to pay off debt. They are hemorrhaging money from ALL their divisions. They just unveiled a console that is going to lose TONS of money per-sale because of the hardware. Yet, people seem to think Sony is fine and Nintendo is going 3rd party. Ridiculous. Nintendo is going no place. They’ve been here for 40 year ad Lord willing they’ll be here 40 more. The Wii U may or may not win the next-gen, but it won’t be the loser.”

Actually, D2K, you took the words right out my mouth (and made them a bit more eloquently, I might add). This is one thing these ‘analysts’ keep grossly overlooking. IMO, I suspect the other reason stems from the fact, people have forgotten one adage: “unless the system has also a strong software support, the hardware essentially doesn’t mean a thing.”
As you indicated, the reason the lower-powered consoles have ultimately performed better in sales is the fact they genuinely had great software support, not just from Third Parties, but the First Parties as well. For instance, Dreamcast was doomed not just due to piracy, but the sheer fact Sega didn’t really support the system as the Third Party companies did. Consider this, when you think of Dreamcast games, many usually recall the Third Parties ones. However, other than Sonic, and a few sports games, Sega didn’t really develop anything killer for the Dreamcast.
Better yet, here’s a mind-blowing concept to wrap your heads around: the ColecoVision. If many recall, it was far powerful than the Atari 2600 and Intellivision combined (think an ancient version of 360). Its marketing strategy was stating it could bring arcade games home but with better graphics. So why did it fail? As you aforementioned, though the software was great, the hardware itself left something to be desired. Many disliked the keypad controllers (same problem with Intellivision), and just wanted something simple for playing games. Another factor was price, the Coleco was much more expensive than the Atari, and had less software titles under its belt.
Currently as you also stated, D2K, one of the problems with the competition and naysayers is this: the fallacy that hi-technology is better. Whereas what they don’t know is, unless you have strong software and developer support, all you have is an overpriced, severely-limited machine.
Overall, I agree with you on all accounts, simply because true history has demonstrated the underdog will always survive because they focus on their audience rather than just profits alone.

Let me point out that “powerful consoles” don’t always fail with the SNES. That alone debunks that notion.
Also, the Dreamcast was weaker than the PS2 (not by much) and it still failed.
The saying is full of AIDs and does not work when these two right here are facts.
The NEO GEO was more powerful than the SNES. People seem to forget about that console (usually purposefully to try and break up the fact of most powerful consoles never winning a war.) The SNES had a better sound card (made by Sony actually) and double the main RAM that the NEO GEO had, but the CPU of the NEO GEO destroyed the CPU of the SNES. It was not even close.

They have been in the centre of gaming for 30 years, outlived sega, atari, commodore etc, stepped out of the graphics battle of Sony and Microsoft, founded a whole new moneystream in casual gaming, are owning the handheld market, they are healthy, despite ups and downs and not having to or be able to rely on other departments which sony and microsoft need to do and have tons of IP’s that sell consoles for them. What happend with the other consoles in the early stages? If there aren’t enough (good) titles, they don’t sell. I all i have to say i agree with what you said it is obvious that the PS4 is more powerful than Wii U , but the gap everybody thinks the PS4 will have, will be a lot smaller than what they are expecting. Long live Nintendo, Micro$oft, and $ony,
The gap is going to be very significant. Almost identical to that of PS3 to Wii. The RAM alone is more than 16 times as powerful, and it’s almost 10 times as powerful and fast compared to Wii U’s anemic RAM. And that means more than just prettier graphics, too, which Nontendo fans don’t seem to understand.
What is hilarious is how many Nintendo fanboys were going on and on about how powerful the Wii U will be before it came out, and even afterward were putting up videos on YouTube comparing it to the 360 and PS3, showing off how the ports on Wii U looked marginally better… but then PS4 is announced, and they show off PRE-ALPHA games and they already look better than anything on the Wii U currently or that will be released this year, and now SUDDENLY, power no longer matters!

One thing is clear however: the gap of power between the Wii and Wii U is obviously much larger than the gap between the PS3 and PS4.
In other words, 1080 is kinda of a big deal for Nintendo, or at least a step that was necessary.
On the other hand, the PS4 leaves me cold because, at this point, just improving the hardware feels a tad superficial; there doesn’t seem to be much to the console aside from the increase in power.

MS won’t abandon the traditional controller, Sony is making worthwhile innovations like playing games as they download and making their hardware more easy to port and program for compared to PCs (which devs make their games on/for), and Nintendo is doing…? Oh that’s right, they’re doing what MS and Sony were doing nearly 10 years ago, only they’re doing it with (oh wow) a second a screen! Ooo! Ahhh! Wow. Nothing like decade old hardware with a fancy screen for menus and for holding up to “scan the area with” like you annoyingly have to do in ZombiU! Oh and MiiVerse? That’s revolutionary? Say whatever you want, but at least Nintendo is trying to offer gamers a new way to play their games, which gives third party company a reason to make exclusives for it. Sure the Gamepad might seem a tad gimmicky but at least there’s some effort.
Sony doesn’t really bring anything new to the table; I’m fine with my PS3 as it is and they haven’t really given me a reason to buy another one with a (proportionally) slight increase in power.
Also, what matters to a console is its games, Nintendo will keep making Mario and Zelda because that’s what their fans enjoy, there’s a reason why their series have been around for decades: because they can do different things with them. First party titles IS what they excel at after all; that’s irrefutable.

What I meant by that was: aside from graphics and power, the PS4 doesn’t have anything groundbreaking. Not all gamers are shallow enough to buy their consoles based on how powerful the hardware.

Funny you accuse everyone here to be fanboys who ”blindly follow Nintendo”, but meanwhile you seem to completely blind yourself from members who post legitimate comments and remain down to earth; from the looks of it, you only pay attention to those who take offense to everything.

It’s kind of funny, because people writing articles about Sega and Nintendo today really don’t know their history, their FULL history. Sega started out as a 3rd party company making games for Atari, Coleco, and Mattel before becoming first party in 1983 with the SG-1000, which would eventually lead to the Master System in America in 1986. I have had people argue that so too was Nintendo. That’s not true. Nintendo actually started out as a first party company in 1977 making the Color TV Game 6 a full 6 years before the Family Computer’s debut in 1983, and we know the Famicom later became the NES in 1985. Point is, Nintendo wouldn’t be the next Sega, they’d be the Next Atari- a company who started out as a first party company in 1977, then became a 3rd party independent today. Granted Atari just exists in name only, it was decimated in the 90’s, but still, both Nintendo and Atari started out as hardware makers who introduced their systems in the late-70’s. THAT is why the Famicom was such a success in the early-80’s, Nintendo already had a success in their Color TV Game 6 when the Famicom debuted. It wasn’t luck, it was their having been in the hardware business for 6 years!! Geez, people, PLEASE do some history and fact finding BEFORE you write articles. Thanks you.

Actually, Nintendo started out as a card game company back in 1889. If you’re going to lecture people on history, it helps to be right about it yourself.
What these “Reporters” forget is that the ps4 well cost a lot to take advantage of that hardware, the Wii U well cost far less in the long run. 2) the tablet like controller well allow lots of iPad/windows 8/ android games over. This well be grate for indo developers and for studios looking to port (which is grate for digital sales) 3) Nintendo well always sell systems with Zelda, Mario, Mario cart, dinky king, Kirby, smash brothers, Metroid, and they continue to make new ip’s all the time. They have locked Dow. Grate partner deals as well like with bayoneta. Nintendo is so big in the development world they can afford these kind of partnerships and continue to make more money in the long run.
The reason for slow sales is they opened with 2D Mario, and no other big ip’s once a new 3D Mario comes, wind weaker reborn, Mario cart, new Zelda (in HD) and other ip’s fallow they well start to sell more. Only BIG fans got one now, or those that saw a age they wanted to get, but most are waiting to hear when their favorites are coming out. Pokémon and Zelda well always sell a lot and a HD Pokémon and a HD Zelda is something we have bin wanting. Also revs just need time to see what to do with the controller, combined with the pro, and Wii remote controls as well. They well be doing just fin this round BUT they well need to be berry creative for the 9th gen

It’s funny because I believe, looking at GameGear and Dreamcast for example, that SEGA went down because it made very powerful but also very expensive, ahead-of-their-time consoles. They tried to hard to reach a future that wasn’t gonna be there for a while. The Dreamcast was quite similar to an XBox, but way too early and too expensive.
So what I leard from SEGA’s doom is there’s risk when you try to reach unreasonable power/graphic performances on expensive systems with ugly controllers. So maybe Sony should slow down a little, right?

This has got to be the biggest, laughable article i have ever read on the internet. Just like pacther, no valid evidence to back up their statements. Nintendo got this in the bag, i bet their laughing their asses off on the corporate desk when they read these types of articles. In regard to ps4, since ps3 sony has made a image of being powerful than any other console in a generation. Now with PS4, it appears that their lingering more to western developers with those specs being near pc level, where the west still has alot of pc gaming, thus making MOST eastern devs feel alienated. I just wish sony would go back to how they was with ps1/ps2 days, focus on games than power. Espicially since asshole Jack Tretton has been the ceo of the playstation division, its been going downhill. for example, monster hunter has left sony because of poor treatment and now flocked to Nintendo who has open arms. Wouldnt surprise me if kingdom hearts 3 ends up a multiplat release for ps4 and wiiu. To those cocky sony fanboys who think ps4 is gonna be 10 times more powerful than wiiu and nextbox is in for a rude awakening. While the number are different, the architecture is also different and those who developed for wii u has said its easy to make and port games for it, meaning that all 3 are gonna be close in terms of graphical quality except it may be some extra squeeze in draw distance here and there. Its sad how gaming in the west, the developers and the media has gotten. Which is why i say its a joke compared to the east. Over here it has to be some lonely depressed emo dude with over the top muscles in a dark setting with oceans of blood to sell and claim “Hollywood status.” Hince why i predict that WiiU for the most part will be a console for 3rd party japanese games. And if the console gets some major west titles like gta5, the only west series i really care for,, it may as well be my only console this generation(8th).

Why do people always want to point out Nintendo for bullshit like this? Nintendo aren’t the onlyl one who keeps releasing the same thing (which they are not due to them being innovative unlike the other competitors). We have a new Assassin’s Creed game coming RIGHT AFTER AC3 came out! I mean, really? There’s too many damned Call of Duty, Halo, God of War, Tom Clancy Ghost Recon, Street Fighter, etc. games being announced and released for the 360 and PS3. Do people talk about that? Noo… Sony’s in a hole right now. If the PS4 don’t sell like they want it to (because of Sony having repeated fail projects [A.K.A. Playstation Move & Playstation Vita], the economy being how it is and people not having the money for $300+ consoles, people still see value in their last gen consoles, and the PS4 price will literally be AT LEAST $400 [I predict $500 by the expenses and hardware put into it that was confirmed]) Sony WILL be the one to drop out of this console race. They NEVER, EVER talk about that. Fuck developers.

2) There have been only 3 Gears of War games in over 7 years. There have been only 6 Halo games in over 12 years. That’s one of each every 2 years. Now how many Mario games have there been in the last 12 years? How many Mario Party games alone? Thank you, sit down…
3) Sony is actually giving developers what they all have asked for: x86 architecture for easier programming and porting of titles, more breathing room power-wise, more development tools and structure, etc. They’re also giving FANS what THEY asked for. So no, they’re not going to drop out. They did what Nintendo should have: listened.
I made this connection with the Dreamcast a while back. How the Dreamcast was a new system, with a screen on it’s controller, that was beaten out by it’s generation the next year onward. I honestly can’t say that I’m not worried about Nintendo because it’s creepily similar. Although Nintendo has more money than God and they have multiple different first party games that are holding them up as well. All Sega had was the Dreamcast, Sonic, Shining Force, and maybe 1 or 2 other first party games.
Nintendo is not going anywhere They have enough money to keep them going. Also sega had a lot going bad they had several consoles that did not sell well at all,and sank a lot of money in to the dream cast.
