Miyamoto: Luigi’s Mansion Wasn’t Inspired By Ghostbusters

luigis_mansion_dark_moon_ghostLuigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon features a multiplayer mode, ScareScraper, in which up to four players can team up to hunt down ghosts in a haunted building. In an interview, ABC told the Nintendo 3DS game’s producer, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, that ScareScraper has a Ghostbusters vibe. Miyamoto responded by saying that, while he is a fan of the film, it wasn’t an inspiration for the original Luigi’s Mansion on Nintendo GameCube.

ABC: “Dark Moon” multiplayer features four Luigis tracking down ghosts with vacuum-cleaner backpacks. It has a “Ghostbusters” vibe. Are you a fan of the movie?

Miyamoto: I am a fan of “Ghostbusters.” That wasn’t the inspiration for the original “Luigi’s Mansion.” In fact, when we were developing the original “Luigi’s Mansion,” we were taking care as a team, even though that wasn’t our original inspiration, to make sure that people didn’t just assume that that was what we were trying to do.

I think the translation is totally off. It happened in the past already with that stuff he asid about retiring and it was translated wrong. I mean doesn’t it make more sense like this:

Honestly I’m surprised luigi didn’t have
    1. More games based on this since the GameCube version
    2. His moves in super smash broa brawl still resemble Mario. When some of his moves could’ve been based around the vaccum

    1. Yeah, I wish Luigi had his own set of unique moves, but I think fans of the character in the SSB series might get upset if Nintendo changes his moves.

      1. Not me. I would love to see him be differentiated from the rest of the pack by using Poltergust attacks and what not. I don’t really like when they make clone fighting styles of characters in Smash Bros. but to each his own.

          1. F.L.U.D.D. would be okay if it actually did damage. I think on a whole, Mario was way underpowered in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Hopefully they will fix that problem in the next game.

      2. Sakurai already said that one of the main things they were going to do with the next Smash Bros was make it so that there weren’t multiple characters with basically the same moveset.

      3. I KNOW: Luigi’s new special move: whipping out the ol’ Poltergust 5000 and vaccuming all of ’em up, their health depleting until it reached a certain HP, then spit ’em out. Luigi’s main weapoon: Poltergust 5000

    1. Yeah I can see where you are coming from. I mean sucking ghosts up with a vacuum like device and even the look and personality of the ghosts are very reminiscent of Ghostbusters. I mean Donkey Kong is obviously based on King Kong but I believe Miyamoto still denied it so him denying Ghostbusters influence doesn’t really mean anything. I’m sure Ghostbusters was still an influence on the making of the game and they added their own personal flare to it to where you completely forget about Ghostbusters.

      1. But you don’t suck up Ghosts with a vacuum in Ghost Busters, you trap them and, making sure not to cross your beam with another, set a ghost capture device under them that sucks them in. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OFC.

      2. ” I’m sure Ghostbusters was still an influence on the making of the game and they added their own personal flare to it to where you completely forget about Ghostbusters.”

Only if the player was born in 1995 and beyond and just never heard of the franchise or even Extreme Ghostbusters at the minimum.

Miyamoto just made the Poltergust a 2-in-1 device instead of Luigi running around with two different ones and having go through the bother of grabbing one and tossing it under the ghost. He’s still have a backpack device and he’s still capturing ghosts.

That said, I still have to get around to playing it. I have Fire Emblem I haven’t finished and Etrian Odyssey IV has been leeching my time…not that I mind that at all.

    2. The thing is, why would he lie? I don’t think he gains anything from lying, so there’s no point in doing so.

      1. I don’t think he was necessarily lying just really downplaying the real amount of influence Ghostbusters may have had on Luigi’s Mansion. He would have good reason to too. There was a ridiculous lawsuit of the arcade game Donkey Kong and even though Nintendo won, it still faced bad publicity since any filing of a lawsuit if bound to make bad press. He probably downplayed the influence of Ghostbusters so the owners of of the movie wouldn’t think they had a case against Nintendo. It’s all about protecting publicity which is a good thing.

  2. taku bink bonk weeaboo

  3. Luigi’s Mansion is SOOOOO much better than Ghostbusters could ever dream of being. I totally HATE the Ghostbusters movies. I can’t understand how anyone can like them? I always felt that Luigi’s Mansion is what Ghostbusters SHOULD have been.

    1. Conceited asshole much?Attacking another series just because you personally don’t enjoy it? Very immature and pathetic.

          1. No problem! And btw, I’M the one who rejected society. Not the other way around. I’ve never had any use for others.

            1. nah, don’t worry about him.Just one of the many people who thinks they got got common sense and can rub it to anyone and except no result to come out of it.

      1. LOL,WAT?He was stating an opinion, this is coming from a guy who hates it when one disagree WITH your opinion but in a way more disrespectful fashion. But what did i except from a person who thinks banning pervs is gonna solve anything.

      1. I just don’t like those movies. Every time I hear them mentioned with any kind of love or fondness, I feel confused. I thought they SUCKED when I watched them.

      1. No. I like spreading the hate. It gives me something to do.
Besides, it’s not my fault that so many people can’t take my harsh criticism.

      1. trust me, I will say something more stupid soon. You will regret the day you gave out the Dumbest Comment of the Day award too early!

      1. No, it’s not personal opinion, it’s a stupid opinion. Other than Ghosts, and the fact you have to trap ghosts, the 2 things have nothing in common.

One is set in New York, has light hearted to adult humour, a team of 4 guys, dialouge segments, a story, the majority of the movie isnt actually them “busting ghosts”.

The other is a video game, set in a haunted mansion, about an italian plumber looking for his brother, sucking ghosts into a vacuum, and solving puzzles, with light hearted, quirky and visual humour, and next to no dialogue.

The similarities….aren’t even there, they are nothing alike.
What’s he’s basically saying is Ghostbusters shouldve been just Dan Aykroyd, no-one else, not talking, looking for i duno, Rick Moranis in a haunted mansion where he meets some old guy.

It’s a stupid comment, shut the fuck up.

      2. Sure, if he doesn’t like Ghostbusters, that’s fine, my friend doesn’t like it, i don’t care, i like it, i own them on bluray, but what he said was just fucking retarded, and Nintendrone bullshit AGAIN.

    2. You trolls are just one big happy family aren’t you? And if you call ME a troll, I suppose I’ve learned from the best.

    3. Ghostbusters films are some of the best films ever man :) Luigi’s mansion 2 also looks like one of the funnest 3DS games!

  4. He may not of been trying to ‘copy’ Ghostbusters but it certainly influenced Luigi’s Mansion whether he is aware of it or not.

As artists we are always influence by things we see in our creations. Sometimes things we see manifest themselves into what we create without us even realizing that. Or, Miyamoto is just saying that to keep from being needlessly sued by Sony. :)

  5. IDK, the Poltergust looks more like a Proton Pack this time around with all the lights. Plus notice when Luigi is capturing those ghost, the stream emits electricity just like the capture stream of a proton pack.

  6. Back then I didn’t know that it wasn’t possible to jump. I always tried it until I got one of the many gems where it shows that jumping animation. Then I thought I need to collect a lot of them. :)

  8. i’ve shown the game trailer to a few different people and they have ALL said “that’s just like ghostbusters!” so i can see why they would ask him the question. he’s only lying because he doesn’t want the world to think that the game is unoriginal, even if the model was ghostbusters.

    1. Exactly. It does exactly the same thing ghostbusters does, which is fine, but he’s just trying to avoid claiming it. What did they expect him to say?

  9. He might not have meant it to be, but it is. In both you are sucking ghosts into a contraption, taking it back to a vault and storing them. It’s identical. I’m not faulting them for it, but give credit where credit is due.

  10. I really hope this translate is wrong because:
    1: It clearly looks inspired.
2: He said he was a fan of the movie.
3: It would be impossible for a guy to come up with an idea like this WITHOUT seeing the movie, it’s possible but would be very rare probably. Especially if that guy was a fan of the movie. What the heck.
4: He acts as being inspired by a movie is “bad” and “unoriginal”, when really, there is no such thing as pure originality. But I say it’s still an “original” move like first being inspired and then having new ideas to it. Which is what this looks like.

Plus, the result is still like inspire, so if it was inspired by the movie, it’s no longer original? That doesn’t make sense, since it wouldn’t matter which.
