GDC: Epic Says Unreal Engine 4 Won’t Be Coming To Wii U

wii-u-blue

Epic co-founder Mark Rein has told journalists at this years Games Developers Conference that the Wii U won’t be getting Unreal Engine 4 games. Rein said that Unreal Engine 3 is supported on Wii U, but Unreal Engine 4 will only be running on next generation consoles. He also confirmed that Unreal Engine 3 will still be supported while Unreal Engine 4 is out.

“Will UE4 run on the Wii U?”

“Hahaha no.” Rein said, with expert comedic timing. The room erupted with laughter. As the laughs died down, Rein continued: “I mean, sorry, it’s not really a correct answer. We’re not… we have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right? And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3. We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 license. Unreal Engine 3 doesn’t disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That’s really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it’s powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.

“Nothing controversial, guys,” he jokingly chided.

Thanks, Aeolus

      1. Wii U isn’t next-gen. It’s current gen, its going to be the same situation with the Wii, it’s going to have the power of a Gamecube. Except, with Wii U, its going to be at the power of the 360/PS3

        1. IT IS NEXT GEN DUMB ASS LOOK AT WIKIPEDIA IT IS UNDER 8TH GEN WHICH IS NEXT GEN AND IT HAVE MORE POWER THE AN PS3 AND XBOX 360 WHICH AS BEEN CONFIRMED!!!!!!!
          !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          1. Yeah, that’s the reason I wrote this article: http://gamerxchange.net/2013/03/28/is-the-wii-u-next-gen-or-not/

Is the Wii U Next Gen or Not?

It is (was) Nintendo’s Next Gen system. It is a significant upgrade from the Wii. It might not be on par with Sony and Microsoft’s next gen when it comes to power, but in sequence, it is the next (now current) generation of Nintendo’s consoles.

With that said, it will be chronologically categorized as an 8th gen machine.

But even though it really shouldn’t matter, the debate will continue.

            1. it is nxtgen but when people say is not is because is the same history again is the week one like wii/360/ps3 gen. wich mean it will have lees 3rd parties support when it come to AAA games that this developers want to sell base on graphics….am a nintendo fan since 1985 the wii was a console that i enjoy but let me down interms of 3rd parties support and i finish for the 1st time since 1985 with a secon console (am a pc gamer also) wich was the 360 for 2 years but the red ring of death make me change to ps3 and i enjoy my ps3 more than my wii. when nintendo show the wii u and the bird demo i when i preorder de wii u without a doubt and i love the wii u 20 time more that what i love my wii and i was thinking that this gen i will have only my wii u and my pc for gaming but after all this news og lack of 3rd parties and now noooo ue4 i will buy the ps4 or upgrade my pc for those games i know will not realese in wii u, i think the game pad is a brilliant idea and that the wii u will have amazing games from Nintendo and other companies that do not care about graphics and am a happy owner of one but it look like it will be again the same history Nintendo left behind becuse lack of power in the console, people dont understand that the wii u is way beatter that this next consoles not because the power but because offer new ways to play , good graphics and in a good price, the ps4 will be too high in price and the nxt xbox will be around $400 and will be just and upgrade version of the 360. anyway when it come to graphics you will never make people happy because they always want more. i like more gameplay than graphics and am not saying the wii u will not sell well or that i dont like graphics i think that there need to be a balance beteween graphics and gamplay and that is the wii u.

        2. Cmon , bro stfu. And the Tablet controller with 1/60th of a second latency is just none existent ? Oh that’s right! it’s a whole new concept to gaming one that is arguably as big a leap as a graphical one.

          The Wii PS3 360 are 7th gen consoles . The Wiiu , PS4 , 720 are 8th gen consoles.
Yes the PS4 and 720 might be much more powerfull , but the Wiiu does have an awesome , expensive controller that opens up a lot of avenues.

Basically the PS3 and 360 came out 7 years ago and the WIiu came out 4 months ago and allows you to play games on your controller whilst other people are watching the tv amongst many other things. And it has the worlds greatest developer of all time producing games exclusively for it – Nintendo .

Again. Just think about PS vita VS 3DS . Graphics aren’t everything. In that case they don’t matter one bit.

          1. But you’re one of the few who said UE4 would appear on the Wii U because it was supposedly powerful, like the power mattered.

          2. Nintendo really makes a good job in Brainwash y’all the Nintybabies with theirs shittygames hahahahahahaha LOL

        3. The thing is there isn’t a technological bar one needs to reach in order to qualify for a gen. It’s entirely based on timing. Last gen was Wii/360/PS# cause they all released around the same couple years. WiiU/PS4/720whatever are next gen due to being released within the same amount of time.

Hell, the fact that people are still ignorant over what the WiiU is capable of astonishes me. You’re talking about something no PS3 or 360 can do. That’s play games at true(as in not horribly distorted) 1080p at a full 60fps. And of course, as people get used to the hardware the games will look nicer.

          1. “That’s play games at true(as in not horribly distorted) 1080p at a full 60fps.”

List of 3D games doing this are…?

        4. That guy from Sony put it the best. Wii U isn’t next gen, nor is it current gen. As soon as Nintendo went with Wii instead of trying to race with Microsoft and Sony, they locked themselves into a limbo generation. I’m not saying the Wii U is bad, I’m simply stating that Nintendo is in a completely different dimension, one that is often accused to being gimmickry.

Nintendo is going to do whatever it wants to do. Obviously, the 3DS isn’t as slick as the Vita might be, but the 3DS has one of the greatest gaming libraries ever, and that’s what makes it a great system.

            1. I clicked expecting some random guy on a webcam rambling about the industry or consones and did not immediately close the tab and leave disappointed.

        5. Auctually a little while ago I forget how long someone from Sony said this gen will mostly be in par
And wiiu has shown way better graphics then ps4

          1. Lol its all scalable crap. They only got 4 gigs of ram to use but once they start shuffling which parts of the console sifts through code and start optimizing things shit is gonna get convoluted

        6. His build off 2010-2011 tech.
Wii U launch games and launch window games produces graphics powers of pS3 360 games late 2010-2012.

For launch that amazing to do what PS3 and 360 can late in their life cycle.
Later down the line Wii U graphic will be as great as PC now or better.

Watch the moment Super Mario Wii U, Mario Kart Wii U , Xenoblade 2 Beta Footage, Metroid Prime 4 and Super Smash Bros. Wii U is shown all you so called Wii U is current gen is gonna feel like shit,

        7. Of course its current gen, PS3 and Xbox 360 are last gen.

PS4, when it release will be a current gen system, same with the Xbox 720. Just saying

      2. idd very lame of the developers ! They could do so much with the Wii U ! That you can’t with other consoles ! Greetings

      3. wasn’t there an article a while back that stated something about Retro Studios showing off their engine that they are making to the guys at Epic and they were impressed. that’s great for nintendo but bad for 3rd party support, oh well. UE4 is overrated in my opinion, well at this point in time anyway.

      1. Criterion.Platinum Games. Atlus. Ea doesnt develop shit. Oh wait thats exactly what they develop. The japanese arent too amped about the PS4

        1. Playstation is no longer a console for Japanese games it seems, VERY FEW are coming compared to WiiU. It’s a western console like the nextbox, sad really I miss the old Sony AKA PS1/PS2

    1. “‘Hahaha no.’ Reign said, with expert comedic timing. The room erupted with laughter.”

It’s offical. Nintendo’s console is ONCE AGAIN the laughing stock of the gaming industry.

          1. That’s because they really didn’t laugh at the Wii and 3DS; everyone actually loved their appeal initially, and believed, at least with the Wii, that there would be some good innovation appearing from them. But we’re at the Wii U now, after the Wii and 3DS, and it’s not like we haven’t learned from what came of the Wii and 3DS. They shouldn’t have laughed, but at the same time, it wasn’t inappropriate to do so.

    2. If the Wii-U isn’t next gen then Nintendo is all about power. They have had the most powerful consoles for every generation. The Wii is a powerhouse and the most powerful console of its generation (which is the 6th one seeing as, with that logic, it’s previous-previous gen). They even released two consoles during the 6th gen (gamecube and wii).

Seriously though people need to understand that generation has to do with time.

      1. Nintendo is a god. You can hate god all you want you cant kill a god. Plus Nintendo fans are the pillars that support Nintendo. As long as we exsist so shall Nintendo.

      2. We’ll never surrender…

Someday in the future, Nintendo will consume everything and Sony will fall…

Microsoft will be overrun by the Apple Union…

  1. American devs are going to Hell. Their all snooty and power hungry and brush off anything Nintendo does without even trying. At this point i don’t care if the game industry crashes, good riddance if it does

    1. if it does crash again it will ether be nintendo you will once again bring us out of the crash like they did with the nes or it will be a whole new company who brings us out of the crash

        1. True that. Thats why Nintendo is putting together a elite team of new players like unity engine, umbria (if thats the name) and many others even indie developers are onboard and i think this is the reason Nintendo is not marketing his home console.

    2. keep in mind the video game crash only happen in AMERICA while that going on japan and Europe are doing fine.

    1. They are just too deep in Sony and microsoft’s pockets for any progress to be made with the Nintendo brand! By the fucking way EPIC, the Wii U is next fucking gen!!! Damn I am sick of this years gdc! It should have been called the “bash nintendo and make it for IOS” conference!! These closed minded simpletons will be the downfall of the modern gaming era!

      1. Extra Juicy Lemonade

I agree they are closed minded, and the industry has become overly ‘political’. Saying that, Nintendo have hardly helped themselves much since the underwhelming reveal of the Wii U in 2011. I mean just the name itself was a disappointment that was clearly going to create confusion for some consumers. The rest should be obvious of how Nintendo have played a poor game. They have only E3 to save the Wii U. It’s likely we’ll see a new console announced or hinted at as early as 2015/2016

        1. Extra Juicy Lemonade

In terms of power, it’s simply a boosted PS3/360. It is to them, at most what Xbox/Wii was to Dreamcast. Before the PS4 announcement, I didn’t think it’d be much of a problem, but clearly developers have known about PS4 and Sony’s strong approach to win them for a long time now, and then hearing bits of muddled information and disorganisation with Wii U, they must’ve been left understandably underwhelmed. The Wii U could have gotten away with being as powerful as it was, IF Nintendo bothered to announce, market and promote it properly with a strong array of first party titles to entice people.

        2. do you have any idea how much damage it would cause nintendo if they moved from wii u and announced a new console this e3?. not only that, but the public would be outraged and shocked beyond reason. nintendo is going to have to deal with the mess they made. a more likely scenario would be that, instead, they decide to rebrand the wii u and re-release it with a whole new look, and a promotional campaign that actually has good commercials and shows games that are still in development.

          1. Nintendo started making plans for their next handheld and home console after the Wii U and 3DS. Expect the 3DS successor in like 3 years. Nintendo’s 9th gen system wont be till like 2018.

            1. Extra Juicy Lemonade

I seriously doubt that. The Wii got away with it because it was a new trend and had a massive differentiator. The Wii U had had a poor start, so if E3 doesn’t turn it around, yes I believe they will take the opportunity to show something of a new console by 2015/16 with a release not too long after. Nintendo cycles are usually 5 years. Wii was 6, so it’s quite feasible they could make the Wii U 4 years if it’s not so successful. It would be just in time to compete with PS4/Xbox3, with the same level of graphics/ capabilities or higher. That is, if Nintendo wanted to get their act together. Perhaps it will be a handheld/home hybrid tablety thing.

            2. Extra Juicy Lemonade

remember the WIi U was announced in 2011. 2016 is 5 years away, and 2015 is feasible if WIi U does poorly. 2015 is also feasible for a new handheld.

        3. Aren’t all companies now a days.

Crytek confirmed that Crysis 3 was running perfectly on the Wii U and to be honest… Cryengine still has the better graphics compared to the new Unreal Engine 4 which still looks like Unreal Engine 3 with some new paint on it

      2. Please do some research. The Wii U is only about as powerful as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. That’s a technological fact. The hardware simply cannot compete with what the next Xbox and PS4 will be offering.

Nintendo can call Wii U “next gen” as much as they like – that term means one thing and one thing only: “it is our next console”. It doesn’t mean “It’s super powerful and will run every game but developers are too lazy and/or being paid by Microsoft/Sony”. Don’t be ridiculous.

I’m a huge Nintendo fan. I love my Wii U for what it is. But it is not going to be able to compete with the next Xbox or the PS4. It simply can’t. The hardware is too different, and it simply won’t be able to produce the same graphical fidelity that the other consoles can. Which is why it won’t support UE4.

Fact: UE4 could easily run on Wii U. But the most important fact that you’re missing: It won’t look anything like the tech demo’s you’ve seen. It will simply look like UE3. Which is already running on Wii U.

        1. It -is- more powerful than PS360, but not significantly so to make a difference to the average gamer accustomed to those consoles.

Think Wii vs Xbox graphics…not a big difference.

            1. They did, but I never really felt that was a substantial leap or something outright impossible to do on said Xbox with a similar game. The 60 fps was welcome though, as opposed to Sunshine’s 30…

Funny, Sunshine’s beta was actually a 60 fps title to begin with…wonder what happened.

                1. I actually don’t understand why they didn’t do that instead of Galaxy 2.

Sunshine felt noticeably different outside of it’s platforming as a whole.

                  1. I guess fans didn’t like Sunshine as much as Ninty hoped for
FLUDD was an interesting concept and I think they pulled it off well
Only problem I had with Sunshine was the abundance of Red Coin missions

                    1. Yes, Red Coins and even some of the Blue Coins just turned the game into the chore, especially with them being hidden from plain sight in the strangest ways. Would be nice to see a remastering of it like Wind Waker that refined the mechanics and took care of those issues.

                      1. Yeah a remaster would be awesome
Wow am I the only person on this website having a normal conversation with you?

                      2. Ignoring the Blue coins as a whole, Sunshine was by far the greatest of the 3D Mario games in my eyes.

              1. Extra Juicy Lemonade

True. I believe some developers, including Nintendo will do the same with WIi U. So it will have some games that look better than the ones we’ve seen over the last 5 years, but most developers won’t bother to hack into it’s extra potential as it’s 10x easier to on PS4

                1. Is a shame, although it’s better if the graphics-centered developers are as far away as possible. Once again, I say Gameplay over Graphics.

          1. the technological fact is that wii u is a little it more powerful then ps3/xbox 360 examples of it being beter is batman arkam city it looks way better on wii u then ps3/xbox360 and so do all other cross platform games.

              1. No where do we use day 1 launch ports which were developed on early dev kits to judge a consoles power. Broken record – Xbox 360 games were only a tiny leap ahead of Xbox 1 games.
The Exclusives that come out on Wiiu will look amazing , regardless of what any other platform is doing.

            1. You cant use launch ports as an example. Wait till Zelda HD, wait till Retro Studios game. Hell Retro Studios game engine if its true will obliterate Unreal Engine 4 and the CryEngine. Not realistically but by making games look better.

              1. The problem is, you’re under the impression Retro is going to deliver another Metroid Prime, it could be something completely different and not meant to push the system’s abilities.

      3. He saying that Epic themselves won’t be directly supporting the Unreal Engine 4 for the Wii U which means if another developer wants to port it from them to make games for the Wii U with it then THEY can do so if they choose. And why is Unreal Engine 3 so bad anyway? Why cause it came out last gen? Do you know that the Xbox 360 & PS3 only used roughly 20% of the Unreal Engine 3? Since the Wii U is a more powerful console than those 2 it’ll probably use up to 75 to 80% of UE3. The Wii U will be able to use Unreal Engine 4 it’ll just be up to the other developers if they wanna port it to that platform

      4. True, it’s still scalable, if the developers wants, they can bring it to Wii U, even Rein said that, if i’m not wrong.

      1. dw, we’ll have our turn when the PS4 price is announced…but I doubt he’ll show his face here then, for a while at least…

          1. and that’s the big issue right now. Imo, the Wii U price is fair, but some of my friends can’t really afford a new system and its games…let alone for people who want a PS4. And before some idiots starts branding people as ‘poor’, he’d do well to know that expensive consoles in this economy WILL tank

            1. Extra Juicy Lemonade

Another problem with the Wii U – N64 controller, great, Gamecube controller, one of the best, Wiimote and nunchuk, great for some things, good quality. But the Wii U tablet… it just feels like a kids toy. It has little weight to it, feels very plasticy, doesn’t even have analog triggers, and the buttons feel a bit loose. Not a good first impression to someone who plays it. The controller also feels bulkier than i thought

              1. Analog triggers are crap. use the back triggers. They are cumbersome even on the best designed controller (xbox 360)

            2. Exactly. If the PS4 is the beast everyone claims it to be, especially with its specs and the fact that recently, Sony confirmed it will come with a high-quality headset (most likely bluetooth) then the price is going to be insane!

              1. Yeah, I’m a little concerned about the price myself. Everything looks great and promising, but with all of those specs and features – eh… I don’t expect it to be cheap at all. :/

                1. Bundles. This is always the key. See: Vita, Wii U, PS3, 360 and so forth.

I expect at least 2 PS4 SKUs; one with what you “need” for cheaper; and a higher end model at a higher price.

I’d imagine they’d want that camera bundled in at least one package to have it take off to an extent; shouldn’t be too expensive since it’s not exactly the most impressive camera specs on paper (like Kinect). HDD size can possibly vary too, although they seem to imply a bundled headset is standard. Sony will want to push PS+, so that’s also an option for a more pricier bundle.

Regardless, I expect a ~400-500 dollar price range. The Vita’s launch price was pleasantly surprising given the specs.

    2. And before he said others could if they wanted. Wii u is more powerful than the mobile platforms its on

so this is him being a bias moron

    3. Let’s see how hard some of these guys laugh when the development costs continue to spiral, or a different engine is chosen by most devs, as has been having with pretty much every change in gen

        1. Yeah, pretty much. It looks like Unity is the big engine this time around, because of the ease of programming. Also the community and the reps at the company have been pretty great.

As far as the other engines not coming it seems more like financial choice, then anything having to do with capabilities of a system. Also, I keep hearing these crazy rumors about blocking used games, which neither of the other guys have debunked yet. So that also might be waying into the decision too.

      1. Exactly! They don’t understand that. TODAY they’re are wining just because of development cost. Do you imagine how it will be with UE4 on PS4 and NextBox? Hahaha. I’m gonna Laugh too, Stupid Mark Rein; you’ll see how Nintendo WiiU it’s gonna be more profitable than the other “next-Gen” consoles. Just wait and see ;)

        1. Not to mention the development times itself. People better start preparing for very long breaks between games, or rushed games. Probably the latter in most cases…

          1. "Big N" is "small n"

Having a powerful system doesn’t mean that the games are automatically more expensive. If so then nobody would be able to afford games today because the N64 games I bought back in the day were always 50-60€ and if game prices wouldn’t get cheaper as dev skills and engines advance they would be priced at 200€+

            1. Did you even read what I posted? Assuming quality doesn’t suffer…you think that the time taken to develop games will be the same between generations? I never said that the price at which you buy games may increase (which may or may not happen). I was referring to the costs that the developer has to incur, and a longer development time obviously = higher costs, meaning huge risks where your game would need to sell insane numbers to profit.
We already have cases of games selling over 3 million and not recording a profit, during the current generation…

            2. Well considering they are saying development costs are rising when the shit is actually easier to develop for means prices are gonna stay the same except your getting nickel and dimed while they sell you an imcomplete product. Tomb Raider sells 3.4 mil copies first week?? FAILUUURRRREEE

            3. Dude what are you talking about? It’s been said that Killzone: Shadow Fall will have about a 80 to 100 million budget and considering that the Unreal Engine 4 will be a powerful brand new engine it may cost even more than that to develop for it which is why some developers may choose to wait a few more years to use it, at least until the price to develop for it comes down. Sony is taking a major risk beefing their hardware to the levels that they currently have the PS4 at. Only time will tell if their gamble for more power will pay off

      2. AND watch as there game don’t sell well and they need to make like lets just say 2-5 million copies to make a decent profit and this is just launch.

      1. “Next gen” doesn’t mean what you think it means. It’s simply a term that means “the next console”. It doesn’t mean super amazing hardware that will run all the highest quality games from all developers. It doesn’t mean anything other than the next console by a manufacturer.

I love my Wii U, but anybody who believed it would run UE4 must be pretty stupid. It’s a well-documented fact that the Wii U is only comparable to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. And neither of those consoles can run UE4 either. They’re simply not powerful enough.

      2. It is. BUT the Wiiu has once again walked down a different road to it’s competitors.

Xbox 720 and PS4 are ”traditional” next gen console whilst Wiiu is trying to seperate its self from them. I like that though! Having three similar consoles would be worse than having 2 similar consoles and a unique one.

Mark Rhein can laugh all he wants but Nintendo can make better games with 3DS graphics. lol.

”The PS vita is much more powerfull than 3DS they laughed ” ”The 3DS is a lot more fun with better games we laughed” :)

            1. The newest fun game on the Vita is soul sacrifice and that ones full of online pass bullshit already. So please tell me more about your high tech machine with a smooth OS that feels fucking horrible in my hands.

              1. "Big N" is "small n"

I don’t have a Vita dumbass but Nintedward said that sentence like it would be a fact which it isn’t.

              2. “feels fucking horrible in your hands”

I’d imagine morbidly obese hands are unsuitable for this device.

        1. “Mark Rhein can laugh all he wants but Nintendo can make better games with 3DS graphics. lol.”

And yet none of them have yet to show their faces. There are also other games comparable in quality to Nintendo’s games now.

“Xbox 720 and PS4 are ”traditional” next gen console whilst Wiiu is trying to seperate its self from them. I like that though! Having three similar consoles would be worse than having 2 similar consoles and a unique one.”

You know what’s funny? The Wii was superficially a “separate” console; despite all its little differences like a motion controller or the miis or whatever, it was still a traditional console in the end, and the games hardly reflected any difference from traditional games. Honestly, the most innovative console was Steam, because it, like a console, allowed you to play any games you bought on that console. And you didn’t even have to occupy a space in your room for that console, because it was hardwareless. And best of all? It was free.

    4. Just face it guys, Wii U may be labeled as “Next-Gen” because of its release date, but technical-wise its not. The sooner you accept that the better.

      1. Seriously. I love my Wii U for what it is, but everytime I visit a Nintendo site it’s full of delusional people who honestly think it’s on-par with the PS4 and the next Xbox… it’s scary how these fans think.

          1. How can you make such a statement when the PS4 and Next-Box hasn’t even been released? For all you know, the new PS4 controller could be the most entertaining controller yet.

        1. No duh its weaker then ps4 and nextbox. But its been confirmed hundreds of times that its a good amount more powerful then ps360 so please stop spreading misinformation that its the same. Also this gen is a lot closer then you think the Wii U is more like the ps2 in 6 gen. Weaker but not by so huge an ammount its ridiculous like the Wii was.

          1. I never said it was weaker than the 360 or PS3. I said its weaker than the PS4 and its the truth, by a large margin at that. Compare the specs to one another, and the PS4 is obviously the superior one. Of course the Wii U has uniquity because of a second screen, but what’s the point of doing that if you already have a handheld with the same concept? Nintendo thought fans would flock to it just because they did the Wii, but the consumers aren’t as dumb as Nintendo anticipated. Please, don’t live in denial, just admit that the Wii U isn’t as great as it was promised and move on. I bought a Wii U, I know. Its a waste too, there should be no reason we have to get titles we were promised at launch like Pikmin 3 and the Wonderful 101. Its ridiculous.

            1. First off I was not replying to you, I was replying to X-bob (this site organizes comments weird). 2nd I have seen the specs as well, Its not as large pf a margin as you think think more along the lines of x-box to ps2, or n64 to ps1, then PS3 to Wii. 3rd I am not in denial I have my Wii U and 19 games for it, 22 if you count vc (This does not include Wii games). And 3rd I am not in denial I happen to highly enjoy my Wii U it may even beat out the GCN as my favorite console in the future. I also plan to get a PS4 cause I really enjoy Sony’s exclusives.

              1. The PS4 does look very cool, due to its social, and online features, but I honestly do not really care about power. We could still be playing with SNES graphics or even ps1 graphics for 3d as long as the games are good thats all that matters.

    5. i just bought the game skyward sword limited edition and is garbage
the wii remote looks like crap the orchestra soundtrack sucks full of mistakes and the game is just ok, the controls are not responsive at times but the game is just more of the same….

      1. Care to compose an orchestral soundtrack for us? You know, since you can probably do better than the ones found in LoZ:SS an’ all…

      2. Nice review… o.0 you’re wrong (and not an opinion when you state something as fact) all in all… Don’t quit your day job

      1. And its funny they include smart phone as a next gen but not Wii u, I hopethe game industry crash soon, I need a fresh start

      1. western devs don’t care about japan at all, why do you think sony ps4 is so powerful yet they abandon the Japaneses user base.

        1. You’re going to refuse a valid piece of news from somebody just because you have reason to not like them? That’s the beginning of corruption right there.

          1. He’s a known troll who disses on Nintendo at every chance he gets. Other sites would ban him, not acknowledge him in articles

    6. tech wise its doings things other consoles are yet to..like having a game running in the background as you post comments and watch youtube… whats next gen better graphics mean dick when the games all look and play the some… its funny he said ”haha” thats what i said when a friend asked me if i play gears of war a few months ago lol epic is trash

    7. How can a gMing engine “come to” the Wii U. Isn’t that up to whoever is developing the game? Maybe a developer will be able to make Unreal Engine 4 work on the Wii U. It is scalable afterall.

    8. but..but…the news came from Aeolus (a known Nintendo hater now writing for a Nintendo site…go figure) so of course it’ll have some anti-Nintendo agenda!!! Anyways, don’t really care as I’m more excited on what Unity (UE’s fiercest competitor) has to offer.

      1. This news is reported everywhere else, even more salaciously than how Aeolus put it. It’s not something he just made up on the spot for some “anti-Nintendo agenda.” Integrity, please.

    9. >Hahaha no.” Rein said, with expert comedic timing. The room erupted with laughter. As the laughs died down

      >Aeolus

Somehow i feel that this is just an elaborate troll

    10. That sucks.. Oh well. Nintendo is still doing great things. And will continue to do fine. This UE4 would have been great to have though! Gotta admit!

    11. “It will be scalable to accommodate many platforms.” Then “Wii U? Hahaha no.”
This guy sounds like a prick.

          1. Hardly, that’s very likely the case when the demo was ran with a GTX 680, which is a 3TF GPU for $450+ against a 1.84TF GPU on a console that will likely launch for more or less that price.

Unless you want to go ahead and show me that Epic went out of their way to put effort in the PS4’s demo, then go ahead and try asking them yourself.

            1. Why wouldn’t Sony want a demo with a ton of effort for their PS4 reveal?

You can see from the trailer itself how they tried to make PS4 demo look better with how they added meteors and some fireball to distract you from the awful lighting/textures/lack of FoE. There is a huge enough difference that it’s obvious it’s not just due to lazyness. Heck, the PS4 demo was even running at half the framerate. You don’t need to ask the people who made the demo to see that for yourself to figure this stuff out.

              1. Because the demo itself looked quite sloppy, and even certain textures weren’t loading up as they should. Virtually every PS4 “demo” shown looks better than their UE4 demo, a lot of people are noticing the slap-dash demo that was.

Also, not sure what the hell you’re even going with, I’m not seeing anything particularly “added” to the PS4 demo over the 680 one side by side, I am seeing janky framerate and awful textures, though. Yes, stuff like this does need to be asked, especially when they’re trying to promote their engine on this next-generation console, otherwise, what the hell is guesswork going to be doing?

                Use your head.

                1. I just said what they added on though. “they added meteors and some fireball”. See? Right there. There is no guesswork involved, you can see it for yourself. If their primary focus console-wise is next gen, and the PS4 is a next gen console, why would you think that it’s due to lazyness that it looks bad? The lighting is worse for a reason. The textures are worse for a reason. It’s a hardware limitation, no getting past that.

                  1. Care to point out these added objects in a timestamped YT URL? I must be missing something.

No, it really isn’t limitations–no reason for such a terrible demo when nearly every other PS4 one is looking better than it. Something is up and there is no reason for you to underestimate the PS4 based on one demo.

Simple fact, you can twist what you think is the reason all you want, people have good eyes in this industry. And I will bet it’s due to poor optimization in a perhaps short time frame to present something on the console; that’s the kind of outcome that makes more sense than “hardware limitations”.

                    1. To add to that, yes a HD7870 ballpark GPU is inferior to a 680 GTX, but I highly, highly doubt they’re expecting that GPU to be the recommended requirement to pull off their engine with acceptable visuals; that demo was not acceptable, it was nonsense, and after seeing the now confirmed to be real time Deep Down, those “limitations” you suggest plain and simply are not the case.

                    2. http://i45.tinypic.com/xnu9hx.png

The reason other demos look better would be BECAUSE they don’t run UE4, you know. For it to be watered down that much, after attempts to add effects that do nothing and remove those that do take a toll on the system, you’d think it’d be obvious how much of a difference in power there is. The fact that the PS4 used a “super-PC” architecture only makes it more clear that it’s a hardware limitation.

                      1. That’s not the point. If you’re promoting a game engine (which yes I know is more than just graphics), you should be standing out as the best compared to others, if it’s looking inferior to pre-alpha or competing engine demos on the same console, something is horribly, horribly wrong. Such is the case with UE4 on the PS4, Epic already screwed up with the terrible art direction of their PC demo(s), the PS4 one only serves to add insult on top of injury and I would not be shocked at all if my scenario involving poor optimization was indeed the case for that disaster.

At any rate, this all speculation until either one of us is proven wrong by word of mouth; not guesswork. Whether or not somebody wants to take to Twitter or wherever Epic can be contacted for details of the PS4 demo remains to be seen.

        1. You impersonated a Kotaku employee so that you could fabricate this interview, and then post this fake bullshit on the site. Don’t fuck with us. Get off this site and don’t come back, criminal.

          1. So what you’re sayin is when someone is in need of an obnoxious, longwinded, pretentious yellowbelly polecat, you’re the ‘man’. lol No argument there, pal.

    12. Uhm… this is kinda disappointment for me. Not because I need ultra cool graphics, which won’t even PS4 and Nextbox have as good as the PC, but because of that ignorance from developers. They still don’t get it, that Wii U is next-gen.
I know, that Wii graphics couldn’t race with PS3 and X360 but everyone, that really knows more games than BF, CoD and Halo must admit, that Wii had more exclusives and most of them was even twice better as those on PS3 and X360. I have PS3, gaming PC and Wii and I love Wii as PC… almost :D
Didn’t they say, that Wii U can run this engine? Everyone’s just talking trash to Wii U owners now, but i think that after E3’s reveals like new Zelda, Mario, Super Smash, maybe Metroid (please, make it happen) and maybe new surprises, they will just crawl back and try to do somethin’ with this platform. This will be probably EA scenario :D

              1. Its more fitting like that because the industry hasnt crashed yet. But its certainly harkening just wait till the Durango comes and shits all over everything with their always online DRM

      1. No they are not. ps2 was weak compared to Gamecube and xbox, then it wins the generation. Wii was weak compared to ps3 and xbox 360, then it wins the generation. the weaker console usually wins.

        1. "Big N" is "small n"

They were weak but the PS2 had the crappiest gaming performance in multiplatform games and the Wii didn’t even get those games.

          1. "Big N" is "small n"

I personally don’t care much about the graphics BUT NINTENDO PROMISED A “TREMENDEOUSLY POWERFUL SYSTEM” THAT GETS “ALL.OF THE 3RD PARTY BLOCKBUSTERS NEXT TO NINTEMDO GAMES”

^This = Nothing what happened Reggie also said “Wii U can probably fend off the competition (PS4)” in terms of power.

I know “gameplay over graphics” but those words are no excuse for leaving the hardware behind. If you want certain developers to support your system then you must provide a system that meets their expectations. Nintendo can’t throw the Wii U into their faces and say “Deal with it” but expect them to support it. They did the same mistake Sony did last gen and we saw what happened *cough* 20fps*cough*

    13. The Wii U is not “next gen”. You guys need to realize, we are in the same situation we were in with the Wii. Nintendo releases a console that is slightly more powerful then the current generation platforms, then Sony and Microsoft come out with a console that just blows whatever Nintendo has away. And even with EA not wanting to support Wii U, and no Frostbite 2 or Unreal Engine 4 , the third party support for the Wii U for the future is looking terribly thin. I was thinking about getting the Wii U for a while now, but I think i’ll pass this time.

      1. keep telling yourself that. does this gen have a touch screen controller? or a social network like miiverse? or video chat? no. Wii U is just as next gen as ps4 but without the power.

        1. "Big N" is "small n"

Can the Wii U be powered off without stopping the game?
Can the Wii U let you help others during gameplay?
Can the Wii U record and share in game footage?

          1. yes
            yes
            and soon
you can already post screen shots as you play and people can comment on them… something no ones done on a console til nintendo.

          2. Buddy, these are just ridiculous arguments. Really, I don’t need those things in my life and I’m playing on all platforms, not like you :)
That first question, my old PSP still can do that… so it’s epic handheld, isn’t it? And it failed on market ;)
That second question… like.. really? Games in this generation on PS3/X360 were so easy, that medium difficulty is like easy to me and hard is like meh… clauses like Dark Souls and Demons Souls are minimal here.
On U you can post screens on… but.. Why I’m wastin’ my time trying to describe it to you, when you know everything about all consoles :) Keep posting, reading comments from little boy with parents money amuses me :)

            1. The PSP did not “fail” in the market, the system is like 80 million strong worldwide and still doing well in Japan, what the fuck are you smoking?

Where does this PSP is a failure thing even come from? It’s the most successful Non-Nintendo handheld gaming device on the planet.

              1. 80M was amazing for Sony’s first handheld. But just because it didn’t get close to DS (the highest selling platform ever) it’s deemed a failure. The gaming community is full of tossers who think graphics and sales are THE BE ALL AND END ALL of gaming.

The Gamecube is my favorite console ever. Not the DS , no the PS2 or any other platform. The fucking Gamecube.

                1. that’s actually my favorite platform too, I boot up the Gamecube nintendo titles more than I do with Wii ones.

                  1. Exactly. I don’t care how much Wiiu sells , i’m not Nintendo. But , you naturally want them not to lose money or to sell a low amount that damages them.

In an ideal world Nintendo , Sony and even Microcock would sell the same amount and make profit off every console sold so they can invest it into better things to provide us with.

              2. which doesn’t necessarily say much given past competitors, but the fact that it is still relevant in its homeland nearly 8 years later is saying something.

              3. Last years on market was for PSP very bad at non-japan market, third party developers just stopped doin’ games for it and even GoW couldn’t save it. It was selling so well because of piracy option. Even if you sell 80 milion of consoles, their succes is based on how many games can developers sell on them… and with PSP it was bad. If you are thinking, that succes is based only on how many consoles is sold, what the fuck are you smoking?

                1. That makes absolutely no sense. Even more so that you think “piracy” sold the PSP.

In that case, such a thing also sold the DS with the abundance of flashcarts which is far more easier than installing custom PSP FW with Pandora Batteries and whatnot.

          3. Hahahaha people today just can’t understand that Nintendo is not Sony, Wii U is not PS4, Miiverse is not Playstation Network, Math is not Science, Cats are not dogs, tablets are not smartphones. But, you will see similarities and differences in all of them, in this case customers will decided what they will buy or not in the end.

      2. Oh, f*ck off…..Thats so great because it took microsoft 4 years to make the xbox profitable and sony even longer….while nintendo earned millions every year…..

    14. Are 2 Zelda games, Pokemon, Metroid, Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, or the 2 Smash Bros games coming to any non-Nintendo system?
Satoru, Shigeru and Reggie would have the same reaction: LOLOLOLOLOL!!

Having this engine would’ve been nice, but it won’t make or break the Wii U. The
truth is with Nintendo seemingly outmatched and missing out on ‘AAA’ titles for
over a decade, they’re still profitable… even though other gaming companies fall
      around them.

      1. Are 2 games of an antiquated franchise, a mediocre RPG series that’s even worse on consoles, mediocre excuse of a racing game tailor made for non-gamers, sequel to relatively unnoticeable action game/DMC clone now exclusive to an ailing platform, two pieces of something we’ve not only never seen, but can potentially be worse than the previous versions are coming to arguably better systems?

Nope, and I honestly do not care in the slightest.

          1. This is why people don’t take Aeolus seriously. Virus made an excellent point, especially considering that other parties are falling while Nintendo have tons of money in the bank, and even though they got off to a rocky start with both of their recent consoles, if the 3DS is anything to go by, they are gradually picking up steam and both will end up massive successes. To simply handwave Nintendo is just ignorant considering the fact that they have stuck around and done very well despite their difficulties.

        1. "Big N" is "small n"

I love it! But I can laugh about bad news and the damage control above because I am one of the people who thinks that it’s a console and not a god.

    15. So let me get this strait this is a Nintendo site that post negative news that is submitted by a well known troll. Smh

    16. Nintendo’s definition of next-gen: new gameplay innovation… and more power.

Epic’s definition of next-gen: EVEN MOARRR POWERRRRR!!!

    17. If people would have asked if the engine would be used on PS3/360 this is what he would have said:

“You know, that’s a very good question; but unfortunately, believe it or not, the answer s no. I know, I know, it’s shocking right? The PS3 and 360 are such awesome, epic, sexy systems, but at least the engine will run beautifully on the next-gen systems, excluding the Wii U, which is not next-gen. It’s not next-gen okay? The other two systems will be next-gen because they have mind blowing specs that blow away PC, but the Wii U’s specs are barely comparable to the current-gen systems. Even though generations have nothing to do with graphics or horsepower, I still want to define the systems that way because Epic is all about power. Epic, now you’re playing with POWAH! It’s funny to think that such a scalable engine as UNREAL ENGINE 4 could run on that piece of crap system. We’re not even going to try to get it to run on there because it’s obvious that it can’t since it was made by Nintendo. But anyway, good question about whether it could run on the PS3/360 because they’re so awesome that I was starting to wonder if they could run UE4 myself even though I know that they can’t. Did I mention that the Wii U is current-gen? Because.. it is. The Wii U is current-gen, not next-gen. CURRENT.”

    18. I wonder why people want Nintendo to fail so badly. I don’t care if UE4 comes to Wii U or not, i enjoy my system and that is it. I won’t be missing out on anything seeing as I will eventually get myself a PS4.. For those who can’t get both, it’s understandable but jeez people..just enjoy what you have. I thought gaming was about having fun in your spare time, either being as a hobby, addiction or time killer.

    19. Nintendo aren’t graphic whores like these guys. They don’t privilege amazing graphics above all else. They prefer fun and unique experiences, Wii U is perfect for that.
If they continue with these engines, the cost for making games for next-gen consoles will be higher and smaller developers will either stop making games for them or switch to Nintendo.

    20. I don’t mind that the unreal 4 engine wont be used for the Wii u because I planned on buying one of the two consoles (Xbox or PS4) along with my Wii u that I already have. But do people really have to make snooty remarks and leave it out of the “next-gen” group?

    21. Wow. The industry screams that Nintendo needs support blah blah…then they don’t give Nintendo the opportunity to try something with their new tech. I’m sick of this

    22. So. The wii u has the power to run this engine if it can be scaled down to phones. but they don’t want to put it on the wii u and he’s laughing about it like it’s a it’s a joke to deny his clients his newest product on a device capable of running it? How long before they go out of business?

      1. Who cares about breathing? It’s nothing more than H2O at the end of the day.
Who cares about money? It’s just paper at the end of the day.
Who cares about food? It’s just stuff you eat at the end of the day.
fuck off troll, you’re just a troll at the end of the day

        1. That was a stupid comment you wrote. All the things you listed are a necessity in life. A graphic engine or “electrical machine” is in option to have at the end of the day. Seriously, what was going through your mind when you wrote this?

    23. Mynintendonews did you read the full article at all? It also states:

Epic has been unclear about the Wii U’s support for UE4 in the past, with Epic co-founder Mark Rein telling Videogamer that Epic doesn’t intend to bring the engine to Wii U, but that “if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could.”

      1. People think that graphics are everything. If I wanted a graphic powerhouse gaming machine, I would have bought a PC a long time ago.

        1. I DID buy a pc a long time ago
in a galaxy far, far away
Crysis, Skyrim, and GTA4 graphics mods galore
          yeah….

          1. PC mods are the best. It’s amazing how much stuff players can put into a game to make the experience a lot better. It almost seems as players tend to be more creative than the developers.

    24. All thats leading to a gaming crash….Game production costs rising unstoppably because of the need and resulting pressure from the fanbase for grafics…Devs wont be able to survive -> THQ scenario. And the games will still be bad gameplay wise…..All I want from Nintendo is to team up with japanese talented fresh devs which are anyways more talented than most of the western ones, except maby for some Indies, and then localise all those games not focussed on grafics but on gameplay and fun….You know, all industries will eventually collapse because they want too much, I mean look at the worlds financual situation…..

    25. Fuck you too assblaster…
Nothing Epic makes will ever beat Zelda or Mario titles.
      so,
Hah Hah Hah Hah Hah Hah!!!!!!

    26. Oh no. Now I won’t see the beautiful graphics on my Wii U. Oh wait, since when did I give a shit about graphics. The graphics on PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U are just find for me. Hell, I can play retro games on my PS3 or Wii and have a good time. Developers can have the fucking graphics on their games look as real as real-life, but if the game isn’t fun for me to play, well guess what, I’m not going to give a shit about it.

Seriously, a lot of people get a fucking hard on because the games are looking more realistic and graphics should be the #1 priority in any game development. If would reject a game just because it doesn’t look realistic enough, then I will lose faith in the gaming community. I’m not saying that graphics aren’t important, but it shouldn’t be the main focus in game development. Whatever happened to playing a game to have fun and enjoying it?

        1. There’s a point in a mans life when he loses every shit he ever possessed.
When he doesn’t have a fuck to spare.
          I’m past that point.

    27. Unreal engine 4 is already confirmed to run on WiiU. What the hell is going on here this obviously some developer discrimination for the wiiu I understand the name sucks it appeals to casuals a lot and the power isn’t wat u wanted but Nintendo knows what they are doing with this and are changing their strategy I’ve noticed. The wiiu’s full power is more than 4x that of the ps3 confirmed and thats good enough for me games are becoming very realistic now and soon there will be a limit and Nintendo is giving themselves more space to grow graphically and innovate at the same time with wiiu ps4 looks like weve reached that limit. Imean have u seen Activisions tech demo yeah that’s pretty much enuff once we all get to that point the true innovator and best software will win and that I beleive is nintendo. Wiiu can run unreal engine 4. BUT REMEMBER GUYS A WHILE BACK WHEN THEY ASKED IF UNREAL ENGINE 4 RUNS ON WIIU AND MARK REIN BASICALLY SAID IT CAN BUT THEY THEMSELVES MEANING EPIC WILL NOT BRING.THEIR GAMES TO IT BUT IF A DEVELOPER WANTS TO MAKE AN UNREAL ENGINE 4 GAME ON WIIU THEY CAN . WiiU need not worry Nintendo is already working on next-gen quality engines for wiiu that’ll make it look great like mariogalaxy was last gen or xenoblade2 for example games like metroid prime still have good graphics even today. WiiU is a powerful enuff beast that can take on the ps4 and nextbox updates are coming and games are coming that’ll add alot to the wiiu so we will def see some good changes and as for the ps4 all those features most likely won’t be all available at launch those features are that promises hopefully not broken promises like they did for the ps3 before it launched. I see a bright future for wiiu graphically and featurewise I think bayonetta2 will stun a lot.of people because the developers are trying their best to make it look next gen.Everyone stop hating on nintendo wat did they do to u I’m sure everyone in here as a.child started out as a Nintendo gamer yall guys just need to have faith wiiu sold a ton when.it launched and its sales are picking up again this month

      1. Bro don’t worry about half the comments on this site.

I mean when most of the bad news gets reported by this dude that has some psychotic hatred for Nintendo yet still visits Nintendo sites, and sends news snipits about Nintendo to the sites editors.

        Enough said.

    28. Nintendo was stubborn for a long time since N64 era. I told them that you need to get a lot of third parties in order to boost the Nintendo Wii U’s sales. I told you guys that video game industry will crash in near future. I also urged them to be aggressive to put up TV and Internet ads. I am sad that Epic refused to support Nintendo. I hope that Nintendo and independent video game developers to save the video game industry from crash in near future.

    29. My respect for Rein’s just went through the floor… same goes for Epic.

I’m done with praising their engine, I’ve taken off the tinted glasses and all I see is Unreal Engine 3.5 1/2 not a “next gen engine”. Crytek managed to get their engine running on the Wii U and it looks more amazing than that half-assed engine of Epic’s and even Crytek said their engine ran perfectly on the Wii U so really, I could care less about the Unreal Engine 4-ail.

    30. WOW! He didn’t say that Wii U couldn’t run Unreal engine 4, it’s just not going to be made go run on Wii U. First, I find his initial response extremely immature. I think the industry as a whole is in fragile state, and instead of being divisive, the industry needs to be more united. This type of negative rhetoric against Nintendo is what panics some potential customers, and have them buying a Sony/MS console. Anyhow, I hope Nintendo creates their own engine. I’m constantly amazed how his industry values fanboyism over money. As a long time gamer, this next gen may be the last gen I support. Gaming use to be very positive, but this current gen may have damaged it beyond repair!

    31. Pingback: What's their angle? - Nintendo 3DS Forums

    32. I Guess my Wii U is all about Nintendo games than…while my PS4 will be Third party games of choice…I know graphics aren’t everything but 3rd party devs are focusing on “pretty” graphics and gameplay. (Good thing Nintendo makes better gameplay! That shines though.) I wish Nintendo would have made the Wii U’s hardware like the PS4 so I don’t have to buy the danm PS4 and Xbox 720… *sigh* (Though, at least Nintendo has amazing 1st and 2nd party games so I don’t regret buying a Wii U.)

    33. Any gamer knows its not about the engine, right? How well did MH3 score? Luigis mansion? Are those games using state of the art engines? Nope. I guarantee they scored better than some games using these phenomenal engines. Case closed. Not saying I wouldn’t have appreciated UE4. We all would have. But is it required to make a great game? And if its used…is that game guaranteed to be great? The answer is simple. Fuck no.

    34. What a surprise, Aeolus sending this story in to provoke some butthurt haha get a life, mate.

The fact is, yes, it can run on WiiU, they just aren’t PERSONALLY, thats a key word here, supporting it.
Nothing is stopping a company from acquiring the U4 engine, and using it on WiiU, Epic have already said this, like months ago. Epic themselves however, aren’t supporting it, which we’ve known for months and months.

Nice try Aeolus. And bit of a news flash, most of us are buying a PS4 or a 720, or already own a PC, so i don’t know what “battle” you think you’re winning.

    35. Well now if this isnt the most unprofessional thing I have ever seen. I’m positive it was confirmed before the Wii U came out it could run UE4 unless they modified it more so now it doesnt. What people DONT GET IS XBOX 360 AND PS3 ARE LAST GEN. WII U IS CURRENT GEN BECAUSE THE 8TH GEN HAS STARTED. WHEN THE PS4 AND XBOX 720 COME OUT WII U, PS4 AND XBOX 720 WILL BE CURRENT GEN.

    37. wait does it matter? I realized that I could care less when I play a game with good graphics so what the matter then?

    38. This is concerning news.
But I will stick with my decision, and I will stick with Nintendo console wise.
IF Nintendo was to go under, that would be the day I gave up on console gaming.

And most… well, all of this kind of news has not been that Wii U cant handle it, but that
developers and publishers just don’t want or think its not worth it to support Nintendo.

      1. Damn dude. I mean, I love Nintendo, but I would just playb with my PS3 if Nintendo went down (which it wont). You should try other consoles (if you havent)

        1. I have, owned both 360 and ps3, and now latest, Wii U.
I can barely find the time to play at one console, and Wii U is amazing,
since most of the games I can play on the gamepad, so even if my wife occupy’s the tv, gaming can still go on.
Its not that I love Nintendo, but I dont really care for playstation or xbox either.
And as for gaming, my pc would be more than enough to keep me satisfied.

    39. Jesus fucking christ! What IS coming to WiiU?!! I love Nintendo, but we really need more stuff from the outside.

    40. I think the joke here is the laziness of 3rd party game developers and game engine developers. They want pretty graphics to sell the game and we all know how well that works out in the end.
If Nintendo is losing its 3rd party because of a perceived lack of graphics and hardware power. They need to work on their system’s momentum. They really need to get their games library beefed up, this should have a been a priority at launch.
The gap in 1st choice games was a small crack now it feels like a gaping crevasse.

Its always the same argument, and its still a large segment of people whining about graphics fidelity, more power, more skin pores.
Does seeing the skin pores on a game character make it a better game?

In the end the technology in the eyes of the masses is fleeting… otherwise its on to the next.
On to the next great hyped game engine!

Nintendo was wise to get off that train. They’re attitude of wait and see is a good one.
I’m sure that tech will be in their next console cycle and more affordable for the gamers too.
The reason I bought my Wii-U is the Nintendo experience, the other formats have one or two things I like but none of them have Mario, Link, or Samus. Sack boy, Master Chief and Kratos are it… I played one LBP game and found it boring. I played Halo3 and loved it, played its multi-player but after that… its been a steady decline of the Bungie created universe. I never like Kratos, a lot of people like him simply because he is a perceived anti-hero.

Nintendo needs to put out its wares fast and not worry about the 3rd parties. The 3rd party devs. were fickle then and they are fickle now.

      :D

    41. oh come on

we already had that topic and it’s bullshit.. a couple weeks ago they confirmed that UE4 would be able to run on wii U but that they wouldn’t offer support for porting it… considering that UE4 will likely also be ported to mobile devices i believe that this most recent statement is complete bollocks

      1. in hindsight after reading that quote a little more thoroughly: nowhere does he say that wii U wouldn’t be capable of running UE4… he just reconfirms that epic themselves will not make any efforts to port UE4 to the wii U
back then they stated that it was up to developers to port UE4 to wii U if they wanted to have it on there

    42. The Nintendo Reviewer

As industry professionals it makes me sick to see them patronize Nintendo like that. I really worry for this industry. This obsession with graphics, this childish behavior throughout, maybe the industry needs to crash again. Well you go ahead and be Nintendo haters Epic Games, and Aeolus who still needs to learn that you don’t have to been an asshole to so many people and “warranted” asshole behavior only helps you justify it to yourself to make you feel high and mighty. I’m still staying with Nintendo because the games are fun to play. I love the Wii U and Nintendo’s games.

    43. I’m not sure if this is official as the “laughter in room dies” bit sounds like a petty attack on the wii u console and “Thanks, Aeolus” part too. I mean no offence but your name has a bad reputation. Also with the fact that UE4 can scale even on mobile devices right? Didn’t they also say devs can port UE4 games to the wii u if they want? The gaming community (Involving gamers, devs etc) is disgusting. If this is official, they could’ve just said “It will not” but i guess laughing at the idea is the way to go.

    44. Pingback: Epic Games Says Unreal Engine 4 Won’t be On Wii U | GenGAME

      1. Especially these days yeah. Like Ubisoft with AnvilNext, Capcom with MT Framework or Retro with the original engine they are making specifically for the Wii U. Just to name a few.

      2. It’s been suggested that Epic is crusty because Nintendo chose to endorse Unity rather than Unreal. So they are gonna pout just like EA I guess.

    45. Pingback: Rein Attempts To Explains Why He Laughed At Unreal Engine 4 On Wii U (Laughs Again) | My Nintendo News

    46. I couldn’t care less about those kind of news, and I believe gamers who aren’t shallow enough to think only graphics matter should shrug it off as well.

    47. Mark Rein basically just buried the Wii U and validated every single troll out there. Regardless to the fact of what he is saying is true, the way that he said it, where he said it, and the fact that he made a clear distinct between the Wii U and “next-gen” consoles (being the PS4, 720, and Steambox) just absolutely shatters every argument that we have tried to make in defense of the Wii U.

Since Nintendo wants to keep quiet on every damn thing that doesn’t help matters at all. I have a Wii U and I will still enjoy playing all the great games coming out for it. The Wii U “IS” a next-gen system no matter what anyone says (and BTW Mark Rein has contradicted himself because he said 2 years ago that UE4 COULD run on the Wii U) but this really just was a shot across the bow to wake Nintendo up.

Iwata, you need to get your head out of butt. It’s Nintendo against the world. Nobody wants to back Nintendo. Nobody wants to support Nintendo. Not people are making FUN of Nintendo. It’s time to dump this silly. passive attitude of yours. It’s time to drop the big bombs NOW. Don’t even wait until E3. The next Nintendo Direct for their sake better be EPIC.

      Pun intended.

    48. I really don’t give a rats ass if Wii U don’t get 3rd party dev. 80% of those games are fps anyway. Same shit different title third parties. At least Luigi’s Mansion is different from Mario games. Pikmin is different from Zelda and Starfox is different from Seamus. After all All Stars jocked off SSBB.

      1. I totally forgot about that. I guess that they are wearing the same salty-trunks that EA is. How immature the gaming industry has become. It’s sad.

    49. if you guys read the article , he actually never said it was the wii u’s power that was the problem … its pretty much that he has no intention on bringing the engine to the wii u , which doesnt really make sense… if it can run it , why not bring it? it has to be because of the small install base and the fact that its geared towards the CASUAL GAMERS and NINTENDO FANBOYS and they don’t feel like they can make profit off that demographic.

      1. So naturally he would choose to port the engine over to the PS4 and 720 which have an install base of ZERO……………….

…………..and have a smaller install base than casuals and Nintendo fanboys with more people having Wii’s than PS3’s and 360s.

        100 million Wiis
        74 million 360s
        73 million PS3s

Just like EA, their hatred is totally transparent. They hide behind ridiculous excuses and don’t even realize just how much that they are tripping over their own lies.

        1. that’s also what i don’t understand they have a 0 insall base for crying out loud!! and same with EA worrying about ‘risks’ yet they bring bf4 to next gen systems , its obvious these guys have no faith in the system
