Banjo-Kazooie Composer Wishes Ex-Rare Staff Members Would Make Banjo 3 For Wii U

banjo_kazooieOn a recent episode of Game Grumps, Banjo-Kazooie composer and former Rare staff member Grant Kirkhope says he keeps wishing that all ex-Rare staffers would unite, form a company and ask Nintendo to give them the funds needed to make Banjo 3 for Wii U. While it would be a dream come true for many fans of the series, the mentioned scenario is highly unlikely, as Rare is a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios, which also owns the Banjo IP.

The latest game in the series, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, was released in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and, partly because its gameplay and story, it wasn’t considered a direct sequel to the first two games, both of which were originally released for Nintendo 64.

“I keep wishing that all the ex-Rare staffers would just get together and form a company, and go to Nintendo and say ‘give us the money. We’ll make you Banjo 3 for the Wii U’ or whatever. …Just make Banjo 3 like it should have been made back then and it would be great, and it would be great on Wii U, and all the ex-Rare guys would be together again all happy and kissing each other. … I just keep thinking we should just give it a try.”

  1. It wasn’t an interview. It was an episode of a YouTube series. For the love of god, they just played games he’d composed music for.

            1. no no no dont ban me. I love this site and my friends are all on here. if im doing something wrong please contact me via twitter. thank you all. i love you friends <3

      1. I don’t think it’s worth it to buy the Rare that microsoft now owns, since most of the original people are gone. If it was the Rare from the N64 era, then yes. The only reason it would be good if they bought them back would be to own Rare’s IPs so Nintendo could make new games with them.

        1. ” The only reason it would be good if they bought them back would be to own Rare’s IPs so Nintendo could make new games with them.”

Yes, everyone knows this, and everyone thinks this is MORE than enough reason.
Absolutely no one is saying: “Yes, Nintendo should totally buy back Rare. Ya’know, not necessarily because of the franchises they own, but because of the mediocre leftover kinect-guys”. It’s all for Banjo & Kazooie and Conker and such.

        2. Why is everyone saying buy Rare back? its Microsoft’s IP not Rare’s. For this to happen Nintendo would have to buy the BK IP not the studio who developed it and after most of the original Rare staff have left the studio, Nintendo would only have to create a new Dev studio and recruit those who worked on the previous iterations of BK.

          1. They’re Microsoft’s property as long as Rare is Microsoft’s property, for the IP’s do belong to Rare.

  2. RARE isn’t what they used to be right now. And I hope that all former members of RARE, Ltd. return to their own roots and make a new Banjo-Kazooie title for the Wii U.

      1. Microsoft owns the rights to Banjo Kazooie ON HOME CONSOLES. They could make a Banjo Kazooie on 3DS and be perfectly fine.

    1. I think that was the point. Forget Rare, it would be a new company all together. Of course that is when the company was actually good so it would make sense for those people to get back together and make some awesome games, certainly for Nintendo because there is a point of freedom and great people to get ideas from at Nintendo.

      1. They generally just spread out into many different game companies, most notably Free Radical Design, which is now Crytek UK.

  3. Can’t see that happening………………ever. Still surprised there was a DS version of Viva Pinata to be honest.

pm me for 3DS and Wii U id’s.

  4. Well at least he even wants it on the Wii U. Maybe Nintendo will hear and buy Rare’s IP’s. Or maybe I’ll be completely wrong and Microsoft will kill off the franchise along with the old Rare

    1. What i’ve been thinking for a while is that, Microsoft could take all the guys at Rare right now and do new stuff (shooters, kinect, or $hit like that). They need to get rid of the old ip’s because the actual Rare never gonna make an awesome videogame with those IP’s(we know why); the best for microsoft is to let nintendo do something for their “child machines” and then you’ll see the potential of WiiU and 3DS arise. But it’s something microsoft will not let happen, because they know, if only One old game by Rare is done for WiiU, they’ll regret it.

      1. Yup, forget Rare and the people that work there as well as the people they work for. Get the originals to form their own company and then there will be new IP’s to go along with it.

  5. I’d give money via kickstarter for it to happen, anything man, I want this game. And i’ve never even thought about using Kickstarter, it’s largely BS.

    1. I’m a profound rapper, we could use someone like in our next music video.
Call me by praying to me. I’ll get the message and i’ll message you in the speed of a tornado.

  7. Cmon Nintendo, just do it.
    What exactly would you loose?
One of the most famous game composers i the 90’s, and some of the most famous developers ever, just do it -__-

    1. I’m sure Nintendo would “just do it”, but as stated time and time again, Nintendo does NOT have the rights to Banjo-Kazooie. So it isn’t really Nintendo’s call.

        1. Exactly. If the old members of Rare and Nintendo got together, they’d easily come up with a load of great ideas for a new IP.

  8. im actually just beat banjo kazooie on the 360, and playing tooie right now, about half way threw, great games, i was just about to play it, but microsoft ruined them, and rare basicaly said that they liked working for nintendo and it was better, well too bad microsoft 720 will put microsoft out of the console buisness from the ps4, they are by far the worst of the 3, and from the sound of the 720 it will be worse than the wii, and the worst exclusives

    1. I would be surprised if it comes a console that will be as good as the Wii this gen. We have to consider that the Wii did what it was supposed to do very very well. It was just the last years it started to go downhills.

      1. i think differently, we got xenoblade and the last story, those games alone, made that the best year in my book,,even if there was nothing else, we still got some of the best games this whole gen, and now we are getting pandoras tower, thats the games nintendo needs to bring over like fatal frame

  9. Nintendo, you better by Banjo-Kazooie, Conker and Perfect Dark because those games would make the Wii U all the more awesome.

Think about it, Diddy Kong Racing 2 with Banjo back in his HD glory also a more awesome version of Conker.

Conker’s Bad Fur Day 2 would be even more awesome!!

    1. Actually, Nintendo can make Diddy Kong Racing 2 if they wanted. Just with a whole new cast of characters to go along with Diddy.

      1. Well from what I’ve been hearing from their next gen console… I don’t think Microsoft will be around for long anyway.

        1. If Microsoft lose too much money from the industry, then they’ll back out. Sony probably will if it continues too. Nintendo on the other had, won’t back down even if they have no money left.

        2. I won’t miss them if they do get out of the console business. The only way I will miss them if they start to bring out more exclusives. Without exclusives they’re irrelevant to me. Sorry, Microsoft but I don’t buy a console for multi plats or DLC, I buy them for exclusives.

      1. I know, but why? I also know that Rare had some of the most memoralbe games in the 90s. My question is that, why has Microsoft ruined Rare (if my understanding is correct)?

      2. Because they already had another company working with them called retro, I guess after how bad star fox was Nintendo hated them, and when Microsoft offer a deal Nintendo didn’t think and sold it,

        1. The majority owners of Rare, the Stamper Bros. sold their 51% share to Microsoft, so that left Nintendo with 49%, meaning Microsoft had more control. Nintendo didn’t really have any kind of choice about selling.

              1. No I heard it was because rare was lagging it when it came to making games specifically during the gamecube era and the quality wasnt all there anymore.

  10. Ganonseviltwinbrother

Ok questionnaire is owned by Microsoft
But what about banjo and I’m confused about donkey
    Please don’t be a J.A about it

    1. Rare has the rights to Banjo-Kazooie’s IP, Nintendo has the rights to Donkey Kong’s IP (they just allowed Rare to make games with DK, a la Retro with Metroid). Basically Nintendo needs to buy the rights to Banjo from Rare in order to make games off of that IP.

  11. Maybe Rare should just give the “IP” to another company, it’s legally possible though I think. I mean if they are not going to do anything much with Banjo at Rare, then it would make sense to give it to another like the Ex-Rare members who probably want to.

        1. He’s saying that no dev in their right mind would give their IP away to someone who can possibly hurt them with it.

          1. Yeah, because Nuts and Bolts had amazing sales and made a lot of profit like the original N64 games………. Oh wait.

            1. Of course it hasn’t, but they’re not going to give away the IP because it can be used against Microsoft by Nintendo.

                1. All I’m saying is that Microsoft aren’t going to just give any IPs to Nintendo, and they’re not going to sell them back for a low price.

                  1. Well, Banjo may make a lot of money on the Wii U, so selling the Ip for a high price wouldn’t be a huge problem.

                    1. Well honestly I trust the Ex-Rare people.. The only thing they will probably “ruin” is Nuts and Bolts by making Banjo the true three. And I still believe it’s possible, maybe Microsoft may have some heart of change, maybe.. Faith can probably work, at least..

Besides, Microsoft hurted a lot of fans, so it’s our turn. :D I’m sure it will get a lot of sales the same way. Just like the N64. And I don’t get how Nintendo would use it against Microsoft, unless one of you mean they don’t make it like N&B, if that’s it, then that’s a good thing, not bad mainly. xD

  12. No need to attack you, Grant Kirkhope, but Rare belongs to Microsoft now, and Microsoft does never ever going to let one of their properties to be on a game for an Nintendo console, but it’s okay though. But Rare could still make games for Nintendo handhelds, because Microsoft does not have a handheld market at all. If Nintendo buys Rare back from Microsoft, Then you’re right and it will be Banjo-Threeie for the Wii U, is that okay for you, Grant?

  13. I’d love for that to happen, plus Microsoft isn’t even using Rare’s IP’s to their full potential, or not at all. I loved Nut’s and Bolt’s, I thought it was a fun game, you don’t hear many people say they liked the game. I know they can’t technically make it on the Wii U, but that doesn’t mean they can’t on the 3DS. Since you know, MS doesn’t have a handheld system, and considering we got some Rare games on the DS even well after Rare was working for Microsoft. I just hope one day Ninty buys Rare with all their IP’s, that would really help the Wii U and give more games to the 3DS.

    1. I rather have them just buy the IPs from Rare than buying back the company considering most of the staff from the glory days have gone elsewhere (some of them to Retro).

  14. Theres no reason for nintendo to buy rare, everyone has left from the old rare only thing they could do is buy back the IP’s and microsoft would ask for a ludicrous amount of $ for them so unfortunately it won’t happen

        1. reggie doesnt make anything good happen, he just makes shitty decisions and makes nintendo get laughed at. me and all people i know just make fun of reggie and its great, because he sucks so bad. thats the only thing he brought is sucking and being made fun off and before you go all defensive, just look at what he done. dont say he brought gamecube and wii to life because he didnt and those are supposed to be the 2 worst consoles they made

          1. Can you even read? I just said he makes nothing happen and that he’s an advertising front. What are you, 12?

The Gamecube was a fantastic console, but went up against the PS2. The Wii was also a great console, with some spectacular games.

            1. hes the noa president, you dont think he has nothing to do with anything get your head out of your ass retard. your the type of person everybody hates or moved on from nintendo, from being such a blind fanboy

              1. Nintendo is 99% controlled by the Japanese HQ. Nintendo of America’s only real responsibilities are to allow localisations and advertising. I have supported Nintendo for years, and only got annoyed at you because you kept saying repeating what I had said, then said I was wrong.

                1. im talking about the localizations thats why i hate noa, not nintendo as a whole, noa, reggie just puts up the middle finger in all the games we wanted really with the wii, xenoblade was because of gamestop not noa, they made a deal with them to be exclusive there because they saw the demand, so noa doesnt care about there fans, the end, there bull shit and plenty people think that unless there blind fanboys

                  1. No company cares about customers. If they did, they’d just give everything away. We live in a world ruled by corporations. Gamestop forced the localisation of Xenoblade because they presumed they could make some kind of profit. NOA is just utter crap and the only thing Reggie is good for, is a laugh.

  15. nate the demon hunter

Maybe if we all spam Nintendo they might listen because all companies (except ea) listen to their customers

  16. Actually I didn’t spam anything. I’m just trying to be calm and sensitive. I mean Rare is not coming back to Nintendo? Well we’ll just wait until we’ll see what happens between Nintendo and Microsoft if Nintendo gets Rare or not. I’m not going to attack you, guys. I’m being very calm and sensitive.

  17. as a fan, I miss that time when Rare games were packed with shiny collectables and awesome gameplay, These guys should live their dream and get back to making games for people who always loved their work on Nintendo consoles!

  18. Working in technology you get to hear these type of things. As have said on many occasion nintendo are working on some old classics ie f zero, eternal darkness not just up scaled but brand new games.Maybe they can find solution to this game.

  19. That would be a match made in heaven and hearing one of the greatest game music composers of all time take the words right out of my mouth feels pretty dang good. Too bad it’s just that and always will be that–a fantasy.

  20. Everyone hates Microsoft for this, but keep in mind that Nintendo was the one who sold Rare away. Nintendo was also the one who didn’t greenlight Eternal Darkness 2. I wonder just how many more games Nintendo hasn’t allowed in recent years.

    1. Nintendo had no choice but to sell Rare to Microsoft. And what is Eternal Darkness to do with this, the game was being made by Silicon Knights, not Rare.

  21. MY DREAM! They should totally attempt this. Nintedo could maybe buy the rights to the game for even just a while from Microsoft. Then, when it is all over the Banjo Kazooie creators can just join Nintendo and make new IP’s! :D

  22. Really hope they would do it! Seems unlikely though but seriously we all want it! Also Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie would be hugely welcomed to the eshop! I know that’s also unlikely cos of whatever…. and they aren’t on the Wii shop after all this time but still we can dream!

  23. I rather Nintendo buy the IPs. The soul of Rare died the minute it went to Microsoft. It’s a shame about Banjo it’s a real money making franchise but only Nintendo would know how to make it a seller.

  24. Here is something to think about: If hardcore graphics and fps is all Sony and Microsoft brag about to Wii U owners, why is Microsoft holding on to Banjo-Kazooie with no plans to make another game?

      1. The signature limit expands when necessary lol! If we could get 50,000 sigs that might do something!! P.S: I SIGNED!

  25. Funny how ex-Rare people wish they stayed making games for Nintendo. Seriously, Rare and Nintendo was one of the most prolific collaboration in video games industry ever. For example, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Donkey Kong 64, Blast Corp, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, just to name a few. I wish they never split. The GameCube and the Wii and the Wii U would have had more big hits, and sequel for Killer Instinct which would be awesome. Also GameCube would have gotten sequel to Conker Bad Fur Day.

  26. Don’t fight and scratch my little bear you’ll soon need bigger underwear. Banjo I watch you play and can’t think of much to say. Tooty says she’s fine with me, if you go home I’ll set her free. That golden piece was for me now harder still the game will be. YOU take the prize on show while up the winning stairs I go. THAT was a secret how did you know? DID MY sister tell you so?

  27. Thats right swim under there. Icy water takes up double air. Here he is the fun begins my tricks and traps lets see who wins. Get this wrong for grunty’s sakes then a lava bath you’ll take.

  28. It’s not fair I WANTED TO WIN. OH how I wanted to be real thin. You take the prize on show while up the winning stairs I go.

  29. Dingpot Dingpot on the bench, who’s the prettiest looking witch? What’s the matter Banjo is it too tough, let me know when you had enough. Hurry Kungo push that switch. I’m tired of being an ugly old witch.

    1. The only thing he’s done thats really worth mentioning is DKC music, and even then he worked with 2 other people on it.
Kirkhope has done Banjo Kazooie, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64, and Kingdoms of Amalaur.

  30. I wish microsoft never bought rare. They aren’t using rare’s talent the way they should be. Why have the makers of banjo kazooie making kinect sports is just wrong

  31. The Nintendo Reviewer

Wouldn’t it be nice. For a true Banjo 3 game to be made the way it should be though one of two things have to happen. Either Nintendo buys ownership of the IP from what remains of Rare or Nintendo completely buys Rare back from Microsoft and all of Rare’s IP with it. The later would mean great sequels for Banjo, Conker and Perfect Dark =D.

Here’s a FaceBook group to show love for classic 90s Rare: https://www.facebook.com/groups/400459883307407/

  32. Buying Rare won’t do a thing for Nintendo or us gamers .. Most people have left Rare so the people who made all the awsome games are gone so changes are that if Nintendo bought Rare the new games would .. well .. suck. So buying the IP would be better, sadly I don’t see this happening :(

    1. Nobody is talking about buying Rare. Kirkhope was saying that he hopes that one day the EX-Rare staff teams up and goes to Nintendo so that they can make Banjo 3.

      1. If FPS is really all that, why is Microsoft holding to those cartoonish Rare IPs? Microsoft have those IPs to keep it from Nintendo.

          1. That’s because only Nintendo knows what to do with them. Those Same FPS games with different tittles is just going to be more graphics on a 720! Nintendo adds more graphics on new consoles but also changes how we play too. That’s why Xbox is holding on to old Rare’s dead IPs.

  33. Rare suffered quite a downfall…but well the best developers they had left and formed Retro but it’s still painful to know Microsoft owns the right to Banjo Kazooie, and obviously aren’t doing anything with them, whereas Retro/Nintendo definitely could do something great out of them.
So really, when you think about it, it would be a good move to have Nintendo buy them back; it would be beneficial for both sides.

  34. I don think that this is gonna happen… but I would really appreciate it like kirkhope. He is great, and I would love to see not only a new banjo for wii u, but also new goldeneye, jet force gemini, diddy kong racing, donkey kong 64, starfox adventures and all the other great rare games i’ve forgotten to mention. rare isnt the same nowadays but he meant the former members of rare, that left rare when ms bought it.

with starfox adventures we saw what rare would have been able to do on “next gen” after n64…

  36. I couldn’t help but laugh my ass off when Grant Kirkhope voiced his dislike for the abomination that was Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Then when he went on to say that Banjo 3 should be developed for the Wii U… oh man… that made my day. Knowing that members… ehm… ex-members of RARE want something like that. Goes to show you that RARE actually DID enjoy working with Nintendo and that this bullshit that Microsoft has been getting away with, involving RARE’s old IPs is completely inexcusable.

  38. Hope hey manage to put some old or new titles on Wii U. B.t.w, Chris Seavor’s talking about doing a directors play through of conker’s bad fur day, on twitter.

  39. I told you, Microsoft is the biggest thief ever. For stealing Rare out of Nintendo (Can’t stop repeat myself) So I think Nintendo would say “What is going here? Microsoft stealing our Rare? I’ll find Rare out of Microsoft!” and then Microsoft says “Okay, Okay. You can have Rare. I don’t want Rare anymore you can have him!” And Nintendo goes “Hooray!”
