Nintendo Delayed Wii U Titles To Ensure ‘Delicately Crafted’ Games

pikmin_3Nintendo has revealed that their games for the Wii U console were delayed, in part, as a decision to create ‘delicately crafted’ titles with precise finishing touches. In a question and answer session over the financial results briefing, Satoru Iwata claimed that the decision was made in response to the influx of low-cost titles and intended to give games developers much-needed time to work on a second and third coat of polish.

Iwata said: “We originally planned to release a few first-party titles for Wii U during the first half of this year, but no big titles are scheduled for release before Pikmin 3 in July because we decided to take time to add the final touches to ensure that consumers fully feel that they are valuable titles. The brand of a franchise would be completely degraded without customer satisfaction. This is why we delayed the release schedule of such games.”

Iwata continued to say that certain Wii U launch titles required more development resources than originally expected and therefore lengthened the delay: “In short, the development teams of Pikmin 3 and other future games were understaffed during that period.”

He added: “We do not simply have one easily identifiable bottleneck in software development. These days it is becoming increasingly challenging to determine the minimum development resources required for customer satisfaction. […]  A delicately crafted game will never fail to appeal to consumers.”

        1. yes, it´s a good example. But even so they managed to produce a good game.
I sincerely hope they como with a sequel, with a more compelling, detailed story in a different setting. Paris or Tokyo would be awesome !

          1. Or they could go with a Sequel based on the survival of somewhere in another British city. Blackpool would be interesting, or Hull, or even somewhere in Scotland.

    1. Didn’t Miyamato say something along those lines? Something like “A delayed bad game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad”

      1. What’s painful is that Randy Pitchford read Miyamoto’s wise words and went on to make Aliens colonial marines.

    2. I’d rather have them deliver when they say they’re going to. I don’t care how long it takes, just don’t put out a release date when you’re not sure if you’ll be able to hit it. Why is that so hard?

  1. I appreciate quality over quantity, especially when so many other publishers are pushing out a disc shaped piece of shit so frequently.

  2. We know why, Nintendo.
We just wish you planned a bit more ahead and had better launch, you needed something like Star Fox, or Fzero, or Metroid, or some new IP to get that initial install base up.
Honestly, the “lack of sales” isn’t surprising, because,
    A. It’s a Nintendo console, it’s not going to push MASSIVE numbers,
    B. New consoles are over the horizon, people are saving up for those
And C. Most important to remember, it’s a console launch, EVERY LAUNCH IS LIKE THIS! The only one that wasn’t was the Wii (unsurprisingly)

    1. Nintendo is expected to push massive numbers now after the Wii , DS … Everyone thinks you have to sell 100 million like the Wii to be deemed a success , it’s bullshit. You could sell 30 Mill like the N64 and make profit overall and provide us with memorable games like the N64 did with Ocarina , Mario 64 , MM , etc.

The Wiiu is incredible and its getting better and better. The bad thing is the Rayman legends Challenge app just shows (proves) that it would of been a killer app for the console. The touch screen gameplay (when playing for leaderboards and scores) is litteraly twice as good as the Normal gameplay.

And now RL won’t have the same impact as it’s being spread thin onto old consoles.

      1. And it’s going to have to compete against those first party titles coming down the pipeline. Really stupid decision on their part.

    2. A. What do you mean, it’s not going to push massive numbers? Since when is Nintendo not known for that?
      B. The Wii U’s been selling less even before any bit of next-gen console news were out.
      C. Not every launch has been like this.

Maybe a bit more thought before you post out of sheer emotion.

  3. Maybe the developers of call of duty should do this, then their games wouldn’t be so repetitive and terrible.

  4. I’d rather wait for a game to be be better than have another Dead Island Riptide piece of shit that has the same problems + a few more than the first game.

    1. I believe he was talking about when it first will be released. The first ever moment it will be on the market is in Japan on July 13th.

  5. It’s like crafting a Katana, when you think everything is done, you need to forge the blade even more for perfection.

  6. This is one of the many reasons I respect and love Nintendo so much. They would rather delay a game than release a broken piece of crap. I wish more would follow their lead. Leave luck to heaven.

  7. Three more months and it's finally over!

Well it’s true. I bet no one noticed a glitch that was in the recent japanese pikmin 3 footage when the swooping snitch bug grabbed a winged pikmin. When you look closely, you’ll notice that the snitch bug isn’t actually holding the pikmin and the pikmin is barely out of it’s reach while it still looks like it’s been grabed. while that’s a minor mistake, it’s details like that which ruins the emersion that good games can deliver. So i’m glad they are taking their time to make the game is perfect. I’ve been waiting years to play this so it better be.( It better not be like nuts n bolts or duke nukem forever)

  8. … No, I think instead of shooting arrows into the fog, they’re waiting for
the enemy to show itself. Mario, Zelda and Retro’s beast would do the most
good when the new consoles finally show themselves.

  9. How much time need pikmin 3 to be perfect? the damn game has been in developed way before the Wii was even released.

  10. They could have released hd collection of such games as metroid trilogy, mario cart, f-zero, etc. Something like 1 a month or something that way gamers could have games to play while they wait for the new stuff. And there wouldn’t be such a long wait between games.

  11. I expect you’ll be backing up that statement by showing the first-party games that you’ve “delicately crafted” all this time during your next Direct.

    1. Posted before I was done. Thanks iPhone. Anyway:

Funny how there’s an abundance of delayed Wii U titles, more so than for other consoles. And they say it’s to “ensure quality”? Why is it Wii U games always require more and more time in order to make them playable?

What’s more: why are they putting out release dates prematurely? Stop making release dates before you’re sure of when it will be done… simples. How often do you see a movie, for example, set a concrete release date and then reneg on it months later? Hardly ever. Because they don’t put out a release date before they know when it’ll be done!

Come on, Nintendo. Get your (and the companies making games for your console) shit together! Wii U has a really weak lineup as it is, and there are ony a few really big-name, AAA titles slated for this year; you cannot afford to keep tripping over your own feet! This is how you’re going to “win over hardcore gamers”? With a weak launch lineup, continued weak launch year afterward with only a few exceptions, continued poor third party support, constant need for system updates for a) features that should have been around at launch, and b) bugs/issues that should have been tested prior to release?

I mean, the fact that formatted USB flash drives cannot be removed without getting an error message and having to manually unplug (to restart) the Wii U, is absolutely ridiculous, for example. It’s 2013: even Windows 95 allows for hot-swapping USB flash drives. Come. The fuck. On.

  12. I’m not worried about Wii U. It is going to be like 3DS. If Nintendo is focused on maxed quality, then the Wii U will be a success. This could also have 3rd party developers want to work on Wii U. Rayman Legends is proof. I think RL will be a flop on both PS3 and 360.

  13. This is why Nintendo games sale you put a Nintendo game out there and it’s complete. Any other developer they put a 60% done gam out there and you get the other 40% through DLC qand microtransactions. If anything they should be praised for not wanting to gouge there fans.

  14. I’m starting to wonder if development on the Wii U in terms of 1st-party titles has gone a lot slower than they originally planned which is why they have had so many delays, why they refuse to give out release date information about games that were supposed to be on shelves already, and ultimately why they choose not to have a huge keynote address at E3 this year?

This is the second time Iwata has come out to talk about game delays with the excuse of wanting to preserve quality over quantity. However I find his stance hypocritical because if they truly valued quality over quantity as much as they claim then the Wii U wouldn’t even been on store shelves now because it has had a TON of issues since launch that have NEVER been a problem in the past with Nintendo consoles before. The Wii U itself feels like a rushed-system and the delays of games started even before the system released. Games that were supposed to be released at launch were now “launch-window” games and so forth.

When we look back at history I think it will say that the problem that fell the Wii U was that Nintendo launched the console one-year too early. If they had waited one more year, they could have perfected all the technical issues the Wii U is having now, possibly made it a little-bit more powerful, had a powerhouse launch line-up with all new 1st-party games and ZERO last-gen multiplats, a fully-functional Miiverse, Nintendo Network, and Virtual Console. The Wii U could have been a beast right out of the gate. The PS4 and 720/Infinite would not have stood a chance.

Now they have giving Microsoft and Sony the chance they needed to get back in the race that should have already been over with. It doesn’t matter if the Hare started running first. If he falls asleep eventually that Tortoise is going to pass him by. Nintendo better wake up quick because I’m starting to hear the pitter-patter of little turtle feet.
