Platinum Games Producer Responds To Wonderful 101 Game Length

wonderful 101There’s some controversy brewing around Wonderful 101, and it’s about quality over quantity, or so it would seem. Games designer Hideki Kamiya tweeted such a statement that it has provoked Platinum Games producer Atsushi Inaba to level the playing field by responding via Twitter with a statement of his own:

“So it looks like ‪@PG_Kamiya‬ has caused another bit of controversy. What he is saying is his basic approach to how he creates an action game.

“The idea is rooted in that you shouldn’t pad your game with content users won’t enjoy in order to control play time to the end of the game. It isn’t something he wants to do, or thinks you should do.

“BTW, if you didn’t know ‪@PG_Kamiya‬ is the kind of game director who will pack as much content into the game as he can until he is satisfied. If we were to give in to all of his desires, the game we’d ship would probably be some super-long action game that no one would beat.

“I’ve been teamed up with ‪@PG_Kamiya‬ as his producer for a long time now, and game length is something I’ve never once worried about. That means both the length of a single play-through and the replayability of the game. Never worried once. Never. Actually, my job really is to be the one who says ‘This is too %^&* long! Cut it!’

“Of course, even though ‪@pg_kamiya‬ didn’t intend for people to jump to their own conclusions, they did. In this case, that conclusion was ‘So TW101 is going to be short then?!’

“Let me make my own conclusion: TW101 will be so much fun you are going to wear out your Wii U GamePad. You will have plenty of fun playing it for the first time, and just as much fun playing it over and over again. Actually, the Wii U GamePad is pretty sturdy, so you probably won’t wear it out… And I’m sorry I can’t explain to you in exact terms why I think you will have so much fun with TW101.

“I promise there will be plenty of news about the game in the days and weeks to come. But I will say this – Everyone here is working incredibly hard to make sure you say two things about TW101. One: I’m happy I bought a Wii U! — Two: I’m happy I bought The Wonderful 101!”

– Thanks, Eric

  1. this game will sell a lot more if its 40$, it would suck if this and other platinum games dont sell good on nintendo. this is a good developer that actually can create new and fresh games, that still are good. they could even make a kick ass star fox game, if retro doesnt make it with there next project.

    1. Aren’t you judging it a bit harshly? Granted, some low quality (…) games should release at a discount. But unless you’ve played W101 and think its garbage, I don’t know about saying ‘this brand-new game isn’t worth paying full price for.’ To me, that’s putting it on COD’s level…

    2. Woah woah. Wait for the game to be reviewed and till we know more about it before you deem it’s only worth $40…

Look at the picture at the top of the page , LOOK AT IT! the game looks awesome imo.

      1. im not saying its going to be a bad game,i just feel like people will think 40$ is more of a suited price on it due to what you get for your money. like wario ware imo is only worth 10-20$, any mire i would feel ripped off

        1. But that’s the thing; we don’t yet KNOW what we’re getting for our money, with this game.
For all you or anyone else here knows, it’s worth just as much as any other big-name title as far as its gameplay and replay quality goes.
Saying it’s only worth $40 before having even tried it just makes you sound like you’re bashing it.[which, as you said, isn’t your intent]

          1. im just saying i think it will sell if it is a little cheaper, i think it will be a good game and im not saying that price because its not worth the buy. its all about marketing and if nintendo fucking advertises it. if it has a 40$ price tag to i think that people who dont know about video games, aka the parents, will see it and see the price tag and will buy it for there kids. who knows like pikmin 3 or this game ive never herd of. im not trash talking the game i just dont want it to be looked upon from 1st party like always and it would suck if this game bombs in sales. thats the last thing nintendo needs. like bayonetta 2 is different its hard core, people know about it, it wouldnt be risky to charge 60$

            1. Sky Grounder [@ Wii U]

ANY game would sell better if they ran at a lower price. But the developers need to make a fortune out of it, so they have to set the right price for the game, which probably would be between 50$-60$.

  2. i got to play this game at a Wii U event in Los Angeles a few months ago. It was only a short playable demo level, but it was an absolutely blast and I can’t wait to pick it up and play the full game.

  3. I have no doubt that this game will be amazing. Hideki Kamiya has made some of my favorite games ever (Including Okami, my #1 favorite game ever). I have no doubt that this game will have lots to do, and what there is to do, it will be amazing.

        1. Halo 4 is a multiplayer based game with features such as Forge mode to be fair… The campaign was short as heck though.

              1. sorry nintedward but i my opinion the history of halo fucking ROCKS, don’t be blind by the fact that is based on MP. and that people just buy it for that, it is a wonderful universe that you should look on,

    1. Unless it’s like the Monster Hunter Demo, then best to just not have a Demo.

In all honesty, I doubt anyone is capable of creating a demo as horrible as the MH3U one, so yeah, I’d love a 101 Demo myself!

      1. Lol! I don’t think that Demo will ever be forgotten xD. for being so terrible….

Of course the full game is 10 times better than that makes it seem to be :)

  4. Can’t wait for E3 for release dates,am hoping this comes out in june or july it looks great.Am having blast on the u wii u with lego undercover and rayman challenges,I have monster hunter there as well.Once the likes of w101,pikmin 3 and zelda ww will never be of my wii u.
