While Nintendo fans consider the Wii U a next-generation console, skeptics deem it as a current-generation console that won’t be able to compete with upcoming platforms PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – both of which are scheduled to launch later this year. However, according to a developer that has worked on games for Nintendo platforms, including Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo’s latest console is most definitely a next-generation console.
In an interview with GameReactor, Shin’en Multimedia Art Director Martin Sauter defended the Wii U hardware. Sauter said that while the Wii U isn’t a big leap in terms of raw power, if developers work hard enough, they can produce beautifully-crafted games on it.
Of course the Wii U is not the big leap hardware power-wise but it is a big leap to the Wii and to be honest I think we’ve reached a point where we don’t need so much more hardware power – we need better games. For every game you can make it look so good that it’s good enough for everybody and I think the Wii U is a good compromise between price point – because don’t forget you have a tablet controller, you have a great hardware base and it’s much better than everybody reads. It’s better than Xbox – sorry, it is better – and you can squeeze lots out of it, but you have to really work hard on it and I think you can make great games with it.
I’m not sure if a much more powerful PS4 will produce much better looking games. We’ve reached a point where good games will sell and I think the steps will be much much smaller in the next generation.

No. PS4 and Wii U games both run at 1080p. Only Xbox One games run at 4K. But you won’t really be able to tell since not many people have 4K TVs so they will only see 1080p.

you’d need at the very least (!) a dual GPU system to get anywhere near reliable framerates trying to render 8 million pixels.. for more demanding titles 2 GPUs wouldn’t be nearly enough

Still not sure what they were thinking. People want a GAMING console that might be able to do other things. Not an overpriced TV box that can sorta game on the side.

but you won’t find one that supports more than 24 fps.. since that’s the limit of hdmi 1.4 at 4K resolution.. so actually playing a game at that resolution isn’t even possible.. unless you want to play with 24 fps that is

Actually thats wrong what they all have in common were that they were the weakest of their entire generation yet they were able too outsell the competition and still had many amazing games. PS1 went against the N64 PS2 went against the Gamecube and the Xbox SNES went against the Master System and Genesis and Sega CD. Wii went up against PC 360 and PS3. So history shows its not always been about the power of the console but what you can do with said console too create amazing gameplay expieriences. But no these days no one really cares about good games anymore they just wanna compare specs and be graphic whores. who cares if the PS4 and XONE are more powerful. Cause WESTERN developers are too lazy to innovate within their games. If they wanted to innovate, instead of making boring first person shooters, then they would love to develop on Wii U.
Not to mention most “next-gen” engine scale. CryEngine 3, Anvil, Hedgehog, Unreal Engine 4, ect all scale, so it doesn’t take as much time or money as you’re “implying”

Give it time, they will. Once the devs realize that they aren’t making money on these games anymore because they are spending too much on development for cutting edge graphics, then it will be even playing ground. Also they will pretty much go to which ever console sells the most. So this generation it will likely be the Wii U and the PS4. I certainly wouldn’t go anywhere near an X one. The stupid thing is that I actually prefer the 360 over the PS3 for this gen. I hardly even compare the Wii to the other two because it’s a different beast entirely. Similar thing to the Wii U to, once again, the other two… Soon to be one lol.

And hardware these days are getting redesigned to be smaller such as flat screen televisions, Cell phones, cars, portable devices, yet XBOx does the complete opposite. The Wii U is more powerful than NES, SNES and N64 and yet the Gamecube, Wii and Wii U are smaller. Also it seems that Microsoft’s IPs are only FPS. So all that’s left is a doubled up 8 core console with 500 gig that it needs more than Wii U needs 8 or 32gigs. However i read that an individual Wii U core is more powerful than an individual PS4 core. Its sorta like taking a 2004 V6 Infinti, and a 2011 KIA OPTIMA I4 TURBO. People today want less pistons without sacarficing performance. XBOx heavy technology is dinosaur. The Xbox 360 hardware quality was like Ford back in the 90’s. People are on their 4th 360s. Why or how the hell people think the XBox One is going to kill the Wii U? Exclusives are what really matters it differs a console from another.
A lot of people agree with you. The XBox One causes more problems than it is worth. The need to log onto the internet every day (and if you are away or your internet goes down then you’re left with a brick), having to pay a fee to borrow games or buy second hand games (which is going to stop the majority of second-hand games retailers stocking games for the system) and the fact that the console power / Kinect camera is always on feels like an intrusion. Not to mention the voice recognition technology, which puts you at risk of the channels switching over if you speak during gameplay or watching television programmes…
I have no problem with the XBox 360, but the XBox One is without doubt an exercise in money-grabbing, and even a lot of XBox fanboys have turned on Microsoft over it. Both Nintendo and Sony will benefit from Microsoft’s error, as we have already seen on Amazon UK. Now we just have to wait for the PS4 details to come, and then we should be able to make an educted guess as to how the ‘next gen’ years will play out.

We really are seeing diminishing returns. A lot of what is made possible with greater power is better lighting effects, bloom, draw distance etc. We’re seeing new display methods like oculus rift, new methods of input like the Wii U tablet, the Kinect and feedback on triggers with the X1. Game are changing in ways that simple graphical fidelity doesn’t measure. Sooner or later, like all true art forms, the experience will be the most important metric we use to measure the quality of the offering.

I actually loved ZombiU and thought it a much more involving experience than Dead Island, for instance. And it DOES look better too, with less glitches…
I really don’t think ZombiU looks all that bad either, especially since it was one of the first offerings for the Wii U on brand new hardware and all that. But the gameplay is great. And the grittyness seems to help with the atmosphere I think.

Honestly, im not “wow’ed” by visuals anymore, on a “high texture” scale. If someone does a crazy visual style and it looks beautiful then yeah i would be, but just saying “oh here’s some polygon, look at the detail”, i dont care, it’s irrelevant to me.

A lot of games with pretty visuals have boring gameplay. I bought AC3 because of the graphics, that game did not suck but it was causing me to yawn. But it has great graphics.

I am just playing resident evil rev and to be honest the graphics don’t really stand out, in fact I would say re4 on GameCube are more impressive, but the game is good, other games I have played such as call of duty need for speed assassins creed ninja gaiden and tekken there is no way a Wii could produce them.
I’m with a lot of people on this, I don’t think there is enough games yet to really comment, plus there isn’t really any in house releases apart from Mario and that Nintendo land.

Ignoring that Pikmin3 will be more different than Halo 4. Álso ignoring that Twilight Princess was a complete gaming experience compared to Majoria’s Mask with the Wii Remote. Also ignoring that Raymond Legends for Wii U is a different experience than the traditional PS3/360 controllers. Also ignoring that on Nintendo Land on Donkey Kong game, if you blow into the mic the game reacts to it. But because Nintendo came out with this first and not Sony, you want to play stupid on thinking the Wii U is just a 50x more powerful NES.

It’s funny that you say that because out of all the games that get released main Mario Games like Mario Galaxy innovate more than 99% of the game ames on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Where was the innovation at Sony’s press conference? Knack, KillzoneShooterfall? Tech Demos.
Hands down the Next Mario game will innovate more than any game Sony or MS releases. You need to actually start looking at what the games due instead of looking at the name and calling something a rehash.

It does. Paper mario is a large case for innovation, between the 2d and 3d switchable play style and variences of gameplay. Same again with sticker star to a point. Very different use of items in that game. There are certainly time they sit back and chill and do the same ole’ like with nsmbu, but you can’t expect mind blowing new gameplay styles for every entry.
Those are just the biggest IP including pokemon. Nintendo has several newer exlusives pikmin and Xenoblade for example + Nintendo has stated they don’t make an Ip then think of gameplay for it. They experiment with new ideas then decide if it would work better with one of there esixting Ip’s or if a new Ip would better suit it. That why if you notice most mario and zelda games have some sort of new element to them.
Example: Mario- Water pump mechanics in sunshine, Gravity physics in galaxy 1 and 2, 3d dimensional platforming puzzles in 3d land, dual button RPG combat in Mario and Luigi
Example Zelda- Vast world of islands and boat traversal in Wind Waker, One to One sword motion Combat which was first tested in WSR then chosen for Skyward Sword, Altering dimensions from 2d to 3d to solve puzzles in LTTP2.
I’m 100% sure that in the next Mario and Zelda it won’t be just upsacled graphics and new levels/dungeons but all new gameplay mechanics added to an already solid foundation.

The graphical difference compared to the other consoles will be very little to none. Most people won’t even notice.
Actually we will see the differences in graphics but it won’t matter. PS4 games will have more details in the graphics, making them look more realistic than Wii U games but that doesn’t mean that Wii U’s graphics will be ugly compared to PS4.
Wii U games can still look amazing compared to PS4 games if developers work hard.

The ONLY reason I still have my Wii and N64 is to play Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie and Tooie and, Pikmin 2, Star Fox adventures since those games are not bet on e-shop. I do agree with the concept. Just because a console might not have the specs that the others have, it is still a next gen console. The games are ultimately what counts. The graphics are good enough, so it’s the quality of the actual gameplay that I’m looking for. Personally I think Wii U is more next generation than XBone is. What does the XBox do that Wii U is not already doing? Also don’t forget too Nintendo will introduce an all new Wii U above the deluxe. It is not a redesigned but an extra trim. Take the 2011 Kia Optima. When it first arrived it had available the LX and EX. months later Kia introduced the SX. In other words, a Wii U SX will be unveiled at E3.
I must say, the Wii U looks a lot more interesting since the release of the Xbox One. I think ill wait for the PS4 release before making my decision. I have an Xbox 360 and feel I missed out on a lot of top games by not going for the PS3. Do you agree?

Can someone tell me why Xbone is next generation? Where is the innovation at for gamers? Those TV features are the same damn think Roku TV and Apple TV can do for less plus Ford’s Sync systen for making the voice as the remote. Like a four dour sedan, XBox one will not allow no more then 5 people in the living room. So again how is the XBox One next generation when none of those features or the controller are something that was already done. Lastly: Wii U has a lot of games right? Right now the base has 8gigs and the deluxe has 32gigs and Xboxone has 500 gigs right? Now let’s say that Wii U forced people to download their games on the console. Those 32gigs would be used up. Zelda is a big as game. The base Wii U could not handle that. In other words, Xboxone will go through 32 gigs a lot faster than Wii U will. If xboxone was a car, it would be a.gas guzuler.
Also since Xbox one is more powerful with 8 cores I wonder how long.those 500gigs will last since players are.forced to download. My guess is 5 years. Alsoets.say you delete a game on your Xbox for more room and somewhere down the road you want to download it.again, will the XBone realize it being a new game or used game?

It doesn’t need 8 cores now. Developers are just now starting to max out the hardware in the PS3 and 360 and IT could still be pushed further. There are only two reason I can think of for the gaudy specs of the PS4 and XBone.
1. Sony and Microsoft are trying to out do each other.
2. Sony and Microsoft made a machine powerful enough and structured in such a way that they won’t have to release another console again for over a decade if ever again.
The first option is stupid, second option makes since from a financial stand point. They will take huge losses in the beginning, but in the long run will save money. However, this strategy only works if the public jumps all over the system and buys it like crazy.
Pay no attention to those people that think you need absurdly gaudy hardware to produce impressive graphics. They have no idea what they are talking about. Generations are about succession in a product line. Not about a certain undetermined power-levels SOLELY made up in the minds of people whom care about nothing else. The XBOX ruined the PS2 in terms of power level. They were both 6th gen, XBOX lost, PS2 won. The N64 DESTROYED the PS1 in power level. They were both 5th gen, the N64 lost, PS1 was the victor. The XBOX 360 and PS3 annihilated the Wii in terms of power. They were all 7th gen and the Wii annihilated them in terms of sales of games and console making it the 5th best selling console of all time.
There is no way of knowing how this 8th gen will turn out. There is no way to predict how the consumer will respond once all three console are available in force (meaning Nintendo has all their heavyweight games on the shelf to buy.)
Price will be a great determining factor. If the Wii U can show off graphics that look as good as what the PS4 and XBone can do for far less money, it is gonna be tough to over come that and I think one of the reasons why the western gaming market and press are so biased towards Nintendo and are constantly attacking the Wii U’s power level is because they know that Nintendo is capable of doing just THAT.
Looking at Wii games such as Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Smash Bros Brawl, DKCR, Kirby Epic Yarn, and even Gamecube games such as StarFox Assault, Smash Bros Melee, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, and Luigi’s Mansion simply upscaled to 1080p RESOLUTION should be VERY afraid of seeing Wii U games built from the ground up in native 1080p HD graphics.

The XBOne is a next-generation console, because generations are not determined by the specs or features of said consoles.
Generations are determined by release sequence. Therefore, the Wii U, PS4, and XBOne are all next-generation consoles.
Tech and features have never, and will never, define what generation a console falls under.
However, whether or not a “next generation” is good or bad, is dependent upon the personal opinion of the viewer.
I personally feel the X-Box One is the worst possible form that microsoft could have chosen for their newest generation of the X-Box brand.

They made some good points in the article. I’ll put in a few of my own points and observations, for anybody who cares to read them.
Yes, the PS4/One are more powerful than Wii U. No, it’s not the same difference as we saw between PS3/360 and Wii. Other than EA’s garbage claim that Wii U can’t run Frostbite 2/3, (Cry Engine 3 is far more capable than either of them, and runs “beautifully” on Wii U according to Crytek) the Wii U can run all the upcoming graphics engines that will be standard on PS4/One, like Cry Engine 3/Unreal 4/Unity 4 and other comparable engines. It may not run them in the same capacity or with all the extra effects, but at least it can run them, which makes the gap much smaller. Unreal 3 and comparable engines were the mainstays of PS3/360 titles, and the Wii couldn’t run them at all, hence why the Wii looked terrible compared to PS3/360 games. Even so, titles like Mario Galaxy 1/2 or Sonic Colors look stunning, and at a glance, could be mistaken as a PS3/360 title.
The gameplay elements that are possible with the Wii U are definitely game changers. Sure, it can appear to be gimmicky, or silly, depending on how it’s used. Some of the mini games on Nintendoland won’t impress people very much, but some games, like Zombi U have fantastic elements to them, that are only possible with the Wii U gamepad. Zombi U is a great example of what they are talking about here, as a true “next gen” game. It’s visuals aren’t anything extra special compared to what’s out there, but the extra tension it allows to be created when looking through your backpack, or the blips on the radar that keep you on your toes, and even the ability to use it to scan your environment (which was also seen in Resident Evil Revelations) are all elements that simply wouldn’t work or feel the same if you tried to do them on the PS4/One, at least not without owning a Vita/compatible tablet.
Games sell consoles, not graphics. Not every console that won it’s generation had the best graphics. Gamecube and Xbox were superior to PS2, but games sold the PS2 beyond those consoles. Exclusive games moved Wii consoles faster than PS3/360 (price helped too, and may help the Wii U as well) The Wii U is lacking in games at the moment, and some of the 3rd parties aren’t being helpful, but the games are coming. The upcoming NIntendo direct has the potential to really get excitement back up. Bayonetta 2 / X / Smash Bros / Zelda / Retro Studio’s Project / Mario Kart / 3D Mario all can be potential system sellers.
It’s interesting how similar the situation between the Wii U and PS4 are to the 3DS/Vita situation. The Vita had better specs, more abilities, a decent price compared to the 3DS’ initial pricing, and it’s lineup of games seemed much better than what the 3DS offered. The 3DS was “dead in the water” and was going to be destroyed by the Vita. Then suddenly, the games started to pour out of the flood gates for the 3DS. Turned out that the gap in graphics weren’t quite as big as initially thought. (Resident Evil Revelations is darn near as impressive as Uncharted Golden Abyss) The price cut on 3DS certainly helped, but the fact you had to buy an expensive memory card to play games on the Vita played nearly as big a factor. Vita’s game library dried up. Some of these factors could end up repeating with the Wii U and PS4. The price may end up being significantly different, with or without Wii U price cuts. Games could start flowing for the Wii U, the type of games that will move consoles, and sell in the 10+ millions. (3D Mario/Mario Kart/Smash Bros etc.) Games like Zelda, Retro Studio’s game, and “X” could showcase that the Wii U’s graphics aren’t that far off from the PS4. While the PS4 library may not dry up like Vita’s, the potential for using the same system for used games as the Xbox One and non backwards compatibility, could be a factor like the expensive memory cards.
Time will show whether or not the Wii U can sell well in comparison to PS4/One. If I was a betting man, I’d put my money on the Wii U surprising most people, and selling nearly as many, if not more than PS4 or One. If these coming titles move Wii U consoles, and even angry EA start porting their games to Wii U, I have no doubt it will succeed. If not, we may see a new Nintendo console in another 2 years that has more power than PS4 or One. They have the money and the means to do it.
My samsung es8000 led hdtv + nintendo wii u = xboxone with my tv i can voice command , hand gestures+ more ect. My ” U” has tvii, games + more Lol, xoboxone looks like a big ass set top box/dvr for sure
Or if people who are into set top boxes simply buy a Roku for $50. It does what XBone does but for far less money. It even has standard HD.

And what do you mean? Everybody knows that XBOX 1 will be stronger, but Nintendo has more popular games. And even if it has only 3 cores, it´s still superior to the current gen. A real gamer wouldn´t judge a console by the number of corses, but instead by the quality of the games,which is not only definied by the graphics.
