The final names of the next Super Smash Bros. games for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U have been revealed. Although both games were shown off to the public earlier this week for the first time, Nintendo hasn’t shared their official names until today. Super Smash Bros. series director has confirmed to IGN that the Nintendo 3DS version of the game is simply called Super Smash Bros. 3DS and the Wii U version’s official title is Super Smash Bros. Wii U.

Update: As listed on the Super Smash Bros. website, the new Super Smash Bros. games are actually called “Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS” and “Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.”

            1. No. I’m talking about the people that are more retarded than us, for them, is the same name, and by consequence they can only buy the 3D version, because the name looks more attractive to them, so… yeah… my point is clear, the name looks fair enough, if you don’t like it, that’s not my problem.

          1. I get the feeling SSBU and SSB3D are what fans are going to call it anyway. I have no complaints with the plain, no-nonsense titles, but they aren’t catchy like “Brawl” or “Melee” in the past. As silly as “Universe” would be, it’d at least be a subtitle we could refer to it by. Oh well.

  1. Well, that’s such a simple name. Anyways anybody wanna trade 3ds friend codes to play Animal crossing?

  2. It makes me sad too but I see way he did that. It’s so people won’t get confused with one another.

  3. It’s really simple, but this series doesn’t really need fancy names. They started doing this with Mario Kart too and it’s been fine.

  4. They’re good names but I would’ve preferred either Super Smash Bros. 4 for both of them or Maybe even Super Smash Bros. U and Super Smash Bros. 3D. Again, those are good names and I can’t wait for this game to come out! =)

  5. E3 is the most shit I’ve seen from nintendo. I can see why they did nintendo direct.

They would get a really big boooooooooooo

      1. I may of misjudged. Now that I think of it, it’s pretty straight forward and it will stop any confusion. Anyway in the end we know that this game will kick ass. As a Nintendo fan, can be annoying.

        Thanks :)

Are you kidding me? I was hoping so much this Mario crap wouldn’t carry on to other first-party games. In my eyes, this is tainting the reputation of Super Smash Bros.

  7. Man, talk about lazy naming. At least the Wii version wasn’t called “Super Smash Bros. Wii”. I always thought it was lazy titles whenever a game is named after the console. And there’s a LOT like that.

  8. Other news on Smash:

    1) There’s a slight chance both of them don’t go out at the same time. Issues with the 3DS with regards to how to accommodate characters that incorporate more than one fighter. Which leads to this:

    2) Ice Climbers are back.

  9. Super Smash Brothers Massacre would be my idea…

Oh well, it’s the game that counts in the end…

  10. I think they’re fine, it saves them running out of ‘fight’ based names, and saves them using over-ambitious titles like Universe. Where would they have gone after Universe?

And they’ve avoided numbering which would confuse people, Mario Kart pulled it off but Smash Bros may not have. So i’m happy with the names :3

  12. I don’t get it. The graphic has a 4 in it. Why even put that in there if it’s not going to be part of the name? This announcement was supposed to clear up the confusion but it’s only made me more confused.

    1. Well follow the tradition of previous games it would’ve been called Smash Bros Collide, the original had Melee written on the back and Melee has Brawl written on the back.

      1. That would have been alright. It’s like the Smash Brothers “collide”, in a non-homosexual way… :)

  14. Aww… I was hoping Super Smash Bros with U and Super Smash Bros 3rd Dimensional. After all Wii U is about family. :P

  15. well they cant use synonyms of fight for every smash bros, or they’d run out of options eventually. it still could have been more original, but…

  17. Taking the Rambo 4 route and just calling it Rambo (well…Smash Bros)

I dont care, i just want it :D

    1. I mean honestly, lets hypathetically say it was called Smash Bros Battle, here’s a typical conversation.

“Are you getting Smash Bros Battle?”
      “Which one’s that?”
      “The one for WiiU”

And that’s why it’s just called Smash Bros.

  18. The question is: Is there actually any need to give it a title that could confuse people.
Have it simple. Why should the name of the game affect the game and its sales?

  19. They could call it “Super Garbage Canopener 37” for all I care, it wold still sond and be better than the Xbox Done by Infinite times!

    1. I must be tired from the gym considering I’m writting like a garbage canopener…

I’m off for my daily energy restoring…

I’ll see you Nintendo Drones later to fight the remaining Xbots and compete against the Sonyans…

  20. I like the simple names. Super Smash Bros. Universe sounds stupid and I don’t want them to pick some random synonym to Brawl and Melee like “Fight, or “Duel” or some crap like that. 💋

  21. Eh, it’s just a name.

Though I would’ve liked a single letter that we can agree upon for abbreviation’s sake that wouldn’t be confusing. U or W is usable as SSBU or SSBW, but 3 would create confusion as SSB3.

But for abbreviation’s sake, I still think it’s easier to type SSB4 rather than SSB3DS and SSBWU.

    1. SSB3D and SSBU. That’s how they’ll end up abbreviated. U pretty much is already used for Wii U anyhow and 3D is what they tend to do with the 3DS. They are 2 different games after all. Stages will vary and who knows, maybe even some characters will be different between the two. They did say the rosters are the same size, but they never said anything about them being the same, so just the wording of that makes you wonder if maybe they have a few different characters. A few handheld only franchises on the 3DS and home console only on the Wii U wouldn’t surprise me, especially since they’re already doing that with the stages. And maybe they’ll be able to link the two games together to get the version specific stages and characters on the other version, since they did say they’d have some sort of cross compatibility function. This is all just speculation, but it makes sense and seems like a Nintendo sort of thing to do. It’d reward the players who have bother versions, like trading version exclusive pokemon to fill the pokedex. It’s almost like a form of DLC I feel like, but it’s a bonus reward instead of an additional cost

  22. It’ll avoid confusion.
Btw, I (wishfully) think Mega Man will unlock either Mega Man X or Zero. And If Dark Samus isn’t in this one, it’ll never happen :(
(Dark Samus, Spire and Rundas for Metroid characters)
I’m surprisingly more excited for X! They’re both coming out the same year, so 2014 can’t come quick enough!

    1. I wouldn’t put money on any third party franchise getting more than one rep. Metroid might get up to 3. But I have a feeling that they’re gonna focus less on multiple characters from single franchises and more on reaching out to new franchises. Get one Xenoblade character (Shulk), one professor Layton, one Animal Crossing (though Tom Nook saw the letter after Villager dropped it so he may come too), and so on and so forth. Non-major first party franchises shouldn’t expect more than 2 reps I think. I mean, just looking at Wii Fit Trainer gives the impression that they really wanna change things up and make them a bit crazier, so it makes some sense

  23. I was thinking those logos looked pretty legit for people to be saying they didn’t reveal the names. I mean, the 3 in 3DS and U in Wii U both had the flame effects going through them, so it seemed legit. I actually like it, people always just call Super Smash Bros, Smash Bros anyhow. It’s sorta like a relaunching of the franchise. I like it

  25. I’m surprised they used the word “for”. This will be the first game with a title like that I think. It would be much easier just to say Smash Bros 3ds and Super Smash Bros WiiU

  26. Definitely not the greatest name. I don’t like when it’s so short like that. I would have liked something epic like Super Smash Bros Arena or Super Smash Bros Duel. Aw well, the game’s still going to be one of all the time greats anyway

  27. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Fisticuffs, Free-For-All, Unleashed, Universe. Pretty much anything is better than that. I would’ve preferred a silly name like “Super Smash Bros.: Tussle” over this.

  28. thenintendoreviewer

Avoids confusion. But they do have time to change the name. Cuz that sounds very lazy. What about Super Smash Bros Rumble? Or Beat down?
