Third-Party Characters In Super Smash Bros. Won’t Be An Ongoing Trend

super smash brosWith the reveal of Mega Man as a playable character in the next Super Smash Bros. there’s been a burning question on every fans lips: will there be additional third-party characters in the next Super Smash Bros. title? In short, the answer is no, but it’s always nice to have some hope. Game designer Masahiro Sakurai has told Kotaku that the introduction of third-party characters in Smash titles will not be an ongoing trend. He said:

“But I think I can say generally that there won’t be a trend of adding a lot of third-party characters. You can sort of think of Mega Man as being the special case.”

Additionally, Sakurai mentioned that there were limitations on the 3DS but, though some characters may need a reduction in their abilities, the same batch of characters would be available on both Wii U and 3DS versions:

“The reality of the situation unfortunately is that there are certain limitations on the 3DS, so we’re forced into the situation where we may need to reduce some characters to a certain degree. But we’re really working hard in order to include as many characters as possible.”

Sounds very much that he wants to have the same number of characters in both versions but considering the 3DS’ limitations it looks as if he wants to compromise the Wii U version in that regard…

  1. Mega man was a huge part of Nintendo back in the day from the nes-Snes he deserves his spot on the roster this is why smash brothers is better than all-stars all stars had no where as many sony guys as smash brothers it had to many 3rd party guys

  2. So basically it’ll be similar to how Soul Calibur is?

I’m okay with that, changing the 3rd party characters is fine.

    1. Well we are still unsure right now. I hope that Sakurai keeps Sonic in and adds Pacman or Rayman or something. 💋

  3. I do do see at least one Namco person being on here … if they still owned the rights i would love to see Banjo kazooie … but the one thing i would love if they used Kid Link from MM and make him like the pokemon trainer with the different masks so he could be 3 diff characters and his final smash could be the Fierce deity

  4. I don’t care as long as there is some form of toon/young link he was the best character in brawl and that is science.

  6. all i’m expecting in terms of third party, is the return of sonic and snake, and one namco bandai character.

  7. having third parties isnt the normal intention anyways, but i think they should still have limited use of them in each game. it is very good fro developer relationships.

  8. Hope the Wii U won’t hold back and have as much characters and other features as possible because of the 3DS limitations. Honestly, having one game to not be able to accomplish everything it could just so that it can stay on par with a handheld game is stupid, I hope I misunderstood this information.

  9. I hope he meant that they didn’t intend on ADDING anymore third party characters to the roster, so there would just be the 3. Snake was my best character and it’d be a shame if he was left out of the fight.

  10. I’d like to see a total of 4 third party characters, just so it would be possible to do a match of only third party characters. So Mega Man, Sonic, and Snake, but who else? I’m not sure.

    1. Pacman, Bayonetta, Rayman, Tails(SEGA), <One of them. Personally, I would prefer Pacman or Bayonetta. But anyone would do! 💋

  11. But I really want to fight on Battlefield or Final Destination with Sonic, Mario, Megaman and Pacman!!! That is the ULTIMATE BATTLE! 💋

  12. that’s ok. we’ll just hack the game and implement those characters in anyway. like in brawl hahaha.

  13. Well, I agree that their shouldn’t be too many 3rd party characters, but as long as there are more Nintendo than 3rd Party, it should be okay. Take Melee, since there were 25 characters, I think 20 for Nintendo and 5 for 3rd Party is a good amount. For Brawl it could be 28 for Nintendo and 7 for 3rd Party. If the new Smash game has 50 characters, then give 40 for Nintendo and get 10 for the others. Still, Nintendo has enough characters to fill out the roster anyway

  14. But the third-party characters adds some much needed variety and spice to the otherwise same ol’ same ol’ series. As long as they keep characters like Snake OUT of it, it’s great!
