Smash Bros Wii U And 3DS Story Mode Won’t Be Like Brawl

Smash Bros series creator Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that the story mode for Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS won’t be like the one found in Brawl. The Wii incarnation of Smash Bros contained the Subspace Emissary which was a sprawling side-scroller mode with detailed cut-scenes. Sakurai says the single player mode for Super Smash Bros Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will be different from this, but wouldn’t reveal anymore details.

“There will be a single player [campaign], but it won’t be like the [Subspace Emissary] mode in Brawl.

One thing we can do with the Smash Bros. series that’s unique to us – because we have all these different disparate characters brought together – is we can create that sort of fan-movie experience as a special gift. But now those things are posted on the internet, it doesn’t really become a gift for people who played the game.”

“What we decided this time around, we’re just going to have [those movies unlocked] from the beginning. We’re going to have a movie for Wii Fit Trainer, The Villager and Mega Man and they’ll be viewable right at the beginning, you can watch those right away.”

    1. A 3D open world would be amazing but I think we would be expecting waaaaay to much from Nintendo. I am concerned that it’s going to be something forgettable. The single player mode in Brawl was very good. They should build on and improve on that instead.

      1. Hmm I don’t think 3D exploration would be forgettable since it would be a new thing to add it and many would be shocked (In a good way I hope. :P) Unless your talking about what they are planning.

But yeah, it probably isn’t that, maybe what they plan will be great too.

      2. They sorta did this with Kid Icarus: Uprising, didn’t they? So it wouldn’t be TOO much to expect from Nintendo to do something similar for the next Smash Bros.’ story mode.

  1. Good! I cant stand how boring the subspace emisary is. The cutscenes and unlockable charecters were the only things that kept me going

    1. I hope they have awesome cutscenes like those ones in “whatever” it is they are doing for the campain mode! 💋

  2. I dont really care about story mode, Subspace was stupid, i didnt fit the game at all.

The end of the MegaMan trailer where Yellow Devil turns up might be a good clue, like you fight on stages with unique enemies, then get a cutscene, kinda like more convential fighting game story modes

      1. Yeah. I mean id be happy with that.

I like to unlock the character but id like to get most of them fairly quickly rather than having to play thousands of matches first haha

          1. I know right. I don’t mind have 4-5 unlocked from doing classic mode or multiman brawl stuff but i want most of them quick enough

            1. You can always leave your Gamecube on when you go to school or work. Just turn off all the items and put it in stock. :P

  3. If I got it right (which I probably didn’t), he’s going to make the cutscenes available to watch right from the beginning, so you don’t have to play the tedious Story Mode to be able to watch the cutscenes.

  4. I have a feeling the story mode will be something like what we saw in the Megaman reveal trailer, much more action than SSE and epic cut scenes. I’m going to really enjoy this.

  5. I actually liked Subspace Emissary.

The way all of the characters fit into one story (though a bit poorly written; I mean, Tabuu just popped out of nowhere. If Miyamoto, Reggie, Iwata or Sakurai was the final boss, I would’ve been perfectly fine with that.) was amusing to watch and play out.

Also, it was a easy way of unlocking all of the characters.

While I did enjoy unlocking the movies, Sakurai is right in this case. I can watch them all on the Internet.

Even if Sakurai doesn’t include a Subspace Emissary-like single-player mode, there should still be something for the single-player experience that reflects that idea SSB is a fighting PLATFORMER. I think Subspace Emissary did that quite well.

  6. Damn. Was hoping for a less boring version of Subspace. Just bosses, character battles, and cutscenes. I loved watching the cutscenes for Subspace, Subspace itself wasn’t executed very well.

  7. I would really like it if they got rid of Super Smash origional Bosses like Duon and Galleom and put in classic Nintendo baddies. They should keep Ridley(Meta), Porky, King Dedede, Bowser, Rayquaza, and Petey, but should add Giga Bowser to the main story, Mewtwo, Metaknight, Dark Matter, Whispy Woods, King K. Rool, Dark Samus, Wolf, Andross, Ganondorf(Ganon),Girahim(Demise), Master Hand(Crazy Hand), Waluigi and Wario, Birdo, Samurai Goroh, Queen Bulborb, and if Sonic is still in the game add Dr. Eggman and maybe some metalgear bosses and Dr. Wily. and much much more! 💋

  8. I liked Subspace, but if the videos can maintain a blend of funny (Trainer) and kickass (Megaman) then it’s all the same to me. I just hope there is some platforming section, but not like Melee’s so-called “Adventure” mode. It was more than half made of regular fights, lightly sprinkled with vaguely interesting platforming stages, which themselves were punctuated with regular old fights!

  9. This sounds a bit sad. At worse it’ll be like Melee and not really an actual story mode. I don’t think this game is gonna take out Brawl now (Subspace was awesome!) but as long as the mini movies for each character are good..I’ll manage somehow

  10. Hey guys! U know how why u freakin mad guy is Always Freakin First? He follows this blog too and he’s the first guy to get the page. This time hr was too freakin slow. He’s a snail now.

  11. I can see that the next Super Smash Bros. is actually taking some inspiration from the Tekken series when it comes to cutscenes. It’s not surprising, since Namco Bandai is co-developing the game. Tekken has always been known for having unlockable movies for all of the fighters. It seems like they’re going in that direction with Smash Bros. too.

  12. My brain hurts. This quote doesn’t make any goddamn sense. Fan-made movies are on the internet, so characters will have cutscenes unlocked from the beginning, so the story mode will be different than Brawl’s? Dafuq?!

    1. He’s saying that watching Mario interact with Link isn’t as special any more since YouTube and Newgrounds are just full of crossover animations and people are no longer curious. He’s saying that people don’t particularly care any more about story mode, since the SSE got such a luke-warm reception. I for one really enjoy the cutscenes for the story mode – even watching the CGI moments from the trailers is wonderful! If they just made a big movie out of them, I would be content with that.

      1. That still doesn’t explain the quote in its entirety. This is what I make out of it:
“We made Subspace Emissary with the thought of people wanting to progress in order to see the unfolding of the storyline. But since all those cutscenes can be seen on the internet (YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, etc.), that ruined the point of Subspace Emissary. So for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS, we’re still gonna have a storyline, but it will be fully viewable from the start of the game. Each playable character in the game will have their own little movie.”

  13. Fuck this sucks, i liked subspace. Am i the only one that sees nintendo is just getting lazier and lazier?

  14. Melee’s Sidescroll fighter was actually favorable to me.. Especially the first level with mario? That personally reached out to me.

  15. For some reason I just don’t think the next Smash Bros. is going to be as good as Brawl. Don’t get me wrong though Brawl had it’s flaws like tripping, clunky characters, and the online could use some work. Brawl is still my favorite because it is packed with a TON of content and has the best roster of characters in my opinion. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS will cut the roster of characters and take out the diversity. I enjoyed the Subspace Emissary but wished it had some dialogue to it. Maybe I’m wrong though and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS will beat out Brawl but it just doesn’t have me as excited as the trailer revealing Pit, Wario, and Snake made me. At least the characters are faster. I really do hope they have a story mode with dialogue in the next SSB because that would totally rock. My philosophy is cut what’s bad, keep everything that was good, and add more great things to a game.

      1. I think this trailer was better though since it revealed a lot more about the new characters than Brawl’s trailer did. Yeah we knew more of them in the Brawl one, but all we really knew was that they existed. These new trailers actually gave us a pretty good idea of how these three characters will be like to play as.

  18. I spent the whole of Subspace Emissary just wishing it would end. Really really dull. Only did it because I understood it to be the quickest way to unlock all the characters.
