Previously Scrapped Ideas For Mario Kart 8 Led To Anti-Gravity Mechanic

mario kart 8Mario Kart 8 is due to unleash its new anti-gravity mechanic when it hits the Wii U next Spring, but how did the game designers get the idea in the first place? According to an interview on MTV Multiplayer with designers Hideki Konno and Mario Kart 7’s director Kosuke Yabuki, the idea was formulated after a previously scrapped Kart design involving an underground drill.

“In ‘7’ we had the glider, and submersion in water, and so when we were also thinking about new ideas for ‘8,’ and we thought, ‘well, since we did all that, why not put a drill on the karts, and have them go through the earth somehow, subterranean racing.’ But, we kind of thought that’s not such an interesting idea, and after that we hit upon the antigravity mechanic.” – Hideki Konno

  1. Anti Gravity isn’t interesting either. It adds nothing new to gameplay. All people want in MK is customizing levels and karts.

    1. I’ve heard from people who have played the game that it feels allot like a cross between Mario Kart and f-zero now so it does change gameplay

        1. The anti-gravity really messes with your perception of the track, adds several new ways to get through each stage, and overall just adds another element to think about when trying to snag 1st place from a friend. For example, in a cityscape track that was demoed, I was able to win partly due to deciding to ride on the walls instead of the street. I was able to ride on the wall, jump off, then glide right above the guy I was racing. Then I used a green shell to keep my lead as I headed to the finish line.

        2. It creates a new way of thinking about shortcuts and routes. Its like having a track where you can go in more directions. The ghost house was all over the place. Played through it twice and still didn’t get to go everywhere.

    2. Na I am really interested in the anti gravity thing. All people is not looking for cusstomizing. My kids are definitely NOT. So you sir is WRONG!!!

    3. There is going to be customization in the game, much like Mario Kart 7 had at least, it wasn’t in the e3 build cause it was a demo.

    4. The full game hasn’t been revealed I’m sure Karts will be customisable, I’m also hoping for NFC based drivers licence to transfer user data to other Wii U’s, alongside a customisable track creator.

    5. I like the anti-gravity idea!!! Levels will seem SOO much more interesting! I’ll have many more ways to go. A little Kart customization never hurts either though. There is no reason why we can’t have both in MK8 💋

      1. Good thing that “to look” only requires one sees what they are describing, IE: “Antigravity looks so much fun”

  2. translation, here at nintendo we wanted to make a gimmick….. how about carts flying upside town and around town!!!! WWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO, ( cracks open a beer and takes shirt off while spinning it like a retard in the air) WWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

    1. You are a pathetic little poser. You start to talk about Nintendo in a good way, and then completely do the opposite in another post. Make up your little mind if you actually like Nintendo or not. No one gives a shit if you don’t care about the “gimmicks” you say Nintendo is all about.

      1. its called not being a fanboy, there is plenty of reasons wrong what nintendo are doing and thats why you see so many people like ness, who actually likes nintendo.

        1. Hmmmmm let’s see here, look at the 3DS now, after the game drought it had. Also, the game pad has great potential and yet you shut down everything about it. Sure they haven’t used it to its potential yet, but bitching about it being a total gimmick instead of asking for something to be made of it isn’t helping.

    2. Whoa! You are hot sir! No I am not checking you out. I checking you out for my sister. Want to date my sister? :P

  3. they make something new for their game ————–> Nintendo makes gimmicks
they do the same thing in their game ——————-> Nintendo needs to make something new
    fuck logic we are trolls

      1. Agreed, it’s almost pathetic seeing these people bitch about everything that Nintendo does. This cool idea is being shut down by idiots who believe it is a gimmick. Bunch of morons in my opinion.

        1. its not really a gimmick, you really cant change much of mariokart and this is a way of something new added. im just joking up there, as you can tell. a gimmick would more like be how they forced motion controls on everything on wii and maybe the same thing with the gamepad this time.

          1. Are you too lazy to use the motion controls? Too stuck on sitting on your ass playing with a controller? Sure the motion controller has its bad times, but it’s better than the same old shit Microsoft is doing. While Nintendo changed their controllers throughout every system, guess who has the same old ones?

            1. no my exercise isnt video games. forcing motion controls in games that dont need it is bullshit like zelda. it was good for like red steel 2 the excite games and pandoras tower. not forcing it in everything, and if they do that to the gamepad how many other people will say fuck it. dont be stupid look at nintendo now and back 10 years ago. thats pretty much it.

    1. Perfect example of trolling gamers who just don’t want to admit that they don’t like Ninten but have no ideas on how to improve it yet want the games on other platforms

    1. I hope they MAKE an F-Zerol!!! It would sure as hell kick “Grand Turismo” and “Project Cars'” asses!!!! lolol!!! 💋

  4. The drill karts would have been a great addition, too! But dang, I can’t wait until Mario Kart 8 hits the shelves. They did such an amazing job with 7. I definitely rank it among my top 3 Mario Karts.

      1. If you have a 3DS, I definitely recommend trying 7 out. From what I’ve seen of 8 so far, it looks like it will live up to and even surpass 7 in terms of fun. And all in beautiful HD!

            1. That might be true, but as soon as Pikmin 3 comes out my money is well spent. After Pikmin 3 games shall be coming.
