Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key has explained that the company are still big supporters of the system, despite not announcing new core titles for the platform at E3. Key says that they really think that the second screen can bring a new dimension to video games. Key concluded by saying that Wii U is not necessarily next-generation, but it’s next-generation thinking. Here’s what he had to say.
“As a company, we like the Wii U. We really believe that the second screen can add a new dimension to gaming. We’re still big supporters of that system. We have just as many games coming out on Wii U this year as we did at launch. So we like the second screen. We think there are opportunities with all these games to extend them – to another person, to another location. We’re taking it very seriously.”
“It’s not necessarily next-generation, but it’s next-generation thinking. We want to extend the experience to whatever screen is handy. We have been looking for ways to take advantage of these second screens. Those companion apps are our first attempt at doing that.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when did pure horsepower dictate ‘next-generation’ gaming? Pretty sure the 8th gen experience will be determined more by social interaction and GPGPU offloading rather than just pure power. Wii U has both, therefore the quote is moot. PC-based architecture is hardly next-gen in that regard (especially if PC = Master Race).

But the 8th generation of gaming is gonna be all about social interaction and enhancing the way you play. We saw this with Miiverse, the Xbox One and all the extra features, and the sharing on PlayStation 4. This whole “Wii U is/isn’t next gen” argument to me is a waste of time and distracting everybody from what’s really important.

but then again, those two games are the only next gen 3rd party games i want to play… and the final fantasy 13 trilogy and 1ST party ps3 title the last of us, thats about it.

this could just be damage control because after the e3 comments that they will not be supporting wii u any more until more units of the console sell, and the install base gets bigger, which does make sense, its Nintendo’os job to push out compelling software and to advertise and get the system to sell and to make that initial install base enticing, then the third parties will come and add to the install base after nintendo has laid down the foundation.
But so far nintendo has failed to either advertise, or make compelling software to push units out the door, so as i said i don’t blame them, but i suspect the sudden change in comments is so that the news that came out of e3 wont negatively affect the sales of assassins creed black flag and watch dogs, and rayman, this is why maybe they are back tracking on what they said, its simple P.R people, but in any case time will tell, i have to commend them for being one of the few western third party companies who supported wii u off the bat!

At first i had my doubts and thought that Wii U will be in bad shape for the up to next year. But after seeing PS4 graphics, its not too far behind. I know that after a few years, PS4 an XBox1 will have better looking games…but so is the Wii U. Gameplay wise, Wii U wins hands down. I am now convinced that I made the right choice with my next gen console. Nintendo now is listening to its fans. They even reversed policy on LP’ers on youtube. When the time comes that the U gets 3rd party support, even Sony and MSoft supporters would not fail to notice.

doesnt anyone know what freakin NEXT-GEN means. A console being part of the next gen has NOTHING to do with power. The Wii U could be less powerful then the N64 and it would still be part of the same gen as PS4 and Xbox One. It all depends on the release sequence. The Wii U was released after the 7th gen consoles so it is clearly an 8th gen console.

With most of the games focused on local coop game-play, the WiiU suggests a pre-7th gen approach to gaming. Nintendo’s games are designed with ONLY family in mind and not the core they revealed to want to target. Ie; NintendoLand, Pikmin, 3D world, DK, Game & Wario All family/local multi-player games, an entire market, ignored.
Games are what Nintendo is all about, creating the best gameplay and with top quality, only this time it’s about HD graphics for them, which was the focus of last gen for the other console makers.
Imo, The WiiU/Nintendo has not yet reached the functionality of the 7th gen, making the value of the WiiU much lower then it has the potential to be. The only thing 8th gen is the amazing gamepad.

I’m saying 90% of gamers 18+ that want to play with their friends, want to play online, not locally.
I’m saying that even though the games Nintendo makes are of great quality they are not even considered by this market because of local coop only.(unless they are single player games)

Mario Kart Wii has sold over 30 million to date, and I bet atleast 95% of these play online…

If you and your friends are looking to buy a console to game together with, those are basically the only online multiplayer games Nintendo makes. Even though they are elite games, why would they choose the WiiU? Two Games is just not enough, also they are competitive games, where are the cooperative online games? They are required as well (see MH3).
I agree, a lot of gamers today do not see much value in the games that do not include online multiplayer(single player only games aside), Why? Because gaming locally is just not what people do anymore.
If these western empires had any sort of intelligence left, they would atleast state that the Wii U might not have “Next Gen Specs” but everything else is next gen and more advanced than the competition in the innovation scale…
But most people today always think that horse power alone defines every area of “Next Gen”…

Wii U is the only next-gen console. If consoles were judged on specs alone, they should all be considered crap because PC has them beat in that area many times over. Wii U is the only console that brings innovation to the table. Sony and Microsoft bring nothing but slightly better graphics than last generation’s consoles and they are still weak compared to PC’s capabilities.

The gamepad was a stupid idea honestly (waste of money too). They should of just stuck with the pro controller and beefed it up some more then maybe 3rd parties would finally support them again!

If you think about it, everything PS4 and Xbox One can do, your computer already does better, and it’s going to be that way for every new console Sony and Microsoft puts out. Yeah, I’m a Nintendo fan, but that doesn’t mean I’m blind to facts. Nintendo has never relied on solely on specs to market their hardware. Even if you don’t like the Wii U, you have to admit that Nintendo is trying new things with their consoles. The gamepad is a really interesting feature that you won’t find from any other brand, and it has some cool potential for future games. And as far as the Wii U games list goes. It’s not true at all that it has no games. In fact, it has many popular titles (exclusive and non-exclusive). That’s not even counting the blockbuster lineup Nintendo has for this coming fall through the holiday season and into 2014.
xbox one completely usless to pc. ps is less, you will find plenty of games not on pc. yeah i know your point. if all about power why not go to pc. meaning people will get PS4 for their exclusive just like nintendo in the end. still comes down to people wanting consoles in the end though. where that hurts nintendo lacking third party and stuff. if nintendo could be good at bringing all good games to the west. my problem with them would go down 50% because the games they dont bring over could really help out their library and most of them would be top games. which really pisses me off.

Indeed, if somebody really did want the most power for a gaming experience then the PC is the logical choice. High resolutions, high framerates, better graphics, faster loading times, bigger online worlds etc.
If only the more power did equate to smarter AI, artificial intelligence in video games barely seems to have evolved beyond the first 3D consoles, if the new hardware had a dedicated AI chip then we might see improvement but I fear that we will just see more eye candy, still stuck at 30fps. Oh well.
More power hasn’t led to Oculus Rift though, it’s been designed from the ground up as a new piece of hardware, and could also be called a gimmick by the same argument I guess. I really want one to go with my PC though, I have faith in the project with Carmack being involved.

I don’t see why the Wii U is that bad. I love the game pad, especially when they utilize it to its max. So what no games for awhile, once Pikmin 3 comes out(in which I’m excited for) we will start to get good games. Once this happens will you stop your bitching? Don’t say there aren’t ANY good games coming this year, because there is plenty. DKC TF looks pretty awesome.

I grew up playing on Nintendo consoles. (and actually have only owned Nintendo consoles all my life). But I don’t like Nintendo anymore. Nintendo used to make a lot of games for the ones of us who aren’t interested in all the Mario games.
I like the old Nintendo who had awesome 2nd party developers: Rare (makers of Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker, Jet Force Gemini, etc), Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness), Left Field (Excitebike64).. Nintendo made Wave Race (both on GC and N64) and 1080°. All those games have a more mature feel to them that appeals to me. I liked all those games. The special relationship they had with Factor 5 (Battle for Naboo on N64, Rogue Squadron games on the Gamecube). But Nintendo decided to sell all those awesome 2nd party developers years ago. Already with the Wii I started to feel it, there was a lack of games that appealed to me on the Wii. Now with the Wii U it is even worse. I bought a Wii U only because of Zombi U (and my loyalty to Nintendo which now they have lost), as none of those games Nintendo has released for the system appeal to me. Nothing Nintendo showed at E3 appeals to me. Now they only make “kiddie games” that don’t appeal to me. Nintendo is out of touch. Nintendo lost me as a customer. I liked the old Nintendo who used to make other types of games that appeal to me. Nintendo should have created new studios in the West years ago to replace all those studios that they decided to sell, and start making new IP’s. This should have been done years ago, before the launch of the Wii U.
Instead of complaining on a site that will only get you people to bitch at you, why not complain to Nintendo like others do. If they get enough people to bitch they will see the problem and try to fix it. I am also tired of CONSTANT mario games, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want another one for 4 years or something. The two games I’m wanting most is Star Fox and F-Zero.
